The side effects were brutal. Just finding the strength to cook a healthy meal for herself and her teenage daughter was out of the question.

One volunteer even delivered treats for the family dog.

“That blew my mind,” Ramos said. “The peace of mind it gave to my child to go to school and focus on learning and not worry about her mother at home was a blessing.”

Mama’s Kitchen, which celebrates its 25th anniversary this year, has called City Heights home since 2011. In a renovated industrial building off Home Avenue in Fairmount Park, volunteers gather daily to prepare and assemble grocery bags full of ready-to-eat food for clients who are not well enough to shop for or prepare their own meals.

“I really feel very emotional about Mama’s Kitchen, because they came to me at a point in life where I was really losing faith, and they helped me readjust that perspective,” Ramos said.

She is not alone. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Mama’s Kitchen volunteers deliver meals to anywhere between 300 and 350 clients throughout the county. Most clients live in the city of San Diego, but some live as far as Dulzura, Alpine, Ramona and Oceanside.

Mama’s Kitchen began in 1990 as a grassroots response to the rapidly worsening AIDS crisis. More than 1,000 San Diego County residents already had died of AIDS-related illnesses, and thousands more would die over the next five years. Volunteers working in the gay community realized that many people with AIDS were dying of malnutrition.

“A lot of them were single gay men who didn’t have a strong support system,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen who was working with the San Diego AIDS Project at the time. “Their vulnerability to hunger was really high.”

Laurie Leonard, whose brother was a victim of the epidemic, organized a group of volunteers to begin delivering homecooked meals to people who were suffering from AIDS. Leonard’s mother, Edie, inspired the Mama’s Kitchen name.

In 1995, doctors started prescribing a new antiretroviral treatment that dramatically improved the health and prognosis of people with HIV and AIDS. As a result, demand for the services of Mama’s Kitchen began to gradually decline. The organization’s board of directors in 2006 decided to expand the mission to serve clients affected by either AIDS or cancer.

About 80 percent of the meals delivered last year were to clients affected by AIDS; the other 20 percent were to those affected by cancer.

Cortés points out that the delivery of food is not just about helping sick people meet their nutritional needs.

“The delivery of food is also a message that somebody cares,” he said.

Mama’s Kitchen moved to City Heights when its lease on a Bankers Hill church basement expired after 17 years.

“We wore that building out,” said executive chef Anne Garger, who has led the kitchen since 1996.

The board of directors chose to move to City Heights because real estate was less expensive and they had easy access to Interstate 805 and state Routes 94 and 15. At 11,000 square feet, the Home Avenue building they purchased was double the size of the old basement, providing enough space for offices, a food pantry, conference and classroom space, a loading dock for deliveries, and a spacious and modern commercial kitchen.

From the same City Heights building, Mama’s Kitchen also operates Mama’s Pantry, which provides free groceries to more than 800 low-income people affected by HIV or AIDS in San Diego County every year.

Cooking for 300 to 350 people a day is no simple task, but Garger was well-prepared by her 20 years of service as a cook in the Navy.

“It actually was the perfect preparation for this job because I learned how to cook big, good, nutritious meals that taste good, ‘like mom used to make’ kind of food,” Garger said.

The menu, which rotates on a six-week cycle, is designed to meet 100 percent of clients’ unique nutritional needs. Because people with AIDS typically have trouble absorbing protein, for example, meals from Mama’s Kitchen include more high-protein items. Many clients are on medications that enhance their tastebuds, so Garger is careful not to add too much seasoning to meals. Some can’t eat dairy, some can’t eat pork, some are vegetarian and some can’t eat tomatoes. That adds some complexity to Garger’s job.

Mama’s Kitchen surveys its clients once a year for feedback on the menu.

Maker space coming to City Heights

Jobs and entrepreneurship opportunities may be headed to City Heights soon if a planned “maker space” moves forward as its backers hope.

Developers are in the process of buying longstanding O’Connor’s Church Goods at El Cajon Boulevard and 37th Street, with plans to convert the property into what developer David Iwashita calls “a catalytic project” that combines work, events, eating, and gathering space in single location. An adjacent auto dealership will be repurposed into the project as a restaurant.

The “maker movement” has been gaining momentum over the past decade in cities large and small as technology has made doit-yourself projects more popular. The work space envisioned by Iwashita and his business partner, Jay Wentz, will house graphic artists, architects, leather makers, bike repair specialists, attorneys, artists, photographers, woodworkers, and any other individual or small group that needs flexible work space.

A smaller-scale version of the project has

been operating in an East Village warehouse near Petco Park, branded the Moniker Warehouse. There, 27 small businesses operate in 18,000 square feet, most without walls between them. Each business pays for the square footage it uses, with the flexibility to add more space as it grows.

Working shoulder to shoulder with other businesses may seem like a distraction to some, but it’s a draw for many. Tenants have found they can share business ideas, generate new opportunities, and lower their operating costs.

“It’s cool they were thoughtful with the tenants they brought in that can feed off each other,” said Rob Nelson, owner of a two-person architecture business, who works at the East Village site.

Nelson said tenants are always bouncing ideas off each other, and his firm uses a wood-fabrication business downstairs for interior design projects.

INYOURWORDS Returning to his roots

City Heights offered Jama Mohammed and his family a chance at a new life in the United States. Now Mohammed is returning the favor in his adopted neighborhood as the new organizer for Mid-City CAN’s Access to Healthcare Momentum Team.

Mohammed and his family had to flee Somalia because of a tribal feud. A round from a rocket launcher blasted through their home as they packed up their car en route to Kenya. Their journey included a seven-year stay in a refugee camp while waiting to be accepted into the United States. While waiting to immigrate here, his family faced many dangers, including fleeing vengeful Kenyans and his mother’s kidnapping and escape.

“The day that she finally escaped and met up with us at the refugee camp, she was smiling. I remember her smile most of all,” Mohammed said.

Mohammed moved to San Diego when he was 9 years old. The transition to a new language and culture was difficult, but it taught Mohammed to take nothing for granted.

“Coming from that background with those experiences reminds me that no matter how much I struggle I can succeed and do something with my life. Those experiences drove me to be where I’m at today.”

Mohammed, a San Diego State University graduate, first started working at Mid-City CAN years ago as an interpreter, working on Access to Healthcare, Improving Transportation, and Food Justice momentum teams. The Access to Healthcare Momentum Team’s mission statement describes a commitment to fighting for “accessible services delivered in an environment that reflects the culturally and linguistically diverse needs of the community.”

The Mid-City Community Action Network works with residents and community

partners to effect change in the community. In 2009, Mid-City CAN entered into a 10-year partnership with The California Endowment in the Building Healthy Communities Initiative with the goal of improving community health in City Heights.

“I spent my young days providing for others. Having that passion to serve. I think that’s what led me to work here to have to the opportunity to give back to my community,” said Mohammed, who volunteers to teach children Aramaic at the Masjid Al-Huda Community Center.

Mohammed said it all comes down to passion.

“Having that passion to serve. Azalea Park artist wins county fair award Judges crowned an Azalea Park grandmother as the runner-up in the jewelry-making division at this year’s San Diego County Fair.

Rocio Bergum, a mother of four and grandmother of five, got her start in jewelry making after working on a class project with one of her granddaughters about five years ago. Coming from an artistic background as an art teacher in Mexico, Bergum said

she never much enjoyed sculpting with wood, stone or metals, but after helping her granddaughter create a clay sculpture she was hooked.

She started taking lessons in the method of “lost-wax casting” at the Spanish Village Arts Center in Balboa Park, and soon she was teaching the art. Bergum created her award-winning piece utilizing tools at both her converted home garage and at the arts center.

Bergum first sculptured the piece in wax, created the mold using plaster, then used a blowtorch to melt fine silver into the mold. The silver symbolizes the Balboa Park arches and corridors, and the 19-carat prehnite stone centerpiece symbolizes the park’s lush landscape.

Bergum soon will be turning her hobby into a business, selling her handmade jewelry and small sculptures online.

BLVD Market eyeing City Heights

First they reclaimed an old strip mall on El Cajon Boulevard in North Park. Then young business owners expanded to Utah Street.

Now organizers have their sights set on City Heights.

Since October, the BLVD Market has brought food vendors, music and residents to a strip mall parking lot on El Cajon Boulevard. The night market grew so popular it expanded onto adjacent Utah Street. Once nondescript, the commercial center — like much of the boulevard — has experienced a rebirth. An artisan butcher shop, juice bar and mattress store that doubles as an art gallery moved in.

“More and more people are

coming out and bringing their neighbors just from blocks away,” said Beryl Forman, marketing director for the El Cajon Boulevard Business Improvement Association, which puts on the event. “We felt summertime was a great time to actually expand into the street.”

Forman said the city has approved permits to close Utah Street between El Cajon Boulevard and Howard Street every third Friday of the month through December.

The Friday market features everything from Maine lobster to Mexican-style hot dogs to Neapolitan pizza.

Javier Ortega of City Heights has been selling empanadas – inspired by his childhood in Queens – at The BLVD Market since it began. Ortega said the market acted

as an incubator for his business, Spanglish Eats, and now he is looking for a restaurant of his own.

“That is because of small market venues like the El Cajon Boulevard market, which is just wonderful for the small business owner because we don’t necessarily have all the opportunities or all the capital,” Ortega said.

He is looking for a space nearby, where other entrepreneurs have helped change the corridor’s reputation from dingy and crime-ridden to fresh and up-and-coming.

The boulevard’s business association plans to start a similar market down the road in City Heights in the coming year, Forman said.

The Little Saigon district there has wanted a night market to showcase its Vietnamese-owned businesses.

The Plaza Comunitaria program, sponsored by the National Education Council for Life and Work, is an adult education program for Spanish speakers so they can help their children further develop their education. At the completion of each educational level, the adult students receive a certificate of completion issued by Mexico’s secretary of

public education. Locally, the Plaza Comunitaria Progreso A-Z program is a collaboration between Monroe Clark Middle School, the City Heights Educational Collaborative and the Mexican Consulate in San Diego. It was launched in May 2007, and this past year alone 25 adults graduated from four different levels: Literacy, Elementary School, Middle School, and GED Preparation. They were helped by a coordinator, four educational adviser volunteers, and two parent volunteers who assisted with child care.

“We are a very small arts organization,” Jennings said. “We just don’t have the money.”

Monroe Clark and Rosa Parks schools would be losing more than a parade.

Students spend weeks before the event learning about and making masks from different cultures while working with the Guild of Puppetry to create flags, banners and puppets to showcase in the procession. On the day of the parade, middle-schoolers congregate on the Monroe Clark athletic field as drummers keep a steady beat. At 8:15 a.m. July 7, some 450 middle school students marched through a campus gate and walked a few blocks north to Rosa Parks, where hundreds of children waited in an-

After parading before the entire Rosa Parks school population, the procession, now close to 600 students strong, marched together back to Monroe Clark, marking the passage to middle school in a larger-than-life celebration as residents lined up along the sidewalks to cheer on the children.

Funding for the original “Giant Puppet Parade” in 2006 came from an Arts and Culture Community Impact Grant from The San Diego Foundation, with additional funding from the National Endowment for the Arts, the California Arts Council’s Artists in Schools grants and the San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture.

The entire effort, Jennings said, builds a stronger community.

“It engenders the realization that working together, people can effect powerful and positive change,” Jennings said. “It invites participants and spectators of all ages, cultures, and backgrounds to join hands in celebration.”

Said Pham: “The parade highlights the vibrancy of the neighborhood. Plus, it’s great to see the smiles on all the children’s faces, and the joy that this event brings.”

Despite financial challenges facing the parade organizers, the vice principal said he was hopeful the event could continue. Jennings said she would like to see the effort expand.

“We would love to extend this kind of activity to communities all over San Diego,” Jennings said.

A new sick leave law aimed at benefiting low-income workers is receiving mixed reactions in City Heights.

“These laws are good steps for workers’ rights, but in the long run they are more harm than good,” said one fast-food employee, who wished to remain anonymous for fear of retribution from his company.

July marked the first month that an estimated 6.5 million workers in California became eligible for up

to three days of paid sick leave from their jobs. On July 1, the Healthy Workplace Healthy Family Act went into effect, mandating one hour of paid sick leave for every 30 hours worked. The new law allows both part-time and full-time employees to begin using the accrued time after 90 days of employment.

An employer may limit an employee’s use of paid sick leave to three days per year.

On the morning of June 30, dozens of people gathered in front of the McDonald’s on Fairmount Av-

enue in City Heights to celebrate the law, carrying signs that read “3 Sick Days”. Assemblywoman Lorena Gonzalez, who introduced the bill and fought for its passage, was the featured speaker.

“As a single, working mom, I know first-hand the challenge of having to juggle a sick child who needs to see a doctor and your responsibilities at work,” Gonzalez said. “But no parent should have to experience the heartache of having to choose between making the

Coming soon: Bus stops on the freeway

Construction has begun on the region’s first freeway-level bus stops – twin transit stations on state Route 15 in the heart of City Heights that are expected to significantly cut the time it takes commuters to reach downtown, UC San Diego and inland North County.

“The future of public transit in San Diego has never looked brighter,” said Harry Mathis, chairman of the San Diego Metropolitan Transit System’s board of directors.

Mathis, City Councilwoman Marti Emerald and San Diego Association of Governments vice chair and county Supervisor Ron Roberts were among the speakers at a July 8 event in City Heights marking the beginning of a two-year construction project that will conclude with the opening of the new MidCity Centerline Transit Stations on the freeway below University Avenue and El Cajon Boulevard.

Planners say the Centerline stations will help improve transfers between existing express and local transit routes. Riders will be able to use the freeway stations to board Rapid 235, an express freeway line from downtown to Escondido that connects with other Rapid lines, including Rapid 215 to San Diego State University and Rapid 237 to UC

San Diego.

Rapid 235 buses currently enter and exit the freeway to stop at the street-level transit stations at El Cajon Boulevard and University Avenue.

Both Centerline stations will be separated from traffic by a concrete barrier and sound walls. Station platforms will include bus shelters, benches, lighting, stairs and elevators.

The bus-only freeway lane will stretch about two miles, from just north of Interstate 805 to just south of Interstate 8.

The $65 million effort is funded through contributions from the Federal Transit Administration and TransNet, the regional halfcent sales tax for transportation improvements. Granite Construction is the primary contractor.

Officials at the July 8 ceremony at the Mid-City transit station on El Cajon Boulevard said improved public transit for MidCity residents was long overdue.

“We made a commitment to this community to build an innovative, integrated, multimodal transit system,” said Laurie Berman, the Caltrans director for the region.

Roberts said the Centerline stations “are a very unique solution that’s very forward thinking and will reduce traffic congestion on our freeways.”

The project stems from a promise made some 30 years ago when the 15 freeway

through Mid-City was in the planning stages. Stephen Russell, chair of the City Heights Community Development Corp.’s board of directors, noted the decades it took local residents to successfully lobby for the stations to be built.

Soccer lovers have a new arena at the Copley-Price Family YMCA in City Heights. The outdoor arena opened for play May 8 and already has become one of the busiest soccer fields in the county.

The soccer arena is a net-enclosed facility with indoor soccer dimensions. It is located at the northeast side of the 4300 block of El Cajon Boulevard.

During the early planning stages of the new Copley-Price Family YMCA, community members requested the inclusion of a standalone soccer arena. Early attendance

“Over 400 YMCA members use the soccer field on a weekly basis,” said Sulema Felix, Copley-Price Family YMCA Sports Director. “It is exciting to see so many people enjoying being active.”

Felix knows the joys of soccer.

The Hoover High School graduate went on to play soccer at UCLA, and is a well-respected leader in the local soccer community.

“San Diego is a soccer crazy city,” Felix said. “Our YMCA can help families stay fit — and crazy — together through soccer.”

“I really feel very emotional about Mama’s Kitchen, because they came to me at a point in life where I was really losing faith, and they helped me readjust that perspective,” Ramos said.

She is not alone. Every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, Mama’s Kitchen volunteers deliver meals to anywhere between 300 and 350 clients throughout the county. Most clients live in the city of San Diego, but some live as far as Dulzura, Alpine, Ramona and Oceanside.

Mama’s Kitchen began in 1990 as a grassroots response to the rapidly worsening AIDS crisis. More than 1,000 San Diego County residents already had died of AIDS-related illnesses, and thousands more would die over the next five years. Volunteers working in the gay community realized that many people with AIDS were dying of malnutrition.

“A lot of them were single gay men who didn’t have a strong support system,” said Alberto Cortés, executive director of Mama’s Kitchen who was working with the San Diego AIDS Project at the time. “Their vulnerability to hunger was really high.”

Laurie Leonard, whose brother was a victim of the epidemic, organized a group of volunteers to begin delivering home-cooked meals to people who were suffering from AIDS. Leonard’s mother, Edie, inspired the Mama’s Kitchen name.

In 1995, doctors started prescribing a new antiretroviral treatment that dramatically improved the health and prognosis of people with HIV and AIDS. As a result, demand for the ser-

Mama’s Kitchen moved to City Heights when its lease on a Bankers Hill church basement expired after 17 years.

“We wore that building out,” said executive chef Anne Garger, who has led the kitchen since 1996.

The board of directors chose to move to City Heights because real estate was less expensive and they had easy access to Interstate 805 and state Routes 94 and 15. At 11,000 square feet, the Home Avenue building they purchased was double the size of the old basement, providing enough space for offices, a food pantry, conference and classroom space, a loading dock for deliveries, and a spacious and modern commercial kitchen.

From the same City Heights building, Mama’s Kitchen also operates Mama’s Pantry, which provides free groceries to more than 800 low-income people affected by HIV or AIDS in San Diego County every year.

Cooking for 300 to 350 people a day is no simple task, but Garger was well-prepared by her 20 years of service as a cook in the Navy.

“It actually was the perfect preparation for this job because I learned how to cook big, good,

It may come as no surprise that San Diego is consistently ranked among the most expensive rental markets in the country. Depending on the survey and month taken, a two-bedroom apartment in San Diego can rent at a median price of about $1,400. That means a minimum-wage employee would have to work 119 hours per week – or three full-time jobs – just to pay rent and other basic living expenses, according to City Heights-based Affordable Housing Advocates.

“Our clients work and pay rent, but they might go without enough food and new clothing,” said Catherine Rodman, Afford-

able Housing Advocates’ managing attorney, who notes that most of her agency’s clients live in the Mid-City area and all have incomes within 125 percent of the federal poverty level.

“If a child breaks their arm or the transmission needs repair, the family won’t have enough rent money next month,” Rodman said. “They are always living on the edge of homelessness.”

Because of that vulnerability, combined with a lack of awareness of their rights, some residents in the area live in homes that don’t meet government standards. The most common code violations include homes plagued

by insects and rodents, water leaks, mold and electrical problems. These issues are the responsibility of landlords to correct.

In cases where landlords refuse to upgrade their properties, Kristine Guera, the staff attorney for Affordable Housing Advocates’ Tenants Rights Project, will represent eligible clients for free to compel landlords to bring their properties up to code. In some cases, withholding rent and the threat of a lawsuit by the tenant is enough to turn landlords into quality housing advocates.

In one instance, one of the worst offenders became a model landlord and outspoken advocate for

landlords to maintain their properties after he made improvements to his own property.

Many Affordable Housing Advocates clients are referred through the Legal Aid Society’s Unlawful Detainer Clinic, based at the downtown courthouse, but walk-ins are welcome at their City Heights Center offices at University and Fairmount avenues.

Individual clients make up the bulk of the office’s cases, but the real impact comes from suing redevelopment agencies and municipalities to make systemic changes to boost affordablehousing options.

In past years, lawsuits against the cities of Poway, Escondido and San Marcos have resulted in large numbers of new rental properties available to very low income and extremely low income renters. Affordable Housing Advocates recently filed a lawsuit on behalf of The Affordable Housing Coalition of San Diego County that includes dozens of state and local agencies involved in redevelopment project areas, including in City Heights. The lawsuit contends the agencies have not lived up to their obligations to provide the proper number of affordable-housing units. If the lawsuit is successful, City Heights could see an increase in the number of designated affordable homes.

“How can low-income families have any quality of life if every dime they make goes to housing?” Rodman said. “And their choices are limited if the only available housing is old and substandard.”

In a statement released by his office, Gov. Jerry Brown praised the law.

“Whether you’re a dishwasher in San Diego or a store clerk in Oakland, this bill frees you of having to choose between your family’s health and your job,” Brown said in the statement.

Some workers, though, are a bit anxious about the law’s impacts. One local Panda Express worker is afraid his employer will lay off his peers to make up for the cost difference of paid sick days.

“My boss said that if we ask for a lot, he’ll have to reduce the workforce,” he said. “They find a way around these laws. If I was single, I wouldn’t feel as much pressure to accept their conditions. But since I have a wife and kids, I have to do whatever it takes to keep my job.”

Lan Ly, a Vietnamese interpreter for Mid-City CAN’s Food Justice Momentum Team, said that the idea behind this legislation is noble, but workers are too afraid of losing their jobs to speak up when employers choose not to follow the implementation of such laws.

“One reason they get away with not following these new laws, making employees scared to ask for their rights, is because it’s so easy to be replaced,” Ly said. “If you want to get paid more they say, ‘OK, you can go. Here’s another person to replace you.’”

While big companies can afford to pay for sick time, many small businesses in City Heights may not be able to cover the costs, Ly said. A lot of mom-andpop businesses already are struggling to survive.

“When we pass a new law, we have to differentiate based on the size, the profit of the sales, not a one-size-fits all,” Ly said.

“It doesn’t fit all.”

Regardless, an estimated additional 279,000 San Diegans now have access to paid sick leave.

“Every single worker will start to realize what it’s like to be able to rely on that just little bit of safety net,” Gonzalez said. “I think we’ll be a better state because of it.”

La nueva ley permite que los trabajadores a tiempo parcial y completo usen el tiempo acumulado después de 90 días de haber comenzado a trabajar. El empleador puede limitar la cantidad de días por enfermedad pagados que usa el empleado a tres días al año.

En la mañana del 30 de junio, docenas de personas se reunieron frente al McDonald’s de la Avenida Fairmount en City Heights para celebrar la ley, llevando letreros que decían “3 Días por Enfermedad”. La Asambleísta Lorena González, quien introdujo la ley y luchó por su aprobación, fue la oradora principal.

“Como madre soltera, conozco por experiencia propia lo difícil que es hacer malabares si un hijo enfermo tiene que ir al médico y debes cumplir con las responsabilidades de tu trabajo”, dijo González. “Pero ningún padre de familia debería tener que experimentar el sufrimiento de tener que escoger entre pagar la renta y cuidar de su hijo.”

En un comunicado emitido por su oficina, el Gobernador Jerry Brown elogió la ley.

“Ya sea que laves platos en San Diego o trabajes en una tienda de Oakland, esta ley evita que tengas que escoger entre la salud de tu familia y tu empleo”, expresó Brown en el comunicado.

Pero algunos trabajadores están un poco preocupados por el impacto de la ley.

Un empleado local de Panda Express tiene miedo de que su empleador despida a sus compañeros para cubrir el costo de los días de enfermedad pagados.

“Mi jefe dijo que si exigimos demasiado va a tener que reducir la fuerza laboral”, dijo. “Ellos encuentran la forma de evitar cumplir con la ley. Si fuera soltero, no estaría bajo mucha presión para aceptar sus condiciones. Pero como tengo esposa e hijos, tengo que hacer lo que sea necesario para cuidar mi empleo”.

Reading means succeeding

When you think of children in the summertime, what comes to mind? Running through the sprinklers. Having fun at the playground.

For many educators, it’s the dreaded “summer slide” – the unfortunate reality that children forget much of what they learned in the past academic year. What’s more, research has shown that low-income children suffer much more than middle-class children. This achievement gap quickly adds up, leaving low-income youths less likely to graduate from high school or enter college.

That’s why United Way’s Book Drive and Day of Action are more important than ever. On June 20, parents and children joined community leaders and government officials, educators, law enforcement personnel, and volunteers and staff members at the Weingart Library in City Heights to celebrate reading and succeeding.

United Way volunteers set up a pop-up book shop filled with nearly 7,000 gently used books that were collected over the past few months for free distribution. Children chose their own titles, enabling them to continue reading this summer so that they return to school prepared for more learning.

Volunteers stationed around Officer Jeremy Henwood Memorial Park next to the library played spelling and reading games with children while helping them shop for books. Guest speakers included City Councilwoman Marti Emerald; San Diego Unified Superintendent Cindy Marten; and Youth Voice co-founder and CEO Dana Brown.

“This event is so important because during the summer, all the hard work we do during the school year, teaching our students to read, is challenged,” Marten said. “We want to make sure that after school and during the summer all kids have access to books – in their homes and in their apartments and in their rooms. We want a literacy-rich community, but it doesn’t happen unless books

are right next to their beds at home.”

Volunteers from San Diego’s business and nonprofit communities included representatives from GEICO, Thermo-Fisher Scientific, AT&T, Ledgent Finance & Accounting, San Diego International Airport, California American Water, Boyer Moving & Storage, and San Diego Park & Recreation, the County of San Diego, as well as the Women’s Leadership Council of the United Way of San Diego County, Emerging Leaders Council, and Promotoras. Weingart Head Librarian Joe Meisner also was a key member of the team, supporting United Way staff members from set-up to clean-up.

Each child received at least three gently used books and one new bilingual book, while parents took home tote bags filled with tip sheets to support their child’s reading. Leftover books were donated to the Weingart Library.

Por eso es que la Colecta de Libros y Día de Acción de United Way es más importante que nunca. El 20 de junio, padres y niños acompañaron a dirigentes comunitarios y funcionarios del gobierno, educadores, autoridades, voluntarios y al personal de la Biblioteca Weingart de City Heights para celebrar la lectura y el éxito.

libros usados pero en buen estado que fueron recolectados durante varios meses para ser distribuidos gratuitamente. Los niños escogieron sus propios libros, permitiéndoles seguir leyendo este verano para que puedan regresar a clases listos para seguir aprendiendo.
