SERVED understands what was happening in the youth offender’s life at the time of the incident, and stakeholders and facilitators provide meaningful discussion, oversight, resources and appropriate consequences for the minor. “Holding youth offenders accountable doesn’t always mean prosecuting them in Juvenile Court and putting them in Juvenile Hall,” District Attorney Bonnie Dumanis said. “We need more programs like this that provide second chances, opportunities for young offenders and alternative forms of justice. We appreciate and support the efforts of the Restorative Community Conference program, and the DA’s Office is a proud partner in this project.” In January 2014, a selection committee comprising City Heights residents, Mid-City CAN Peace Promotion Momentum Team members, and juvenile

Justice is It’s working. That’s the message from law enforcement officials and community groups regarding a pilot program in City Heights that offers youthful lawbreakers an alternative to Juvenile Hall. The City Heights Restorative Community Conference Pilot Project takes qualified youth offenders and puts them in faceto-face meetings with the people against whom they have committed crimes and community stakeholders. Together, the parties work out customized plans designed to repair the harm done to victims, families, and the community, as well as the offenders themselves. Plans may include community service for the offender, restitution, getting involved in afterschool activities, or taking drug or alcohol classes. At the end of the process, the offender learns how what he or she did personally harmed the victim, the victim

construction set Laboratorio Viviente By David Ogul City Heights Life
Construction is set to begin early next year on a state-of-the-art science center at the edge of Manzanita Canyon that will include ongoing educational programs to serve some 20,000 students in City Heights annually. The Ocean Discovery Institute announced it has wrapped up its $15 million fundraising drive to build the Living Lab, a facility that will include three laboratories, a scientist in residence, a community kitchen and a garden. Groundbreaking is being set for February. Since January, Ocean Discovery Institute has secured nearly $2.5 million in commitments through a collaboration among private funders. The string of recently secured
private donations all started with the Walter J. & Betty C. Zable Foundation’s $1 million challenge grant in spring. Walter Zable was the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Cubic Corp., which supplies military defense equipment and automated fare collection systems for public transit systems across the world. Today, San Diego-based Cubic Corp. is a more than $1 billion engineering giant with some 8,000 workers. The Zable Foundation donation was followed by pledges from the David C. Copley Foundation, which committed to a $750,000 grant – $250,000 of which was set up as a challenge grant; Price Philanthropies, which committed an additional $250,000 on top of its previously committed $200,000;
