I
care about the planet my kids are inheriting and try to do my bit. But the truth is I do the obvious: recycling, walking a little more often than hopping in the car. You know the drill. I also like my kids to be welldressed, but I don’t always want to break the bank to do it. I like the cheap thrill of a bargain, but I’m not so keen on the associated guilt that comes with throw-away fashion: appalling local working conditions, child labour, polluted local landscapes. I asked Professor Rebecca Earley (a total pro in sustainable and ethical fashion) if it was possible to devise a green shopping guide for parents. The result is a very useful resource outlining which brands are doing the most to save the planet while also taking care of their factory workers.

Interview
Jo Pratt, bestselling cookery writer, tells us about her new restaurant and admits even she feels the pressure of cooking for friends.
You opened The Gorgeous Kitchen in June, how has it gone? It was a struggle to get everything ready for the opening date and the staff didn’t have quite as long to be trained as we wanted, but it opened up and everyone is really happy. When it’s at capacity, there will be 60,000 people coming through the airport so I don’t think we’ll struggle for people coming in and out. We just want to make sure when they come in they get the best experience possible.
What’s on the menu? We are open and busy in the morning so some great breakfasts. One of my favourites is a quinoa porridge made with almond milk so it’s wheat-free and it’s great for travelling because it doesn’t make you feel really bloated. We have an express menu so you can be in and out within 15 minutes; afternoon tea and a glass of sparkling English fizz. And because people don’t often have deserts in an airport because they don’t have the time, we’re doing little mini pots of banoffee pie or elderflower jelly or chocolate mousse.
How did your career in food begin? I grew up in a house where my mum cooked a lot; she was always doing dinner parties and inviting people over. Both my grandmas
10 CITY KIDS
were big cooks, big bakers, so when my sister and I went over, we would always get involved in making something with them. I was lucky that my school cook really prided herself in getting the kids involved in knowing what they were cooking at school. She said I used to ask her for the recipes to take home. I did a Home Economics degree at Liverpool John Moores University and went on to do work experience at BBC Good Food magazine and met various chefs along the way. Gary Rhodes was huge at the time and I worked with him for 10 years on and off on TV programmes he was doing. He was a real perfectionist and I learnt so much from him.
Who in the culinary world do you admire? I guess Gary Rhodes for the opportunities really, and before that, Delia Smith. I grew up thinking, “I want to do what Delia does”. I remember cutting a hole out of a big box my mum had and pretending I was cooking on the telly when I was about seven. Well actually I don’t remember, but my mum reminds me!
So I presume your kids aren’t fussy eaters? I think they have rebelled against me. I’ve never pushed it but they don’t seem to be the most adventurous eaters at all. They were when they were little and then Olly got to two and started to be really, really fussy, and it was frustrating and upsetting to me. But they are getting a bit older now (7 & 5). They go through stages and it’s all about
Interview control on their part. I’ll go to the normal fail-safe meals if I just want them to eat something quickly otherwise a meal can go on for ages because they’re fiddling and faffing around. They are healthy kids, I know that they are obviously eating so I know it’s not worth stressing about, they’ll get there eventually.
Do you feel on show when you’re cooking for friends at home? I’m a real perfectionist and I want people to have the best experience they can. But, having a family, I don’t have the same amount of time I used to have before. Now it’s more a case of what can I make in the time that I have available. But I still want it to be good food. So I do feel that pressure. I don’t want them to go away thinking, “Is that all she can do! I thought she worked in the food industry!” But the more I get to know people, the more I relax into it a little bit and I enjoy it.
it’s still something I find fascinating.
What’s next? I’ve written another book which is based on healthy food, realistic, doable, healthy meals so we’ll be doing photos and getting that ready. Then the restaurant will get busier and I’m also working with companies on projects and products that they may have.
Alongside Jo Pratt (2nd from left), The Gorgeous Kitchen’s menus are devised by Gee Charman (3rd from left - former chef at Kensington Palace and right-hand woman of celebrity chefs including The Hairy Bikers, Simon Rimmer and Gordon Ramsay), Sophie Michell (4th from left - executive chef of Pont St. at Belgraves Hotel) and Caroline Mi Li Artiss (1st from left - one of the first chefs to be discovered on YouTube).
What about friends cooking for you? Yes they do admit that and I say, “Please don’t because I’m constantly cooking and I really, really like being cooked for”. So if I go to a friend’s house, whatever I’m given is so nice because it’s a social experience and I know that they’ve gone to effort. I’m not fussy, so I don’t want people to feel under pressure.
Is there anything you can’t cook? I’ll try anything and if it doesn’t work I’ll keep trying, I don’t like not being able to do it.
Is there anything you won’t cook? No, but there are probably things I won’t eat. I was working on the first Hell’s Kitchen that Gordon Ramsay did, and the celebrities did challenges like cooking and eating sheep’s brains. I had to try them out beforehand with the producer to check that it was actually physically doable. It was a texture thing and a psychological thing for me; I can’t remember the taste very well. I’m not too keen on offal, I won’t really order it, but occasionally I’ll have chicken livers off the menu.
Do you have a favourite West London eatery? We are really lucky in West London. I really like Charlotte’s Bistro, it is good quality and it does feel a little bit more special. The Duke of Sussex I really, really like, with kids or without. I’m a massive fan of tapas type food anyway so always enjoy going there. I also like to go into Central London to try new places so I don’t always eat out locally because I feel like I need to do a bit of research. I don’t go out for dinner all the time because baby-sitting is expensive and eating out is not cheap either. One of our favourite things to do is to go to Kew Gardens and either take a picnic and completely explore different parts of the gardens. Since we have membership we can go anytime and there always seems to be something different. If people come to visit, whatever age their kids are we know they’ll love it.
So if you weren’t in food what would you be doing? I nearly went into being a nurse actually. I didn’t do very well in my A-levels first time round so I had to retake them and while I was retaking I thought, maybe if I don’t do very well I should look at another option and I was really serious about going into nursing and

Ethical Fashion
Going Green: An Eco Clothing Guide (for Busy Parents)
by Professor Rebecca Earley
Why Go Green? We all love to look good, and we want our kids to be well dressed, but whilst the price of fashion can often be a bargain for our wallets the cost to the planet is far from cheap. However, research shows that even the greenest of green people find it tough to economically clothe themselves and their families in a totally ethical way. I’m not here to slap your wrists for occasionally buying baskets of fast fashion. Rather this is a guide to help us all shop a little greener, buy with a conscience and discover the high street or online good guys. I contacted some old friends and asked these eco activist mums how they clothed their kids and these are the ideas they shared.
Basic Green Fashion Principles The eco kids wear story is currently mostly about looking for 100% certified organic cotton and fair trade made, but there are a few other things to think about. GOOD QUALITY FABRICS AND STRONG STITCHING. So many ecomums say that when buying new it’s worth buying from brands like Boden, as they stand the test of time. Look for organic cotton, and the new cellulosics like tencel and lyocell. Try to buy monomaterial clothes – all made from the same fibre rather than a mix of fibre types (e.g. cotton with polyester), for easier recycling at end of life. COLOURS AND MATERIAL FINISHES - no patent leather shoes or fluorescent colours, which are very toxic! Darker colours mean more dyestuff has been used and that’s not good for the environment. Go for prints - they hide the dirt and stains and don’t have to be washed so often. MULTIFUNCTIONAL GARMENTS - trouser legs that zip off, garments that can be worn inside out. SEWING - look for good hem allowances on clothes so they can be altered, and items that come with spare buttons and repair patches.
Mini Rodini Stripe aop dress £40
Going Green On The High Street Many brands are now signing up to be greener producers of kids’ clothes - to varying degrees. Right now there are a few that are doing just that little bit more, so it might be worth rewarding them with your custom.
Cheap to Mid Range In Sweden H&M has long been considered a very good choice for babywear. They were amongst the first to use organic cotton and non-toxic dyes in their ranges, and have recently won awards for their ‘Conscious Commitments’. Look for the green labels in store that show items are part of the Conscious Collection range – I think their recycled polyester stuff is particularly good. In the UK it’s M&S that comes out top in my poll. Their Plan A work is considered world leading, and the company is dedicated to making a holistic swathe of improvements across their product ranges. (You might feel a bit bored by the design from time to time – but I have inside knowledge that a new designer there is shaking it up a bit, so keep an eye out for the new range!) Next is another ‘good guy’ - I visited one of their factories in China last year and was really impressed with the conditions and quality (and food - I had lunch in their workers canteen!). Finally, I am currently avoiding the brands that haven’t signed up to the Bangladesh Safety Accord like Gap (who have implemented their own system of standards). More than 170 brands have signed so there are plenty to choose from, including Debenhams, Fat Face and Mothercare.
CITY KIDS 13
Ethical Fashion Mid to High End Head to Zone 1. Peter Jones or John Lewis - I love their democratic staff policy, who doesn’t? - are increasingly investing in sustainable fashion, so I always head first for People Tree and Polarn O. Pyret. If you want something more upmarket, then Stella McCartney has been working for a long time on the fabrics for her kids line – the organic cotton jersey and wovens are gorgeous, and her packaging is all recycled and recyclable - it all counts! I would consider the most special upmarket clothes to be bespoke and made especially for you, and for this I recommend Sasti in Portobello. Rosie makes to order, and has the most edgy and fun designs. I really believe UK handmade, in second hand vintage fabrics, is worth saving up for, and may give you a richness of user experience you don’t get with the regular brands.
Green online shopping By far the biggest selection of green kids clothes can be found on the internet. The small labels are generally able to have greater control over their supply chains – working with smaller producers who offer better conditions to workers for instance. You may pay a bit more here, but consider it an investment. The more small green companies there are, the more the big companies will feel the competition and adopt better practices to try to attract the green pound. These small lines mostly focus on fabrics like organic cotton and fair labour conditions - not unlike the high street brands – but they also produce smaller runs of quirky, unusual designs, and you will be supporting entrepreneurs and small businesses as well. Our cover features clothes made by Swedish brand Mini Rodini, available in Selfridges and online, which holds sustainability, the environment and fair labour at the heart of its core values (minirodini. com). The Fablelists is an uber-cool brand, which is chemical and sweatshop labour free - they use 100% organic cotton and their factories are either Fair Wear or Fair Trade. They set up the label to ‘stop the cycle of kids making clothes for other kids’, as they put it (thefableists.com). Frugi clothes are really fun, well made, and designed to last a long time (welovefrugi.com). A Chelsea textile graduate set up Little Green Radicals and as you would expect the fabrics are gorgeous. They even sell real nappies, and are working with Ecotricity, a green energy provider (littlegreenradicals.co.uk). Eternal Creation has a great transparent ethical story – made in the Indian Himalayas - and beautiful clothes to boot, especially their animal print shirts (eternalcreation.com). For school uniform Eco Outfitters are trying really hard to offer a range of well-priced basics (ecooutfitters.co.uk). Ask your school if they have heard of them.

Before you shop, work those bags When you are planning a shopping trip take an hour to double-check what you already have. My ecomums all work a system of hand me downs – and the more organised they were about this, the better it was for the planet. So developing a five-bag system is the key first step:
Capturing moments in time that you will treasure forever
1 Best Friend Bag. In here put the nicest hand me downs. If you have a friend who gives you stuff, have a look at what they have given you recently. There is often a bigger anorak or pair of wellies lurking that I had forgotten about – and I end up being able to cross that item off the list.
2 Shwopping Bag. When you have given away the best stuff to a friend, save a bag for the shwopp! TK Maxx and Cancer Research UK have led the way, running their joint clothing collection campaign since 2004. Give Up Clothes for Good has raised £17.6 million, with £13.1 million funding ground-breaking research into childhood cancers. M&S has recently teamed up with Oxfam, aiming to reduce the volume of clothes thrown into landfill and its environmental impact while supporting Oxfam’s many campaigns.
3 School Fair Bag. Especially good for uniforms, and great for passing on toys and books.
4 Charity Bag. Avoid chucking any clothes in the bin - no matter how stained and tatty they are your local charity shop can benefit from your donation. Clothes that are not fit for wearing will be sold on to industry as ‘wiping rags’ or to be made into shoddy (a kind of industrial felt material). Bundle shoes together with an elastic band (essential tip!)
5 Mending/Making Bag. If you or your kids love craft, this bag can be used for projects (old tights for stuffed toys especially good), and mending other clothes with nice fabric patches.

Book review
I love children’s books and you love children’s books, so we’re going to get along just fine. As a children’s book blogger, I’m in a lucky position to be sent brand new shiny books to review and now I’m going to share those gems with you. With the autumn months on the horizon, now is a great time to refresh your shelves with some great new books.

PRE-SCHOOLERS
LITTLE KIDS
BIG KIDS
For pre-schoolers, Trudi Eseberger’s The Boy Who Lost His Bumble (Child’s Play) tells the tale of a young boy who loves bees. He loves them so much he even writes a diary about his favourite ones.
Violet and the Pearl of the Orient (Simon & Schuster) is the excellent debut novel by Harriet Whitehorn. The first in a series, don’t be fooled by the cutesy illustrations by the highly talent Becka Moor, this is a cracking read which follows feisty 10 year old Violet RemyRobinson who is on the trail of a jewel thief.
If you can tear your teenagers away their tablets and direct them towards an actual book, I strongly urge they check out the latest in the Itch series (Random House) by radio presenter Simon Mayo.
But as the seasons change and winter arrives, the bees disappear leaving the boy feeling lonely. He thinks up some ideas to entice them back, but nothing works. It’s not until spring returns and he sees the green shoots of plants growing, that his faith is restored, and he starts to feel better as the bees come back once more. A poignant tale which incorporates an environmental message, the changes in the season whilst taking on board the emotions of love, sadness and hope is no mean feat. Esberger’s jaunty illustrations really speak louder than the words, which are sparse. We all know that our little buzzy friends are in decline, which is why the back two pages are chock full of facts about why bees are important and what we can all do to help the cause. A lovely story, which is not only educational, but practical too. Make a beeline to your local book store and purchase a copy.
When a Count and Countess move into the house behind Violet, a precious stone goes missing from eccentric neighbour Dee Dee Derota. Could they have something to do with it? Along with her best friend Rose, our intrepid heroine turned super sleuth goes on the case to find out. Whitehorn, who currently works for English Heritage and has another career in building conservation, has written a pacy, exciting and humorous story filled with a stash of well crafted characters who have been brought to life by Moor’s stylish illustrations. Fans of the Alex T. Smith and Katie Davies will enjoy this book, and there’s more in store as the next in the series is out in February 2015.
Itchcraft is the third instalment of this action-packed series, with our hero 14 year old Itchingham Lofte who is a school boy by day but element hunter by night. Having discovered a new radioactive element he’s become the hottest property in town, but for all the wrong reasons, and now he has a constant battle to keep it from falling into the hands of those with less honourable intentions. Anybody who thinks science is boring should get their mitts on this sharpish, as it’s a non-stop rollercoaster ride, with even a person from the publishers saying it’s like ‘Breaking Bad for kids’ (without the illegal stuff obviously). Itch, with his sister Chloe and cousin Jack (Jacqueline) are once again in a bid to save the world. But Itch’s life is in danger and his enemy Flowerdew isn’t giving up easily. Shifting from Nigeria, to South Africa, to Cornwall - Mayo’s tautly written book is thrilling, tense, yet leaves you wanting more. A definite must-buy.

Sports Generation now delivers swimming lessons to over 800 children on a weekly basis with a team of 12 highly qualified and experienced swimming coaches. SG keep classes small so that children receive the maximum benefit of the lesson and more attention from the teacher. There are a maximum of four children in all non-swimmer and beginner classes.
Teaching children to swim has multiple benefits: •
It saves lives
•
Instills a fitness habit & boosts immune system
•
Develops motor and cognitive skills
•
Improves quality of sleep
•
Is fun & sociable
It is Christian and Christopher’s mission to get their clients’ children to become confident and happy swimmers with excellent technique as soon as possible. At Sports Generation classes are offered to children as young as 3 months.

CORNED BEEF AND SWEETCORN HASH WITH A DASH OF FLEXIBILITY This is great recipe that can be cooked up as a family meal or, once you have prepared everything, you can halve the mixture and cook one half for the kids to enjoy as a teatime treat and the other for a grownup meal a bit later on. It’s ideal for using up leftover potatoes, and it really doesn’t matter if they break up when you chop them. They will go even crunchier that way.
MAKES 2 adult or 4 kid-sized portions PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes COOKING TIME 20 minutes 2–3 tbsp olive oil 1 onion, finely sliced 400g/14oz cooked potatoes, cut into small chunks 340g/11¾oz tinned corned beef, crumbled into chunks 200g/7oz tinned sweetcorn, drained a shake of Worcestershire sauce a pinch of dried chilli flakes (optional) 2 handfuls of baby spinach leaves, roughly chopped (or use frozen) sea salt and freshly ground black pepper TO SERVE fried or poached eggs (optional) sweet chilli sauce, tomato ketchup or brown sauce 1.
Heat 1 tbsp of the oil in a frying pan, add the onion and fry over a low heat for about 5 minutes until it softens and starts to turn golden.
2. Transfer to a bowl and add the potatoes, corned beef, sweetcorn, Worcestershire sauce and chilli flakes, if using. Season lightly with salt and pepper. Mix to combine and either divide into individual portions or cook as one large hash. (The hash can be divided into portions before cooking and any that isn’t cooked straight away can be kept in the fridge for later.)
Taken from Madhouse Cookbook by Jo Pratt © 2013, Duncan Baird Publishers
3. Heat the remaining oil in the frying pan over a medium-high heat, add the hash and cook for about 5 minutes, stirring to heat everything through. Stir the spinach into the mixture and continue to fry for about 5 minutes, stirring just until everything is hot, then without stirring for about 5 minutes or so, until the corned beef and potatoes turn golden brown and crisp up at the edges. 4. Serve as it is or topped with a fried or poached egg, if you like, and a sauce of your choice.
