Peace of mind. The world can be a noisy place. That’s why children at St James practise ‘stillness’ and pause before and after every lesson. We see them calm down, refocus and head off to their next class buzzing with renewed energy. For parents, peace of mind comes from knowing your child will thrive academically and creatively in a warm, happy environment. Our pupils get great results. They just don’t get stressed about it. Please get in touch today to find out more about us or to arrange a visit.

AN ANTE-NATAL
BEVERLEY TURNER
ED U C AT I O N
N
ot doing ante-natal classes during pregnancy is like rocking up to a marathon in flip flops without having done any training. And yet, many women still choose the ‘la-la-la-I-can’thear-you’ approach to labour. It’s not surprising. We’re fed terrifying tales of childbirth from the moment we grasp that a baby comes out of our tinkle (vagina, nunny, foo-foo…insert own unsatisfactory terminology here). So, faced with the traumatising concept of pushing out a human, it’s no wonder so many women adopt a rictus grin, tell themselves they’ll be fine, they’ll take as many drugs as possible and as long as they’ve got a healthy baby, they’ll be happy. These are the women I lie awake at night worrying about. The gulf between confidence and blissful ignorance is immense. It’s a challenge you also face as a parent when your child is preparing for exams on a wave of self-belief after all the positive parenting that you’ve done. They breeze along convinced of their superiority and somehow you have to cajole them towards textbooks without undoing years of aggrandising by screaming, “You’re not that clever you know!” The amazing thing is that your body does know how to give birth. It really is that clever. But – unless you have more complicated medical conditions - there are two main barriers to a natural birth (if that is your Plan A): your busy brain and a busy maternity ward. I didn’t realise when I sat down to devise the content for The Happy Birth Club ante-natal course five years ago, quite how true this was.
“
And this is where good ante-natal education becomes your best ally. It’s nice to know about dilating cervixes and mucus plugs but great birth preparation is much more than that. Midwife Pam Wild and I watch couples go on extraordinary journeys over the couple of months during which we get to know them. They may arrive convinced that they’re aiming for a home birth but ultimately decide that in their own personal circumstance, a c-section is their best choice. Or perhaps they express a definitive need for an epidural at class one which slowly morphs into a keenness to use the birth centre by class six which results in a confidence-building birth that they could never have imagined without our course – and critically, their willingness to listen and learn. Me and my team may be ‘teaching them’ but like all good therapeutic processes, the couple will absorb information in an alchemistic way and decide what is right for them. Personally, I don’t even like the description, ante-natal “classes.” Such language around the maternity experience plays a critical role in infantilising women at a time when they should be feeling more adult than ever. Instead, we focus on discussion and questioning in an open
... women are slowly realising that pregnancy is the ideal time to go ‘back to school’ and equip themselves for life’s biggest event.
forum that encourages opinions, fosters greater understanding, autonomy and a huge amount of laughter. Having both parents-to-be in the room is paramount to a successful antenatal course outcome. How can your partner advocate for you when faced with significant decisions in labour if they don’t know what questions to ask and why? How can you talk through options such as induction, epidural or home birth if your partner has none of the facts at their disposal? Part of the twisted logic behind failing to attend ante-natal preparation groups is the idea that women mustn’t “get their hopes up” in case birth “goes wrong.” This is one of the best-intended yet patronising and defeatist sentiments ever dreamed up. It arose from the power shift that occurred when birth was moved out of the home and into hospitals with the creation of the NHS in the 1950s. Putting birth in the ‘hands of doctors’ on their turf, with their medical apparatus only worked if women were compliant (and grateful) for a one-sizefits-all system. The power dynamic shifted almost overnight and today far too many women report feeling like ‘passengers’ at their birth rather than the driving force behind what should be a momentously joyous event. Thankfully, with the increased popularity of hypnobirthing, pregnancy yoga and courses like ours, women are slowly realising that pregnancy is the ideal time to go ‘back to school’ and equip themselves for life’s biggest event. As with every occasion in life, knowledge is power – go and seize it!

FEATURE FOOD BY JO PRATT
SMOKED HADDOCK
MAC ‘N’ CHEESE
“T
his has to be one of the best comfort foods imaginable. Classic mac ’n’ cheese is hard to beat, but with the addition of rich, smoky haddock f laked through the sauce it’s off the scale! TIME TAKEN 1 hour SERVES 4 250g/9 oz dried macaroni pasta 350g/12 oz smoked haddock, skinned 1 onion, peeled and chopped 1 bay leaf 500ml/18 fl oz/2 cups milk 50g/1¾ oz butter 25g/1 oz plain flour 150g/5½ oz grated Emmental cheese 1 tsp English mustard 2 tbsp chopped chives freshly ground black pepper
• Preheat the oven to 200°C/400°F/gas 6. • Cook the macaroni in boiling salted water for 10 minutes, and drain. Toss in a little oil to prevent the pasta from sticking together. • Put the smoked haddock in a saucepan and add the onion, bay leaf, milk and a good twist of black pepper. Put over a medium heat, bring to a simmer and cook for 10 minutes. Remove from the heat, lift the haddock out of the milk, and break into chunky f lakes, retaining the milk. • In a separate large pan, melt the butter. When it’s bubbling, stir in the f lour. Stir for about 30 seconds, then pour in the oniony milk from cooking the smoked haddock. Using a balloon whisk, mix together until it comes to the boil and you have a loose sauce consistency. Stir in half of the cheese, and stir well until it’s melted. • Remove the pan from the heat and stir in the macaroni, mustard and chives. Fold through the smoked haddock and transfer to a large ovenproof dish. Scatter over the remaining cheese and bake in the oven for 20–25 minutes, until golden and bubbling.
FLEXIBLE This can easily be transformed into a classic mac ’n’ cheese, without using the smoked haddock. Sauté the onion and bay leaf in the butter until the onion is soft. Stir in the f lour then add the milk, bringing the sauce to the boil. Increase the quantity of cheese to 300g/10½ oz. I like to mix things up a bit with a selection of cheeses such as Emmental, smoked Cheddar and Monterey Jack.

Prevention is always key: • Ensure that any play objects are safe, unbreakable and are too big to fit inside the mouth. • If weaning, you may find that your baby occasionally gags. This gag reflex allows the food to move forward into the mouth and is normal. • Supervise your child when eating choking is often silent so you might not notice immediately. • Always cut up food. Remember foods like tomatoes, grapes and blackberries are small and slippery so should be cut into quarters. Make sure children are sitting down whilst eating and drinking. • If an object or food does get stuck in the throat and your child is coughing, it is called ‘partial blockage’. You will know if your child is choking if they are unable to cough, cry or breathe. In this case, you should: • With a baby, sit down and lay them face down along your thigh supporting their head. Give up to five sharp blows between their shoulder blades with the heel of your hand. For an older child simply deliver the blows between the shoulder blades. • Check the mouth for the object. If you can confidently pick it out with your fingertips then do so, but take great care not to push it in further. • If the back blows do not clear the blockage, give up to five chest thrusts. With your baby laid face up along the length of your thigh, put two fingers just below the centre of the chest and push inwards up to five times. Check their mouth regularly and remove the object if possible. • If choking persists, repeat back blows and chest thrusts until you dislodge the object and they can breathe. Call for help as soon as possible.
I have six top tips to help with this!
No birth, like anything is life, is risk free. We all take risks on a daily basis: for example, when our phone goes for a swim every time we have a quick scroll through Instagram in the bath! In terms of home birth, a huge nationwide study concluded that there was a small (but still very low overall) increase in risk of serious complications for healthy first-time mums; compared to giving birth in a labour ward. There was no increase in risk at all for healthy second-time mums. There are so many positives to a home birth. As well as having lower rates of interventions, many women feel more relaxed with access to home comforts like their bed (and their fridge!) - allowing the “love hormone” oxytocin to be produced, which is key for labour. You won’t need to worry about clean-up as your midwives will sort it before they leave (although only the birth-related stuff - The Marie Kondo declutter is up to you!). The most important thing to bear in mind is that your choice of birth setting is the right one for you and your pregnancy. Most hospitals offer homebirth services, and some have dedicated homebirth teams. Alternatively, you may prefer to look into independent midwives – having the same midwife, who has been taking care of you during pregnancy, at the birth is priceless! Beverley Turner – founder of the Happy Birth Club - had her first baby at a birth centre, then had two home births. She says “I knew my body could birth without complications so I believed that I should just give it a go at home. Of course, I would transfer into hospital should the need arise, and I knew that birth rarely ‘goes wrong’ quickly when you’re receiving no interventions. They were the best days of my life. I’d do it all again (if I didn’t have to raise the damn kids!)”

DO I KEEP MY CHILD’S TEETH HEALTHY? 1. Create a tooth brushing routine. A child who gets in the habit of brushing will carry that forward into adolescence and beyond. Children may initially resist, but most will eventually concede to the routine with consistent reinforcement. 2. Help kids aged eight years old and younger brush their teeth but supervise until age 11. The eight-year marker is approximate, but until children are able to tie their own shoes, they don’t have the skills to brush their own teeth. Even after children are able to brush their own teeth, parents should be supervising to ensure children are doing a good job. 3. Visit the dentist regularly. We will reinforce that oral health is a critical part of overall health, as well as check for early signs of tooth decay. We’ll also give parents strategies for taking care of their children’s teeth, and issues like dental trauma and snacking. 4. Brush with fluoride. Buy toothpaste with fluoride for children two years old and up. Follow the recommended amount on the packaging – and then don’t rinse! Have your children simply spit out the excess toothpaste. This will allow the fluoride to stay on their teeth, adding extra protection. 5. Limit sugar intake. The amount of sugar that is in kids’ drinks and diets directly relates to the rise in tooth decay. 6. Model good behaviour. One of the best things parents can do for their kids’ oral health is to take care of their own! Let children see how the whole family doesn’t go to bed until teeth are brushed.

MAKING AN ENTRANCE State, independent or a mix; 7+, 11+ or 13+ - which path do you choose? VICTORIA EVANS unravels the ever-evolving state of school entrance exams
I
t goes without saying that choosing the right school for your child takes a lot of thought. On the whole, most parents want their child to be happy and academically successful (though sadly there are some who put social climbing and school snobbery ahead of this). Open days and tours of schools can go some way to helping you make a decision, but the organised amongst you will also be looking at the bigger picture: the next stage of your child’s education. Here’s a rough guide to the decisions to make before your little one leaves nursery.
7+
Some schools (pre-preps) only take children until the end of year 2. After that, they need to leave and move onto a school via a 7+ entrance exam. This is also an entry point into the independent sector if you have started at a state primary. Pre-preps are often feeder schools to other prep schools. The academic challenge facing your child at this stage depends upon the school you have your sights set on. But, a good level of English, Maths, reasoning and social skills will be expected. The school is also likely to request a recent school report. Exams usually take place early in the Spring term for entrance
the following September, though it is sometimes possible to move in the Summer term if a place becomes available. In London, competition, even at this early stage in a child’s development is rife, with it not unheard of for tutors to be roped in from a child’s fourth birthday. We know of no school which would encourage this, and we politely ask parents to get a grip! What you can do, as a parent, is encourage reading, discuss different topics and generally encourage thinking.
11+ or 13+
Traditionally, 11+ has been the main route to independent London day schools which neatly coincides with the primary sector in England ending in year six. However, some of these independent schools also have an entry point at 13+ (Common Entrance), the age when boys, in particular, would leave their prep schools. 13 is also the age where a large proportion of children from prep school head off to boarding schools. We have put these two entrance options in the same category as the exam system in London is in a state of flux. The future of CE exams, where pupils sit exams across a range of subjects including religious studies, French, Latin, history and science as well as maths and English, is being questioned. Founder and Managing Director of Simply Learning Tuition, Nathaniel McCullagh, notes, “Increasingly parents are now moving their boys, as well as girls, at 11+ rather than waiting until the 13+ (the traditional time most boys would move to their senior schools). We understand this reason to be school led - partly in an attempt to modernise and to solve our social mobility issue (moves to public school at 13+ for state educated boys had been virtually impossible in the past).” For the uninitiated, CE was the traditional method of testing admissions to leading public schools, based on a curriculum written by the Independent Schools Examination Board. Generally taken in the summer of Year 8, it left those failing to make the grade desperately having to find a last-minute alternative school. St Paul’s and Westminster are scrapping CE as a method for entrance assessment with the Head of Westminster, Partrick CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 27
FEATURE Derham, stating it was “no longer fit for purpose”. To avoid last minute panics, schools generally conduct a pretest, allocating places according to ability in maths, English and reasoning. So instead of sitting pretty, thinking that your child has no need to worry about exams, pre-tests for entrance at 13 are now the norm. These take place in the Autumn or Spring term of Y6 and often include a computer-based section. But they don’t come without their issues. “To get young boys ready for pre-tests at age 10, parents and teachers now have an even bigger challenge. Schools in turn are having to make decisions based on cognitive testing at least two years ahead of any pupils joining them. Increasingly this seems to be favouring the earlier developers,” says Nathaniel McCullagh. A point not lost on those parents who specifically chose the 13+ route for their sons, taking into account what we know about the maturity of girls versus boys. Which leaves us with the dreaded 11+ entry for independent schools. Its plus points are that it is open to all and a natural entry point at the end of primary education. But most parents who have been through it would wish for a better system. In fact, the London 11+ Consortium, made up of 12 independent girls’ day schools have
replaced their 11+ entrance exams with a cognitive test which aims to be fairer to children from all backgrounds. Good news on the whole, but reports back from those who have been through the early days of the process suggest parents and schools are at a loss at how best to prepare the girls. For the remaining schools, the more traditional 11+ papers in maths, English, verbal and/or non-verbal reasoning prevail. Some schools interview all, others only invite children to interview who have made the grade. Some, have so-called ‘tutor-proof’ computer-based tests, while others interview in groups and seek out creative thinkers. But what the 11+ schools all have in common is an ever-growing demand for places. It’s not uncommon for there to be 12 candidates per place at some schools. This makes competition fierce, parenting stressful and tutoring the norm rather than the exception, not to mention the pressure faced by 10 and 11-year-old children. (We have written about this before: Navigating the 11+, September 2017). The London Consortium has taken steps tackle traditional testing, but the result is another admissions process for parents to navigate and prep for.

PARENTING
MOVE
TO LEARN
How activities focussed on movement improve learning.
I
t is that time of the year again when little ones put on their new uniforms, new shoes and a very brave face (or just tears and snot). The playground is filled with anxiously excited little cherubs and parents alike. As you turn to leave, excited for them but heart in your throat, you cannot help but wonder, will they like school? The first challenges faced by children in the classroom are learning how to write and sit quietly. These are difficult skills for many to master as they try to control their fingers to manipulate a pencil, listen and sit still when all they want to do is move! At the end of Reception year, some will be forming a few perfect letters whilst others will present you with a spider shape and say “Look, it’s an a, for apple mummy!” Some will be able to sit on the carpet without any trouble, but others will always be on the go, much to the dismay of most teachers. What makes one child sit still while another fidgets? For many of the children that I see, it often comes down to postural control. Put more simply, this is the control
we have over our body’s position for balance and orientation. If children do not have the coordination and strength to stabilise their bodies, they find it hugely demanding to sit for long periods. Even though postural control seems to be automatic and effortless as an OT I know that even sitting requires a certain amount of postural motor control. We also know that a demanding postural task interferes with a cognitive task (such as writing) and vice versa. In other words, if a child is already working hard to sit still at his desk, then he will find it harder to think about what he wants to write. The end result is a child who does not like writing or cannot sit still for the length of time the task requires. The answer is to find activities and classes beyond the school gates to make our children ‘posturally’ strong. So much of their time is spent in buggies, car seats and on iPads – what we call a ‘containerised’ society. It is, therefore, very important that we allow them the opportunities to engage in play that encourages push and pull through the body.
The first challenges faced by children in the classroom are learning how to write and sit quietly. Start your child’s days with jumps off the bed into a bean bag or scoot to school. In the afternoon, find the playground on the way home and allow your child to challenge themselves posturally i.e. by climbing and swinging. Hop whilst learning to count in twos or stick paper to a wall and write standing up. Consider which after school or weekend clubs you sign them up for. Do they offer movement? Is it making their bodies strong? Is it challenging their response to gravity? Kids always enjoy activities that are rich with resistive muscle activity (think push and pull) and rich with movement in all directions (think jumping up/down, cartwheeling). Activities like gymnastics offers these in so many ways. Firm, predictable, tactile pressure, intense jumps, balance challenges, bilateral coordination and sequencing and lots of rotation. Where else can you go upside down fifty times without being told off?! Moving to learn is a double winner. Recent neurological evidence confirms that ‘sensory enriched experiences’ are essential to facilitate neuroplasticity (the ability of the brain to change continuously throughout an individual’s life) as a basis for improved function and participation in daily activities. Feeding the body with movement also helps calm and organise the nervous system, which not only helps children focus but reduces anxiety and promotes good sleep. So, when the house is still and you collapse at the end of the evening, you can do so in the knowledge that after a day of jumping, rolling and balancing, you’ve supported your child’s learning. EDUCATION
DEALING WITH SCHOOL STRESS AND ANXIETY Stress and anxiety is affecting more children than ever before. We asked Mrs Thomlinson, Headmistress of St James Preparatory School in Kensington, what schools are doing to help. Gunnersbury Nature Reserve or Minstead Environmental centre in Hampshire. We see children come into their own when they get outside and are running around in the fresh air, getting their hands dirty, discovering creepy crawlies and climbing trees.
What does St James do to ensure positive mental wellbeing for its pupils? The happiness and wellbeing of all has underpinned the ethos of St James Prep since its foundation in 1975. Every day we say the Prayer for Humanity: May all be happy, May all be without disease, May all creatures have wellbeing, And none be in misery of any sort, May peace and peace and peace be everywhere. It is not by chance that our ethos is to provide an education, which seeks to promote and support the spirit of unity so that everyone may be happy and enjoy wellbeing. The popularity of mindfulness in schools to tackle mental health issues has increased significantly. Is this effective? In our fast-moving lives, times of quiet can remind us of what is beyond the noise and stresses of the day. We value stillness and the opportunity this affords to connect to something beyond the pulls and pressures of the day. Children and staff ‘pause’ or take a moment of mindfulness as often as fifteen to twenty times a day. This is unique to St James and the staff and children all value it greatly. In the weekly philosophy lessons a longer 32 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
‘pause’ or meditation is practiced.
All parents want their children to be happy. But they also want great academic results. Are both possible? Of course! Academic success, creative development and spiritual thinking are not mutually exclusive. This blend encourages an overall love of learning and peace of mind. Pupils can get great results without getting stressed about it!
Is it a challenge to get the younger children to sit still? Not at all. In fact, we even practise a mini pause with our new nursery children who joined us this September. With increasing academic pressure on pupils from a very young age, laying these important foundations from the start of their educational journey is so important. Other than mindfulness, what other ways can schools promote mental wellbeing? Being a central London school, we are very aware of the importance of giving the children the opportunity to connect with nature and the numerous benefits that this brings to their overall wellbeing. We feel this so strongly that the Head’s holiday homework is for the children to read every day, get fresh air every day and do something kind for somebody every day. We have worked with the council to develop a Forest School in the public park outside our playground, so we have lots of trips to the ‘forest’ and forests further afield such as

EDUCATION NEWS NEW HEAD FOR FALCONS PRE-PREP
CENTENARY CELEBRATIONS
Ms Liz McLaughlin is the new head of Falcons Pre-Prep, taking over from Mr Forbes this autumn. She has worked in various primary sector leadership roles in Canada, Italy, USA and the UK and holds a particular passion for literacy. She is looking forward to the challenge. “I have made it clear to parents and teachers that I am not coming to the Falcons Pre-Prep to change it – I am coming to help it continue as a school that excels due to its high expectations of the boys, whilst also taking care of their wellbeing” explains Liz. “From my first interview at the school, to an evening where I met the parents, I have been drawn to, and inspired by, the shared vision of academic excellence for the boys whilst also ensuring a nurturing and caring environment.” Liz is resolute on the benefits that a single-sex school can offer: “Boys and girls learn differently. It is proven by research and also if you were to ask any primary school teacher about their experiences teaching boys and girls. By having a boys only environment, we can intentionally design our curriculum to suit their needs and to enhance their skills.”
This year, ArtsEd is celebrating 100 years of educational excellence. Sixth formers also added to celebrations with the school’s best results in BTECs with a superb 100% Triple Distinction and above (equivalent to three A levels at A and A* grade), with 85% achieving Triple Distinction (D* D* D*). A-levels also saw a 100% pass rate with 30% of all A level results at A* / A, and overall 78% of all results were A* - B, which is the highest figure on record and significantly above the national average.

BURSARIES AT ACS INTERNATIONAL SCHOOL ACS International Schools is offering bursaries to children aged 11+, 13+ and 16+ at its three UK campuses in Cobham, Egham and Hillingdon for the 2019/20 academic year. The bursaries are offered to students who will benefit most from an ACS education, including the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum, but might not otherwise be able to attend the school. The financial awards will range from 20-100 per cent of the schools’ fees, with all bursaries awarded on a means-tested basis and dependent on the student’s individual circumstance. ACS Hillingdon International School’s Class of 2019 recently achieved a remarkable 100 per cent IB pass rate this year, with an average score of 31 points, which is equivalent to 180 UCAS points. To put this into perspective, on average three A* grades at A Level are worth 168 UCAS points. To find out more visit: acs-schools.com/bursaries
TOP GRADES AT ST BENEDICTS The number of A*/A grades achieved by students at St Benedict’s, Ealing, is up again this year, at 42.2%. This is the highest proportion of top grades achieved at the school for the last 6 years. 80% of exams in Art and at least 60% of exams in Drama, German, History and Maths scored A* or A grades. Headmaster, Andrew Johnson, said: “It is excellent to see top grades up once again at St Benedict’s. I offer my warmest congratulations to our students and their teachers, who have worked so hard to achieve such impressive results”.
NEW CAMPS FOR CREATIVE THINKERS The Museum of Architecture is launching two Autumn causes for budding Architects. The first, Nature’s Architects introduces biomimicry, and shows how architecture draws from lessons in nature and is inspired by animal builders. Children will build and create architectural models from these lessons and be able to take home their own creation. The second, I Want to be an Architect, runs during half-term and covers city planning, from transportation, parks, homes and infrastructure.

READING
SCHOOL REPORTS Hilary Barry, Director of Teaching and Learning at Highfield and Brookham School in Liphook, Hampshire, demystifies school reports.
T
he annual school report undoubtedly has something of a bad press and sometimes with good reason. On the one hand, parents are critical of reports, frustrated by blandness, a computer-generated feel or lack of personalisation. On the other hand, 21st century teachers find reports time consuming to write in amongst their other professional commitments. Furthermore, they’re often written at the busiest point in the term so as to have the most current information as possible included. On top of this, thanks to this age of instant communication, a natural by-product has been the automatic ability to question something that has been said or written. As such, many teachers will phrase their report to protect themselves from the injurious consequences of being able to openly
communicate your child’s learning profile and traits. So, how can parents make best use of their child’s report? Celebrate the positives with your child, as praise and encouragement act as a valuable catalyst for greater things. If your child is showing real flair or interest in a particular subject, is there a way you could foster this further at home? For example, entering a library reading or writing competition, joining a children’s sports camp, finding a Spanish pen friend, visiting a science museum or putting on a performance for friends and family. But what about the less positive comments? Seize them as an opportunity! Such comments have been included in your child’s report for no other purpose than to guide them and improve their learning. We must be mindful of building an entirely protective cocoon around our youngsters
“
He will either go to prison or become a millionaire. (Sir Richard Branson’s school report from Stowe School)
as the world into which they will enter post schooling will not constantly build them up. If you find yourself disagreeing with what a teacher has said in their report, take the time to reflect on the comments. It is entirely natural to leap to the defence of your child, but could there be any truth in what their teacher has written? Is this information new or have you heard it before? Speak with your child to see what their thoughts are both on the feedback and what they think they could do to address the areas raised. Then, if you still find yourself dissatisfied or uncertain, contact the teacher asking them if they could provide further information on the points they have raised.

Scotland Sleeper What could be more thrilling for little ones that an overnight trip on a train? Climbing aboard in the evening, having supper in the buffet car, then snuggling down for the night in a comfy bunk and being rocked to sleep by the train. Waking up the following morning hundreds of miles away in a new exciting place. The new £150m fleet of Caledonian Sleeper trains was unveiled earlier this year and are a fantastic – and comfortable – way to take children to Scotland. The new trains run on the Lowlander route from London to Edinburgh and Glasgow, this September have just launched on Highlander route to Aberdeen, Inverness and Fort William. There are interconnecting, ensuite rooms that are perfect for families. Plus, children aged four and under travel free of charge and under 12s eat free from the on-board menu when with a paying adult. Such an accessible, but exciting way for kids to experience the fun of a sleeper train. Visit sleeper.scot to find out more and book.
Thinking about your next ski holiday? If you are busy parents with no time to wade through loads of websites Mountain Beds can help you, a small ski accommodation agency run by sisters Melissa and Camilla Brownlow. “We pride ourselves in going the extra mile to help clients find the best ski holiday for their budget and requirements. It gives us great pleasure when we know we have found the perfect match. Call us old fashioned but many people want to speak to someone and discuss their wishes. It saves time to talk so we can work out exactly what you are looking for from holidays you have enjoyed before; the abilities and ages of the ski group; and what is important to you. As well as the wonderful catered holidays available you can now book selfcatered accommodation with oven-ready food delivery which is proving a popular option”. The price is usually the same as booking the holiday direct with the supplier and having been in the ski industry for over 30 years, they are recognized as Verbier Specialists, working with an enormous number of ski companies, hotels and private owners across the Alps.

Brilliant New Career Opportunities Support children with emotional, behaviour and mental health problems. Do you have experience of working with children professionally? The APAC courses are the only ones A £2 billion boost in funding is being made available for children’s mental health in the UK. The register of Play and Creative Arts Therapists accredited by the Professional Standards Authority will give you a big opportunity in taking advantage of it. When trained to the required standards you could work full time, part time or as an independent private practitioner. Courses run Friday to Sunday to minimise your time away from work. WHO ARE? BLOOM & BLOSSOM PEOPLE
JULIA YULE & CHRISTINA MOSS, CO-FOUNDERS place of authenticity, flowing from the products we need and want as parents. We developed incredible pregnancy products when we were pregnant and incredible baby products when our children were babies. So, it was almost a given we would bring out products for older children as ours grew up. As parents we know the importance of routine in promoting quality sleep, and reading plays an integral part in that. Reading should be
Three words to describe yourselves. Julia: Committed, honest and a giggle. Christina: Determined, loyal and fun. What’s it like working with a relative? [They are sisters-in-law] J: At first our family thought it could be too close to home, but we really are each other’s biggest supporters. We give each other the sanity check we know is essential in business. We support each other emotionally and physically. We don’t take ourselves too seriously and, as we build Bloom and Blossom, we are enjoying seeing ourselves develop as business women and as parents, this ensures our brand continues to grow authentically. What’s the most challenging thing you’ve faced while being in business? C: Business is challenging, that is the truth, but we have learnt to embrace that. Managing manufacturing, NPD, retailers and customers makes it the rollercoaster ride that it is but we are happy with that and know it will continue. We take time to look back and evaluate decisions, the right ones and the wrong ones, to ensure we learn along the way. We are brave, we take leaps, and we aren’t scared to try new things, and with that we also take on the challenges of business, but that is half the fun. It is a little bit bonkers, but we wouldn’t change a thing. How did the initial collaboration with Roald Dahl come about? C: All our product development comes from a 62 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
also enjoying the London parks, grabbing a picnic, taking in the views and enjoying walks around the city, when the weather permits. Where’s your favourite place to go in London with the children? J: The Southbank. Walking along there with the children is incredible, taking in the views, the atmosphere and the entertainers. C: Kew Gardens. It’s got everything. The new children’s playground is insane. Just make sure you book in advance! Tell us one thing that people don’t know about you. C: I bought my first house on a property TV show. J: I have a Blue Peter badge. What would you take to a desert island? J: Suncream and Spotify. C: Complete library of Sex And The City and a lifetime supply of mango sorbet.
part of every child’s day and particularly their switch off process at bedtime. Who better than to partner with the world’s number one author Roald Dahl. Two British brands in partnership promoting the importance of sleep. Last book you read? J: Sara Cox’s Till the Cows Come Home: A Lancashire Childhood. I am from Lancashire, I adore Sara Cox’s writing, her humour and outlook on life. C: I AM, I AM, I AM by Maggie O’Farrell. A brilliant biography of one of my all-time favourite authors and her many brushes with life and death. What’s your top tip for date night in London? J: A top tip for date nights in London is to try something new. We are so lucky to live and work on the doorstep of one of the best cities in the world and there is always something wonderful and new to explore. Some favourites include Palomar (amazing middle Eastern food) and Kyseri (Turkish) but
Signature dish? C: Cooking is not my forte, but I do a mean Indian takeaway… J: I love cooking, particularly cooking for friends and family. A favourite of mine is crab linguine – super simple, but so tasty. And then throw in some Ottolenghi inspired salads…I could go on and on, don’t get me started on puddings! Your proudest moment? C: My daughter recently won a coveted award at school for kindness. I really couldn’t ask for more. Very proud mother! What’s next on the list of things to do? C: Is world domination too much? We have big, exciting plans ahead. Watch this space…! Read the extended version of this interview over at citykidsmagazine.co.uk. bloomandblossom.com beautybanks.org.uk
