Interview
“It’s been one hell of a ride” Maggie Bolger’s journey from a small family run playgroup to two well developed family clubs with over 60 staff based in Kensington and Chiswick has been “one hell of a ride”. Not bad for a girl from New Zealand who only came to England when she got bored with university.
M
but the story of this local entrepreneur and her business dream began over a decade ago in Kensington. Like most new mums, Maggie and her friend Rose would often discuss how much their lives had changed since becoming parents. They found that their old haunts were no longer suitable with the kids in tow, and the alternatives that did cater for parents and children were not that appealing.
“
There was just nowhere I felt that we belonged that was for families that was like-minded people, where everybody’s in the same boat. If your kid’s screaming, you get looks of sympathy rather than death stares.
The Kensington site proved that Maggie was on to something and after looking at various areas, it became clear that Chiswick was a hotspot for families. She couldn’t believe her luck when she found the property on Essex Place. “If you’d said to me a few years ago, ‘Write down all the things you want in a venue,’ when we found this one I almost cried. It’s basically got everything. It had the D1 usage for a nursery but nurseries didn’t look at it because it had a car park out the back which was hideous, and the roof terrace wasn’t done; it was just a tiny little pot hole that you went through the toilet to have a look up. So I poked my head up on a really windy wet day and it was up here?’ and he said, ‘Love, if you can get planning permission you can have a roof terrace.’ I love a challenge.”
“
THE PERFECT PROPERTY So, after running some classes in her front room, Maggie begged,
cafés and restaurants had become more child-friendly, she knew that her members club had to be unlike anything else on offer. Artistic Maggie had found her blank canvas and now all she had
Kensington, which would become “the original family members club.” Along the way, she learned about running a business and blagging her way through meetings with the men in suits. “I had to leave a meeting once because someone said you’re the CEO of the company and I had to go out and ‘Google’ ‘CEO’.”
a property consultant who persuaded landlords and investors to take her seriously. The scale of the Chiswick project was huge – she raised £2m to set it up - and Maggie admits she could have done a runner if she’d sat down long enough to consider it.

“Most people just open a members’ club, most people just open a classes franchise, most people just open a restaurant, but we’re doing all four under one roof, at one time, with a very small team and actually with not that much investment to cover everything that you’re trying to do. And if I’d thought about that, if I’d actually written down everything, we wouldn’t have done it. I would have bailed out at the last minute.” HOME FROM HOME On meeting Maggie you can’t imagine her bailing out of anything. She’s friendly, talkative and very passionate about brand M&R. She’s also clearly determined and confesses she’s an all or nothing kind of girl, but that doesn’t mean that she’s impulsive. She thinks painstakingly about decisions that will affect her business and her family. Attention to detail is key for her, it’s part of the personal approach the club takes with its members, and it’s not lost within the walls of the whopping 12,500 square feet site. The wooden discos run in a reclaimed double decker bus. There’s a cinema Village Nursery. The space has a relaxed, home from home feel, inspired by NY loft living. What makes the scale of Maggie’s achievements even more mindboggling is the fact she has four children the last of whom, Ollie, was born in the midst of planning applications and fund raising. Like many working mums she’s found the challenge of balancing work life and family life impossible at times. “I have a lot of guilt but I still feel guilty and if I had a nanny I’d feel guilty. The girls in particular get it, I remember, they had a moan because they it up and I can come back to being at home’ and they were like, ‘No! we love Maggie and Rose, don’t give it up, don’t do that. Just be nice to see you more!’” Maggie’s four children have been her greatest critics and have played a huge part in the shaping of the club. She freely admits that without them there would be no Maggie and Rose. They happen to think her business is “pretty epic” and while Ollie, 3, is a

India, 9) help research new art classes for the holidays. The home from home feel, the friendly, unpretentious family vibe is something the staff must buy into too. Maggie & Rose place great emphasis on someone’s personality and get-upand-go, often forgoing a CV if the person seems to have the right attitude. “In some instances now, we don’t even ask for a CV, we’ve actually given up. Please don’t send us a CV, we don’t really care if you have a degree or not. Write us a covering letter, tell us who you are, tell us why you should work for us.” Staff members include Mr Maggie (or Sean as he’s otherwise known) who gave up his own career to get involved with the Maggie & Rose project.
“
You have to have a very, very, very strong marriage to work together. It’s marital bliss.
“
“
Opening a nursery, opening a brasserie, a restaurant, everyone was like, are you insane?
It’s also not necessarily a purely altruistic move on his part given he shares Maggie’s view that Maggie & Rose has the potential to be “massive”. THE SKY’S THE LIMIT When we got to the end of our meeting, I asked Maggie what was next on her agenda. She strikes me as someone who is always looking for the next project. Could world domination be next? She started to tell me that her stock answer is usually no, not But then she paused and admitted that she didn’t want to be quite so reserved anymore: “Everywhere in the world needs somewhere like this and it doesn’t exist. We have a great nursery; we have a great community style club thing for families…so why not?”

Parenting
SCREEN TIME: How much is TOO much? TVs and tablets can provide parents with valuable time to get dressed, make meals and generally get stuff done. But we all have moments when we’ve wondered if they’re watching
too much or if what they’re watching is appropriate. Dr Lucinda Shoolbred takes a look at screen time and offers some tips to try to get the balance right.
A
dvice from experts seems confusing and sometimes at odds with the reality of being a busy parent, so I would like to share some simple and clear facts and tips on this topic. By ‘screen time’ I imagine you’ve guessed that we mean time spent on screens: tablets, PCs, smartphones, handheld devices, television…the list is long. The American Academy of Pediatrics, recommends that babies under two have NO screen time at all. Studies have shown that unlike school-age children, infants do not have the skills to comprehend what they are watching. So while we may kid ourselves that watching something educational is better than Tom and Jerry, we’re really just pacifying our guilt rather than teaching our kids anything.
that exposure to any gadgets causes long-term developmental problems, it is generally agreed that there should be no passive screen time. That means no plopping in front of the TV or having it on in the background.
If toddlers are watching TV, it’s far better to watch with them, commenting on what they are seeing.
It has also been argued that screen time can impact on the development of language skills and the ability to process information. While
It goes without saying that we should make sure the programmes they watch are age appropriate, but it may not be so obvious what constitutes an age appropriate programme. Watching alongside your child allows you to monitor if this is the case or not. This goes for smartphones and tablets too. The website www.commonsensemedia.org is a helpful site to check for reviews and age ratings on
experts cannot provide any concrete evidence
Movies, Apps and Games.
Some tips to try to get the balance right: Set screen time limits. Don’t be afraid, this is our job as parents! Have a screen routine e.g. one hour TV after school before tea time Involve your child in reinforcing the limits: ask them to turn off the TV
Dr Lucinda Shoolbred is a senior Chartered Clinical Psychologist experienced in providing treatment, supervision and training in psychological therapies within the NHS and privately. She is passionate about working with children and adolescents and their families. 12 CITY KIDS
Keep TVs and computers out of bedrooms Stop Wifi at bedtime and hand over smartphones and tablets Turn off ‘background TV’ Screen free meal times, including parents! No passive watching, we must join in, ask questions Monitor what is being watched or the internet sites visited and consider blocking inappropriate websites - there is software which you can install on your home computer to control this Think about the example we are setting children through our own screen time behaviours
Parenting As children get older things get more complicated, in part due to the skills and protecting them from any negative impacts on their wider development.
The consensus amongst experts is that children, including adolescents, should ideally not have more than 1-2 hours screen time a day (excluding homework). Research shows we are a long way from this ideal, with the average 8 year old spending an eye-watering eight hours a day in front of a screen. That means the average 8 year old must be on a screen till at least 10.30pm at
Fit kids Government guidelines suggest kids need to be active for at least 60 minutes a day to stay healthy. That might busy schedules, so Amanda Frolich from Amanda’s Action Club has some ideas to get us all moving.
Visit the playground Challenge the children to play on as many pieces of equipment as they can and allow 30 seconds of short bursts of action on each one.
Walking to school
a startling 11 hours a day (Kaiser Family Foundation, 2010).
If it’s just not practical to leave the car at home then park or drop your kids ten minutes away from the school gates so they get some activity into their day
This excessive screen time has been linked to an increased risk of obesity, irregular sleep patterns (also linked to obesity as fatigue increases snacking), behavioural problems, school problems and aggressive attitudes and increased thoughts about sex.
Hula hooping competitions
If your adolescent son or daughter has unrestricted internet access in their they are on their own. The potential impact of social media sites and/ or pornographic sites on suggestible teenagers has become an increased concern amongst parents. Unrestricted and unmonitored access can be a problematic combination. Some teenagers can take the need to be continually updating social media sites to an unhealthily obsessive level and to the detriment of focusing on anything else. A cyber fantasy life can be all-consuming with the inevitable consequences; school work suffers
Research into the effects of screen time in the UK is still limited and on-going, so for me, parental interest and knowledge of the internet is another element to be factored in to the important and tricky task of setting limits and house rules. As ever in this area we, as parents, need to be consistent. We need to come up with family activities that do not involve a screen, and we need to demonstrate this behaviour too – many of us are as guilty as children in our obsessive checking of mobile phones or Blackberrys! Don’t get me wrong, this is no easy task, when we are busy and the grotty British weather can limit our desires to be outside. If you have any concerns about internet content in particular, the NSPCC has an excellent site www.thinkuknow.co.uk.
There’s a lot more than you think that can be done with the humble hula hoop. Its is a great way to exercise the waist but you can also see how far you can throw it and have it roll back to you or try skipping with it around your ankle.
Limbo dancing competitions You can use a rope or a broom for this simple activity. Challenge the children to go as low as they can without touching. You can even do this at home on a rainy day!
AS A FAMILY Getting active with the kids is a great way to help you stay healthy too.
Family Disco Its amazing how much energy you can burn dancing and how letting loose can really make you feel good! Pump up the volume to a few favourite songs and boogie away. Make up dance moves as you go and get the kids to copy.
Tail Tag Use colourful scarves as tails for all the children tucked into their waistband or t-shirt. The children then run around in different directions and the adult has to catch as many tails as possible in a certain time.
