hen my daughter was two she marched into nursery and never looked back. No tears, no clingy-ness, no trauma for either of us. I was pleased, if a little smug that my little girl was so self-assured. So it came as quite a shock that school was a different matter entirely. Amanda Frolich is celebrating 25 years of Amanda’s Action Club with a party at Chiswick Town Hall on 23rd September. She’ll be joined by Alison Wheeler, former lead singer of The Beautiful South as well as Lil Tim who was part of the choreography team at London 2012. Amanda is well-known for providing entertainment to thousands of children, but it’s her passion for giving kids a healthy and active lifestyle which keeps her motivated. HATLEY WILL BE CELEBRATING A YEAR IN CHISWICK THIS AUTUMN WITH A PARTY ON 1ST OCTOBER. The Canadian brand was founded in 1984 by Alice Oldland and her husband John and began life in a small lakeside village in Quebec called Hatley. Alice’s paintings of farmyard animals were transformed by John into aprons, which led to more clothing lines and gifts. When Alice and John retired, they handed the reins to their three sons who have developed the Hatley brand worldwide.
West London’s newest dental centre is just for kids and teenagers. Dental Kids, led by Professor Dimitris Emmanouil, takes a holistic approach to wellness and child development and provides the latest prevention and treatment options. The Professor lectures at Kings College London, the University of Athens Dental School and Harvard, meaning that his patients have access to the very latest developments in dentistry for children, as well as his years of valuable experience. The practice has a bespoke playground in reception, plus a tv above the dentist’s chair.
The company is now well known for its line of children’s clothing which includes rain gear and swimwear as well as classic and comfortable women’s day wear and accessories. O BE A PARENT IS TO BE BLINDSIDED BY QUESTIONS such as, why do men have nipples? Do the people at the bottom of the world fall off it? Is the orange man with the weird hair going to be president of America? The parent charter reads that you will have ready answers. This is why Google and Siri are up there
with A&E staff and good teachers as vital parent go-tos. (As regards Donald Trump, your child’s judgement will be every bit as valid as any psephologist’s.)
When we have children we are told to follow our intuition. Might that be the same intuition that tells us tequila slammers are a good idea? As the new school year starts City Kids brings you the best pieces of parenting advice that we have gleaned from friends, family and those we admire.
Babies
Parenting
•
You will not go to hell for not being able to breastfeed.
•

You will treat your first baby like Granny’s fine china, the last one like a rugby ball. Both are ok.
Try not to judge the actions of fellow parents. Particularly if they have children older than yours.
•
Parenting books have the capacity to induce panic rather than quell it.
When a child asks you a difficult question, buy yourself some time and ask them, ‘What do you think?’
•
Cinderella got it right (in the 2015 film version with Lily James, at least). The tenets to being a good person are to have courage and be kind. Twofold, simple and yet über clever.
•
Children make mistakes. You need to figure out how to pick up the pieces.
•
Nature and nurture – the debate still rages. What is important is that the nurture fits the nature.
•
Children will copy what you do, not what you tell them to do.
•
Children are people. Often their ideas, unfettered by the negativity of age, will be better than yours. Often they will be terrible.
•
If you’re going to call a girl bossy, make sure the same behaviour in a boy warrants the same adjective. Swap the child’s gender in your head and save them from negative gender stereotyping.

Treat siblings as a team, not as competitors.

Place a coverless hot water bottle on a wet mattress to dry it out.

Marketeers are good at their jobs. Do not listen to them. You do not need special pots for freezing baby food. Ditto nappy bins that stop the smell. A baby bath? WTF…

If you have a daughter, Google the comedic genius Tina Fey’s Prayer for My Daughter. She provides no answers but knowing that Tina Fey fears the same stuff as us is comfort enough.

A rolled-up towel, blanket or swimming noodle placed under the sheet on the side of a bed is the perfect alternative to a plastic bed rail. A pillow on the floor softens any fall.

Release yourself from the burden of homework by finding a local sixth-former with gumption to lead your child through this minefield.
•
Instead of buying a bigger car when you have your third child, try buying narrower car seats.
•
•
Write your phone number on your child’s arm or get temporary tattoos with it on for when you are in a crowded place.
The subject of schools will dominate your conversation for years. You will worry that you haven’t got it right. You will make the best decision possible at the time.
•
Tutors. Eventually you will realise that every child you know is being tutored. The price is exhorbitant.
•
Getting a secondary school place in London is up there with moving house and divorce as far as stress levels go.
•
School clothes do not need to be washed and ironed every day for who is to know if it is today’s dirt and creases or yesterday’s?
•
Get your babysitter to come early enough to cover tea, bath and bed. It’s called getting your money’s worth…
•
The first time you encourage your small child to try fizzy water, lemon and/or ice cream they will pull the best surprised face of their life. This is permitted cruelty.
•
Kitchen roll when upright makes an exemplary ice cream cone stand.
•

A balloon is a winning present every time. It fits in an envelope, can be used for tennis, football, volleyball or wet farting noises.
If you choose/are offered a poor fit of secondary school when your child is 11, you may get a second stab at 13.

Academic achievement is overrated. Education is a much broader, rounded effort.
•
Where you come in a family, oldest, youngest or in the middle, will inform much of your life. It is impossible to know what it’s like to be someone of a different rank.
•

Never go the beach without talcum powder - it cleans all sand off sticky, salty bottoms, balls (both kinds) and feet.
If you can (sort of) afford private education for a few years only, make it the middle ones. The longer days and extracurricular activities will help stem teenage boredom and keep your kids out of trouble.

The positive power of sport is jaw-droppingly brilliant. Friendships are born this way. Sport is fun.
•
Wipes. Handbag, kitchen table, car. They are indispensable.
•
Expensive holidays are wasted on children younger than eight. However, they may not be a waste for the exhausted parents.

A simple guideline for holidays is that it has to be easier, better and more comfortable than home. The Luxury Family Hotels range in this country is popular for a reason.

Good mental and physical wellbeing can, for the most part, be maintained with three things: a good diet, enough exercise and sufficient sleep. This is the non-negotiable holy trinity.
Technology •
Technology is wonderful when used wisely. If you don’t want your children playing certain games, don’t give them access. Simple…

Try to get your child into a sport or hobby when they are young so that they have an interest to distract them from screens when they are teens.
•
…except if you are being a stick-in-the-mud luddite. Get with the programme.
•
You will know you are old when you ask your children how to work every piece of tech you own. Live with it.
•
The bedroom is a sanctuary for sleep and, as such, should be a screen- and homework-free zone. (We repeat) sleep is the basis of good physical and mental health. For life.
•
Have a family computer in a living space where the screen can be seen by everyone. You can see what your children are doing online and they will learn the vital skill of being able to work with background noise.
•
Let your children read your phone messages and know your access code. This will give you leverage with their phones. Do as you would be done by.
T
his list is not meant to be dictatorial and is certainly not exhaustive. Being a parent, however, is exhausting. Sometimes it all becomes overwhelming. That is when you need to call on your friends and slam those tequilas. You can then discuss the important things in life, such as why do men have nipples? LEARNING CURVES
In education or corporate speak a ‘Learning Curve’ is officially the rate at which one progresses in gaining new skills or experience. When it comes to parenthood, can we please ditch the gentle, enticing ‘curve’ bit for a sheer, terrifying, vertical ascent, endured at a G-force-inducing speed that rollercoaster scientists can merely fantasise about? This isn’t a learning curve. It’s a reverse bungee from a cannon holding hands with Tim Peake. There you were, your substantial brain power absorbed all those years by study, work, social diary management and office gossip, when suddenly your periods stop, your boobs get big and your mind becomes imbued with words, facts and NHS protocol previously unimagined, and all usual means of control are rendered obsolete. “What do you mean I must wait an hour for my midwifery appointment? What is a low-lying placenta? What is Braxton Hicks? Why the hell is everyone I meet doing Hypnobirthing? Will we ever cope as parents?”
You’re sent home to teach yourself how to breast-feed thanks to appalling postnatal support for new mums and weep at the desperate crossroads of carrying on or giving up. You had no idea how hard this would be. On top of this, you’ve signed up to a hands-on crash-course of baby care including modules on nappy-changing, dressing, bathing, swaddling, winding, rocking, pushing and slingwearing with extra credits for mollifying two sets of grandparents; placating potential Godparents and updating well-meaning friends on Facebook who send sad faces if you haven’t posted a baby picture in the last five minutes.

But you read, you listen, you attend groups and soak up knowledge with an absorbency that ‘Always’ would be proud of. Yes, you’re on the ‘curve’ with your over-head harness strapped on, but – brace yourself – Mother Nature’s finger is merely hovering over the button. One day you yell from the loo, “I think I lost my mucus plug!” and hubby mumbles, “Where did you last see it?” (he also learnt a tonne of stuff…just maybe not quite as much as you) and a baby arrives! It’s that simple. As if.
It seems that everyone else is breezing along, dipping their fingers into a cool stream of contentment while you lurch from hour to hour, unsure of every…little...god-damn…thing and straining to remember who you used to be and what that life felt like. There is no graduation ceremony; pay-rise or commendation. But there is a heart-melting, inexplicable, species-ensuring love that keeps you getting up in the night and smiling at the scent of their lips, even when they’ve crapped over three consecutive babygros at 2.45am.
During labour you learn that there are incredible, unknown people catching babies with kindness and compassion (you may also learn that there are some who do so without such qualities). You experience sensations that are purely unique to birth and discover exactly what the human body is capable of. You look in your partner’s eyes and know that whatever happens in the future you went through this shit together. Then your seconds-old baby looks you in the eye and the turbo-power of the knowledge ‘curve’ is given a time-bending boost. But for a moment you’re no longer flying skyward but falling into a deep and terrifying love for this new human who you must keep alive.
Can I offer any words of comfort? Does the ‘curve’ ever slow and bend or the pressure lift? Not really. But you will never feel that same terror of transformation that comes with a first baby. All major sacrifices have been made by the time number two comes along (lie-ins, spontaneity, impromptu sex) and the chances are you will enjoy the experience of getting to know your baby infinitely more. But no matter how old our children become, it seems that we never hop off the ‘curve;’ it merely changes as we cram our frazzled brains with facts on childcare, schools, friendships, exams, music lessons, sports teams…and on, and on and on…So perhaps, given that we spend so much time educating our kids about the world, we should take a moment to consider how much they teach us – and acknowledge that although we’re knackered - we’re a lot wiser for it.

Suddenly you learn that it never actually mattered if your bosoms looked good in a t-shirt (damn those years of self-doubt!) as they were intended all-along to feed a hungry little munchkin looking for antibodies. Who knew?! And, perhaps you learn that after years of being quite fond of your vagina you now view it with a certain anger as you lower yourself into yet another soothing bath.

Ghostly Loo Roll Bowling Get 10 new loo rolls and in black marker draw some scary eyes on each one. Stack them up in a pyramid with five on the bottom row, then 4, 3, 2 and 1 on the top. Depending on the age of the players take 10 paces back and create a line behind which to throw from. Each child has three pumpkins to throw down the ‘alley’ and knock as many of them down as possible. Mummies Split the group into two teams and give them 5 loo paper ghosts each. The teams then nominate a ‘Mummy’ who, on the word ‘go’, must be completely wrapped in as much loo roll as possible. The winners are the team which has wrapped their mummy the most effectively in two minutes. A second quick competition is to challenge the teams to unwrap their mummy and sit down the fastest. Giants, Wizards and Trolls This game is very similar to the ever-popular “Rock, Paper, Scissors”, but much more active! The game is best played in a gym or other similar room. Divide the children into two teams. The teams gather at opposite ends of the gym and decide which creature they want to be for the first round: either Giants, Wizards or Trolls. The whole team must be the same creature. When both teams have decided, they line up, facing the other team, in the middle of the space. Everyone together yells “Giants! Wizards! Trolls!” and then whatever creature their team has decided to be. For example, a team who is Giants would yell: “Giants! Wizards! Trolls! GIANTS!” Now here’s the catch: Giants step on Trolls (i.e. Giants beat Trolls), Trolls tickle Wizards, and Wizards zap Giants. In each round, whichever team “beats” the other team must chase the losers 20 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
back towards their side of the gym. For example, if one team yells “Giants!” and the other yells “Trolls!”, the Giants have won (remember Giants step on Trolls). So the Giants chase the Trolls back to their side of the gym. Anyone on the losing team to be tagged before they can touch their wall of the gym now belongs to the other team. In rounds where both teams end up being the same creature, consider it a tie and start over. Play the game until most of the children are on one team. In addition, there are actions to do for each of the creatures during the yell that starts off each round. Giants: raise arms high overhead; Wizards: arms in front of body as if throwing a magic spell; Trolls: hunch down curl arms inwards. Pumpkin Pop Get enough orange balloons so that each child has two. Tie an elastic band into the knot when inflating them and place the ‘pumpkins’ around each ankle of each child. Choose some cool Halloween music and when you press play the children must dash around trying to smash the other children’s pumpkins. The last few children with unsmashed pumpkins are the winners! Witches Hat Rings For this you need six witches hats and a packet of glow bracelets. Place the six hats in a triangle close together, make up lots of magic glowing circles (quoits) with two of the bracelets making up one circle and finally make a line behind which the children can throw the magic circles. The children get a point for each ring the get over the point of the witches hats. You can score this in teams or individually and add a few bracelets to the rings to make the game easier if needs be. www.sharkyandgeorge.com

COMPACTSPACES 1.
To the top - think vertically and take it up to the ceiling. Most people neglect their ceiling height... a triple bunk bed takes up the same floor footprint as a single bed leaving valuable additional space. Children love sleeping stacked one above one another, and with more room space for them to play in, it’s win win.
2.
Build it in - it’s amazing how much you can pack into a small area if you go bespoke. It needn’t cost the earth, but the big advantage is you can utilize every millimetre of space to best advantage (and no nasty gaps where things don’t quite fit!). A cabin bed can have cupboards and drawers tucked underneath, a bookcase and wardrobes at one end (or both) and even a desk if designed well. It’s worth thinking about future needs too when going bespoke so you get the best out of the process.

Off the floor - wall mounting furniture will make a room feel bigger - it’s all about seeing under and around things that tricks the eye into thinking a space is bigger than it is. If you can, mount cupboards so they sit off the floor, the look is really quite dynamic.

Take storage to the ceiling - buy wardrobes and storage that go all the way up to ceiling height to give as much storage as possible. The more you can pack away into cupboards, the less cluttered a room will feel. Seasonalising wardrobes enables you to keep current clothing within easy reach for little ones, whilst those not needed can be popped at the top until needed.

Bookshelves - if there is limited space in the bedroom for a bookcase, and your little one is a bookworm, is there space on the landing for a one? Selecting a nightly read on their way to bed could also be a great way of creating into a good night time routine.

Truckles - are fab space savers, but they don’t have to accommodate a spare bed for an occasional sleepover. If space is at a premium, use a truckle drawer to house extra clothes or to keep your child’s precious things close at hand. You can always keep a blow up single mattress and pump handy in the drawer for sleepovers... and what child doesn’t like sleeping on an airbed

Trunks v chairs - in a compact room, a trunk will win any time. It provides valuable storage, takes up little space and you can pile cushions on top to transform it into a snug little seat. Multipurpose furniture is a must in small-scale spaces.

Keep the detailing simple - sleek, flat fronted, handle-less storage looks far less cluttering than fussy detailing with lots of colour. They are easy to wipe clean and if you paint the walls the same colour as the units, they will recede into the background, making the room feel larger than it is.
9.
Shelves or bedside tables - both, if you can spare the room. A bedside table can house a little night light and a safe place for a glass of water and a bedtime book (as well as valuable storage space). But consider also a slim wall shelf mounted next to the bed. It isn’t taking up precious floor space but still provides access for night time comforts.

10. ... and finally - although not strictly storage, keep colour to a minimum and use it where it will be a key focus. Too much colour will always make a small room feel more enclosed and messy. The adage “less is more” is so true! How about using a funky wallpaper or fluorescent paint inside a wardrobe for a surprising wow factor! Who knows, it may even encourage little ones to tidy up regularly...
Regularly de-cluttering a room can be cathartic; be ruthless with old playthings by giving quality items to charity, and if you can’t part with precious, memory filled toys and clothes, find space in the loft for them. fter the summer holidays, getting back into the swing of nursery or school runs, work and general day to day jobs can be a bit of a shock.
Here are two time-busting recipes to ease the pain and make light work in the kitchen. My Fish Finger Tortillas is what I call a flexi-recipe – either a family meal, or one where the kids eat earlier and the adults enjoy the meal (perhaps with a glass of wine) when the kids are in bed. Prepare and freeze the fish fingers ahead of time, then just cook when you need them.
And what better than a fast restaurant-style pudding that will beat having plain fruit or yogurt for dessert any day of the week. Of course, if you have a kitchen blowtorch, using that will be quicker than putting it under the grill, and adds drama to the recipe. The best bit of all is cracking the top of the brûlées with the spoon – the kids love it (and so do I!).
FISH FINGER TORTILLAS MAKES 2 adult or 4 kid-sized portions PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes COOKING TIME 6 minutes 250g / 9oz thick fish fillet, such as salmon, cod, haddock, pollock or other white fish 2 tbsp plain/all-purpose flour 1 egg, lightly beaten 75g/2.oz / 3/4 cup breadcrumbs 2–3 tbsp olive oil a pinch of sea salt (optional) 1.
Cut the fish into 12 finger shapes and season lightly with salt, if you like.

Put the flour, egg and breadcrumbs into three separate medium sized sandwich bags or shallow bowls. First, coat the fish fingers, a few at a time, in flour, then egg and finally turn gently in the crumbs so they are evenly coated. (The fish fingers can be prepared to this stage and kept in the refrigerator for a day or frozen for up to 3 months.)

FRUIT AND YOGURT BRULÉES MAKES 2 adult or 4 kid-sized portions PREPARATION TIME 5 minutes COOKING TIME 2 minutes 100-150g / 3-5oz fresh soft fruit, such as plums, berries, banana or mango a few drops of vanilla extract, rosewater or orange flower water 300ml / 10fl oz / scant 1 1/4 cup Greek yogurt 50g / 1oz / scant 1 3/4 cup caster sugar 1.
If the fruit is large, cut it into smaller pieces and spoon into the base of individual ramekin dishes. Mix the vanilla extract into the yogurt and spoon on top of the fruit. Smooth over the surface, cover and keep in the refrigerator if not eating straight away.

Preheat the grill to its hottest setting. Sprinkle the caster sugar over the yogurt in a thick, even layer. Put the ramekins onto a baking sheet and grill for 1–2 minutes until the sugar melts and is golden and bubbling. Remove from the grill and the sugar will set almost straight away. Serve immediately.

To cook, heat a frying pan over a medium heat and add the oil. If you plan on cooking just a few, use less oil. Once hot, add the fish fingers and cook for 2–3 minutes on each side until golden and cooked through. Alternatively, if you have the oven on, lightly toss the fish fingers in the oil, put on a hot baking sheet and cook for about 6 minutes until golden, turning halfway. (If cooking from frozen, add a couple of minutes on each side, and fry or bake until completely cooked through.) Once the fish fingers are cooked, either warm your tortillas in the microwave or lightly toast under the grill/broiler, then tailor-make your tortillas to everyone’s liking. Serve hot.

CH-CH-CH-CHANGES How to survive the first term The first sign may have been the Thomas train hurled across the room; the book slammed shut; or the lovingly prepared pasta pesto on the floor: it’s early September and things at home are not as they should be. Your darling - just starting nursery, primary or secondary - is struggling. Welcome to the world of a child in their first term of an educational step-change. The symptoms are remarkably similar across the ages: exhaustion, sulks, the occasional tantrum. And that’s just you. Imagine what it’s like for your poor kid. For all those struggling, we’ve pulled together a first term survival guide with tips from teachers and educational experts. Let’s face it, we all do the prep: we read starting-nursery picture books with our toddlers, we play word games with our four-year-olds, and we practice the bus route with our 11-year olds. But no matter what we do, there’s always a moment, however brief, where we think, is this the new real? The answer, obviously, is no; but here are some tips to refer to in the next month or two.
Park Tuition and Education Consultants. Give your little one a kiss and cuddle and make your exit quickly; if you’re worried call the nursery later to check in. In most cases, children settle very quickly once their parent leave. Ask if your son or daughter can bring in a special toy as a transition object. 2.
Keep an eye on how tired your child is. It’s not unusual that children have to drop a nap when they start nursery, so allow your son or daughter to miss a day occasionally if necessary. If childcare doesn’t permit that, go for an early bedtime. Regardless, just being at nursery can be exhausting, so be as flexible as possible. “You want it always to be something to look forward to, so play it by ear, and see how they are handling it,” Hook says.

Encourage independence. Children are empowered by small acts of independence: maybe it’s putting on their shoes, or their coats, or simply parking their scooter in the scooter park. Those small moves can go a long way to making the child feel in control. You’ll also likely be reinforcing what they are being encouraged to do at nursery.

Remember, it’s nursery, not school. Not a few parents worry that nursery isn’t academic enough. Sarah Raffray, headmistress at St. Augustine’s Priory, an all-through girl’s school in Ealing, says, “We’re not looking at output when they are so little. Nursery is about learning through play, about learning to learn.” Hook adds that every school introduces reading and phonics at Reception, so don’t worry too much about anticipating that in Nursery. “When they’re ready, they’re ready,” she says, adding that I-Spy and reading picture books together can lay a strong foundation for phonics and reading.
FROM HOME TO NURSERY Moving from the security of home to a room filled with at least a dozen other two- and three-year-olds is a shock to the system.

FROM NURSERY TO PRIMARY This can be an easier transition, particularly if the child is going to primary in the same setting as their nursery; or if the child has an older sibling at the school. Still, it can be quite a change. 1.
Manage the separation sensitively. If the nursery offers a period of transition, where you can sit in the room while your child gets comfortable, by all means take advantage of it. However, at some point you will need to leave, and for many kids, anticipating that moment is the hardest part. “Every teacher will tell you that [a child] will keep crying as long as his or her parent is in sight,” says Sabine Hook, former primary teacher and early years educational consultant at Holland

Talk to your child about how Reception is different from nursery. Ask your child’s teacher if you can have a copy of the weekly timetable, and talk to your child about what the plan is that day, Rebecca Leviston, Head of Lower School at Ravenscourt Park Preparatory School (RPPS), recommends. In some schools, children may travel to a different room for an art class - and the simple act of navigating a bigger space can seem overwhelming.

Keep an open line of communication with your child’s teacher. “It’s best to open up and talk to us about your child. It’s really important that as teachers that we really understand them as people,” Leviston says. She points out that some children make it very clear that they are struggling, which can make a teacher’s job easier. However, others keep their emotions in check at school and express them at home. Make sure you raise any concerns to the teacher.
3.
Keep increasing your child’s independence. Make sure that their toilet use is as independent as possible; go back to old training routines should there be any regression, Leviston says. Also, encouraging the use of a knife and fork at home can increase confidence at school lunchtime.
4.
Remember they all get there in the end. Reception is really about physical development, communication, understanding rules, and working with others, Hook reminds us. Be patient with the academics: some children gallop ahead while others take it more carefully. Raffray cautions parents not to compare their children to others. Advancing through the reading scheme, for example, “is not trophy-hunting,” she says. Educators also advise to not worry too much about homework. “You can actually hinder their learning by putting that subtle pressure on children,” Leviston says. Again, the message is, trust the school. “No matter what your child goes through, we have seen through a diversity of experiences that they always get there in the end,” Leviston says.
PRIMARY TO SECONDARY The move to secondary marks a dramatic shift in independence, which can make for a tricky transition for both child and parent. 1.
Big kids are small again. The most obvious change in secondary is physical. “A lot of youngsters come into secondary having been a big fish in small pond [at primary]; they are suddenly swamped in terms of the size of the school
and the size of students,” says Camilla Smiley, secondary school consultant at Holland Park Tuition and Education Consultants. St. Augustine’s Priory’s Raffray agrees: “Moving up is a challenge. It’s the sense of being one child in the midst of hundreds.” Add to this that now your Year 7 child is moving from class to class for different subjects, and they are often overwhelmed. “The learning curve is very sharp,” Smiley says. 2.
Help your child get organised. Here a little help goes a long way. Help them get their backpack ready the night before. Smiley recommends printing out a copy of the timetable and hanging it near where your child stores his or her bag so they have it to hand when they pack. Help them think through what homework is due the next day, later in the week and next week to foster basic study skills.
3.
Be proactive with the teacher. Compared to the cozy relationship that you may have had with your child’s primary teachers, secondary teachers are necessarily much more removed. For one, your child has different teachers for each subject; and secondly, as your child is likely to be getting to school on their own, you don’t have the daily interaction of drop-off. Smiley recommends reaching out early to the form teacher by email or in person to establish a relationship.
4.
Keep an eye on homework. Year 7s tend to be very keen to get things right in all aspects of school (Smiley says not to expect this to last past Year 9!) and can overwork their homework. Most teachers will recommend an amount of time to spend on a particular assignment. Review that timetable with your child, and speak to the teacher if they consistently go over the recommended time.
By Christmas, hopefully, you’ll have been through the worst of it. In fact, as often as not, the simple act of returning after the first halfterm makes what was once so strange and scary seem familiar. Regardless of when it happens, though, remember, as Raffray says “Every child really is unique; that’s not just the school talking.” CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 25

FLOATING FIREWORKS With Guy Fawkes around the corner, you can create your own spectacular display of colour without lighting a single sparkler!

Clean empty jam jar Water Bowl Food colouring
Fill the jar with water. Measure out three to four tablespoons of oil (whatever is handy in the kitchen) into the bowl. Add drops of different food colouring to the oil and mix gently with a fork. Then, carefully pour the oil/food colouring mix into the jar of water. The food colouring slowly sinks out of the oil and dissolves in the water, creating a mini firework visual effect.
HOW IT WORKS The food colouring dissolves in water and not oil. As the oil is less dense than water; it floats to the top; while the droplets of food colouring sink to the bottom; dissolving and dispersing in the water on the way. TOP TIP Food colouring will mix so don’t over-stir!

Place the gummy bear in a glass or bowl of water. Record what it looks like over time. Leave for four to ten hours. Has your gummy bear grown?
HOW IT WORKS The gummy bear absorbs water, a bit like a sponge, through osmosis. Osmosis is a process by which molecules (in this case water) move from an area of high concentration (the glass/bowl) to an area of low concentration (the gummy bear), causing the bear to swell. If you leave the bear long enough it will completely dissolve.
Place two cups on a solid surface and set the sheet of paper on top to build a bridge. Place the third cup on the centre of the paper. Does it hold? Add coins one by one to the balanced cup. Count how many are needed until the “bridge” gives way. Now take a second sheet of paper and fold it so it resembles a concertina. Repeat the experiment with this piece of paper. How many coins can be added to the balancing cup until the bridge gives way? This is a fun challenge to do with friends. The concertina “trick” will always win. Check out the difference between many, smaller folds and fewer, larger folds.
HOW IT WORKS Everything exerts a force, including the cup. The cup exerts a downward force on the flat paper; as it gets heavier with coins, the paper gives way. Folding the paper spreads the force across more paper, allowing it to support more weight than a flat piece of paper. Larger, fewer folds work better than many, smaller folds to support the weight of the cup as it is filled with pennies. Try it and see! CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 29

SCHOOL DIARIES
In the last issue we introduced you to two new schools meeting demand for places in West London: Falkner House Boys’ School and Ealing Fields. For the next year we’ll be following the Heads of both as they give us a behind the scenes look of how they’ve built their schools. In this issue we discover that finding a building to house a school is not a straight-forward task.

For four years, our family dreams of starting a boys’ school centered on finding the right property. After many false starts, on 2nd November 2015, we learned of a building for sale in Earls Court. On paper, it seemed perfect: educational planning, right size, right feel, right area, playground. Could this finally be it?
Just two days later we had a family tour of the property. It was love at first sight; and we decided then and there to go for it. It was going to be tight: the sellers wanted final offers in only a few weeks and contracts exchanged by Christmas. The competition was intense and we knew from experience that buildings like this were scarce. By mid-November we had a positive meeting with the bank but there was still no concrete financing. We needed a business plan and to determine the conversion costs. How we were going to finance it all? We were moved by a heart-warming offer of financial support from Falkner House families but decided to press on with external bank financing. Bidding on the property started mid-December, and as luck would have it, it went to a second round of bids just as we were off on a long-haul holiday with minimal access to communications. We placed our final offer over a bad line from the Recife airport café; and then we received the very exciting confirmation over an island breakfast. What relief and celebration! We spent our holiday en famille happily debating: what would be the approach to maths, which reading schemes and history topics? House names? Uniforms? Sports? It was becoming very real. Then in January, after a tense month of financial wrangling, the deal was done. Falkner House Boys’ School would open in September 2017 with a co-ed Nursery and a small initial Reception class, moving gradually to a two-form entry with 36 boys per year group. We began clearing the building, and as it opened up there were more exciting questions to answer. Should there be a dining room combined with a hall? Should the Nursery be on the ground floor? Should we replace the staircase? We spent hours and hours thinking about staircases—why am I so rubbish at thinking in 3D? There were sketches on backs of envelopes everywhere. But by March, with the aid of an architect, we had a clear plan; and on 1st July building work commenced…

As you read this, Ealing Fields has opened its doors. It’s not been an easy path from the dream of opening a new secondary school in Ealing, to welcoming our first cohort of students; but now there are 120 11-year-olds making their way to school, wearing their Ealing Fields’ school colours of purple and grey.

We knew early on what sort of school we wanted to open - one that encouraged students to love challenges and approach them calmly, confidently and with creativity. One where they enjoy effort and keep on learning – even when the going gets tough. So our immediate challenge was finding a home that would accommodate this vision. With a widely acknowledged dearth of available sites throughout London, we have moved into temporary accommodation for our early years at the Eversheds Sports Grounds (which are also our permanent playing fields). I won’t pretend it is ideal as it isn’t our permanent home. But it’s a solid structure with room for what we consider to be essential to our mission. And sitting on four and half acres of green space, set against a nature reserve and the River Brent, we have a remarkably rural space for an urban school. Education budgets are tight; and a temporary site is often afforded what is less than the bare minimum. Still, pushing against the bureaucracy, we have managed to build in a fully operational kitchen, with meals cooked on site, which will enable us to have family dining for students and teachers, and gastronomy lessons that explore everything from food nutrition to the ethical sourcing of food. Another difficult space to achieve in a temporary site is a science laboratory; but, again, understanding that as key to achieving our mission, we have squeezed money out of our temporary site budget to manage that as well. It’s not all been fighting over our budget needs though. Recently we had the fun of choosing our House names, all after Ealing notables: Byron, for Lady Byron, Lord Byron’s widow and founder of Ealing Grove School; Perceval, for Prime Minster Spencer Perceval (18091812); Yeats, for William Butler Yeats, who lived in Ealing during his school years; and Chambers, for Dorothea Chambers, multipletime Wimbledon Ladies Singles champion in the early 20th century.

Nature’s Tiny Miracle: Bee by Britta Teckentrup (Little Tiger)
This gorgeous debut by picture book author and illustrator Fiona Woodcock weaves in a lovely theme of friendship and compromise. Young Heidi loves to play hide and seek and is the mistress of disguise much to the annoyance of her friends. So when she throws a party and decides on the usual party game, her pals search high and low but she’s so good at hiding they continue the party without her making Heidi realise that it’s time to include the games all her friends like to play.
Great for tackling emotions, the Everybody Feels series explore different feelings children may be experiencing in an approachable and relatable way. In Everybody Feels…Sad! the book is divided into two separate stories told from the child’s point of view. One features a girl called Chloe who has lost her toy elephant and the other is about a young boy called Omar whose cat has to be put to sleep. Both stories look at why the characters are sad and how that sadness is resolved (Chloe’s pet is found, Omar gets two kittens), but it also gives brilliant practical advice for parents on how to work through sadness, whatever the situation. This includes tips on discussion points, using art and roleplay to help facilitate their emotions. With warm illustrations that bring to life very real circumstances this is a must for helping children navigate the ups and downs in life.
Another stunning book by the uber talented Britta Teckentrup. A joy to read on so many levels it charts the amazing work of the not so humble bee. With ever decreasing numbers, this book is a stark reminder of the vital work they do as we follow our bee from flower to flower. Teckentrup’s work is a visual delight and every page features a cut out where you can peep through and see our bee in action.
Beautifully illustrated by Woodcock who has worked on animated films, commercials, and West End shows, her whimsical style still packs a punch whilst subtly celebrating the skills that all children possess.
The series also includes feeling scared, happy, and angry.

Coupled with her intricate collage work the tale is told through rhyme with the closing sentences summing the whole book up nicely: “As the bees fly on through buds and burrs, a tiny miracle occurs. For every plant and flower you see was given life by one small bee.”

JUNIOR Alpha, Bravo Charlie: The Complete Book of Nautical Codes by Sara Gillingham (Phaidon) Nonfiction topics are going through a much-needed resurgence and this visually arresting reference book takes the subject of nautical codes to a whole new level and brings them to life. Any child with a love of boats will find this hugely fascinating as it details the phonetic alphabet, morse code, flag meaning, semaphore facts about a variety of boats. I’m not sure how handy it would be knowing the ‘Keep clear of me: I am engaged in trawling’ flag will be on a day trip down the Thames, but there is plenty of flags which could be made on a rainy day to reenact any given circumstance. One for geeky girls and boys who loves facts and hand signals.

Everyone can relate to writing a story and not finishing it – imagine if that story held the clues to a mystery. That’s the premise of this gripping drama written by the award-winning Michelle Harrison. When Alice goes missing, it’s down to her brother Midge to find her. But where to begin? When he discovers a novel she hadn’t completed, The Museum of Unfinished Tales, it’s down to him to uncover the clues and track her whereabouts. The problem is the villains in her tale have come to life and are loose in the town. Can Midge and his friends Gypsy and Piper (also characters from the story) find Alice before it’s too late?
For those young adults who are socially aware and politically-minded this collaboration between Amnesty International and Walker will be just the ticket. Written by twenty-five celebrated authors and illustrators including Neil Gaiman, Matt Haig, Sarah Crossan, Chris Riddell and Frances Hardinge, this collection of stories and poems keeps alive the debate around human rights.
This is a genuinely, page turning read. Harrison keeps the story moving on at a fast pace, there’s also enough intrigue and suspense by the bucket load. Plus, there’s enough magic realism to add another layer of interest. A cracking read.
Despite the fact that many rights and freedoms have been won, there’s still a long way to go and this book reminds of that fact. Told with a mix of humour, sadness and truth, they all have a powerful and poignant theme running through them as they explore topics such as execution, war and people who are marginalised in society. An truly thought-provoking read for teens and adults alike. All royalties go to Amnesty International and you can follow the debate on #hereIstand
