e’ve all made it to Autumn, without too much collateral damage, I hope. It’s not every day that images from a world-renowned photographer grace our pages, but we are forever thankful to Misan Harriman for sharing an image he shot for Vogue’s historic BLM issue. Why relevant for City Kids? Well Lavinya Stennett is trying to change the way our children’s history curriculum is taught. Head to p27 to read her mission. In our Education Special we’ve Lockdown Lessons, some amazing reads and some advice for parents and children trying to adapt to school and life in general from Dr Kathy Weston. We’ve one mother’s account of organising a child-friendly Black Lives Matter protest and Bev Turner acknowledges the juggling act parents face and are still facing as we try to work at home and adjust to a different world. Elsewhere, we round up places to go in town which are now open as well as some great interiors and fashion finds. And a fanfare please for our very own Jo Pratt whose latest publication The Flexible Family Cookbook is featured on p.18. Until our next issue, stay glued to www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk as well as @citykidsmagazine on Instagram and Facebook for the latest news, views, parenting nuggets and fun stuff.

The Great 2020
STAYCAY
This year, us Brits have rediscovered all that our varied nation has to offer by enjoying a staycation. Photo: Benjamin Elliott - Unsplash
W
hen the world locked down and 2020 properly went rogue, we, for the most part, went nowhere. Stay at home, for the entire year? Well yes, and it might just be one of the best silver linings of this whole heartbreaking episode. We have given the environment longedfor breathing space, we have freed up our skies, cleaned up the air and found solace in nature. We have pared back our lives and (re)connected with the people and spaces around us. It’s been an education, an alternative to the actual education our children didn’t receive! London, as always with our mighty capital, has thrown up some unexpected gems. The centre of town has been empty and while it might be getting busier, there is still space to admire the spectacular architecture by bike, taking in three palaces within the same number of miles. Having gazed longingly at the river for years, our family finally took the plunge and we have roamed our stretch by kayak, being firm fans of an A to B adventure. Our city is close to the cosmopolitan dream, an exciting cultural junction of heterogeneous ideas. For purists, a staycation is a holiday at home, eschewing the daily routine for day trips and backyard discoveries. At least, that is the American version. For once, us Brits have taken it further and understand the term as a holiday that doesn’t include going abroad. And if you’re going to stay put in any country, well, Britain has it 10 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
SOPHIE CLOWES shares her findings. all: history, culture, art, cities, mountains, countryside and miles of coastline. Ours is a country of variety: topography, food, architecture, seasons, flora and fauna, and even our stalwart joker, the weather. Your newly acquired dog is welcome: yes, hurrah for clichés, particularly lockdown bumps and puppies! The staycation has impressive environmental credentials, no language barrier, requires no passport (dog or human), saves you from extreme sunburn, mosquito bites and insects the size of light aircraft, and costs whatever you think is good value. Hotels, rental properties or a tent (note that wild camping is only permitted in Scotland): once you have wrapped your head around the lack of foreignness, welcome to vacay fun. Where to go? If it’s an overnight stay seek out satellite spots not far away: Brighton, Whitstable, the Cotswolds, even the Isle of Wight. If time is your friend, just pin the tail on the cartographic donkey or head to the compass points of Scotland (woo, a border crossing!), Northumberland or the Lake District; Devon and Cornwall; Norfolk or Suffolk; and Pembrokeshire. I make no apology for the coastal theme, it’s where it’s at. Kate Hiscox of @wearsmymoney headed both south to Devon and north to Northumberland in the summer, posting strong castle and beach content on the ‘gram. “For us we need good walks, ideally with a snack situation at the end of it, interesting places to visit - we love
FEATURE history so the 70+ castles in Northumberland were perfect - beaches that are not too busy and at least two good pubs to have lunch at.” This, from someone who works in the music and fashion industries, is how to rock and roll in 2020. The joy of a staycation is the lack of pressure, explains Caitlin Ramsdale of Kid & Coe. “They are less about accomplishment and more about starting to build a story for your family in that location, with the idea that each time you go back, you might uncover a deeper layer.” Ramsdale feels the deep rooted element of a staycation: “They are about visiting friends, connecting with other families, planting a seed for the future by finding a place you can visit every year, or investing in a community that you can grow into.” For the Curtis-Freud clan this sweet spot is in Suffolk, and if it’s good enough for the king and queen of feel-good movies and founders of Comic Relief, and their feminist-activist-author daughter Scarlett, it’s a pretty safe bet that it’s a place to fall in love with. Actually. Sticking with east, the Norfolk coast at Holkham is about as big and sandy as you can get. If you’ve read Anne Glenconner’s astoundingly bonkers book Lady in Waiting, you will know that there are London buses buried in the dunes. If you haven’t, pack it in your bag and enjoy a vicarious wild journey of a different sort while holidaying there. If you have an urge to go west and break for another border, head for Pembrokeshire with its untamed coastline of extraordinary beauty. The high rainfall puts off some but if you’re getting in the sea, you’ll be wet anyway. It’s the south that has many people’s hearts, specifically Cornwall.
When planning a staycation it’s important to list what matters to you. For this family, there has to be the sea or a big lake or river to swim in, an activity – surfing or wild swimming, long blustery walks – and a house that is as comfortable as our own, preferably more so, that must include a bad-ass shower, super comfy beds and space to be with friends. And wifi is a must. A staycation is also the perfect snooping opportunity, seeking out interiors inspo that you can try and test. Emily Wheeler, interiors stylist and founder of community project Furnishing Futures, encourages us to find happiness in properties with sustainability credentials and a strong connection with the outside. The Cornish coast is as varied as it is long and each family has their own allegiance to a certain point along it. The north is famed for its surfing. Head to the family-friendly beaches of Polzeath or Watergate Bay, both of which have contemporary hotels with attached self-catering accommodation. The pretty bays and headlands down the winding roads of the Roseland Peninsular are perfect for smaller children and accompanying grandparents, too. Others fall in love with the deep south: St Ives, Penzance and The Minack Theatre being arty honey pots. When the sun shines, the kernowfornia hashtags are justified. Future certainties are possible, even in the shifting sands of our times. The Thames will continue to grace us with her twice-daily rise and fall, our exceptional coastline will exert its trans-generational pull and the miles and miles of footpaths will still be there, watching the seasons change. Go and book for next year. And don’t forget the extra bed for the baby or puppy!

LEARNING FROM
LOCKDOWN
R
esearch from the Institute for Fiscal Studies has confirmed what we already knew: lockdown was a slamdown for working women. For every three uninterrupted paid hours worked by men, we managed one. But even that seems unlikely – a whole hour uninterrupted by refereeing a sibling fight, rustling up lunch or hanging out a wash?! Impossible. Cast your mind back to the 22nd March when Boris Johnson gravely announced that we must stay at home to stay alive. It was surreal and slightly scary: was this virus hanging about in the air, waiting to pounce outside Co-op? Were we about to be hit by a ‘Day of The Triffids’ style apocalypse that would leave our children free to raise each other on a diet of Wotsits and Fortnite? (They wish). But there was also the thrill of being forced to slow-down. And boy, did we need to… ‘I’m sorry, Mr Prime Minister, did you just say that I can’t do the school run twice a day? Did you say that I can’t sit on sweltering poolside balconies four times a week? Are you absolutely sure that I don’t have to work as well as overseeing multiple playdates, netball matches, birthday parties and afterschool-clubs whilst also mentally juggling who needs a snack, are gym kits packed and have I left a child at a bus stop somewhere? Oh, if you insist PM!... Of course, at that point the grip of homeschooling, the anxiety of earning a living and the sheer bloody exasperation of being locked up with only our families for three months had not yet hit. That tsunami was around the corner along with unavailable shopping deliveries, filthy houses and the genuine stress that our elderly loved ones might become ill – or die. What looked like a little staycation morphed into a coachtrip into the bowels of hell, especially for mothers. This has been unlike any event in modern times and as we tentatively unfurl back into the real world, we parents are left wondering what we learnt: good and bad. I confirmed my 16 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
own suspicion that alcohol at 6pm certainly does take the edge of a tough day (in the long run, my liver may not agree) and I discovered that I had been flittering away hundreds of pounds on coffees, snacks and eating-out that I really didn’t need. I now have a thermos and a willingness to make my sandwiches in the morning. I will try to maintain that frugality. Wish me luck. The relationship between me, my partner and my three children wholeheartedly benefitted from enforced confinement. Disagreements could be truly settled, not ignored as one of us ran out of the door to an appointment. Talking over family meals at least twice a day engendered many laughs and a much greater willingness to listen to each other. Kids need our time. And as hard as that is to accept when we are dashing about, it is the one single ingredient which helps our offspring grow healthy and happy. And let’s be honest, ladies, if it wasn’t for the technology nannies (Playstation, iPads, TV, mobile phones), we wouldn’t have made it
And shall we talk about housework? I didn’t need a gym during lockdown as I took on the 1950’s housewife training regime of laundry, gardening, hoovering, mopping and bed-making; flopping into bed exhausted (and a bit pissed) every single night feeling as though I’d run the two bridges. The same Fiscal Institute study discovered that mums did 1.7 more hours of housework per day than dads. And even in households where dad was furloughed and mum carried on working, both parents did the same housework! This is not ok. But it’s a complicated psychological and emotional battle in many houses where we women want it to look ‘nice’ while blokes often shrug that it’s ‘fine’ and ask if it really matters if the floor is mopped. I’m dealing in stereotypes here but that’s a stereotype for a reason… My own teenage son was recruited into the cleaning schedule at our house and when asked to clean the bath looked utterly bemused: “Why would you do that? You’re just going to put water in it.” So, as we come up for air and loosen the seals on our family units, I for one, will endeavour to make sure that the bonds which grew from each other’s company don’t fray. If the PM won’t insist on family time, we mothers will have to. And hopefully dads will be on board – with a willingness to share the load.
‘‘

through the day. Most kids gorged on screens and yet, balanced by daily fresh air and home cooked meals thanks to a lack of eating out, they appear largely unharmed.

• Heat the oil in a heavy-based saucepan or casserole dish. • Add the onion and cook for 5 minutes or until softened and starting to turn golden. • Add the garlic and cook for a further minute before stirring in the sugar, chipotle paste, vinegar, tomatoes, 200ml/7fl oz/ scant 1 cup water and the black beans. Mix everything together and bring to a simmer. • Add the chicken to the pan, spooning over the sauce to cover. • Cover with a lid and simmer gently for 30 minutes until the chicken is cooked and the sauce thickened. • Meanwhile, make the salsa by mixing everything together in a serving bowl and seasoning with salt and pepper. • Once cooked, remove the chicken from the pan and sit on a plate or board. FLEXIBLE... PESCATARIAN A delicious alternative to using chicken is to swap it for some chunky white fish such as cod, pollock or haddock. Let the tomato and black bean sauce cook alone for 20 minutes then add 400g/14 oz fish fillets to the pan. Spoon over the sauce, cover with a lid and cook for 10 minutes. Break the fish into flakes in the pan and serve as above.
GET AHEAD Once made, the chicken can sit in the fridge for 3–4 days and heated through when needed. It can also easily be doubled up so you can freeze half for another time. The Flexible Family Cookbook by Jo Pratt, £20 Frances Lincoln. Photography Malou Burger

S
itting in our flat, in a terrace on the edge of Kilburn, with our baby and our three-yearold, we were trying to figure out what to do. Like many people, we’d been staring at our phones, watching the Black Lives Matter protests in America, watching events escalate and spill over into the rest of the world, and our own lives. We were trying to work out how we could get to the protests that were happening in the middle of the city. Protests and marches are a type of activism that I truly believe in. But in lockdown it was different. We didn’t feel like we could get to the protests safely, and once we were there, we weren’t sure we would be able to keep ourselves and our children at a safe distance. It felt wrong to go; it felt wrong to stay at home. Our friends Taio and Phoebe were in the same boat, with two kids the same age. A throwaway WhatsApp suggestion by Phoebe on Wednesday night, to go to our local park together with our placards and hold our own family protest, grew by Thursday morning into the idea of organising a protest for children, families and whoever else wanted to come. Taio volunteered to speak at the start of the protest, and my partner made us a flyer which gave the event a sudden sense of legitimacy. By that evening we were ready to send it out to friends and to post it on social media. We didn’t set up a specific page for the event and had no names or contact details on the flyer - so once we’d posted it, we had no idea who or how many people would attend. By Friday my two biggest fears were these: what if no-one comes? What if everyone comes?
teachers from the school where I work, black, white, mixed heritage. By the time Taio stood on a rock and called everyone to attention, there were around 250 people gathered (at a distance) holding placards and signs, wrapped up in raincoats or with umbrellas. Taio read from James Baldwin and spoke about the specific fears black parents have for their children. He listed the statistics of the inequalities black people suffer in the UK’s justice system. He spoke about his experience of being black and a father, and his own fears. And then we marched. As we marched, social distancing meant that we formed a ring around the whole park, marching and chanting together. (Our daughter Joni announced she didn’t like all this shouting and was worried we’d wake people who were sleeping!) Some teenagers walking through the park to buy Lucozade stopped and joined us, as did some people doing exercise. LESSONS
2020 has thrown up many challenges, not-least for education providers. Here some school heads and business owners tell us what they have learned in lockdown.
LIZ MCLAUGHLIN, HEAD OF FALCONS PRE-PREP
ELIZABETH TWEEDALE, CEO AND FOUNDER, CYPHER
21st Century education took a giant leap forward this year with lockdown putting to the test everything I have studied, experienced, and learned about Primary School education. As we switched to a brand-new model of teaching in a matter of days, my message to my staff and parents was to first and foremost, focus on the boys’ wellbeing. It was essential that we looked out for worrying signs as the boys adapted to a new way of life because without a healthy mindset, we knew learning would take a back seat. I was extremely impressed at how fast my staff learned a brand-new way of teaching in a matter of days and constantly stayed one step ahead of requirements. Our job was two-fold: to support the boys and the parents who were thrown into a new profession as teachers to their children. Our teachers often found their Zoom meetings with the boys turned into support meetings for the parents and this was the key ingredient to helping our boys continue to learn and thrive at home. I believe we truly rose to the challenge and our boys and parents became experts of learning from their living rooms, inviting their teachers in via a computer, and making connections with their friends over virtual playdates. I believe we have come out stronger as a community and as a school. Our teaching methods exceeded my expectations and our data shows that our boys not only learned while at home but excelled. Are we ready for the next lockdown? I would say that our learning curve was practically vertical, but we got there, and we are now able to offer a truly exceptional hybrid model of education for our boys, come what may.
We, at Cypher, dramatically changed the way we work over the lockdown period. Our first thoughts were with the children. We were determined that this pandemic, scary enough on its own, would not stop kids being inspired and optimistic about their future. We made the decision to switch all our camps to Live Online and cut the camp down to 90-minutes. We committed to a teacher being present and visible throughout all the sessions, kept class sizes small, four to six students, and made four sessions a day to fit with parents’ daily schedules. We have been thrilled to see how enthusiastic our online learners have been. The technological advancements made by our students have been unprecedented, and unlike anything we’ve seen before. Looking ahead to the new normal, Live OnLine will remain part of our camps. Offering our camps online has been hugely beneficial for many students, eliminating any geographical barriers and extending our reach way beyond London with children attending from France, Portugal, Ireland, UAE, the Philippines and the USA. It has also allowed us to open our doors even more widely, running our free Cypher Starters sessions every Thursday afternoon to encourage a wider interest in learning to code and introduce a broad range of children to computational thinking.
SARAH RAFFRAY, HEAD OF ST AUGUSTINE’S PRIORY St Augustine’s Priory, Catholic independent day school in Ealing, rose to the challenge of Lockdown. Determined that their girls would not be disadvantaged during this time of uncertainty, staff embarked on a thoroughly considered and well-worked out system of remote learning. Classroom technology came into its own as classes continued in all subjects across the curriculum each day, from Reception to Year 13, with children participating virtually from home as teachers taught classes live, enabling children and teachers to communicate as a group and as individuals. Although not present on site, all classes took place, from English to PE, from the Sciences to Art to Music, with assignments set and marked in all subjects. After lockdown ended and Reception, Years 1 and 6 re-entered school, St Augustine’s Priory developed their system of remote learning into a successful programme of blended learning. Pupils divided into their bubbles and from their classrooms joined together with classmates who remained at home and continued to study all the subjects they would normally have studied together in class. Year 1 even welcomed classmates from Japan and South Africa! Learning did not stop with the result that education thrived. So successful was the programme at this school that St Augustine’s was in a position to make their blended learning skills available for the use of other schools, an initiative which was taken up wholeheartedly by local schools. St Augustine’s Priory’s programme did not end with lessons – Sports Day, the Summer Concert and their Sports Awards Evening also took place along with socially distanced gatherings with each year group marking the end of the academic year. Lessons in Lockdown proved that St Augustine’s Priory’s teachers and pupils adapt and thrive - ready to learn new skills and relish new challenges. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 23

GILES ENTWISLE, INCOMING HEAD OF DURSTON HOUSE Quality teaching first and embracing change has been at the forefront of every school I have worked at and has been a key ingredient in running a really good school. We encourage pupils to take risks, make mistakes and ideally, learn from them. Never has this been more true since the outbreak of COVID-19 and the closing of schools in March. There have been many lessons learnt over the past months. First and foremost is that outstanding teachers still make the difference. They adapt, learn, create and co-operate in ways which have, at times, been breath-taking. Now, I have the honour and privilege of leading one of West London’s top Prep Schools. Durston has a rich and distinguished history in preparing boys for the very best public schools both in and beyond London. A commitment to innovate, nurture and provide boys from four years old with the very best pastoral, academic and co-curricular provision in and well beyond the classroom is what life is all about at Durston. Character, Curiosity and Capability. I realise we will not see a return to complete normality by any means in September. We will need to keep learning and developing the provision for our pupils and staff. We will need to adapt to changing circumstances energetically and with meticulous planning. There is at Durston House, a collective determination to take all we have learned from this dangerous and at times devastating disease. We learn from the opportunities given to us, with a commitment and determination for our school and community to become the very best versions of themselves. I have no doubt that Durston House will continue to provide the highest quality education and finest pastoral care. As I become more acquainted with the school, its ethos and culture, I see how much staff here care about who our pupils become. At Durston House there is an understanding in the transformative power of education. In the context of the 21st Century, it will be our pupils’ personal qualities and values, not just exam results, that will set them apart. It is critical to give young people the skills, confidence and capabilities to navigate their own paths through life – along with the unshakeable sense of self they need to influence the world around them for the better. I cannot think of a better place to spend my time in realising this vision, and I feel a palpable sense of excitement of things to come at Durston House. 24 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

EDUCATING
WHEN YOUR CHILD CAN’T BE IN SCHOOL The new LIL Online programme launched this autumn allows home-schooled students and those unable to attend school in person to pursue a complete, structured curriculum live and online.
D
o you have a child or children unwilling or unable to attend school in person? Perhaps you live far away from London and are seeking a quality international education not available nearby. Maybe you’re moving between global work assignments or have chosen home-schooling. Whatever the reason, the new LIL Online programme from Lycée International de Londres Winston Churchill offers a way to attend school remotely that is as rigorous and engaging as being physically present. The success of the school’s ongoing education and pastoral care during the Covid-19 pandemic demonstrated the agility and resourcefulness of its expert teaching staff, the power of its technological foundation, and its smart embrace of digital culture. It was from this experiment that LIL Online was born. The comprehensive bilingual curriculum, offered by videoconferencing and live online classes, is specifically designed for students and families seeking a more structured and communal learning experience from home. It’s also a boon to families transitioning between countries, who can now be a part of the Lycée Churchill community before or after they live in London. Remote students will get the chance to join the school’s vibrant and international community at any time during the year, becoming part of interactive classrooms “in the cloud”, making new friends, and enjoying the virtual presence of classmates and teachers. For those who can’t attend school in person, it’s the closest thing to being there. Students start classes at 8:30am sharp and remain engaged until the mid-afternoon, with breaks and a lunch hour. The classes are taught interactively over a web video connection, though students are also assigned homework and other autonomous activities. The timetable and structure reinforce a sense of engagement and participation, as well as providing crucial discipline in the homeschooled environment. Your child is no longer left alone to fill out workbooks or to communicate with distant teachers via email; rather, he or she belongs to a close-knit group of students learning together and taking their place as young citizens of the 21st century. For families who have chosen home-schooling, LIL Online offers an enhanced educational experience where instruction is enlivened by highly trained and emotionally supportive teachers and staff following rigorous international standards. Equally important, the programme includes vital services and other components of school life that are difficult to replicate at home: extensive wellbeing

support, career and university counselling, social interaction, and a deep sense of community and shared experience — even including online school assemblies, birthday parties, and events for parents. Located on a leafy 5-acre campus in Wembley, Lycée Churchill is an independent, co-ed school offering a full French-English bilingual education to 800 pupils aged 3 to 18. In the secondary section, families can choose either a bilingual French programme fully accredited by the French Ministry of Education that leads to the baccalauréat examinations, or an English-oriented track blending the French and English educational models and leading to the globally-recognised International Baccalaureate Diploma. The school was rated “Outstanding” for Sixth Form and for personal development, behaviour, and welfare by Ofsted in 2019. It is characterised by diversity, with teachers and staff of 29 different nationalities, and is built on a modern educational ethos that blends traditional disciplines with initiative, exploration, critical thinking, teamwork, and individual development. LIL Online also affords students the chance to expand their horizons through tutoring and specialist classes in fields such as philosophy, maths, physics, computer coding, and modern and classic languages, including Chinese. This is truly the education of the future. TACKLING RACISM IN THE CURRICULUM
Following the murder of George Floyd, the world seemed to finally take notice of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Demonstrations across the globe gave rise to long-overdue conversations about race and racial history, not least in the UK, where cities have prospered on the foundations of the slave trade. That history is rarely told in detail at school. Social enterprise, The Black Curriculum, aims to revolutionise the history syllabus in this country for eight to 16 year olds. Its CEO, LAVINYA STENNETT, explains.
O
ur education system in the UK has failed many young people. Currently, students across the UK are not being taught Black British history consistently as part of the national curriculum in a committed manner, despite numerous findings demonstrating its importance. The latest Home Office figures show that in 2017/18, there were 94,098 hate crime offences recorded by the police in England and Wales, 76% of which were racially aggravated. The reality of racism operates in many ways, particularly through the lack of education and understanding of Black British history. The Macpherson Report produced 20 years ago, showed that cultural diversity within the curriculum is one of the ways to prevent racism. Similarly, The Windrush Review recommended that colonial and migration history should be taught. So why are we still here today? The outcomes of young people in the UK are affected by the implicit racial bias within the curriculum. When young people are not taught their history within Britain, their sense of identity and belonging is negatively impacted and social relations, hindered. A 2007 report on the over-representation of young Black people in the criminal justice system demonstrated the link between
these shortcomings in the curriculum as causing underachievement and disaffection. A proposed remedy suggested that the ‘government should ensure history lessons are relevant to all young people in Britain’. Here, we recognise that Black history is British history and therefore aim to reflect this in our work. Currently, the national curriculum and exam board specifications are limited in providing Black British history. Furthermore, Black history is not mandatory in schools which follow their own curriculum. Without the resources, time and understanding, we are still going to face the same problems of historical inaccuracies, bias and a lack of enthusiasm in teaching and delivery. In the same manner, we can not simply rely on parents and carers to provide this material to young people. Black British history is not merely a theme for October, but started hundreds of years before Windrush and pre-dates European colonial enslavement. Our work aims to address and overcome these limitations by seeking to provide a contextual, globalised history that roots the Black British experience in histories of movement and migration - 365 days a year. We want to help prepare students to

become fully rounded citizens and ready for an increasingly globalised world. Our curriculum is grounded in the arts for young people to engage with history imaginatively, encouraging student satisfaction and critical thinking skills. Through our holistic approach we aim to remedy a wider systemic issue.
Lavinya is a historian, writer and recent FirstClass graduate from SOAS. The vision to create The Black Curriculum came from firsthand experiences in British formal education, where she witnessed the effects of systemic disenfranchisement through the exclusion of Black pupils and Black British history. Young people learning general ‘Black history’ in the lone month of October was simply, not good enough. During her study abroad in Aotearoa, she was interested in the way Indigenous and colonial history was a part of the everyday and made accessible to everyone at all ages. She is determined to challenge the Eurocentricity of the school curriculum at a nationwide level. Lavinya believes in the power of education, and the arts to ultimately transform the lives of people theblackcurriculum.com CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 27

This joyful book encourages youngsters to take action when it comes to the future of the planet. It follows children from around the world who join forces (with a bit of help from Greta Thunberg) and have the same goal, whether that is recycling, using less fuel, walking more, buying less plastic - it all helps. The illustrations are colourful and upbeat, but that doesn’t take away from the seriousness of the message with the last line reaffirming how children can play their part, ‘Though we might be small in a world that is wide, together we swell until we turn the tide’.

Cerrie Burnell ventures away from fiction with this fascinating book which details 34 disabled artists, thinkers, athletes and activists from past and present. Covering a range of conditions including mental health and hidden disabilities (such as epilepsy) we learn about how they reached the top despite the challenges they faced. Everyone from Freda Kahlo to Lady Gaga (who is in constant pain with fibromyalgia) features with Cerrie talking about her own experiences growing up with one hand and how it didn’t stop her from achieving her dreams. An inspirational read.

SLEEP
Sleep expert, ROSEY DAVIDSON offers advice on how to get back to normal bedtimes after an extraordinary year.
2020
has certainly been a year of challenges for most families. COVID-19 has had a huge impact on the sleep of our nation. Children are no exception. More screen time screen time, later bedtimes, increased anxiety, time away from friends and normal support networks… the list goes on. Research tells us that during the pandemic there has been a significant… shift in bedtimes and morning wake times – 70% of children under 16 are going to bed later (Journal of Child Psychology and Psychiatry, ref: Sleep Council). The result of this is that it is harder than ever to transition to a ‘normal’ routine at the start of the school year. Screen time has played such a big role in home schooling, but this heavy reliance on technology can have a devastating effect on sleep. Lots of exposure to blue and white light from devices can affect our drive to sleep and our production of melatonin (our sleep hormone). Essentially this means, the more screen time we have, the less sleepy we feel! While it is quite normal for children to go to bed a little later during summer holidays, for many parents that bedtime/wake time has shifted far further than usual. Fear not though, there are positive steps that we can take to make the transition back to school a little easier…
My top tips to improving sleep habits:
1 2 3 4 5 6
Make sure that you and your child get exposure to morning light – this is really valuable for our internal body clocks. Get outside for some fresh air early in the day. Cut screen time before bed – 1-2 hours of screen free time will really help you and your little ones to switch off. If your child uses a reading light in bed opt for an amber light – this is far less disruptive that blue/white lights. Ideally try to keep homework and other activities out of the bedroom – reserve it for sleeping only if possible. If not then perhaps put a screen across the room to cover the desk/ workspace at night. This is important for your child to learn to switch off. Stick to a calm, consistent bedtime routine. Bath, story/or chat, cuddle and lights out. Children thrive on having clear boundaries. If your child is resisting bedtime I really like to create a bedtime poster together – detailing all of the steps towards bedtime and teaching them about the positive benefits of sleep to their bodies. If your child is anxious about returning to school and struggling to sleep, some simple mindfulness techniques can be helpful. Deep breath in and out, focusing on the breath and movement of the tummy can really help.
Prioritising your sleep and that of your child’s is not decadent. It will improve concentration, mood, support immune system, help maintain a healthy weight and more. Most of all, a well-rested child is a child ready to learn and embrace the new normal.

SCHOOL RETURN ANXIETY Butterflies at the start of the new school year are normal, but after the year we’ve had, Dr Kathy Weston offers some extra comfort for the school return. by DR KATHY WESTON
I
t can be normal for parents, even in ‘normal’ times to worry about the new school year. Whether your child heads off to nursery, primary or transitions to senior or secondary school, parents will worry. Often those worries centre on the administrative burden that comes with a school start and on the ‘unknowns’ that come with a child joining a new class or school setting. What is striking is that children very often possess a different set of worries to their parents. Parental worry typically centres around children or young people’s ability to socialise, connect with others, make friends and the extent to which their child’s physical and mental health needs might be met over the next academic year. Children tend to be very practical when it comes to worrying. How will I get to school? What will the bus be like? Will I get lost? Who will pick me up? Who will be at home when I get back? It is not uncommon for children to be concerned about how they might navigate around the school building,

they have to remember. Coupled with these ‘normal worries’ that manifest in ‘normal times’, some children may experience anticipatory anxiety related to COVID-19. Is the classroom different? Can I play with my friends? Will I be able to play the same games? Some, but not all children, will worry on a larger scale about virus transmission and carry some anxiety left over from the experience of lockdown. The good news is that parents play a powerful role when it comes to both alleviating anxiety in children and modelling a positive and resilient approach that can help children get school-ready. As a family, it is a useful exercise to reflect back on the experience of lockdown and to extract positives associated with the experience. Where were the silver linings? What did we learn about ourselves and others? Celebrate

to see themselves as already resilient. This kind of reflection breeds resilience. A second part of being school-ready is about airing all and any worries in a nice open chat with your child. Together, seek out solutions, ideas and thoughts that can alleviate or cancel a particular worry. Perhaps your child is worried about walking alone to school. What can we do about that? Coach them rather than provide solutions yourself. Model a proactive and positive approach and importantly, convey a sense of excitement and joy that your child is moving up a year in school, growing and developing. What are they excited about and looking forward to? In terms of the dreaded virus, try and focus your child’s attention on life’s ‘controllables’; what your child can do or influence in relation to it. Underline the practical steps that they can take to stay healthy, emphasise the proactive work schools are doing in anticipation of school return and celebrate the innovation that is taking place across the scientific world, that will enable us, at some point to return to life, unmasked. In the current climate, it can easy to forget the central role of school; as places of learning. It is important that parents continue to reiterate to their offspring, that we go to school to work hard and to learn and that is it important to try our best. Let’s stay aspirational, whilst making sure they stay calm, focused and positive.

EDUCATION NEWS KRIS SPENCER APPOINTED NEW HEAD
ACS STUDENTS HEAD TO TOP UNIS
Mr. Kris Spencer takes over the headship at St James Preparatory School this Autumn. He joins from Notting Hill Prep where he has served as Deputy Head. Previous experience also includes time as Assistant Head at Latymer Upper as well as roles at Westminster and St Paul’s Girls. Speaking about his appointment, Mr Spencer said: “From my time teaching, I have come to realise there are many ways to measure the quality of a school. I would always look to the warmth and sense of community; how much the pupils and the teaching staff want be there; how much they enjoy working with each other, and that very special buzz which some might call harmony, and others, flourishing. You feel this at St James in abundance, and see it in the way the staff, pupils and parents work together. I look forward with excitement to getting to know all the children and working with all the parents, staff and governors.”
Students at the ACS International Schools Hillingdon and Cobham have received outstanding International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme (DP) results, with an average point score of 34, equivalent to more than 3 A*s at A Level according to UCAS, and a pass rate of 94% and 93% respectively, well above the global average of 79%. Students will now go on to top universities including Oxford, Imperial, University College London, Warwick, York and Bath, to study subjects such as Law, Psychology, Biomedical Sciences, International Relations, Computing, Economics and Business and Film & TV Production.
NEW HEAD FOR DURSTON HOUSE Mr Giles Entwisle is the new head at Durston House, Ealing. For the last seven years he has been Headmaster of Bede’s Preparatory School in Eastbourne, the prep school of Bede’s senior school. Before that he was Deputy Head at Highfield School in Liphook, Hampshire, and Housemaster at Holmewood House in Tunbridge Wells. In total he has taught at five different prep schools, all of them with strong reputations and high standards of teaching and pastoral care. Giles began his career as a languages teacher, has an Honours degree in Modern European Studies from Loughborough University, and is married to Regina, a Spanish teacher. They have two children aged 19 and 15. At Bede’s, he has overseen a transformation of the school, including its envisioning, planning and overseeing a number of significant infrastructure projects, adding new sports facilities and revising and enhancing the curriculum and the school’s teaching and learning techniques.
ONLINE PILOT FOR ORLEY FARM Orley Farm School in Harrow is using all the experienced gained from remote learning to launch a pilot scheme called ‘Go’. It marries the best and most effective experiences from remote teaching with the best of traditional learning before lockdown. It begins with current Year 7 pupils who will shortly be receiving their own Microsoft Surface Go, with keyboard and scribe in order to build on their MS Team and One Note portfolios that they started last term. Headmaster, Tim Calvey said, “Recent events have simply confirmed to me the need for schools to be agile, flexible, adaptive and responsive if they are to harness the opportunities that are presenting themselves today in the middle of this storm, after all, we expect this in our day to day lessons!”

COOK
“
SCHOOL
This is one of the tastiest lasagnes I’ve ever eaten, and it was much easier than I expected to make.
Cook School’s mission is to get as many children as possible cooking healthy meals, understanding food and to give them the confidence to repeat what they learn at home.
Jack, aged 16, a Cook School student
Created by leading food educator and award-winning children’s cookbook author Amanda Grant, Cook School is a not for profit project offering accessible and affordable cookery lessons for students aged 5-19. We’ve selected their Veggie Lasagne which older kids could make for the whole family when they get home from school. SERVES 4 TAKES about 20 minutes to make and 35 minutes to cook
SKILLS grating, crushing garlic, measuring KIT sieve, 2 bowls, fork, garlic crusher, grater, ovenproof dish
INGREDIENTS 400g tinned chopped tomatoes 2 cloves garlic 3 tablespoons tomato puree 1 tablespoon olive oil 1 tablespoon dried oregano 1 teaspoon sugar 8 fresh basil leaves (optional) 50g Italian style hard cheese a little grating fresh nutmeg 250g low fat cream cheese or ricotta 200g baby spinach leaves 6 lasagne sheets 50g cheddar cheese
34 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
1. Turn the oven on to 190C. Make the tomato sauce - sieve the chopped tomatoes to remove the liquid. Tip the chopped tomato pulp (not the liquid) into a bowl and mash with a fork. Peel the garlic cloves and using a garlic crusher, crush the garlic and add to the tomatoes. 2. Add the tomato puree, oil, oregano and sugar to the tomatoes and mix really well. Using your fingers, tear the basil into tiny pieces and add to the tomatoes. Season with salt and pepper. 3. Make the filling - grate the Italian style hard cheese – hold the handle of the grater with one hand and then push the cheese downwards over the grater teeth. Always keep your fingers away from the teeth as they’re sharp. Put the grated cheese into another bowl. Grate a little fresh nutmeg into the cheese using the smallest holes on the grater. Add the cream cheese and a little freshly ground black pepper too and mix well.
4. Pick off any long stalks from the baby spinach leaves, tear the leaves in half and add the leaves to the bowl of cheese and mix together with a spoon. 5. Spoon half of the spinach mixture onto the base of an ovenproof dish. Lay lasagne sheets on top - you may need to break the lasagne sheets to fit the dish. Spoon half of the tomato sauce over the lasagne sheets. Repeat with the rest of the ricotta mixture, lasagne sheets and the rest of the tomato sauce. 6. Grate the cheddar using the large holes on the grater. Sprinkle the grated cheddar over the top of the dish. Using oven gloves, put into the oven and cook for 35 minutes, until golden.
TIP If you don’t have a garlic crusher, you can mash the garlic with the back of a spoon.

Peace of mind. The world can be a noisy place. That’s why children at St James practise ‘stillness’ and pause before and after every lesson. We see them calm down, refocus and head off to their next class buzzing with renewed energy. For parents, peace of mind comes from knowing your child will thrive academically and creatively in a warm, happy environment. Our pupils get great results. They just don’t get stressed about it. Please get in touch today to find out more about us or to arrange a visit.

As we all emerge from living very online lives, more businesses are returning to face to face offerings. We have updated as much as we can but things are changing daily. Please use our Listings Guide as the basis for your research. You will need to check with individual offerings as to their new timetables and openings. Some businesses will continue to offer online, some a mix, and some will be back with real time, in-person classes. Have fun!

WHO ARE? LIZZIE KING & LIZ MCCARTHY
PEOPLE
FOUNDERS OF LIZZIE LOVES NATURAL REMEDIES
Tell us one thing that people don’t know about you. I spent a few of years in my 20s, whilst working in film, volunteering as an OSCE election observer going to newly democratised countries, often post-conflict, like Bosnia, Uganda, Georgia and Montenegro to monitor their elections. Fascinating, thrilling and always an incredible insight into a country and its population living in rural areas and amongst the villages.
How did you meet? Liz was running a clean beauty company and I fell in love with her products and how she did things, we kept talking about future ideas… Tell us how Lizzie Loves Natural Remedies was born. The recipes were created as I researched natural ways of dealing with common, and often debilitating issues as I came across them: back to school sniffles, times of tough sleep and sick bugs. I couldn’t find what I wanted so I made them and shared the recipes, and the response was insane. Since then I realised there were so many more people out there who needed an easier, more portable way of creating them at home, so the formulations to stir into a drink were born. What have you made of the feedback? The messages have poured in, and I’ll never tire of reading them. It’s made me cry a couple of times – from mothers at their wits end from lack of sleep, (god I remember that fog) who’ve “tried everything” telling us their children have slept through for the first time with Be Sleepy, to emetophobics (fear of vomit) saying Be Settled has changed their life. And someone whose uncle with Alzheimer’s, who’d caused the family so much anxiety over lockdown with his fretful, wandering nights, is now resting and sleeping all night. Then winning awards I only read about before (Beauty Shortlist) and appearing in Grazia have been the pinch-me moments. How has 2020 been for you? Big highs, like launching our beloved products alongside the wild and woolly terrain of Covid, and the massive pressure points of home-schooling three children whilst running a business, and all five of us living together in lockdown in a small London house. Coronocoaster I think is the only way to describe it.
50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
What would you take to a desert island? Maldon salt, Firetree Chocolate and all the Vintner’s Daughter skincare.
How do you feel about lockdown now? We did it, and I couldn’t have imagined it possible, for nearly five months, if anyone had said what were in for in March. No one learnt Mandarin or wrote a novel, but we survived, we ate incredibly well – with lots of kits and at-homes as well as more time cooking up with fabulous veg deliveries etc. And we did things we never would have – like making post-work afternoon dashes to Wind in the Willows land for river swims and picnics. And new-found love and gratitude for neighbours we are going through it all with. Last book you read? Untamed by Glennon Doyle – indefatigable and sensational, a rocket launcher of a book. Where’s your favourite child-friendly place in London? Kew Gardens, a tonic for our urban lives - summer frolics, tree-top walks, the butterflies, and then one of the children’s very favourite thing – the magical Christmas lights and music show which gets better every year. And to eat – Sunday brunch at The Wolseley which is now a six year-old birthday tradition for everyone.
Signature dish? It always changes, at the moment a Persian-inspired chicken traybake with some summer vegetables, so rewarding for time in vs beauty and flavour out – find an example here: www.lizzie-loves.com/blogs/ blog/summer-chicken-traybake. It has been a constant on our weekly menu since then. Your proudest moment? Having my book published was a big one – childhood dream fulfilled. And launching a business in lockdown whilst home-schooling three kids. Now the products have smashed sales targets, been snapped up by dream retailers like Daylesford, won awards, and are making a difference to people’s lives, it’s been everything. What’s next for Lizzie Loves Natural Remedies? We’ve got exciting things coming up with new partners, new products, as well as different formats as we’ve heard what people want more of. We’re not standing still and as a small business we take on board what our customers want and keep heading in that direction. We love working on a business that makes a difference and helps people stay well and live life to the max, so we are always working to improve what we offer and who knows about it. Keep smiling and stay well.
