I
started working on City Kids Magazine three years ago, researching classes, activities and events so that you didn’t have to – aiming to provide a little bit of inspiration when all your ideas have run out. But despite how much I love this job, I admit to needing the occasional kick up the backside to keep going, and a reminder of how lucky I am. I’m only human after all. One woman who I can thank for kick-starting my motivation as we career towards winter is Jo TutchenerSharp. The brain haemorrhage survivor and creator of new brand Scamp and Dude tells her story on p14, and it will inspire you. Tissues at the ready, people, especially if you’re even the slightest bit hormonal.

BEVERLEY TURNER
FEAR More women are more frightened of giving birth than ever before in the history of humanity - fact. Recent surveys suggest that one in four first time mums, and one in three second timers, are terrified of what should be the best day of their lives. This is no surprise to those of us who work in the birth community. A global pandemic of fear has subsumed what must always have been a healthy trepidation towards bringing a new life into the world. It’s a massive responsibility and the sheer physics of getting “that out of that” seems insane, despite the fact that human beings (as we know them) have been managing to reproduce for 200,000 years.
Seek out the best medical support you can afford to ensure continuity-of-care in your pregnancy and labour. A known midwife has been proven to ease every pregnant woman’s fears. Work through your feelings with a hypnobirthing coach, who can help you to minimise their impact. And join an ante-natal course that will empower you with knowledge and positivity, along with other women going through the same feelings.
More women are more frightened of giving birth than ever before in the history of humanity
It’s ironic of course that, as birth has become more medicalised, with the intention of making the process safer, it has also become more frightening. This was never the aim of medical professionals (unless you live in Brazil where common tales of women being bullied in labour, and enforced caesareans will stop you in your tracks). But a consequence of hospitalising such a large majority of births is that it has become shut away; sanitised and kept out of the sight of young women.
When other women launch into terrifying tales of awful births, politely state that it’s not helpful for you to hear that with labour around the corner and change the subject. Or, put your fingers in your ears and shout, “La! La! La! I’m not listening to your awful story, you psychotic torturer!” The approach you choose will largely depend on how well you know this person, and whether you intend to remain friends.
If you think you may be suffering from Tokophobia – a genuine, debilitating fear of labour, talk to your midwife.
As with everything in life, the unknown is eminently more frightening than the real. Instead, we have our pick of dramatic, media-based births that allow directors to use their ‘thingsare-going-wrong’ music, and labour is used to signpost pain, terror, blood and near (or in some particularly disturbing scenes) actual death. It really is no wonder that more and more women are spending 40 weeks of pregnancy with their legs crossed wondering how the hell they are going to survive that shit. It takes a fierce mentality to keep those images from seeping into your mind and locking your cervix perfectly shut. So don’t think you’re alone in being frightened of labour. There is a lot that you can do to alleviate your anxieties. Founder of Natal Hypnotherapy, Maggie Howell, says that all fear is surmountable, “always remember that ‘fear is not real’ and ‘fear is a choice’. At any given time, you can make a choice to stop being scared about something which may or may not happen in the future. Just because your aunt had a terrible birth, or the section rate at your hospital is high or you’ve binge watched One Born Every Minute – does not mean that those experiences have to become your experience.”
If you think you may be suffering from Tokophobia – a genuine, debilitating fear of labour (this actually keeps some women from ever falling pregnant), talk to your midwife. Tokophobic women may be able to access therapeutic, mental health services, which will often take them on a journey to uncover the seed of their anxiety. They may be offered Cognitive Behavioural Therapy or hypnosis to clear out the negative blockages at the back of the mind. It is also completely reasonable to ask for a Caesarean birth in these circumstances.

SUPERHERO MUM JO TUTCHENER- SHARP, FOUNDER OF SCAMP & DUDE, TELLS VICTORIA EVANS HOW SERIOUS ILLNESS INSPIRED HER TO HELP OTHERS There’s a quite a story behind Scamp & Dude, can you tell us about it? I had a brain haemorrhage in October 2015, then had surgery to remove a blood tumour in January 2016. While I was in hospital recovering from the surgery, and desperately missing my kids, I came up with this idea. It really struck me how difficult it must be for kids when their parents are seriously ill; the time away in hospital and the recovery time at home - it’s so hard for kids. Even though mine had their amazing dad, and my wonderful parents with them, I knew they would find it hard when I wasn’t around. I wished there was something I could have given them, something to watch over them, to keep them safe, and to make them think I was close. Hence the creation of the Superhero Sleep Buddy. It’s a Superhero comforter, in the form of a shaped dinosaur or bunny cushion, that can sit on the bed and watch over kids while they sleep. On the back is a pocket that 14 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

holds a photograph of the person they want to keep close. For every Superhero Sleep Buddy sold, we donate one to a vulnerable child: whether they have a seriously ill parent, have lost a parent, or are in hospital themselves and need a Superhero to have their back. We are working with some amazing charities such as Don’t Forget the Kids and Grief Encounter, as well as with London’s leading children’s hospital. How did the family cope while you were ill? My family were absolutely brilliant. After the haemorrhage, I was really unwell. I used to go back to my parents’ house, while my husband was working, and spend time with my kids. It was very scary as there was a possibility I could have had another haemorrhage at any time. So, it was hard for everyone, but they all gathered round, stayed positive, kept smiling, and we all got through it. It felt like we were all going through this together. I actually spent most of my time worrying about how they were all feeling, my kids, my husband, my parents, my sisters, and my closest friends. I knew this wasn’t easy for anyone. I kept thinking about single parents, or parents who don’t have close family around. It’s such a horribly hard thing to go through, despite having an amazing network around me, supporting me. I am very aware that not everyone has this, and it was this thought that drove me to try and help in some way. How did the link up with Liberty come about? Through the power of Instagram! I have worked in the beauty industry for many years. The beauty buyer for Liberty and I followed each other on Instagram. I sent her a direct message asking if she could
introduce me to their kids’ buyer. She replied, ‘well, as fate would have it, it’s me!’ She had taken over kids, as well as beauty, so it really was fate! She invited me in to present the collection to her. The rest is history. Liberty is my absolute favourite store in the world. I couldn’t be happier that Scamp & Dude will be there.
times when I was facing brain surgery, thinking about my kids growing up without me. It really affected me, but it gave me the strong desire to do good and help others. It was this desire that led to the creation of Scamp & Dude.
What’s a typical day like for you, or is there one? I get the boys ready, then take Sonny to school while my husband drops Jude at nursery. I then head to the office, put my head down and try to get as much done before 3pm, when I have to go and collect Sonny from school. He’s only just started school, in September, so I am still getting used to these shorter working days, which can be a challenge when your to-do list is the size of Mars. I spend my days dealing with the factories, making decisions, checking samples and providing feedback (I am a nightmare client as I’m a huge perfectionist), working with web designers, designing my next collection, dealing with all of the safety tests and legalities that come with starting a brand; the list goes on and on. What have you learned from previous business experiences, which has helped you this time? Running your own business is not for the work-shy. I become completely obsessed with whatever business I am working on. I live and breathe it. My haemorrhage was caused by stress, so I am now more aware of not getting into horribly stressful situations. I’ve changed my life in order to make it less stressful, more fulfilling and meaningful. I went through some dark CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 15

HAPPY CHRISTMAS FROM
SHARKY & GEORGE CHRISTMAS DAY CAN TEST EVERY MEMBER OF THE FAMILY, AND IT CAN BE HARD TO KEEP EVERYONE ENTERTAINED. WE’VE COLLATED OUR BEST IDEAS AT SHARKY & GEORGE HQ TO TO HELP MAKE THIS THE BEST CHRISTMAS DAY FOR EVERYONE. challenge during the meal, without being busted by anyone. For example, “Smuggle a sprout into your neighbour’s water glass”. If you get caught, there should be a bowl full of forfeits that you have to choose from (eg. dance around the table like a chicken).
The Farmyard Carols One musical(ish) person is nominated “Conductor”. Everyone else is split into groups of 3 or 4 people. The Conductor tells each group which farmyard animal they represent for the carols, and that they should practice their sounds loudly. The Conductor then uses a stick, or spoon, as their baton to silence the choir. When the Conductor chooses a favourite carol, he or she points to a group, which then starts to sing the tune through the medium of their animal’s sound. The Conductor chooses when to point at different groups throughout the song. The overall effect is magical. Challenge under the plate One person in the family writes out a challenge for each person present at lunch, then places it under their corresponding place mats or plates. When everyone sits down to lunch, they secretly read their challenge. The aim is to execute the 20 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Decanter Banana, Banana Decanter Now, this is messy, but it is utterly brilliant! Get a decanter, or bottle, with a wide neck and pour a couple of shots of warmed brandy in. Peel a banana. Light a scrap of paper or napkin, and drop it into the decanter. Let the brandy catch fire. Then place one end of the banana into the mouth of the decanter. As the flame uses up all the oxygen in the bottle, the banana will, revoltingly, get sucked in and plop to the bottom of the decanter! Make sure you have a decent bottle brush to wash up afterwards. Christmas practical jokes The best Christmas practical joke to play on the most annoying relative is the animal game. You set up the game as “animal charades”, where the rest of the family must guess what animal the actor is portraying. When choosing the ‘victim’, make sure you select someone who is very confident in their acting ability; someone who won’t mind being teased a little. Before you take the actor (or victim!) out of the room to tell them what animal they must be, secretly tell an accomplice what animal the actor will be. When you’re outside, your accomplice then tells everyone what animal the actor will try to be. When the actor returns, everyone guesses every animal they can think of, EXCEPT the correct one! Watch
as the poor actor tears their hair out with frustration! Indoor fireworks display Always brilliant fun after Christmas lunch. Make sure you remember to do them on a foil covered plate so you don’t burn holes in the table (just google “indoor fireworks”). And, if that isn’t enough … Christmas Boxed Up We can put together bespoke boxes - one for each family member. Each box is linked to the other with corresponding contents, but the contents will vary. Base everything on a traditional Christmas theme, with an awesome twist. Whilst getting creative, the family discovers clues to crack the secret code that opens a mysterious, locked briefcase. The family needs to work together to decipher each part, to reveal the final surprise in the case! Let us know if you would like more details. Companies at Christmas We have organised and provided entertainment for children at hundreds of corporate Christmas parties over the years. lanning a nursery for the imminent, precious new arrival in your life? Let this gentle and calming design, complete with delightfully evocative woodland creatures inspire you to create a gorgeous, gender neutral scheme.
Piet Hein Eek’s delightfully distressed and super realistic Scrapwood wallpaper forms the backdrop to the room with Oeuf NYC’s contemporary white Sparrow cotbed taking centre stage. A snuggly Berber rug creates softness underfoot with Tom Raffield’s No.1 pendant sculpturally echoing the wooden theme. Night lights will add a welcoming warming glow to the nursery; the White Rabbit or lovely Lying Fawn lamps are bright enough to sit and read a book by and soft enough to gently illuminate to help your little one sleep. Dress the room with a range of enchanting wooden framed art prints, a smart toy storage bag with a splash of zingy colour and cosy cushions to complete a magical woodland themed nursery. 1. FOOD BY JO PRATT
H
anding out some homemade edible gifts for the teachers, friends or family this Christmas is guaranteed to earn you and the kids plenty of gold stars (or a good school report next term). These festive treats are really fun to make and easy enough to get the kids involved, too. You’ll probably have all the clearing up to do, but I’m afraid that’s all part of being a parent! My advice is to save some of the goodies for yourself (especially the Chocolate Cherry Liqueur) and it’ll all be worth it!
WHITE CHOCOLATE, ORANGE AND CRANBERRY COOKIES MAKES about 12 125g butter, softened 75g caster sugar finely grated zest of 1 orange 1 egg yolk 150g plain flour 100g white chocolate drops 50g dried cranberries Preheat the oven to 180ºC/fan 160ºC/gas 4. 1.
Beat together the butter and sugar until it is pale and creamy, either in an electric mixer or if you are feeling energetic, then by hand. Beat in the orange zest and egg yolk. Add the flour, half of the white chocolate drops and cranberries. Mix until you have a smooth dough, with the only lumps being the chocolate and cranberries.
2.
Using your hands, roll the dough into golfsized balls and lightly press each one flat on to a greased baking sheet, making sure they are spread slightly apart.
3.
Bake for 10-12 minutes until golden. Remove from the oven and let cool a couple of minutes before cooling completely on a wire rack.
5.
Melt the remaining white chocolate in a small bowl over a pan of simmering water, or very gently in the microwave. Drizzle over the cooled cookies. Leave to set and the cookies are ready to pack/wrap or simply eat.
PS…The white chocolate can be replaced for milk or plain chocolate if preferred. Other dried fruits can be used instead of cranberries, such as cherries or sultanas. You can also add 50g chopped macadamia or pecan nuts to the cookie dough. 22 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
GINGERBREAD SNOWFLAKES
FOOD BY JO PRATT
MAKES 26 x 8 cm biscuits (or more or less, depending on the size of your pastry cutter).
125g light muscovado sugar
375g plain flour, plus extra for dusting
1 tbsp black treacle
2 tbsp ground ginger
1 tbsp golden syrup
1 tbsp cocoa powder
1 large egg, lightly beaten
1 tsp ground cinnamon
coloured writing icing tubes
1 tsp baking powder 125g butter, softened
Pre-heat the oven to 180C/160C fan ovens/gas 4. 1. 2.
3.
4.
Sift together the flour, ginger, cocoa, cinnamon and baking powder. In a separate bowl, beat together the butter and sugar with an electric hand whisk until it is slightly creamy. Add the treacle, golden syrup and egg. Beat until smooth. Using a wooden spoon, gradually add the flour mixture, a little at a time so the flour doesn’t go everywhere, and then finish off with your hands to form a smooth dough, kneading lightly on the worktop. Roll the gingerbread dough out on a flour dusted worktop, to around the thickness of a £1 coin. Using a pastry cutter,

cut out as many small or large biscuit shapes as you can, and place on greased baking sheets. There is no need to space them well apart as the dough won’t spread while cooking. Place in the pre-heated oven and cook for 10-12 minutes, until they are starting to firm up. If you want to hang them on your Christmas tree, make a hole with a skewer, near the edge while they are still hot. Transfer to a wire rack to cool. Once cold the gingerbread biscuits can be decorated like snowflakes (or, of course whatever pattern you or the kids like).
PS… Once made these will keep, un-decorated, for 3 weeks in an airtight container and decorate when required. If they are decorated too soon, they will become soft.
A special treat for the grown-ups.
CHOCOLATE CHERRY LIQUEUR MAKES about 800ml 200g good quality milk chocolate, broken into pieces 300ml single cream 400ml Cherry Brandy 1 large egg, lightly beaten
Melt the chocolate and cream in a bowl over a pan of simmering water, or gently in the microwave. Stir well until the mixture is smooth, cover with cling film and leave to cool to room temperature. Once it’s cool, stir in the Cherry Brandy.
There are more recipes to suit all members of the family in Jo’s “In the Mood for Quick Family Food”
Pour the Chocolate Cherry Liqueur into 1 or 2 sterilized glass bottles and store at room temperature. Before drinking or pouring over ice-cream, shake the bottle lightly before using. The liqueur will last for a good few weeks (if it isn’t all drunk before then).
PS… You can make this into a chocolate Orange Liqueur by swapping the Cherry Brandy for an orange flavoured liqueur. Alternatively, use whatever flavour liqueur takes your fancy, such as hazelnut, almond, coffee, coconut or mint. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 23

In the meantime, the asteroid mission’s lead scientist Professor Dante Lauretta has created Xtronaut to keep us busy on Earth whilst we wait. THE STATE OF BOARDING
by IRFAN LATIF

World Book Day at Sexey’s © Tom Balch Photography
I’m often surprised to hear that so few parents have heard of state boarding schools; but they are often recognised as the UK education’s ‘best-kept’ secret. Given that state boarding can offer a stable, caring environment and provide high-quality education, state boarding schools seem to offer the Holy Grail – all at a reasonable cost. Any student with a UK passport is eligible for state boarding. The costs are limited to the boarding element. The educational provision is, like community-based state schools, free. Therefore, state-funded boarding school fees are typically around a third of the cost of the independent sector. A state boarding school costs, roughly, £10,000 a year; a number that compares positively to private school fees, which have increased by an average of 20 per cent since 2010 – four times the rate of growth in average earnings, according to Lloyds Banking Group. That’s not a small difference, especially for London parents struggling with rising living costs, and juggling the demands of the school run and extracurriculars, while working long hours or with travel expectations. Of course, cost isn’t everything. Our children’s education is worth every penny, but pupils at my own school, Sexey’s in Bruton, Somerset 28 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

(and, no doubt, at the other 37 state boarding schools up and down the country), are also involved in their local communities. They have an understanding of how the breadth of society works, and most importantly, can converse easily with people from all walks of life. Simultaneously, they also benefit from many of the elements often valued in independent education: excellent facilities, pastoral care, and a range of extracurricular activities that promise a tailored, unique experience for each child, from music, sport, art, and drama to horse-riding and debating.
of parents by the State Boarding Forum found that over 80 per cent choose state boarding schools due to their high academic standard, and the opportunity for children to fulfil their potential.
But, what about the level of education? All state boarding schools follow the National Curriculum, and pupils take the same exams as they would in a state day school. Whilst the exams are the same, the performance typically exceeds that of many other state schools, with state boarding schools frequently featuring at the top of league tables. For example, Sexey’s achieved the best state school GCSE results in the South West this year. It was also listed as being in the Top 50 state schools across the country for their GCSE grades. The school’s A Levels this year were also strong: over 34 per cent achieving A*-A (versus 25.7 per cent nationally); and over 86 per cent reaching A*-C (versus 75 per cent nationally). A survey
Parents usually find a school that meets their requirements, no matter how specific they are. For further information, please take a look at the State Boarding Forum website www.stateboarding.org.uk.
Of course, boarding isn’t for everyone. If it is something you would consider for your child, there are 37 different state boarding schools around England - from selective to comprehensive, from co-educational to single-sex, from primary, secondary and sixth-form.

EDUCATION A NEW HEAD FOR NOTTING HILL AND EALING HIGH SCHOOL Following the retirement of Ms Lucinda Hunt after eight very successful years, Notting Hill & Ealing High School are looking forward to welcoming Mr Matthew Shoults, who will be joining them in January 2017. Matthew takes over after leaving North London Collegiate School (NLCS) where he was Senior Deputy Head (Curriculum). On his appointment Matthew said “Right from my first visit to Notting Hill and Ealing, I have been struck by the school’s warm and friendly atmosphere, and how grounded and assured the girls are. The last 12 years teaching has given me a keen sense of the confidence and community which a girls’ only education can provide; I am delighted to be joining a school with such a positive and enabling ethos, which is both academic and rich in activities beyond the classroom, and with such good relations between staff and students.” www.nhehs.gdst.net

Andrew has been the Headmaster of Stonyhurst College in Lancashire since September 2006, and has succeeded Chris Cleugh who retired from St Benedict’s in September Andrew studied Modern Languages at Bristol University, having attended Skinners School in Tunbridge Wells. He taught at Winchester College, where he became Head of Modern Languages. He joined Birkdale School in Sheffield in September 2002 as Deputy Head before being appointed as Headmaster of Stonyhurst College in September 2006. Andrew said: “St Benedict’s begins a new chapter this year, with a significant amount of change: as well as a new Headmaster, the school has four new members of the Senior Executive Team. This is a wonderful opportunity to strive for the highest possible standards, and to build upon the many strengths the school already has.” St Benedict’s is an Independent Catholic, co-educational day school for 3 to 18 year olds.

SCHOOL DIARIES
In the last couple of issues we’ve followed two schools with differing agendas, as they go from the planning stage to finally opening their doors. Falkner House Boys’ School prepares to select its first cohort for 2017 entry. While at Ealing Fields, staff and pupils are in the swing of things after a rather explosive start to term!
by ELEANOR DIXON
We always knew that, rather than integrating boys into Falkner House, we wanted to open a separate boys’ school. Falkner House has existed in a girls-only format for over sixty years, and we wanted to keep to what we do well. Subsequently, the new Falkner House will be a brother school to the girls’ school, with the boys and girls joining up for clubs and schoolwide events. Hopefully the best of all worlds for families.
What makes us favour single sex? Ultimately, we feel that most boys learn differently from most girls. Generally, boys make for a classroom with a tad more mess, muddle, noise and energy; there may be somewhat shorter attention spans, but also extraordinary depth of concentration. We see these traits as something to work with, not against, and have worked to find teachers that find these classic characteristics of small boys, endearing. They are specialists in getting the very best from young boys. The spiked nature of many boys’ intellectual profile is seen as a challenge rather than a problem: brilliant at English but possibly poor co-ordination; untidy handwriting but fantastic general knowledge; amazing at maths but shy. Falkner House, as with any good school, will emphasise a truly bespoke approach to each pupil. Sport and outdoor play are important for all children, but crucial for boys. Falkner House believes that free time in the playground is of huge benefit, while sport can simultaneously generate camaraderie, teach fair play and channel competitiveness. We are just now starting the exciting process of assessing our prospective 2017 Reception boys. We are looking for potential and indications of talent, rather than achievement. Working collaboratively with the boys we assess focus, concentration, working memory, a seeming wish to learn and, of course, the all-important “character.” At this young age, over thirty years of experience tells us that assessment at 4+ is an inexact science and we are well aware that if judgements are fallible for girls they are even trickier for boys-boys are different! Our team are confident though that, whilst there will be “false negatives”, there will not be “false positives”. Over the next few weeks we look forward to meeting over 60 boys before we start making the ever difficult decisions. So many great boys, but limited places …

It was always going to be a beginning full of surprises, but when Ealing Fields opened its doors on Tuesday, 6th of September, we had no idea what was in store only a couple of days later. We still had builders at school that week wrapping up some site details; and on Thursday, they uncovered a bomb. Not a metaphorical bomb, but a real phosphorus by LEE FAITH bomb that had fallen in 1942! Although the bomb had exploded, the disturbed phosphorus still smoked - a characteristic of phosphorus - and that gave us some concern. But, once all necessary precautions had been taken, we took the experience as a good reminder that opportunities for learning can be found anywhere; and so an already memorable inaugural week gave us all accidental lessons in chemistry (properties of phosphorus!) and history (Ealing was in German bombers’ sites during the Blitz!). Since then, our days have been quieter, though we are ever busy. We took our 120 year 7 students for a three-day, two-night residential in Kent; where we balanced thoughtful, group-bonding exercises with high-adrenaline challenges such as the Leap of Faith, where students (in harnesses, for those of you thinking of health and safety!) leapt off a telegraph pole to grasp monkey bars that were just out of reach. And, as with any start of secondary school, we’ve worked hard to help the students acclimate to their new environment, implementing practices that are central to Ealing Fields’ mission, such as family dining and prep. Just last week, the last bit of signage and wayfinding went up; and I must confess to heaving a sign of relief. After so many months of hard work, Ealing Fields is up and running with everyone students and staff alike - walking along familiar paths and seeing familiar faces. But that doesn’t mean that we’re resting! As we put the finishing touches on the school, we hosted an Open Evening, attended by about 1,000 people, and 2017 applications are already coming in. Meanwhile, we’re looking past half-term to embed and consolidate what we’ve started. Students will be handed more responsibilities during family dining (where each student has a duty such as setting tables, serving, clearing, etc.); we are finetuning our selection of after-school clubs, which will include chess, cross country and coding, among others; and finally we’ve trained students to participate in our Values Shout-out, where they can commend a fellow student or member of staff for exemplifying one of our three values: Curiosity, Integrity and Courage.

W
ith Christmas just around the corner, here’s the perfect excuse to splash out on those sumptuous hard backs you’ve been eyeing up all year.
PRE-SCHOOLER Dogs In Cars by Emmanuelle Walker (Flying Eye Books)
Felix
Massie
PRIMARY and
This is a super fun counting book which incorporates a huge variety of four legged friends all going for a ride in their cars. The illustrations are stylish and cheery as well as being very detailed - perfect for little fingers to try and count all of the dogs. Plus, it’s not just dogs you have to find but bones, mosquitos, and umbrellas amongst other things. Not only will this help your child with their counting, you’ll also learn the difference between a xoloitzcuintlis and a utonagans - perfect knowledge for the pub quiz.
Pandora by Victoria Turnbull (Frances Lincoln Children’s Books) This is an absolutely beautiful gem of a book with a touching message about hope and new beginnings. Pandora lives on her own in a ‘land of broken things’ where other people’s trash is her treasure and she makes a home out of lost things, giving them a new lease of life. Her world is transformed when she discovers a bird with a broken wing. With plenty of TLC the bird is soon back to full health. Only to fly away. Forever. Leaving poor Pandora alone again, but in time she learns that life is worth living again. This is such an excellent book on so many levels, Victoria Turnbull’s illustrations have a retro quality to them and her use of a dark palate convey the sense disillusion of Pandora’s world.

PRIMARY Illuminature by Carnovsky and written by Rachel Williams (Wide Eyed Editions) Make space on your shelves for this big beauty of a book. Using the three magic viewing lenses which are included in every edition, this is a real shared experience as you discover which animals inhabit which environment. This is a really technicoloured experience as the colours literally jump out of the page. Designed by Milan-based partnership Carnovsky and written by Rachel Williams (also author of the brilliant Atlas of Adventures) it’s jam packed with facts from animal from all over the world. This is a really visually arresting book for those curious about nature.
BOOK REVIEW
JUNIOR The White Fox by Jackie Morris (Barrington Stoke) Inspired by a true story of an Artic fox who climbed into a rubbish truck and ended up in Seattle, this is a real heart-warming wintery story which covers grief, bullying, and a road trip which finally bonds a father and son. And all because of a fox. Since the death of his mother, Sol lives alone with his dad, but the weight of grief is so all pervading that the dad has become distant from Sol as he comes to terms with the loss of his wife. School isn’t a happy place either and he spends his days trying to dodge the bullies who tease him, because of his ‘black hair and dark eyes,’ calling him Shamon boy. So Sol spends his time down at the docks and it’s there he spies a white fox – a fox the dockers manage to catch. A fox, he, along with his dad decide to return back to the wild in Alaska, which is where is grandparents live. A place which holds painful memories for the dad but happy memories for Sol. Dreamy illustrations accompany this cleverly woven tale that will really get young minds thinking.

A Year Full of Stories 52 Folk Tales and Legends from All Around the World by Angela McAllister and illustrated by Christopher Corr (Frances Lincoln Children’s Books)
The Song from Somewhere Else by A.F Harrold and illustrated by Levi Pinfold (Bloomsbury)
Travel the world without leaving the sitting room with this fantastic treasury celebrating 52 stories from across the globe. There’s a tale for every week of the year and each one ties in with popular celebrations, events and seasons including Valentine’s Day, Easter, Harvest, Christmas plus many more. There are stories from every continent, gathering folk tales, myths and traditions which have been bought to life by the award-winning Angela Mcallister. Short enough to keep attention spans going, but long enough to ponder the message and meaning which lies within each story, coupled with Christopher Corr’s beautiful and colourful illustrations, this book is a real must-have that will entertain children and adults alike.
From the same author as The Imaginary, A.F Harrold returns with another story mixing dark with light, this time looking at the theme of bullying. When Frank’s bike is thrown into stinging nettle by the local bullies, an strange boy called Nick saves the day. From here the pair strike up an unlikely friendship and when Frank finds something magical in Nick’s basement, it all makes sense about his mysterious background. The illustrations are stunning, dark and brooding and compliment this story of differences and what it means to fit in. Quirky and beautiful.
Sharon Fried-Jones is a west London mum, who by day is the Head of Marketing and Digital for the charity Book Trust which inspires a love of reading in children, and by night is an aspiring children’s author with a love of clashing clothes and picture books who longs for a good night’s sleep.
