“HOLIDAYS” WITH KIDS The sun is out, bags are being packed and we have entered ‘oxymoron season’ - time to go on ‘holiday’ with the kids. For, as any (honest) parent will tell you, there is no such thing. The husband and I share a joke about the moment he sets the house alarm, while me and our three sit outside in the airport taxi. As he punches in the code, he thinks, “I could stand here and not move for two weeks. It will be less stressful than if I get in that car.” Family holidays are like real-life with the volume turned up: a series of even higher-highs and extremely low-lows.

time-difference to your baby, and then avoiding the exhausted eyes of guests at breakfast whose rooms adjoin yours. One of the first holidays we took with our son was to the Isle of Wight. We felt so clever, avoiding a flight, yet giving him the thrill of the ferry and hiring a lovely big cottage. But we were so useless at getting out of the house each morning and as our energetic son suffered from ‘carcolepsy’, we would arrive at each day’s destination with an 18 month-old asleep in the back. There is not a tourist attraction car-park on that island that I haven’t sat silently in for at least 90 minutes (and this was before i-phones). My ante-natal-classmate, Lisa, summed up her first holiday with a baby 13 years ago when I messaged to see how it was going: “Same shit. Different sink” came her pithy reply. Ever since, I’ve wondered why websites don’t market family holidays based solely on the view from the kitchen sink. But, as with so many aspects of parenting, things do get easier as the kids get older. Sometimes all you need is a couple of hours peace while they go wild in a kids club to keep everyone on an even keel. Reading a book by the poolside will, one day, become gloriously possible. In the meantime, beware the lure of taking a quick break ‘sans enfant’. You decide, with a mix of guilt and excitement, to take a short holiday ‘pour deux’ (using French makes it seem

...once you’re a parent, holidays can, in fact, be an even greater test of endurance than being at home. If you aren’t prepared for this, it can come as a shock. Pre-children, holidays are bliss: no commute, getting up late, afternoon sex, boozy lunches, reading books, exploring the city at dusk, care-free outdoor swimming…I’m afraid I must stop; this is too painful. But once you’re a parent, holidays can, in fact, be an even greater test of endurance than being at home. Stripped of childcare, the refuge of your workplace and helpful grandparents, holidays can serve as a two-week reminder of everything that has changed and everything that your partner does ‘wrong.’ It starts before you’ve even left. You discover that your new baby can only travel as light as a full family of Kardashians. Your case groans beneath the weight of bottles, nappies, suncreams, clothes for every possible temperature, detergent to wash poo-stained babygros and so on. Finally, you reason that you can wear flip flops day and night as you’d rather pack an extra tub of formula (can’t risk them not selling your brand) than your wedge heels. Living in London and making your flight is invariably stressful. But throw in a last minute poo-nami, a return dash for the pram sun-shade (which you told your partner to get) and it becomes as relaxing as that moment you were told that your post-birth stitches would be done by a ‘trainee’ midwife. And there’s a reason why passengers flying with children aren’t allowed the extra leg-room of the emergency door. They say it’s because you’ll be too distracted to open it in the event of a crisis. This is untrue. It’s because every flight attendant knows you might be tempted to open it mid-flight and throw your child out. Literally nothing is more testing than flying with children who are too young to appreciate Peppa Pig on repeat. If you’re flying long-haul, I wish you luck in explaining the

You clink champagne glasses, inhale a whole novel on the flight and remember what thinking feels like. But somehow, you can’t quite capture the pre-child sense of wild abandon that made clubbing ’til dawn such fun. There’s a gap where your munchkin should be that even the best pre-breakfast swim can’t fill and you spend five days wishing they were there because they would simply love the folded towel animals wearing sunglasses. The grass isn’t always greener. It’s a challenge – but we must learn to appreciate what we have now. Don’t say I didn’t warn you.

ometimes children’s questions take us by surprise. “Why, Mama, is it called the United Kingdom when we have a queen? Why isn’t it called a Queendom?” While I had already got to thinking that the United Kingdom is something of an oxymoronic name in today’s political climate, I hadn’t ever questioned why our longest-serving monarch didn’t get a look in. Questioning and then changing long-held perceptions and practices is rarely a swift process. Particularly when these working patterns were set in a previous era, when women were expected to stay at home, men were the breadwinners and children were to be seen and not heard. According to the Equality and Human Rights Commission (EHRC), 54,000 mothers a year are forced out of their jobs – they are either made redundant while on maternity leave or are forced out by being refused f lexible working. Have you digested that frightening number? Put another way, a whopping 77% of women in the workforce have faced discrimination or lost their job while on maternity leave. It probably happened to you, it definitely happened to someone close to you and it is likely to have made you jump up and down with frustration, or elicited wracking sobs halfway through a consolatory bottle of wine with your fellow evictees. Anna Whitehouse, aka Mother Pukka, is someone who has turned jumping up and down on the subject into an art form, usually clad in a kaleidoscope of lycra with her daughter, Mae, championing the cause by her side. A vlogger for people who happen to be parents, reads her Instagram profile, #parentingtheshitoutof life. Anna is a dynamic force, shaking up the entrenched and outdated ways of the working world in a funny, self-deprecating, positive, intelligent, vibrant and on-the-money way. She tells it like it is – on all areas of motherhood. After living in Amsterdam, where, “family comes first,” Anna ...the out-of-date idea that bread-winning is for both was frustrated by the UK’s accepted genders but care-giving is still only for one, is something approach of, “pretending you don’t have a job when you are at home and that stubbornly persists. pretending you don’t have a family when you are at work.” She set up Mother Pukka to combat There is a common thread that weaves through the the inf lexibility. “Instead of just talking about it from my stories of an eclectic female band expounding on the subject, perspective, I wanted to talk about it in a way that might from Anne-Marie Slaughter, Hillary Clinton’s former policy change the landscape just a little bit.” Cue her Flex Appeal advisor, to Prue Leith, the chef and new Bake Off judge, and campaign, which has seen her and hundreds of other people that is: women can be equal to men, but only if men become f lash mob in cities across the country, including in Trafalgar more equal at home. How the power of the pixel is helping us take a stand against outdated working practices by SOPHIE CLOWES

FEATURE Working nine ’til five (Dolly, if you’re reading this, your lyrics were bang on then and still hold strong today) has become a cultural norm, even if those hours are outdated in their brevity. T

here is nothing better than firing up the barbecue during the summer months – it’s such a sociable form of cooking. Whether it’s with friends or family, everyone gathers around and enjoys the aromas and flavours the barbecue creates. Whichever type of barbecue you have, charcoal or gas, big or small, it’s amazing just how versatile they can be when it comes to what can be cooked. However, more often than not, we turn to the old-time favourites … quick-cooking bangers, steak, burgers and corn-on-thecob etc. So, how about you try cooking something that can be left to cook low ’n slow while you enjoy the company of your friends/family, a couple of drinks and the wonderful outdoors. This pulled pork is a real crowd pleaser. Its juicy, sweetly spiced and mildly smoked meat is delicious served with salads, roasted veggies, baked potatoes or simply sandwiched into a brioche burger bun. After cooking for five hours, the pork effortlessly pulls apart. It will require a little advance planning as you’ll need to cure the meat overnight in salt and sugar. This isn’t a last minute kind of dish, but the end result is worth the wait. As for something sweet to finish with, since you have the barbecue all set and fired up, simply add a few more coals to increase the heat a little, then cook these fantastically sweet, fruity, nutty stuffed apple parcels.

MAPLE AND MUSTARD PULLED 2kg piece boned pork shoulder, rind/skin removed 75g sea salt 75g dark brown sugar 2 tbsp English mustard powder

TAKES 5 hours cooking plus overnight salting SERVES 8 TO SERVE Brioche buns , Sliced gherkins, Coleslaw

75g wholegrain mustard 75g maple syrup 150ml orange juice

Have fun, happy barbecuing and enjoy the summer!

Top Tips

to prepare a charcoal barbeque for low ’n slow cooking, place a small amount of charcoal in the corner of your barbecue so you have an island/mound of coals on one side. Light them, cover with a lid and adjust the air vents for a nice, low heat. Leave to heat up as you would your conventional oven. Many barbecues have a built-in thermometer, which is perfect for low ’n slow cooking. If your barbecue doesn’t, you can easily get hold of a barbecue temperature gauge that you can attach to the barbecue. Or, if you fancy a real boy-toy, then use a digital infrared thermometer temperature gun. Amazon has a great selection of both types to choose from.

The day before you plan to cook the pork, put it in a non-metallic dish or a large food bag. Mix together the sea salt and brown sugar and rub all over the pork. Leave in the fridge overnight to draw out excess water, tenderise and evenly season the meat.

2.

The following day, wipe the sugary salt off the pork and sit it in a roasting tray. Mix together the English mustard powder and cayenne pepper, scatter all over the pork and bring to room temperature for about 30 minutes.

3.

In the meantime, light your barbecue for low ’n slow indirect cooking. Keep at a fairly consistent low heat, around 140°C.

4.

Mix together the wholegrain mustard and maple syrup. Spread over the pork, making sure it covers the meat.

Pour the orange juice and 200ml water into the bottom of the tin and put into the barbeque. Cover with the lid and cook for five hours, regulating the air vents and adding more coal throughout if need be. Baste the pork with any juices a couple of times. If it starts to colour too much towards the end, cover loosely with foil. If the base of the pan starts to become too dry, add a splash of water. 5.

Remove from the barbeque for 20-30 minutes, loosely

and leave to covered with

rest foil.

6.

Transfer the pork to a serving plate or board. Shred the meat into strips with two forks. Skim any fat from the juices in the pan and serve to pour over the pork. Serve in brioche buns with gherkins and coleslaw.

Note

if you don’t want to cook for the full five hours on the barbecue, you can cook for half of the time in an oven set at 140°C/ gas 1, then cook on the barbecue for the remaining two and a half hours.

BARBECUED APPLES

4 large cox or royal gala apples 50g sultanas, raisins, dried cranberries or dried cherries 50ml dark rum or apple juice 75g soft brown sugar

TAKES 35-40 minutes cooking SERVES 4 TO SERVE Ice cream, clotted cream or Greek yoghurt

1 tsp ground cinnamon Finely grated zest of ½ orange 50g pecan nuts or walnuts, chopped 25g butter

1.

Prepare the barbeque so it is burning at about 170°C.

2.

Remove the core from the apples using a corer or small knife, to create a cavity through the middle of each apple. Sit each apple on a sheet of foil large enough to wrap the apples well.

3.

Mix together the dried fruit, rum or apple juice, sugar, cinnamon, orange zest and nuts. Stuff generously into the apples, letting any excess spill over. Top the

apples with a dot of butter and wrap each one tightly so they are well sealed. 4.

5.

Place the apples in the barbecue, sitting on the grill. Cover with the lid and cook for 35-40 minutes, until soft to touch. Rotate a couple of times for even cooking. Leave to cool for 5 minutes before unwrapping and topping with ice cream, clotted cream or Greek yoghurt.

SUMMER FUN IN W12

Beat the heat with these tips for a cool summer kids party in your own garden. As the sun comes out and the days get warmer, summer is the perfect time to throw a party and get your children outside, where they can enjoy the garden and the weather. The people behind the luxury family homes, Ashchurch Villas, have some top tips to help entertain the kids. HEALTHY SUMMER SNACKS - Simply stick a popsicle stick through the lid of a small yogurt pot, pop in the freezer, remove wrapping et voilà. Nothing says summer like watermelon! Try using a biscuit cutter to cut the watermelon into fun shapes, pop on a kebab stick with other fruits such as blueberries and raspberries. GIANT BUBBLES - A simple way to add a magical touch! All you need is a hula hoop and a large container filled with water mixed with fairy liquid (it needs to be large enough for the hula hoop to be dipped in flat and lifted out). SLIP AND SLIDE - Make your slide out of tarpaulin, throw in some fairy liquid for extra slip and turn on a sprinkler at the top. Don’t have a sprinkler? Simply attach a hose to a large plastic bottle that has had lots of small pin sized holes pricked into it. RAINBOW WATER FIGHTS - Get all the kids to wear plain white t-shirts and add a drop of watercolour paint as you fill up the water guns!

EDUCATION

AUGMENTIFYING STEAM As a parent, you can’t get away from technology. It’s all around us and it’s here to stay. The good news is that tech can be used in exciting new ways to bring education, play and learning to life.

WELCOME TO THE AGE OF AUGMENTED REALITY, OR AR SO, WHAT IS AR?

WHAT CAN AR DO FOR PARENTS?

Augmented Reality is basically a digital layering of content onto the real world. An AR app is used to bring things to life. Yep, you heard correctly. The app brings 2D objects or reading material to life. How does it work? You will need a phone or tablet that is compatible with the AR app you wish to download. Once you have downloaded your app of choice, open the app and point your device at specific image targets that are compatible with that app. This could be a special AR-powered book or product you see on a supermarket shelf. Each company that creates an AR app uses their tech to focus on different things. There are a few companies around.

AR is a really fun way to play and interact with your child. It provides children with a new way of engaging with content and information that may otherwise seem boring to this new tech-savvy generation. Getting kids excited about learning at home, using gamification and the potential to blend the traditional card or quiz game with digital advances in play, holds attention and helps fire up those neurons! AR is easy to use with the right tools. All you need is a tablet or phone you are willing to share, or hand over to your child! AR has the potential to provide quality screen time. Safe, entertaining, educational and a bit of time off for a coffee sounds like something every parent might need!

Zappar From bringing brands to life and a successful crowd-funded mixed reality campaign, Zappar have dipped into education to introduce children to the wonders of AR. A recent event at the Institute of Imagination in London saw children engage with tech through designing their own AR posters.

Blippar The largest company in terms of AR. Blippar’s primary role seems to be the use of AR in advertising. Their recent offering of a Christmas shopping treasure hunt in Covent Garden offered some festive fun in London. Blippar’s educational material is classroom-focused. AugmentifyIt The most recent company entering the world of AR is one that has been created purely for educational purposes: to bring STEM and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts & Maths) subjects to life. AugmentifyIt’s motto is “Play to Learn”, and brings learning to life through combining physical and digital play. Through bringing AR STEM learning experiences directly to parents and children, AugmentifyIt adds a new edge to the educational toy market. EDUCATION

DEVELOPING A LOVE OF READING It doesn’t have to be a struggle

I

n early March this year, it looked like Hogwarts had come to London on a school trip. Harry Potters and Hermiones, the more ambitious Dumbledores and Voldemorts, and even the occasional Death Eater were all waving wands and shouting charms and curses through school corridors and in classrooms. It was World Book Day. My son was one of those many Harrys. His teacher gave his class a gentle nudge to look outside the magical world for inspiration, but no, he was sure. He wanted to be Harry Potter. And who can blame him, really? Harry Potter is the book — that book — that, for the first time, propelled him to the sofa to read. He announced his progress — “I’m now on page 58!” — every five to ten minutes. We were lucky. My son, the younger brother of another Harry Potter fanatic, picked up the reading bug like a contagion, and I give thanks to J.K. Rowling every day. But it doesn’t always happen that way. There are many reluctant readers out there who just need a nudge. There are those for whom reading is just not a familiar practice. For others, who may be dyslexic or have other special needs, reading is a frustrating struggle. We’ve spoken to some well-versed experts to get their thoughts and ideas on encouraging kids to read, especially those who are reluctant or who struggle.

THE RELUCTANT READER It will come as no surprise that many kids would rather do something else. Football? Sure! Painting? Yes, please! Pokemon? Ummm, yeah … Reading? Not so much. “It’s all about trying to develop the reading habit,” says Sue Laidlaw of the consultancy Laidlaw Education. “Encouraging reading without worrying too much about what they are reading,” can lay the foundations for everyday reading. Look for something that might spark interest, like a magazine. Focusing on the classics too early will temper enthusiasm,

Laidlaw says. And she reminds parents that even adults mix up their reading: indulging in an easy magazine (ahem, Hello!), skimming newspapers, speeding through beach-reads and then reaching for some lofty non-fiction when inspired. Children can, and should, do the same, moving across different levels and topics. The important thing is to help children enjoy reading before they get into the habit of reading.

by CHRISTEN JAMAR

subscribing to a newspaper or a magazine can help make reading seem like an everyday activity. There’s no doubt that reading competes with screen time and social media, especially with tweens and teens. But Abi Elphinstone, author of the popular Dreamsnatcher trilogy, points out that many contemporary children’s authors are on Twitter and Instagram. Following them could be a way to encourage a child to read their books, with the added bonus of making authors seem more approachable.

THE LOW-CONFIDENCE READER

Burlington Primary School

Reading aloud to your child can also go a long way to broadening their interests. She notes that parents often develop a habit of reading to their children when they are very little, but stop once the child has started reading independently. “Even when they’re ten, eleven or twelve, reading to them is hugely beneficial. It’s nice to snuggle on the sofa and read to them. They can hear the nuances, the different voices and the subtleties missed when they are concentrating on decoding and other aspects of their own reading.” Modeling a reading habit can also encourage reading, Laidlaw says. Just

It can be more than a lack of interest that keeps kids from reading; some suffer from a lack of confidence, which keeps them quiet and under the radar in the classroom. “There are kids who will sit, nod, smile and listen, and you think they are doing so well. While, behind the scenes, it’s quite a different story,” says Elphinstone, who worked as a secondary teacher for some time. Some of this lack of confidence can come from a lack of exposure to books and reading in the home. Many children are “living in families where there aren’t any books present in the home. Also, parents are often very busy and there’s a lack of time for real conversation,” says Ginny Lunn, CEO of literacy charity Beanstalk. According to Beanstalk, over 200,000 children in England left primary school last year unable to read at the required level. Reading difficulties can have a palpable impact on their behaviour and self-confidence. Seventy per cent of those children permanently excluded from school have literacy challenges; and over fifty per cent of boys over the age of sixteen, who are having difficulties reading, see no point to school. Beanstalk has developed many strategies for improving literacy across England. Its army of volunteers spend one to two hours a week with Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 children who have been CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 29

EDUCATION identified as falling behind in reading. But some of their strategies could be transferred to the home. “It’s about taking the time with the child to really talk to them, to play with them, to get them interested,” says Lunn. “It’s all about making it exciting — what are the stories that are really going to get them interested?” In addition to the books themselves, Beanstalk volunteers use board games and puppets to help readers along. Beanstalk is also stepping up its efforts with nursery-aged children after primary head teachers pointed out that many kids enter reception with language challenges that set them back from the beginning.

pictures of her own adventures, including swimming across Scottish lochs and living with the Kazakh eagle hunters in Mongolia, which have fed into her stories. Her favourite trick is drawing a map — perhaps with a castle here and a forest there — to connect the dots of the plot. Regardless of whether a child is a reluctant reader, or one who is struggling to make sense of the reading code, reading

Abi Elphinstone above In Iceland center On Barbed Peaks aka Lochnagar in Cairngorms below Hiking in Scotland

THE STRUGGLING READER Many other children struggle to read because they can’t quite break the code of reading — they may be dyslexic, for example, a condition that has as many variations as people who have it. Author Elphinstone is one such person, and she believes that the best way to get kids into books is to tap into their innate love of stories. Elphinstone has difficulty processing information, particularly the fact-based learning of maths and sciences. She found, however, that she struggled less in history, art, and English, where learning was often channelled through stories that she could visualise, not only through text, but also through her imagination. For Elphinstone, it was her imagination and the drive to tell stories that helped her work around her dyslexia and become an author. She uses that spark to encourage all children, including those with dyslexia, to find their stories. “You can go and live your story before you write it, and that’s so helpful for dyslexic children because, once they visualise the scene, they can then get that onto paper,” she explains. While careful to state that grammar and spelling are important, she says those are skills a good teacher can help with, and “are secondary to finding your story.” In talks with schools, she takes oversized keys, an unusually shaped bone, or an encrusted mirror as objects of inspiration. She encourages children to look through picture books and at photographs to spark ideas. She shows 30 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

and telling stories is key, not only for the obvious practical reasons, but also to help children make sense of the world. Elphinstone paraphrases G.K. Chesterton: “Fairy tales don’t tell children that dragons exist. Children already know that dragons exist. Fairy tales tell children that dragons can be killed.”

BOOK REVIEW

The Little Gardener

Cinnamon

There’s a Werewolf in My Tent

by Emily Hughes (Flying Eye Books)

by Neil Gaiman with illustrations by Divya Srinivasan (Bloomsbury)

by Pamela Butchart, illustrated by Thomas Flintham (Nosy Crow)

For those fond of nature, this sweet story is one full of hope. When the little gardener struggles to grow anything on his plot, he is close to giving up. But then, he sees signs of life in the form of a little flower, but that isn’t quite enough to rescue the barren patch – until he makes a wish and his life is completely transformed. Subtle yet deep, and set against a dark palette, Emily Hughes’s tale of persistence is also one that restores faith in human kindness.

This stunningly depicted fable tells the tale of a princess called Cinnamon, whose eyes are made of pearl, meaning she is blind. Not only is she blind, but she doesn’t talk. Her parents, Rajah and Rani, are desperate to hear their daughter speak and offer a handsome reward to anyone who can make her talk. People travel from far and wide with little success, but it takes the skill of a tiger to unlock her voice. A beautiful, funny and poignant tale from a master storyteller.

Pamela Butchart never disappoints and, in her latest book, the laughs come thick ’n fast. Izzy and her friends are excited about their school camping trip, until they find out that their new, super-strict P.E teacher, Miss Moon, will be in charge. Capers-a-plenty as four friends use all their skills to survive the trip in one piece; with howling heard in the night and the discovery that Miss Moon has really hairy legs – is she secretly a werewolf? And if she is, what on Earth are they going to do about it?

SENIOR Rook by Anthony McGowan (Barrington Stoke)

Rook is the third in a series (Brock and Pike predede this), but this novella easily stands alone. When brothers Nicky and Kenny rescue a rook after it’s been attacked by a

sparrowhawk, they decide to nurse it back to life, but the boys have other worries to deal with. Interwoven into this beautifully written depiction of teen life are tips on how to avoid the school bully, as well as how to pluck up the courage to speak to a girl you like.

See How They Lie by Sue Wallman (Scholastic)

Barrington Stoke are experts in publishing fantastic stories, which are inclusive for all. They specialise in books for dyslexic and reluctant readers. Sharon Fried-Jones is a West London mum, who by day is the Head of Marketing and Digital for the charity Book Trust which inspires a love of reading in children, and by night is an aspiring children’s author with a love of clashing clothes and picture books, who longs for a good night’s sleep.

A gripping read set in Hummingbird Creek: an exclusive wellbeing retreat for troubled teens with psychiatric issues. The rules are strict, and woe-betide you break them, which is doubly difficult for Mae as her father is the founder. But, after an unintentional discovery, Mae begins to question her family life as it becomes apparent that all is far from what it seems… A real pageturning mystery, with enough sinister undertones to keep the suspense going.

£10m SCIENCE CENTRE FOR ACS HILLINGDON ACS International Schools will open a new cutting-edge £10 million Science Centre at Hillingdon in August. It incorporates seven student science and technology laboratories and a designated micro-biology unit. This latest investment is designed to enhance student and teacher collaboration in science learning, and encourage students to explore the realms of scientific research. The project is part of a series of multi-millionpound investment across ACS International Schools’ three UK campuses in Surrey and Greater London. This has included the creation of a state-of-the-art Sports Centre at ACS Egham, a brand new Performing Arts Centre at ACS Cobham and, due for completion this summer, a new boarding house at ACS Cobham. Fergus Rose, Advancement Director at ACS International Schools, commented: “The investment reflects our commitment to 34 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

providing a full and future-focused education with cutting edge facilities for teaching and learning. Anyone interested in a world class international education for their child is invited to experience our world class facilities at our forthcoming open days in February and March.”

PEOPLE

WHO IS? NOYA BEBAWI FOUNDER OF BEANIE & BEAR

Describe yourself in three words Fiery, Creative, Obsessive How did Beanie & Gear begin? It all began with my daughter (Beanie) and my son (Bear). When they were out of swimming nappies, I struggled to find swimwear that I really loved. We were lucky enough to be able to spend August at my mum’s in Spain. By the end of that month everything was saggy and faded. I decided to see if I could do better. What’s a typical day for you? School days start with the typically hectic hustle and bustle of getting two people off to school, and my husband off to work. I normally treat myself to a long walk with our dog, Buddy, after that and gear myself up for the rest of the day. I could be working on new designs, discussing samples for new lines, sending out orders or dealing with the admin that comes with running a business. I look forward to the admin less than the rest, but I get a kick out of what I do. Who inspires you? The people who really inspire me are my family. Antony’s calm and diplomatic approach to life, and innate sense of what is right and good, anchors me and makes me feel like I can do it. Our children’s innocence and energy instils in me a need and a desire to do and to better. 50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

What’s the best piece of advice you’ve been given?

That which does not kill us makes us stronger and mistakes are fine so long as you learn from them! What would you take to a desert island? An endless supply of great books! I love to read but I realise that an endless supply might not really be compatible with the desert island thing. I guess a kindle would do the trick, but then you would need electricity. Aaargh. Some great sunglasses... Where’s your favourite spot in London? Dulwich Park or Brockwell Park have become firm favourites since we added a dog to the equation. I love that you can find peace and green in the middle of what is generally a very hectic city. Being outside and watching the seasons change is amazing. I grew up in Hong Kong and the seasons weren’t nearly so dramatic there. Where’s your favourity holiday spot? Our best holiday, hands down, was at the Six Senses in the Maldives. It was the epitome of barefoot luxury. Ibiza is also a firm favourite. Obviously, it was quite a different experience before kids, but it’s become a very special family escape and we keep going back for more. What’s your biggest luxury? The places we get to visit for our photoshoots. We decided

that we wanted to showcase the brand through our family - our kids doing most of the modelling and my husband, who’s a keen photographer, taking the pictures. What we save on hiring people to create images for us, we put towards getting ourselves out to an amazing location so we get a look book and a holiday! What’s next for Beanie & Bear?

We have some exciting collaborations in the pipeline and they may see us expanding beyond swimwear. In the more immediate future, I am busy finalising the next collection. There will be a couple of new products joining the range and of course lots of great new prints. www.beanieandbear.com

The little picture At Winkworth, we never stop searching for the very best for you. We ask lots of questions, listen to what you really want and discover all sorts of wonderful things to show you. We know our local areas like the back of our hands and recognise the tiny things that make a
