CHRISTMAS WELCOME

S

ome of the best fun I’ve ever had is on a skiing holiday. Sun, snow, breathtaking scenery, friends, fondu and vin chaud. But what about throwing kids into the mix? It’s a slightly different affair and one that can

test the patience of a saint. That’s why City Kids has asked the country’s leading snow holiday experts for their top tips for an enjoyable family ski trip. Also in this issue, Bev Turner reflects on the last 12 months and tells us her experiences of starting a new business. We also launch City Kids Style, a collaboration with Roxzann Weston, with her guide to this season’s fashion trends. If you’re stuck for Christmas gifts, we have something for all ages and interests from the traditional to the high tech - keep your eyes peeled for a discount at JoJo Maman Bebe. Jo Pratt is on hand with some quick and easy festive treats, plus, we have schools and nurseries news, an updated directory and some wonderful books reviewed by Sharon Fried-Jones. And as if that wasn’t enough, our What’s On guide should spread some Christmas cheer and keep you going well into 2015. Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Ghost tours Bubbly, cake and a great blowdry A small boutique salon on Devonshire Road is quietly making a big name for itself. Recently awarded runners-up: Hairdressing Salon of the Year in the London Lifestyle Awards, it left Herschesons and Aveda in its wake. The Parlour is a blow dry and bohemian braid bar with a difference.

Join us for a fun, spooky evening at Hampton Court Palace

You want afternoon tea with your up-do - check. You want a cocktail with your curls - no problem; cake with your chignon, or a coke float alongside your Bridget Bardot - of course. And you want to come with friends - please do.

Suitable for 8–14 year olds To book, call 0844 482 7777 or visit hrp.org.uk/hamptoncourtpalace

The Parlour is all about socialising, having fun, and ultimately, great, affordable hairstyling. For as little as £20 you can walk out feeling and looking fantastic with a blow dry that will last for days. And don’t tell us you’re too busy; the transformation from frazzled mum to screen siren takes less than 45 minutes.

Meet Santa and his reindeer and take a husky sleigh ride!

While the girls are racking up awards and magazine features for their vintage styling, The Parlour is of the moment. They can do everything, from their Friday bombshell blowouts (£20) to deep conditioning Davines treatments and massages (£35) and an express Trim and Tidy with blow dry (£30). And their colouring experts know how to fix those faded tresses. Highlights, trim, 10 minute head massage and a blow dry; all for £100. Each day there’s a different deal to suit. The Parlour’s girly atmosphere is a reflection of its American heart and soul. Owner, Jacqueline Fletcher, is Boston-born, and her experiences of overpriced salons and disappointing ‘dos led her to create a cosy, friendly, neighbourhood salon with high standards and good service.

I

Our evenings are always fun; we sit around a candle-lit table, with booze for the blokes (funny how a cold beer helps them ask questions!), and the mood is always light, even when we’re discussing matters that might make the hardiest folk wince.

n Plato’s time, “Necessity” was “the mother of invention.” Today, we can only conclude, “Mothers are the masters of reinvention.” We have to be. We leave education, having out-performed the boys, rise up the ‘career ladder,’ become a mum and find ourselves blind-sided by emotional decisions about our personal and professional pathways. Most women I know have had to ‘reinvent’ themselves at least three times by the age of fifty. After leaving University I flounced around for two years working as a fashion model, became a sports journalist, switched to TV presenting, wrote a book about F1 racing, felt lost, had another baby, re-trained as a psychotherapist, wrote another book, looked after my husband, rower-adventurer James Cracknell who was injured on his bicycle, had another baby, wrote another book, became a features writer at The Daily Telegraph and finally – at the age of 40 – after ten years side lining in campaigning and writing about women’s birth experiences, got the chance to set up my own ante-natal course in my beloved Chiswick. ‘The Blooming Bunch’ is one-year-old this December and, like a proud but knackered parent, it’s a fitting milestone on which to reflect and look forward to 2015. It was while interviewing Maggie Bolger – mother of four and owner of Maggie & Rose – that the idea was born: she had the premises to host ante-natal classes; I had the passion, knowledge and access to the country’s top experts. It was all going to be so easy! Of course, anyone who has set up a new venture will tell you that it is never easy. You must decide who does what, when and how. Websites need building, accounts need keeping and targets need setting, but all of that is irrelevant if people don’t know about your business 14 CITY KIDS

Beverley Turner takes time out to reflect on a busy twelve months, and looks forward to an exciting year ahead. and the phone never rings! We began tentatively, providing an entire eight session course without charging a penny so that we could focus on how best to provide a great experience for the women and get objective feedback. I’d recruited some of the most-respected midwives in the country, including Sheena Byrom OBE and Pam Wild (regularly credited by TV Presenter Davina McCall for her three positive births), as well as, Obstetrician Donald Gibb and Natal Hypnotherapy creator Maggie Howell. I was also keen to use local talents in the form of Physiotherapist Alan Watson, Nutritionist Ruth Wood and trainer Jade Rodham of The Hogarth Gym. Apparently, we were doing something right as word started to spread and – thank god – the enquiry emails started to arrive. The beauty of The Blooming Bunch is that we’re flexible and respond to every group’s needs; partners are now welcome at every session. Chiswick dads – it seems - are wonderfully hands-on!

We now organise more social gatherings outside of the courses, so all bumps and babies will soon be enjoying a Christmas coffee morning in December. Firm friendships are being made, and with constant access to the midwives, our couples report feeling incredibly well looked-after and never alone. Despite what TV adverts would like us to think, being pregnant and having a baby can be frightening, isolating and, of course, exhausting. But knowledge is power. Friendships with like-minded new mums are invaluable. And a good birth – whatever that means for each individual woman, be it a home water-birth or an elective section - sets you up for motherhood on the best possible footing. Next year, we will continue to grow and offer more couples more excitement, fun and support as they prepare to meet their babies. With a business like ours, word-ofmouth is everything and I’m immensely grateful to the new-mums who are now sending so many people our way. Reinventing ourselves is never easy and it’s rarely for the faint-hearted, but let’s face it – nothing is tougher than being a parent. If we can do that, we can do anything.

Travel

Whether you’re an experienced skier, or a first-timer, taking the family on a skiing holiday is a whole new ball game. Frayed tempers and unhappy children can quickly overshadow a day on the slopes. So, in order to maintain calm this winter, CITY KIDS has some words from the wise.

SKIOLOGY – www.skiology.co.uk

ESPRIT SKI – www.espritski.com

DOMINIC TURNER

MOIRA CLARKE

Some of the best advice for family skiing is the oldest advice, location, location, location. Choose well and you can quickly and easily pop back to check on child care/grand parents/switch child care/try a different activity. Get it wrong and you will have to get a bus/horse drawn sleigh/train, in a stress, or with a child who is having a major sense of humour failure. One of our guests always brings his gym bag to carry the kids’ skis. He has three kids and carrying them all without the bag would be a nightmare. He simply leaves the bag at the ski school when he drops them off and then picks the bag up with the kids at the end of their lesson.

When considering taking the children skiing: are they gung-ho enough to give it a go? Is your baby or toddler sociable enough to join a nursery for the week? Are you, as parents, able to let them get on with it? Many holiday packages offer children’s ski classes but it is important to know whether or not the classes are just the local ski school’s or if the operator has any special arrangements. Some operators just book children into the local classes, which may then have anything up to 16 children in them and be taught in the local language!

VIP SKI - www.vip-chalets.com ANDY STURT

“If you are restricted to travelling in the school holidays Easter is a great time in the season to ski with kids. It’s generally warmer so children don’t get as cold, whilst snow conditions are still fantastic and the resorts tend to be quieter than February half term. This year the Easter holiday falls on a different week to the French school holidays so not only will resorts and slopes be less busy but British children are more likely to be in ski lessons with other Brits. It can also be more affordable to ski at Easter than at other peak dates during the season.”

16 CITY KIDS

CAMEL SNOW – www.camelsnow.com RORY HODDELL

Picking the right resort is crucial. From experience we feel that once a child hits 3 to 4 years old they are ready for the first trip, if they want to! Ski schools across the Alps have improved greatly over the years. Children to experience ski school in the mornings and then have the incentive to ski with the adults in the afternoon. This means that the parents have the chance to ski themselves, and still be back by lunchtime to pick the kids up. The most important aspect is to make sure that there is adequate childcare, a good range of nonskiing activities and still enough that parents don’t feel like they are sacrificing their ski trip.

PT SKI – www.ptski.com

Skiplex launches winter season

SARAH PALMER-TOMPKINSON

Skiing with children can often feel like a vicarious holiday and parents can have to manage their expectations with regard to their own skiing. The most important thing is to remember to make it fun. An hour making the perfect snowman with dad can provide great excitement for a child and leaves lasting positive memories. If you have teenagers, consider how they are going to meet others so they have someone who they can meet for a hot chocolate. Where does the après-ski action tend to centre, and how far away is that from your proposed accommodation? If you have non-skiers what are they going to do? And when the time comes to leave ski school behind and hit the slopes together, make sure that you know where you are going – nothing turns the experience sour like getting lost at 4pm and worrying you might miss the last lift back to the resort!

If you want to brush up on your technique, build up stamina before hitting the slopes, or you want to introduce your children to skiing, then head over to Skiplex at Dukes Meadows. Sessions are led by qualified instructors who can offer real time feed back, and with a giant mirror at the base of the slope, skiers can see their progress immediately. Children learn and progress up to eight times faster than in any other snow sport environment thanks to the unique facilities and low child to coach ratio.

SCOTT DUNN – www.scottdunn.com

Patrick Taylor, CEO of Skiplex adds: “Our sessions offer nonstop skiing and boarding without wasting time queuing for lifts or being restricted by slope length.”

KIRSTY EDWARDS

Don’t get too hung up in terms of which resorts have the best runs. As beginners, children don’t need too much space or variety and all resorts have nursery slopes. As they progress, most smalls tend to be pretty fearless and will probably be less put off by the red (or under graded blue) run home than you will. Two pairs of gloves mean you will have a spare dry pair for tobogganing in the evening or the next day in case you forget to put them on the radiator. Remember that layering is the best way to keep children warm in the snow. Don’t forget to pack vests, long sleeved t-shirts, light fleeces and leggings. Snow boots or wellies with good grip are a must for playing in the snow. For young skiers, goggles are great as they are more comfortable than wearing sunglasses (especially under ski helmets) and smalls struggle to take them off, so they stay on!

CRYSTAL SKI – www.crystalski.co.uk HELEN PENN

A large ski resort can be quite daunting. First time families tend to suit a resort that is easy to navigate their way around. It also makes it easy when trying to meet up for lunch. A combination of a great ski school and plenty of off the slopes activities always go down brilliantly with families.

Skiplex is also available for children’s parties, plus there are offers for schools preparing for annual ski trips. Skiplex has three venues in Chiswick, Reading and Basingstoke.

For me the most important aspect of a family skiing holiday is to relax and enjoy yourselves. It’s a family holiday in a beautiful environment not a test of endurance! Make things as easy as possible by travelling with a true family specialist and both parents and children will have the times of their lives.

For cool kids who want to ride their deck shool.

Wellness Skiing holiday

After Christmas indulgences comes the New Year promise of getting fit and generally living healthier. With that in mind, Rebekah Hall weighs up some of the options available to us in Bootcamp vs Gym. Tally up time spent on kids, work, laundry, football practice, ballet lessons and homework; there are pitiful hours left in the week for ourselves, let alone exercise. We get it. Exercise is good for you and necessary to a person’s health. But finding the NHS’s recommended 150 minutes per week for moderate to intense aerobic exercise, plus two or more days of strength training that works all major muscle groups, is challenging to say the least. Statistically speaking, we are a lazy bunch. According to the Physical Activity Statistics 2012 report by the British Heart Foundation, less than half of all adults in the UK meet the government exercise recommendation. In 2008, 56 percent of women in England did not spend time doing any sport or exercise. Worryingly, the report also states that, as our children get older, their exercise decreases as they move into adolescence and then early adulthood. Perhaps of most concern, few girls aged 11 to 15 years meet the recommended physical activity levels. With all that in mind, what is an effective way to exercise given our harried schedules? On most greens in West London, there are several boot camps offering training sessions. Exercising in all weather conditions may not be for everyone, but let’s face it, you will achieve results. It combines all recommended exercises by working every major muscle group plus added cardio. So if your time is questionable, Boot Camp is an efficient answer. Rose Mulligan has been the owner of Chiswick Boot Camp for five years and has many success stories. For example, she tells of one, almost 50 year old, member who had never exercised outside of the tennis court. This member had never run or done any type of body weight program and, after a year of boot camp training, she ran the New York Marathon. There was also a man, who had such high cholesterol, his doctor ordered him to exercise or else. Once given the go-ahead for boot camp training by his doctor, his first attempts

at jumping left him extremely short of breath. Today, he has lost a couple of stones and comfortably runs around the common. But what about exercising in the wet, muddy, cold English weather? Studies show there are significant benefits from exercising outdoors, even just from brisk walking. “Everyone is quickly won over by the results, camaraderie, family friendly environment and taking in the fresh air,” says Mulligan. “Members motivate each other and are a team and family.” If you still cannot bear to feel the grass under your feet, then head to the mud-free doors of a local gym. The benefit of a gym membership is the access to many forms of exercise, including biking, swimming, running, weight training and a whole host of classes. Luke Charlton is the general manager of Everyone Active Acton Centre which has an award-winning swimming scheme for both adults and children. Also, members can opt for an individual or group induction, depending on their confidence level, where they are given guidance on exercise equipment such as power plates, Trixter exercise bikes and multifunctional machines. For those who desire a more customised, goal-orientated training session, personal trainers are available. They also specially target 11 to 15 year olds who are the age group least enthused about sport or exercise. “Camaraderie is a large part of our gym environment,” Charlton says. “Our staff are friendly and we offer small group training for six to eight people. Most gyms don’t have this type of environment.” Charlton and his staff work hard to educate members so that, when they come to the gym, they make the most of their workouts and not simply clock in two hours on the treadmill. Instead, they are encouraged to undertake short, effective workouts by using the step-up plate, suspension trainer or ‘race through London’ on an interactive Trixter bike. Whether training outside in the fresh air at boot camp or working out at the gym, it is important for parents and children alike to get moving. Now!

Christmas is the perfect time of year to treat the young people in your life with a book. But with so many out there, how do you choose? by Sharon Fried-Jones Fear not, the book elf (um me) is here to help. Dog on Stilts by James Thorp and Angus Mackinnon (Digital Leaf).

LITTLE KIDS PRE-SCHOOLERS A traditional Christmas verse, that has been given a modern twist, is The Twelve Days of Christmas (Little Tiger). Beautifully illustrated by Britta Teckentrup, this is a peep-through picture book which is perfect for preschoolers and their curious little fingers. Using cut-outs, each page becomes more elaborate with plenty for a child to count and explore. And, if you’re feeling fine of voice, you can warble along too. With a smattering of gold sprinkled throughout the pictures, it feels festive without being twee, but the overall effect is stunning. Teckentrup’s folk-style illustrations make this a timeless classic.

In our selfie-obsessed world, nobody wants to be deemed ordinary; and the same can be said for the four-legged star of this book, Mr Medium Dog.

Mackinnon’s psychedelic illustrations are a feast for the eyes and the story shows that, ultimately, it’s all about being yourself and not following the crowd.

BIG KIDS Moone Boy: The Blunder Years By Chris O’Dowd & Nick V. Murphy (Macmillan). It’s not easy being the only boy in a family of girls, getting bullied and stressing about being an alter boy. But, if anyone can make that set of circumstances funny, it’s Chris O’Dowd and Nick V. Murphy. The pair are the creators behind Sky 1’s Emmy award-winning Moone Boy; the semi-autobiographical comedy based on O’Dowd’s

All sounds straightforward, except Loopy isn’t going to depart that easily… There’s plenty to laugh about on every page as the gags come thick and fast. Illustrations by Cartoon Saloon bring Martin’s woes to life, while O’Dowd and Murphy capture the essence of childhood brilliantly, especially with their on-going definitions of the various words used by Martin, such as Readybix which is a puddle of sawdust, oats and tears pretending to be breakfast cereal.

NumberWorks’nWords has launched a new centre in Chiswick. Led by New Zealander, Jason Hobbs, the courses provide face-to-face, individualised tuition in numeracy and literacy. The English programme starts with new readers and continues to a reading age of 12, while the maths programme covers Reception to GCSE with a strong emphasis on numeracy strategies. Students work at their own pace during each one-hour, weekly session and records are kept on their progress. Jason was a teacher at Notting Hill and Ealing High School before embarking on his new venture. And if you take this issue of City Kids Magazine to the centre, you will get an extra lesson free!

ACTIVE AND LEARNING

Children attending Active Learning were recently treated to an afternoon’s coaching by British and Irish Rugby Lions Legends Ben Clarke and Rob Henderson. RFU coaches also joined the international stars and gave the children goody bags and certificates for their efforts. The day was organised as part of Active Learning’s commitment to promote the importance of sport and outdoor play within the curriculum. The day was such a success that Ben and Rob have very kindly agreed to repeat the event next summer for children attending the group’s nurseries in Chiswick, Kingston and Fulham.

Research by tuition provider Explore Learning reveals that nearly 70% of parents have said they are totally unaware of curriculum changes that came into play this term. For most children, the new curriculum will be much more challenging, with many concepts being introduced earlier than previously. Explore Learning also found that 72% of parents worry that British children aren’t leading the field in standards of education. In learning, the priority is to maintain a child’s confidence and positivity; it makes such a powerful difference to a child’s success in education. Explore Learning advise all parents to consult their teachers first if they have any concerns. Their 98 nationwide centres can offer further support in new topic areas at a pace and level children are comfortable with. Every Explore Learning centre offers a free trial session.

NEW NURSERY

The Chiswick Kindergarten, which opened its doors in September, has been running twice-weekly toddler groups. The £5 sessions on Mondays and Wednesdays have proved very popular and help to make the children’s transition into their nursery much easier as they become familiar with the environment and the teachers. They also learn to socialise and play with other children. The Chiswick Kindergarten has wellestablished sister schools in Knightsbridge and Kensington and is continuing to welcome new registrations.

Christmas Recipes by Jo Pratt

WHITE CHOCOLATE, CRANBERRY AND WALNUT BROWNIES Chocolate Brownies are my favourtite sweet treat which can have all sorts of flavours added depending on preference or the time of year. These I have pimped up with some Christmasness using chunks of white chocolate, tangy cranberries and crunchy walnuts.

MAKES ABOUT 20 BROWNIES 200g unsalted butter 200g dark chocolate (70% cocoa solids), chopped 3 large eggs 300g granulated sugar 2 teaspoons vanilla extract 125g plain flour a pinch of salt 100g white chocolate, cut into chunks 100g dried cranberries 100g walnut pieces

CRANBERRY, ORANGE AND PECAN PIES These are fabulous and very simple alternative to mince pies.

MAKES 12

375g shortcrust pastry flour for dusting 275g fine cut orange marmalade 75g pecan nuts, finely chopped 75g dried cranberries 2 tbsp brandy, Gran Marnier, whisky or orange juice 1 egg, beaten, for brushing icing sugar for dusting

YOU WILL ALSO NEED

1non-stick patty tin + 6cm and 7cm plain or fluted pastry cutters + mini Christmas pastry cutters i.e stars, holly leaf or Christmas trees

Preheat the oven to 180ºC/fan 160ºC/gas 4. Grease and line a 20cm x 30cm (approx) baking tin, 3 - 4cm deep with greaseproof or parchment paper. Melt the butter and the dark chocolate either in a bowl over a pan of simmering water or gently in the microwave. With an electric hand whisk, beat together the eggs, sugar and vanilla extract until they are lovely and thick and creamy. Mix in the melted chocolate and butter. Finally, stir in the flour, salt, white chocolate, cranberries and walnuts. Pour into the baking tin and cook for about 25 minutes until the top is cracking and the centre is just set. Leave to cool in the tin for about 20 minutes before cutting into squares. Serve warm or, if you can resist leaving them, cold.

Pre-heat the oven to 200C/180C fan ovens/Gas Mark 6 Dust your worktop with a little flour and thinly roll out the pastry. Using the 7cm pastry cutter, cut 12 disks from the pastry and lightly press them into the tins to fit neatly in the holes. Make the filling by mixing together the marmalade, pecans, cranberries and liqueur. Divide between the pastry cases – it’ll be about 1 tbsp in each one. Using the 6cm pastry cutter cut out 12 disks from the remaining pastry. With your Christmas cutter, cut out a shape from the centre of the pastry disks. Sit the disks on top of the pies and gently press to seal. Brush the tops with the beaten egg and bake in the oven for about 12-15 minutes until golden. The mini shapes can either be thrown away or you could brush them with the beaten egg and dust heavily with icing sugar before baking until golden. Once the pies are cooked, leave in the tins for 5 minutes and then carefully transfer the pies onto a wire rack, dust with icing sugar and serve warm or leave to cool.
