WELCOME
I
t’s hard to believe that a cover shoot could end in a bloody nose! Who knew that birthday cake could be such a dangerous weapon in a food fight? Just one of the many and varied things I’ve learned in the past year as City Kids Magazine
turns one. No time for speeches here, but I really couldn’t have done it without the many contributors to the magazine who shared my vision for a new, relevant and cool family guide. THANK YOU! It’s not all about City Kids this issue - we’re celebrating a number of things, including sport. The Super Saturday of Sport returns to West London in July and we praise the dedication and commitment of one local woman who delivers it (p10). We have an exclusive look at one of Jo Pratt’s recipes from her new book In The Mood for Healthy Food, ahead of publication in July. It’s “Party Time in the Sun” in Style (p19), plus we champion niche, small businesses in our new Boutique (p40). And don’t miss Beverley Turner’s take on exercise for mums both pre and post

ith the celebrations and euphoria of the London 2012 Olympic Games ceding ground to questions over a huge budget and lack of legacy, one woman in West London
was busy hatching a plan. Kirsten Lonsdale, an Aussie and mother of two, had just lost her job and suddenly felt a long way from home. Little did she know that she was a just about to launch one of the biggest community sports events in West London. “I was in a place where I felt I had lost my career. I was made redundant from the BBC, I had kids, it felt like I wasn’t in a country that I wanted to be in – I was at a crisis point. So I did this personal development course and from that weekend I stopped making excuses about why my life was so sh*t and I didn’t have time for anything because of the kids.”

A lack of physical activity in our children’s lives has never been a more important topic. As a result, parents and carers are turning to sports clubs like The Little Foxes Club. Founded in 2007, the club provides a safe sporting environment with an emphasis on having fun and developing a love of sport that can be carried through to adulthood. Classes follow a tailored curriculum for the overall physical development of boys and girls from 18 months to 12 years old. Coaches create weekly session plans to keep children engaged, monitoring development from basic motor skills to competitive game play. Coaches are selected not only for their sporting merits but also for their natural ability to connect with children and their families. Off the sports field, the focus on excellent customer service continues with a Customer Relations Team, available seven days a week to assist in enquiries and booking classes, holiday camps or private coaching. As well as offering a physical education vital for a healthy lifestyle, the Little Foxes experience also teaches children valuable social and leadership skills.
After setting up and managing one of the largest private swimming schools at the Riverside Club London, Christian Kenny along with his business partner Christopher Whitworth embarked on a mission to deliver first class swimming coaching for babies and children throughout West and Central London. Sports Generation now delivers swimming lessons to over 1000 babies and children on a weekly basis in Chiswick, Richmond and Wimbledon. Classes are kept small, with a coach to child ratio of 1:4 in all non-swimmer and beginner classes. Lessons can begin with babies as young as three months. The emphasis is on fun - it is Christian and Christopher’s mission to get their clients’ children to become confident and happy swimmers with excellent technique as soon as possible. As well as term-time teaching, Sports Generation offers Holiday Crash Courses for 3-10 year olds. To enquire or make a booking email info@sportsgeneration.co.uk or call 020 8994 2616

THE PARK CLUB
WILL TO WIN
Children have an endless supply of energy and a natural desire to conquer the world. So how can you harness that sense of wonderment and adventure?
Set in 27 acres of stunning park and woodland in West London, The Park Club is renowned as a family club where parents are free to exercise or relax, confident in the knowledge that their children are in safe hands. Whether in our outstanding crèche or coached, trained or entertained by our expert coaches after school or in the holidays – we will let them shine!
This year Will to Win (WTW) is celebrating 20 years of delivering community sport! Will to Win was created to improve tennis and sports facilities in public parks and enable year round play for all ages and abilities. We are proud that Chiswick House Gardens was the first centre we opened in 1995.
The Little Gym helps children build the confidence and skills needed at each stage of childhood. Each week, structured classes and our unique learning environment will create opportunities for your child to try new things and build self-confidence. As your child grows and develops new physical skills, you will see noticeable positive differences with each new achievement, but your child will simply see The Little Gym as a place to have fun, laugh and make new friends. We offer classes for babies as young as 4 months to children up to the age of 12 years old in our purpose build facility. Members and Non-members can enjoy our holiday clubs and Birthday parties. Call us on 0208 994 3729 or email us Chiswick@thelittlegym.eu
As well as an incredible state of the art gym, indoor and outdoor swimming and amazing tennis facilities for adults, there are giant indoor and outdoor adventure play areas for kids, including our renowned bouncing pillow and acres of green space for children to explore and have fun within after school. With nanny access & family restaurants, the Park Club is perfect for parents who want a safe haven for their children where they can burn off their excess energy after school and in the holidays.

you let a nine-year-old like Toby loose on 150 connected trampolines at Oxygen Freejumping, opening this July. Even though Toby’s probably not impressed by the numbers, this park is huge — almost 2,445 square metres plus there’s 11 metres of air for him to explore above the trampolines. Toby often bring friends along to freejump, but he’s at an age where he doesn’t mind mum, dad and even his highly competitive brother coming along during a family bounce session.

RECIPE BY JO PRATT STYLE They say that big things come in small packages and one of the ingredients in this recipe certainly lives up to the saying. Mung beans are said to defend us against cancers, obesity, cardiovascular disease and diabetes – they also taste amazing when combined with spicy chicken, tangy lime and other types of bean. This is a recipe you’ll turn to again and again for many reasons – it’s the Swiss Army knife of everyday dishes.
CAJUN CHICKEN WITH BEANS AND GREENS SALAD SERVES 4 PREPARATION TIME 20 minutes, plus overnight soaking COOKING TIME 20 - 25 minutes FOR THE CHICKEN 1 tbsp olive oil 2 garlic cloves, crushed 1 tsp paprika 1/2
tsp cayenne pepper
1 tsp dried oregano 4 skinless chicken breasts sea salt and freshly ground black pepper FOR THE BEANS AND GREENS SALAD 60g / 4oz / 1/3 cup dried mung beans, soaked in cold water overnight in the fridge juice and zest of 1 lime 1 green chilli, deseeded and finely chopped
1. To make the Cajun spice, mix together the olive oil, garlic, paprika, cayenne pepper and oregano in a large mixing bowl. Add a good pinch of salt and some pepper. 2. Slash each chicken breast 3–4 times with a sharp knife. Add to the Cajun spices and mix thoroughly to coat the chicken in the spices. Set aside to marinate for at least 30 minutes, or overnight is fine if you want to prepare the chicken when you soak the mung beans. 3. Meanwhile, bring a saucepan of water to the boil over a medium-high heat, and add the mung beans. Once simmering, reduce the heat to medium and cook for 10–15

... EXERCISE
I
have a recurring nightmare in which I’m at The London Marathon start line wearing high heels, having done not one day of training. I look around, panicked by the focused faces and sinewy bodies in vests that won’t chaff nipples, and I know I’m just not ready for the many hours of pain.
“Giving birth will probably be the toughest workout you ever do.” For countless women, labour is like this: scary and unwelcome. Giving birth will probably be the toughest workout you ever do (even if you have a Caesarean birth; the physicality of recovery is a medal-worthy challenge), so it’s vital to get match-fit – both mentally and physically. Yes, exercise can be a bit dull and yes, it’s tempting to collapse with a cake when you’re so tired that crowd surfing at a Metallica concert sounds like an opportunity to take a nap. But c’mon ladies, it’s your one and only body at stake here, so get moving. Pregnancy, however, is not the time to start rock-climbing or gymnastics – unless they are already your favoured route to fitness. Stick to what you know and aim to comfortably hold a conversation while moving. In fact, make talking an integral part of your regime as you’ll never have an uninterrupted conversation again once your baby arrives and you eat every meal standing up. We are blessed with green spaces in West London, so grab a gossipy mate and do a 60-minute stride round Richmond Park or pace a few laps of Chiswick House (avoiding the dog poo). Swimming is less conducive to conversation, unless your name is Ariel, but it’s great for pregnancy and gets baby into a good position. Breaststroke arms keep your precious bosom toned but breaststroke leg-kick can aggravate your pelvic bones, so keep your legs together (if only someone had told you that nine months ago …). For the first time in your life, you should also factor pelvic health into your weekly regime. Only those with a highly sophisticated sense of humour find peeing their pants at the school gates funny. I promise you: most mothers are forced to put their trampolining 18 CITY KIDS

Physiotherapist, Hannah Cooksey of Bodies Under Construction, is the font of all knowledge on keeping your ninky-nonk perky. Her advice includes my favourite tip: “Imagine picking up a pea from a chair with your vagina.” Go on. Do it now. Well done. And just think – wouldn’t demonstrating that particular skill at tea time be a great way to get the kids to shut up when they won’t eat their damn peas? Being fit for birth also means you’re likely to be in better shape to lug, lift and swing your baby (and its paraphernalia) around once it arrives. Nobody tells you how physically demanding it can be to care for a newborn. And once they start crawling, well, you might as well sign them up for The Little Gym as soon as the cord’s cut as their reserves of energy will astound you. Besides, there isn’t a parent alive who doesn’t delight in that moment when you realise your child has Olympic-gold potential on the first glimpse of a competent forward roll. Oh and your child will love nothing more than you doing it too. Invest in a good sports bra such as the Bravissimo Shock Absorber. If this is your first pregnancy, savour the end of the day when you take off your new bra and there isn’t random shit in there like fairy stickers, Lego and that plastic orange sand from the play area at Kew Gardens. Once your bump feels like it needs a little extra support, you might want to buy a pair of maternity exercise leggings from fittamamma.com. Then look forward to the day they don’t fit you anymore. Marathons may be bloody, painful and defy the limits of the human body, but anyone who has run one will tell you that there is no feeling of exhilaration quite like it and life is never quite the same again. Sound familiar? Beverley Turner runs www.thebloomingbunch.co.uk and hosts Sunday Mornings on LBC Radio at 10am. BOOK REVIEW PRE-SCHOOLERS
BIG KIDS Nina, a pooch with a penchant for fine living and even finer dining. Jules is used to taking her dogs George and Nina to restaurants, but after an unfortunate episode with a steak, George has to stay at home. So when a restaurant manager calls time on doggy dining – Nina’s nose is put out of joint and she’s forced to stay outside tied to a lamppost, until Jules finds a cunning way to ensure she never wants to eat out again …
Jules and Nina Dine Out by Anita Pouroulis and illustrated by Agata Krawczyk (Digital Leaf)
A humourous tale that is made even more contemporary by Agata Krawczyk’s zesty illustrations.
This book is just too cute. Never mind spoilt children, this story focuses on a spoilt dog! Meet
A pawsome read.
PRE-SCHOOLERS getting herself into all kinds of scrapes due to her invisible cat Squishy McFluff.
Squishy McFluff The Invisible Cat Meets Mad Nana Dot by Pip Jones In the latest book in this delightful series, we see the very funny and mischievous Ava
In this tale, Ava has to stay with Nana Dot and that’s where her sleepover turns into a misadventure. Beautifully illustrated by Ella Okstad, who makes the story really come to life with her fresh and colourful style, young readers will enjoy the mishaps ‘caused’ by Squishy and competent readers can give this a go themselves. Written in rhyme, parents will also find this book a joy to read and it won’t have them sticking it at the bottom of the pile.
LITTLE KIDS trot down to your local bookstore and pick up the 25th adventure of Dirty Bertie. He’s the ‘boy with nose-pickingly disgusting habits’ and frankly the situations he finds himself in are so funny that I was LOL’ing away to myself, and that was before I had even read them to my children.
Dirty Bertie: Jackpot! by Alan MacDonald & Illustrated by David Roberts (Stripes) Want the laughs to come thick and fast, then
20 CITY KIDS
In the three stories featured in this book, his gran wins the lottery, a leaving do for a teacher goes catastrophically wrong and he encounters a demon dolly. Brilliantly written, fans of Horrid Henry will also enjoy this series and David Roberts’ spot on illustrations capture the Bertie’s mayhem perfectly.
True Face by Siobhan Curham If there was ever a book that I would have loved to have read when I was a teenager, it would have been True Face by Siobhan Curham (Faber & Faber). The awardwinning writer has penned ‘an inspirational guide to letting your true self shine’ and boy does it get straight to the heart of being the real you in a self-obsessed world. This book doesn’t preach, but the positive message shines like a beacon and the practical advice will help any young adult begin a journey of self discovery. Now before you think this is all tree hugging, you’re wrong – it’s only New Age in the sense that we are all living in a new age of technology. With the advent of social media young people today are leading very public lives, and with that comes increasing pressure. Split into three parts, Curham covers all the big topics, including how to unearth your star qualities, how to be confident with your body image and dating and love. Every chapter starts with the word ‘true’ to drive home the message of being you true yourself. Mixed with case studies and episodes of Siobhan’s own life as rebellious teen (her parents’ divorce had a huge impact), it’s one that is honest about the state of growing up today. But it’s Curham’s style that makes this book so accessible and although it is aimed more at young women, the ethos applies to both sexes. True Face isn’t just a book, it’s a movement. An absolute must-have for teenagers AND their parents. EDUCATION
SCHOOL CHOICES education, education, education a priority ahead of the 1997 General Election, albeit a topic not much talked about in recent campaigning. But, it’s always a burning issue in this aspirational part of West London. The area is blessed with some of the best private schools in the country, but with that comes competition for places, and an overwhelming sense of fear and paranoia in parents. We hear head teachers say they want natural talent, discourage tutoring and can spot a coached child a mile off. But can we, as parents, afford to take that advice when everyone else’s child seems to be gaining an advantage with tutoring from the

SALT WATER
LAZY FRANCIS
Salt-Water sandals is an American heritage brand that has been a summer staple since 1943. Available in a vast array of styles and colours, all the sandals are leather, hand stitched and water resistant. They can even be put through the washing machine on a cold and gentle wash.
Fairy tale meets street style at Lazy Francis, where cartoon and superhero prints are banned, replaced by elegant and unique clothes and accessories for girls, boys and their mums! Collections include coats, jackets, skirts, dresses, shorts, trousers and blouses.
Salt-Water Originals go up to adult sizes and are defined by their tough rubber sole, whilst the kids Sun-San range is built upon a more spongy base. Both ranges have 100% leather uppers and breathable linings and they can all be worn in water making them the perfect summer sandal.
This summer’s Bright and Brave capsule collection embraces individuality and sophistication, using luxurious silks and viscose fabrics made by the best French and Italian manufacturers. The result is playful and bold without taking itself too seriously.
Worn by A-listers like Kate & Lily Moss, Sienna Miller and celeb kids Suri Cruise, Matilda Ledger & Shiloh Jolie Pitt these sandals have a pedigree following as well as an authentic heritage.
Watch out this autumn for the release of the new boys’ line which will feature shirts and suits as well as items for a more casual look. All the clothes are made in Europe with an emphasis on quality and comfort with cotton linings under every piece to ensure a soft touch to the skin.

PETIT TRIBE
LUXURY CHILDRENSWEAR WITH AN AFRICAN HEART
Petit Tribe is a new luxury childrenswear label founded by Nigerian born Olatoun Jolaoso. Almost four years ago, when pregnant with her daughter, Olatoun began thinking about starting a childrenswear collection. She was inspired by the nomadic Fulani Tribe, which she saw and connected with almost every day while growing up in the northern Nigerian state of Kaduna. The Fulani’s astonishingly vibrant tribal prints and patterns inform the design and very basis of Petit Tribe. Designed for girls and boys from newborn up to the age of 12, the brand celebrates those who are adventurous, bold and fun-loving. www.petittribe.com

shmuncki
TRADITIONAL & LUXURY BRITISH BABY CLOTHES MADE WITH STYLE shmuncki is a London-based design house founded by mum of two, Helen Walters. Her collection takes inspiration from heritage designs, teamed with colours of the season. Having two boys, she knows only too well how hard it can be to get little wrigglers in and out of various outfits, especially during nappy changing emergencies! So, she set about designing luxury baby clothing, made in Britain with comfortable, breathable fabrics. The launch range is produced in soft cotton with Liberty Art fabric trim, embodying traditional style but with up to date styling and a finish you won’t find on the high street. Also available are the the Harbour and Woodland Collections which feature reversible blankets, romper suits, hats, T-shirts and bibs. All shmuncki’s luxury baby clothing is machine washable and the poppers are nickel free.
ROCKLEY COVE
THE ‘RASHKINI’ RANGE IS A MIX AND MATCH COLLECTION OF UPF50+ BIKINIS AND RASH VESTS, AVAILABLE FOR GIRLS AGED 3-12 YEARS OLD These gorgeous, super-stylish prints are inspired by fashion trends for abstract floral and geometric designs. The bikinis come in a halter-neck style with contrasttie bottoms and a bandeau top, with either skirted or sporty short bottoms. All fabrics are high stretch, quick drying and chlorine resistant. You can mix and match bikinis with rash vests to ensure your daughters stay sunsafe, with the reassurance that all fabrics protect against up to 99 per cent of the sun’s harmful rays. Nowadays, it’s not just in the Caribbean that you’ll need UPF50+ sun protection. In recent years, Britain has seen very high UV levels in the summer, meaning a high risk of sunburn. Rash vests allow children to play in the sun without the need to worry about re-applying sun cream. And, in the case of Rockley Cove, they look great too!
In our first brand focus, we speak to JoJo Gaynor about the launch of MyLittleVIP.co.uk, a new member discount site, exclusively for little ones.
“
“The idea behind My Little VIP is to help other like-minded mums find unique and bespoke products alongside the essentials, always at a great price without the bore of too good to be true flash sales and old stock. Members access hundreds of specialist retailers showcasing thousands of products for bumps, babies and toddlers through mylittlevip.co.uk. They shop directly with the partner saving up to 30% off every time. The savings are really impressive and many members save the cost of their membership in one purchase alone. I’m loving Rockabye Baby, they have some super fun clothing for little ones; HoneyTree Publishing are wonderful for bespoke stationery, beautiful designs and excellent quality; Home Candy have a fabulous selection of contemporary homewares with a hint of playfulness.

DOTTY FOR DUNGAREES BARNES MUM ALICE ROTHSCHILD TALKS TO VICTORIA EVANS ABOUT FAMILY, FAVOURITE LONDON PL ACES AND HER NEW BUSINESS VENTURE
How was Dotty Dungarees born? Both Georgie (Parr; friend and business partner) and I grew up in dungarees in the 80s and 90s. Once we had children we thought, “dungarees are great, they’re practical”. Georgie was ordering dungarees from the States and paying crazy shipping rates so we decided to do it ourselves … with zero experience.
How did you know where to start? We called in any godfathers we’d ever had and found one that had set up a company; we went and grilled him. We then emailed questionnaires to all our friends and family and from these we came up with a design and an idea. Georgie’s out in China so our first sample was made by a Chinese lady who lives on the corner of Georgie’s street!
Did you always dream of running a business? I’ve always thought I didn’t want a 9-5 job in the office so I guess having your own business was the answer. Having kids, you definitely don’t want to be sitting in an office all day paying for childcare when your salary probably doesn’t even cover it. I think it is tough for women because childcare does cost a lot and if you haven’t got a hotshot job you love, it’s very difficult to tear yourself away (from your children) for it. 42 CITY KIDS

You’re married to an MP (Zac Goldsmith). Do you ever have the be the politician’s wife?
Working late at night! Snatching hours during nap times. I try not to be glued to my emails when I’m out and about with Dolly and, instead, focus on her. It’s not easy and I’ve had to become a lot more disciplined with time management.
No, not really, I’m not very good at that kind of thing. I do go canvassing but not as his wife, more as a friendly onlooker! Someone teaches you how to do it, but I forced him to come with me to every single door for the first two hours, and then he was like “Do you think you can go on your own now?” No one has slammed the door in my face yet.
Where is your favourite place to go with Dolly?
What does he think about Dotty Dungarees?
She loves the London Aquarium and Battersea Zoo. Closer to home, we spend a lot of time in a little playground around the corner from our house and at the Wetlands Centre. I also love Maggie and Rose in Chiswick. We have hours of fun at Monkey Music too!
He’s very supportive. He thinks it’s good because when I’m bored, I’m a nightmare.
How do you manage your time?
What does family mean to you? Dolly adores her half-siblings and lights up whenever they drop by on their way home from school. I’m also very close to my siblings - we speak most days and I see my sister, Kate, nearly every day. She had three kids very young (she’s only 32 and her eldest is 11) so is fantastic for advice. Dolly is also very lucky to have two doting grandmothers!
What can we expect from Dotty Dungarees this summer? We have branched into dresses, adorable dresses - we have one adorable fabric, which has the dots coming out to play. And we have some much lighter fabric dungarees for the summer. We’re so proud and happy with our first line and all the fabrics; it’s one of the things that people say they love - how soft they are, and flexible.
Who is your inspiration? Anyone who can juggle a successful business while being a hands on, devoted mother!! It’s already tough and we’ve hardly started!.
