Thankfully nothing and we have a bounce-tastic cover and an energetic fashion shoot to launch our Spring issue which is now heading to more homes than ever before. Ealing is the next place to get the City Kids treatment, while the magazine itself has had a little overhaul over the winter. We still have our inspirational What’s On guide, food with Jo Pratt, and Beverley Turner’s regular parenting insights. But we’ve listened to reader feedback and now bring you more books, extra features and our very first fashion shoot. Plus we have advice on how to survive the sleepover and possibly provide a legendary slumber party. Exquisite clothing for a new generation of little Britons Made in England

IN PRAISE OF MOTHERHOOD BEVERLEY TURNER

With every baby born, the congratulations, baby-gros and stuffed rabbits flood in. Attention is lavished on the newborn. And yet, we ignore the biggest change in the room: somebody just transformed overnight from woman to mother.

This is rather like waking up on a Spring morning to discover you aren’t needed in the office that day because you’ve just been elected President of The United States – with every responsibility from mass unemployment to nuclear capabilities under your control. It’s that big. Oh, and you won’t be paid for it; your body is no longer yours alone and you will frequently wake up breathless at the weight of expectations society will suddenly place on you as a ‘mother’ (I’m really selling this aren’t I?).

and cuddle. “It takes a village to raise a child” should be printed on every nappy as a reminder not to suffer in silence. Accept every single offer of help. Particularly in London, extended family is ordinarily hundreds of miles away, or – as we have babies later – no longer with us at all. Post-natal doulas are a godsend. And we must remember to applaud ourselves for the visible and invisible acts of mothering we do every single minute of every single day. Chatting to friends with one ear on the baby’s grizzles is a valuable, inherent skill. Instinctively dropping a hand for our child to hold is a simple act of love that we do without a second’s thought – but it matters! Sitting on the tube, penning a week’s nutritious menu in our heads is an act of mothering. And nobody gives us a pat on the back.

It is only natural to wonder, on occasion, whether it was worth swapping all that to be stuck at home with a crying baby you may struggle to understand, a chaotic home and a treacherous pelvic floor.

Of course, you will probably (but not certainly) be swimming in a warm sea of amazement, love and fascination, pausing only to kiss the little creases in your tiny munchkin’s silky neck. Either way, your ghast will be well and truly flabbered: you made, grew and birthed a whole human! You’re a total goddess … so how come you’re alone, unstacking the dishwasher in your dressing gown at 2pm? Western culture is completely rubbish at celebrating and respecting new mums. We’re not much better at applauding dads, but at least they have the fun tradition of ‘wetting the baby’s head’, meeting their mates down the pub to toast their journey into fatherhood (well done – hope it goes well before you return to work in two weeks). We don’t even have that! We hit the ground running, yoked to a beating heart that depends on us to thrive – both physically and emotionally.

I have three children, a great husband and trusted childcare. Yet, I still have moments of feeling utterly overwhelmed by the responsibility of every PE kit, piece of homework, party invitation, permission slip and pair of new school shoes that require my attention. I can only assume this never ends (sob … reach for Pinot … ). But nothing makes my heart swoop like a pair of little arms gripping my neck, watching the ‘shy one’ say her lines in assembly or the ‘stroppy one’ shaking off her sulk, and the ‘distracted one’ focusing on a book. These moments are the whole point. It may not seem like much. But that’s probably because we’re conditioned not to notice that we did that. We made that happen. And that makes us awesome.

“It takes a village to raise a child” should be printed on every nappy as a reminder not to suffer in silence.

Every baby actually births a mother. And today, that mother probably has a job she enjoys that pays half the morgage, a circle of fun friends and a well-used gym membership. It is only natural to wonder, on occasion, whether it was worth swapping all that to be stuck at home with a crying baby you may struggle to understand, a chaotic home and a treacherous pelvic floor. We were never meant to raise a baby single-handedly, or even double-handedly. We are tribal; we are meant to be surrounded by grandmothers, aunts, friends and sisters to cook, clean, calm

MUM BOSS:

Adelle Smith

How one woman has turned baking with her son at home into an award-winning business working alongside the likes of Google, Virgin and Nintendo. Adelle and Cai

How did it all start? BKD launched in 2014, in my kitchen in Shoreditch. What started as fun at home with my kids, swiftly grew and I had to rebase from my home, with my baking classes, to local haunts such as Hoxton Hotel, hosting corporate events, private birthday parties, creating bespoke cookies and styling photo-shoots. After establishing the events side of my business, I turned my attention to creating a collection of creative baking kits for children. I wanted to create a collection that encapsulated the BKD spirit of fun, teaching children kitchen basics and fuelling their imaginations. The collection launched in May last year and we are now stocked by lots of lovely kids boutiques, cook shops and delis, as well as bigger retailers such as Harvey Nichols, Fenwick and the Design Museum. What makes BKD stand out from the crowd? BKD’s focus is kids and design. I loved baking with Cai when he was younger, but hated all the baby blue and pink kitschness.

12 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

We wanted to make fun, unique things like monster cupcakes! We get kids into the kitchen learning essential life skills, fuelling their imaginations, and enable families to have quality time together. Our baking kits make baking super easy, fuss-free, and are made with quality ingredients. Our unisex monochrome packaging shouts out to the crowds and has definitely given us a distinctive look in the children’s market. What’s a typical day like for you? There is no typical day! Things change week on week. Recently, there has been a lot of writing and recipe testing for my new book, Baked, and photo shoots for that too. I also make YouTube videos with my boy when we get the time. As a small business owner, I am heavily involved with day to day management, from updating our social media, emailing customers back, paying my staff wages, to helping the team get a corporate biscuit order out the door. In other weeks, I could be doing a personal appearance and demonstration at shows such as BBC Good Food Show or at Big Feastival, entertaining the kids. I really mix things up and love the variety.

haircut! But I wouldn’t have it any other way. I love BKD and what I do. I adore my family, and know in time that things will become a bit calmer.

Do you love it? 100% yes. Have you found the holy grail of work/life balance? It’s funny, as I thought that running my own business would balance well with family life. Whilst it offers me flexibility, I also have to work very hard! There are never enough hours in the day and I often find myself working at night when the kids are in bed. Cai often comes to the bakery to ‘work’. He’s our mini apprentice, always bringing so much fun, chaos and distraction to our day. The ladies are amazing with him, though I have to say, on Fridays I often get a lot less done! But I absolutely love running my own business and being creative; I get such a buzz out of it! I literally never know what’s around the corner. If you told me last year that I’d get a book deal and publish a book this year, I’d have laughed my head off! I feel tired but very lucky :) Where do you get your ideas? Our kids constantly inspire me and are, of course, my chief tasters! But I also take inspiration from everything around me, fashion, product design, toys, travel, interiors, and trips to the park; I always see something that inspires me. I picked up the sweetest metal chocolate moulds in a market in Essaouira, Morocco. I’m always on the hunt for cool things for the bakery. Do you ever have ‘me’ time? I have to say that is a very, very rare thing. Being a mum, a wife, running a business, and writing a book on top of that, it hasn’t left much time for me. I can’t remember the last time I had a

What three words would your kids use to describe you? Cuddly, fun, bit crazy. How far would you like to take BKD? What started as baking at home with my kids has now developed into a brand and business. I would love to keep developing that. It’s been a rollercoaster journey from day one. Within a few months of launching, I was thrilled and gobsmacked to hear that I’d made it into the finals in the ‘Best Loved Kids’ Food’ category of the Virgin Foodpreneur competition, where I could meet Richard Branson. So what can we expect from you in 2016? We’ve just launched a range of Baking Mixes that we hope to get into supermarkets, opening up another category for us and taking BKD to kitchen cupboard staples. I will also be doing more online video content very soon. I’m really looking forward to getting back in front of the camera. In July, my book, Baked, will be out. So, so much work has gone into it and I’m super excited about promoting it. It still feels surreal to think how far I’ve come with BKD in such a short space of time; it really has changed my life.

BAKED: Amazing Bakes to Create with Your Child (Orchard Books, £12.99) will be available from all good bookshops and online from 28th July 2016.

SHARKY & GEORGE

WANT TO LAY ON AN EGG-CELLENT EASTER EGG HUNT? SHARKY & GEORGE HAVE SOME CRACKING IDEAS TO ENSURE YOUR TRAIL HAS THE EGGS FACTOR!

Mixed Age Hunt Most family egg hunts consist of a big range of ages taking part. To stop greedy big cousin Bruce Bogtrotter from nailing all of the booty in 10 seconds flat, colour coding is key. So buy a big bag of eggs wrapped in different coloured foil. Allocate a colour to each participant or age-group and hide the eggs accordingly. If Bruce is gold, make sure all the gold eggs are tricky to find to slow him up! Rhyming Clues If you have the time, nothing beats an Easter egg hunt with rhyming clues. This can be done anywhere, but a big garden or park is really the best. To set up, start at the end of the hunt and write your clues from there. For example, hide the final big stash of eggs under a bench, and then write a clue saying, “Well done! Last clue ‘till you find it…. Look high and low round somewhere you sit” Hide this clue folded up tight under a horse chestnut tree and write the next clue, something like:

It works well to put enough eggs for everyone playing at each clue, or every other clue, to keep everyone going! You shouldn’t need more than 10 clues or so depending on the space you’re using. Runaway Bunny If you’d like an alternative to the traditional egg hunt, hire or buy a big bunny costume. Get one adult dressed up as the Easter Bunny to hide somewhere with a basket full of wrapped eggs. Then get all the children to come out for an egg hunt, at which point the bunny legs it, flinging handfuls of eggs behind him. It’s important for the bunny to have a decent escape route so as not to be caught by the children! Little Hunters Little bit mean, but if you have a toddler who you don’t necessarily want gorging themselves on 100s of chocolates, get some plastic egg containers and put toys, biscuits and snacks in them so that they still have the fun of the egg hunt but aren’t stuffing themselves with loads of chocolate.

“If you can’t find this one you must be bonkers, look carefully where you collect conkers.” www.sharkyandgeorge.com CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 21

FOOD BY JO PRATT

W

e should all start the morning with a well-balanced, fabulous-tasting breakfast. You’ll feel full of vitality and ready to tackle whatever the rest of day throws your way.

However, in reality – it’s usually the weekends (or holidays) when we have slightly more time on our side first thing. So make sure you plan ahead for the weekend and have plenty of healthy ingredients to hand when you know you’ll have time to enjoy eating them. Start off with an energy-giving, super-hydrating juice drink that’s great for your digestion. Packed with fresh fruit, powerful ginger and coconut water, all you do is

blend and go. Kids should love it too, and you can freeze any leftover for an ice-pop another day. For a real treat you have to have a go at pan-frying some avocado. It has a smoky flavour similar to mild smoked bacon, and is perfect served on toasted crusty bread with nutritious poached eggs and protein rich tahini.

Enjoy!

PINEAPPLE, MANGO AND COCONUT JUICE SERVES 2
 PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes 1/2 ripe pineapple / about 300g / 10 1/2 oz flesh,

peeled and cut into chunks 1/2 ripe mango, peeled, pitted and chopped

500ml / 17fl oz / 2 cups coconut water, chilled 1 tsp grated root ginger juice of 1/2 lime ice cubes, to serve (optional)

1. Put all the ingredients in a blender and blitz for about 1 minute until completely smooth. 2. Pour into glasses and serve over ice, if using, or straight.

WASTE NOT, WANT NOT Not only is coconut water a great ingredient to use in juices and smoothies, but you can also use it to cook rice. It gives it a subtle flavour that works brilliantly with a number of cuisines from around the world, such as Asian, Indian, Caribbean or South American, to name a few. If you have some left over after making this recipe, why not give it a try? 22 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

PARENTING

L

ike a third martini, the sleepover is something you say yes to when your guard is down and everyone is having fun. More often than not, both decisions heap regret on the pillow come the morning. Children, however, live in blissful ignorance of the game of consequences and love nothing better than staying up late, eating trash, watching movies and passing out on the floor. It seems we never learn…

party again!”). No one will sleep, someone will always cry and in the morning you’ll lie to all your children’s parents about how delightful their child is and how you can’t wait to do it again.

So when is your child old enough to go for a sleepover? The obvious answer is when the child is ready although I think I prefer the honest friend who proffered the response of when it suits the parents. Readiness varies according to character and circumstance and can be wildly different even between siblings. “I seem to be surrounded by mothers who start sleepovers in Year 2 and if the child is a second or third sibling, some of them even ask for the child to go for a sleepover at the end of Reception,” groans a friend. Oh hello, weary parents seeking a night of peace.

Here are some pearls of wisdom from those kind souls stupid generous enough to have hosted a slumber party. Firstly, all children must be ‘self-toileting’. It is not OK to administer Imodium to avoid dealing with another child’s poo. It is imperative to make it fun and different to the everyday. Have a midnight feast (not at midnight, obviously). Plump for popcorn over crumby biscuits or melty chocolate. Take a gamble on your guests’ intelligence and make like a Vegas casino – change all the clocks in the house so that they sleep longer. Ban all screens and gadgets. And my favourite piece of advice? Only invite children who you like - simple, but effective (the advice, not the child).

Let’s be clear here. There is a difference between a sleepover and that seemingly American invention: the slumber party. The sleepover is your friend, to be used at your convenience (or dire need) in a reciprocal manner with like-minded friends, or flowing as freely as champagne at a rich friend’s party if your children are fortunate enough to have grandparents/aunts/ uncles/fairy godparents who welcome their wit and repartee and think being bounced on at early o’clock is really rather sweet.

Of course, sleepovers are rich pickings for worst-first thinkers. While abuse is statistically more likely to be carried out by people familiar to your child, it seems that it’s older siblings and their friends who are often the most inappropriate influence. Unsuitable movies and unfamiliar people come a close second. Ask lots of questions about anything you’re worried about, agree that your child can always call you to be picked up and use your infinite wisdom that several years of parenting has bestowed upon you when deciding if it feels right.

The slumber party, meanwhile, is something to be saved for a rare occasion, undertaken with great planning and in the full knowledge that the kickback will ripple out across the households of every lucky guest. This is a time to set rules. These rules will be broken. You’ll hand out threats that you will never carry through (because you couldn’t come up with anything better than, “you’ll never have another pyjama

If you want to go the whole hog, you can take a group of children to BedBUGS at London Zoo or Dino Snores at the Natural History Museum. The Science Museum, British Museum and the Museum of London all offer sleepovers. Even Hamley’s does. And if you’re rich enough to afford that, might I suggest being selfish and keeping it cosy instead with a family stay in a childfriendly hotel with a kids’ club. Yes please to that third martini.

WHAT ARE SELECTIVE SCHOOLS LOOKING FOR? 7+, 11+, 13+, 16+

... Nope, not a maths reasoning test – though for many parents, it is possibly worse. These are the typical admissions ages for the UK’s selective schools – a veritable minefield of processes and requirements that need to be negotiated in order for your children to get into the school of your choice. It would be impossible to cover all the nuances of each schools’ admissions process, but the typical elements are: The “pre-test” – typically a proprietary or online ISEB (Independent Schools Examination Board) test sat at your child’s current school – accompanied by a reference letter from your child’s head teacher. If all goes well, then your child, and possibly you, the parents, will be asked to attend an interview and activities day with various staff members at the school. A thumbs up from them, and all that is required is for your child to achieve the appropriate pass rates in subsequent exams (most often Common Entrance). A golden ticket to a world-class education awaits. Simple. Well, sort of…. The problem, of course, is that the top schools are doing too good a job. Aided by favourable demographics and a geographically wider selection policy, they can afford to be even more selective than they have been in the past. The academic requirements they seek are, for various reasons, now achieved by so many that they no longer filter as they once did. Schools are looking for ways to see past all the polish of tutoring and understand the child’s genuine potential to fit in and thrive. In many ways, it is hugely refreshing that there is some pushback against all this teaching to “the test”. The best schools have worked out that, as the robots continue their inexorable rise, shortterm memory will be a less valuable skill for our children’s generation to succeed in life.

by HUGO SHEPHARD

Schools are looking for ways to see past all the polish of tutoring and understand the child’s genuine potential to fit in and thrive. Multiple intelligences across the spectrum, from physical to emotional, is what they are looking for. Critical, independent thinkers who can lead, but also step back and be team players. Students with creativity, enterprise, ambition, resilience and confidence, to name but a few characteristics, are being sought. Schools are also looking for enthusiasts with growth mind-sets; well-rounded, interesting, curious and passionate students. Schools are under ever increasing scrutiny to justify their fees. They realise they need to be producing graduates who can make recognisable contributions to the wider world. They do, of course, develop these qualities as part of the curriculum, but they are also acutely aware that if a student has those qualities when they arrive, they have a better base on which to build. As such their interviews and assessment days are designed specifically to unearth these characteristics. So, whilst academic grades remain a vital component in the admissions process, there is an ever-increasing requirement to ensure your child has these qualities. They can be developed in the home, at your child’s existing school and, increasingly, through specialist supplementary courses and camps. The good news is that investment into developing these qualities has the benefit helping your child conquer the admissions maze. It also gives them the best chance of prospering and enjoying their time at school. These are also qualities that, once developed, will never be wasted.

Now, more than ever, the top selective schools are looking for specific qualities that will enable the children to take advantage of the incredible opportunities on offer.

What does this all mean? Well, the head’s letter, along with the interviews and assessment day in particular, are an increasingly important part of the admissions process. Now, more than ever, the top selective schools are looking for specific qualities that will enable the children to take advantage of the incredible opportunities on offer. The new breed of heads and their visions are championed by the likes of Simon Henderson at Eton and Julian Thomas at Wellington College, both of whom, in recent press articles, have highlighted the necessity for skills and aptitudes beyond the pure acquisition of academic grades.

THE TRUTH ABOUT TUTORING

EDUCATION

by CLARE PELHAM

As the competition for schools reaches staggering proportions, the number of London families employing private tutors for their children has exploded. One very experienced tutor on the books of a large agency, accurately describes the process as an arms race between anxious parents. Is this phenomenon a fad for the well heeled parent or has long term tutoring become essential for success?

Parents need to spread the net wide, rather than obsess about entry to a handful of schools. League table rankings only provide a limited picture, particularly when more and more schools, such as Eton and St Paul’s, choose to be excluded. For example, a technically lower ranked school may offer more GCSE options and activities than its higher ranked counterpart. The headmistress of a small girls’ boarding school proudly informed me that the girls decide which GCSEs are offered, not the other way around. It is important to remember that almost all independent schools have the high standards required for universities such as Oxbridge. I encourage my clients to contemplate weekly boarding, newly established and state schools, especially the new free schools and sixth form colleges. There are many good options at both the secondary school and university level if parents remain open minded.

Has long term tutoring become essential for success?

There is little doubt that gaining a place at a good independent or grammar school seems like winning the lottery. Many students make multiple attempts at several different institutions. Only a few years ago, the 11 plus exam might have consisted of a single short interview. Now, some schools, such as St Paul’s Boys, require a “pre pre online test”, as well as lengthy papers in maths, English and reasoning, along with an intense interview. To accommodate the children who miss out in the first round, a myriad of schools have added extra entry points, creating a blindingly confusing array of 7+, 8+, 9+, 10+, 11+, 12+, 13+ and Common Entrance papers. Is it any wonder that parents seek extra help for children straight out of nappies? Extra tuition can be very helpful if deployed with specific goals in mind. Students applying to the top secondary schools have to be pitch perfect in English and maths due to the high ratio of applicants per place. Private tutoring in the run up to the 11 plus exams often makes all the difference by correcting any weak areas. Similarly, nothing beats plodding through past GCSE and A level papers with a teacher who has done it all before. My daughter’s tutor, currently in medical school, has coaxed her through science exams so successfully that she recently received an offer to read chemistry at her top choice university. Their mentor relationship is certainly one of the main reasons for her academic turn around. Yet, excessive tutoring can be counter-productive. I meet children who have had so many different tutors, they never attempt an essay alone. They lose much of their original enthusiasm for learning and appear jaded, which is the kiss of death at school interviews. The best case is where the child himself is involved, at some level, in discussions regarding the choice of tutors and future schools. Subsequently, the child feels involved in each stage of his education, which better motivates him to work. The objective must be to develop the child’s confidence in his ability to overcome academic obstacles as the hurdles continue, long after primary school.

Alarmingly, many independent schools manipulate their A level results by replacing weaker students in the class with an intake at the start of the sixth form. Many parents wrongly assume their child has a school place until university. Thus, research on the school’s expectations for minimum GCSE grades, as well as any feedback from current students and their parents, is crucial. Selective tutoring prior to the GCSEs can alleviate the pressure. Even if the worst happens and a child loses his place at sixth form, the once named “crammers”, such as MPW and Collingham, have guided many a lost student to A level and GCSE victory. The truth is that private tutoring is only one aspect of the question, “How do we best educate our child?” While extensive tutoring might help win the battle for a place at a top secondary school, parents could lose the war if their child subsequently underperforms and is forced to change schools. A better long term strategy might be to reserve tutoring as one of the weapons in your arsenal to win the ultimate reward of a well earned university place.

The objective must be to develop the child’s confidence in his ability to overcome academic obstacles as the hurdles continue, long after primary school. Clare Pelham is a tutor herself as well as a founder of Chelsea and Fulham Tutors. Her three children have successfully navigated the London day and boarding school systems, with one each at Eton, St Paul’s and Latymer Upper. She began her career as an intellectual property lawyer with an Ivy League degree in Engineering Physics. www.chelseaandfulhamtutors.co.uk

TELLING A TERRIFIC STORY

10 TIPS

Tired of reading the same story to your child? Then create your own!

Pick the Perfect Plot Have Fun with the Familiar Keep Quietly Quizzical Colour the Characters

1.

Pitch it Personally - Create a story between you. Personalise it. ast your child as the hero, involve their friends in the story and make the plot relevant to them. The more the child can relate to the tale, the more interested they will be.

2.

Stick with the Structure - Stick with the traditional storytelling structure. Decide characters, setting, time, plot twist and ending, in that order. Good stories need strong conflict and resolution. An ideal length is around eight minutes.

Vary the Voice

Once Upon a Time

Pitch It Personally

NIKKI WARD, ex-actress and children’s theatre director, shares some helpful hints.

Pitch it Personally

Pick the Perfect Plot Park the Pressure Stock up the Story Jar Pinch from the Pros

6. Have Fun with the Familiar - Adapt a well known tale. Take the plot and change the characters, setting or ending. Good stories to start with are The Brothers Grimm Tales, Aesop’s Fables and anything written for children by Roald Dahl, Enid Blyton or Dr Seuss. 7.

Park the Pressure - Relax! Make aspects of your story silly. Have fun. Use facial expressions and voices you and your child can laugh at. Go fo rit; there will be guaranteed giggles. Don’t just dip your toe in, dive in and have a fun story swim!

3. Pick the Perfect Plot - A strong plot is essential. Aim to base your story around your child’s favourite activities and interests. Places your child has enjoyed going to, and where they would like to go, can also create strong plot lines.

8. Vary the Voice - Use different tones in various parts of the story. Vary the pace. Play with different voices for each character. By doing this, your child will be able to follow the story and feel involved in the action.

4.

9. Keep Quietly Quizzical - Ask questions throughout the story. If your child doesn’t know the answer then have a response ready. Ask questions like: “What might happen?”; “Who should do this?”. Questions will not only sustain interest, but will help move the story on.

Stock Up the Story Jar - If you are dry on ideas, story jars can be your best friend! Write down a variety of characters and plots on different sheets of paper. Fold these and drop them into jars. Ask the child to choose one of each from the jars. This is another way of involving children in the story making process.

5. Colour the Characters - Make the characters interesting and colourful. Describe what the character is thinking, hearing, smelling and tasting in vivid detail. Ensure the characters in your story really come to life in your child’s imagination.

NEW

10. Pinch from the Pros - Pick up some further tips from the professionals. Storytelling events are happening everywhere right now: from libraries and museums, to theatres, community centres and colleges. As acclaimed storyteller and author, Robin Moore, says, “Inside each of us is a natural born storyteller just waiting to be released”. So create those stories together, let the imagination flow, and above all, have fun!

The Fairytale Hairdresser and Beauty and the Beast by Abie Longstaff and Lauren Beard. (Penguin Random House).

I am Bear by Ben Bailey Smith and Sav Akyüz (Walker).

Confessions of an Imaginary Friend A memoir by Jacques Papier as told to Michelle Cuevas (Simon & Schuster).

Abie Longstaff and Lauren Beard return with their latest fairytale caper, starring Kittie Lacey - the best hairdresser in all the land. Sticking to a winning formula of putting a quirky spin on a traditional fairytale, this time Bella is in the spotlight. Working as a painter, Bella is the official artist for Cinderella and Prince Charming’s baby’s celebration for the royal ball. She chances on the beast when she heads to his house to escape a storm and begins to do his portrait but has to hot foot it when the rain clears and the ball is looming large. Will the beast be able to find Bella and reveal the truth about how a wicked spell was put on him? Of course he does, but not only that he really saves the day when it comes to ball.

Meet bear. He’s cheeky, bold and funny. Ricky Gervais called this book ‘fun, smart and different…. I love this bear.’ He is a bit of a dude, he has purple hair and he’s not afraid of eating the odd squirrel from time to time. Oops! A real blast of a read, with larger-thanlife illustrations by Sav Akyüz that will have young readers in giggles with the naughtiness of the situations that bear gets into. If there’s trouble, he’s right in the thick of it. The rhyming verse makes this a breeze for parents to read over and over, and if you head to www.iambearbook.com you can watch the animated musical video and learn the rap recorded by Ben. Go, on tap into your inner Eminem, you know you want to.

Definitely another hit book from this super duo whose use of diverse characters breaks the mould.

invisible. Wait a minute, he is invisible. Why’s that? Because he discovers the shocking truth that he isn’t Fleur’s brother, he’s her imaginary friend. The film rights to this bittersweet story have already been snapped up and it’s no wonder why. Laced with humour throughout, Jacques has to navigate the world with his newly found status of being imaginary and it’s not an easy ride… Definitely a heart warming tale that fans of Moone Boy will enjoy.

Shackleton’s Journey Acitivity Book by William Grill

The Private Blog of Joe Cowley – Return of the Geek by Ben Davis

If you bought the award-winning Shackleton’s Journey by William Grill (Flying Eye Books), you’ll love this activity book which will keep your darlings occupied for hours. If you didn’t buy the book , make space on your shelves immediately and head to the shops on double-quick.

If all of the Wimpy Kid books have been exhausted but you’re looking for something in a similar vain but for the next age group, look no further than The Private Blog of Joe Cowley by Ben Davis and illustrated by Mike Lowery (Oxford University Press).

Following he heroic efforts of explorer Earnest Shackleton whose ambition it was to cross Antarctica, this book is a brilliant mix of factual information and creativity. Tasks range from designing outfits for the arctic (in light of the fact that Shackleton hadn’t changed for three months), drawing an ice giant, writing diary entries, writing a show (Shackleton kept boredom at bay by entertaining the men with stories and games). Beautifully illustrated, it’s educational but fun and will definitely get your child’s creative juices flowing. An absolute must-have. Almost too good for the kids.

It’s the second in this very funny serious which tells the story of Joe Cowley who is troubled by three things which ‘suck’ about his life – he’s still sharing a room with his step-brother Gav (who used to bully him at school), his mum is six months pregnant with twins and he’s about to have a brace fitted. Cor! Tough life eh? The only thing that is going well is that he has a girlfriend. Which in theory would be great if it wasn’t for the fact that her dad hates him, and now he’s facing stiff competition for her affection from Seb who’s pretty nifty with his DJ skills.

SECONDARY The Hour of the Bees by Lindsay Eagar A simply stunning debut from Lindsay Edgar who finely blends reality with magic as she shows relationship between a young girl named Carol and her grandfather Serge who is suffering from dementia. It’s not an easy time for Carol. Whilst her friends are spending their summer holidays having a ball, 12 year old Carol is in New Mexico helping her parents move the grandfather she’s never met into a home. Not exactly a holiday to boast to your friends. But as time goes on she starts to get to know Serge and as she listens to his fantastical tales, she realises there’s more to her family than she imagined. And what about the bees she keeps seeing? What do they mean? Atmospheric, deep and written with such beauty, even the toughest of teens will be moved by this touching tale.

The jokes come thick and fast and there’s definitely plenty of LOL moments as Joe and his best friends Harry and Ad are going to enter a DJ competition and beat Seb at his own game. We all love an underdog and Joe is noexception as he battles his way various cringe-inducing situations in which you can’t help but feel sorry for him. Just the right tone for younger teens without heading into the Inbetweeners territory. CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 33

CHEL SKI by FRANCESCA YOUNG

SKIING WITHOUT THE FUSS I’ve always wanted to go on a family skiing holiday but then, remember, I’ve got five-year-old twins. The fear that we’d never get beyond the nursery slopes and the cost, coupled with a high risk of tantrums, has always put me off. So the invitation to test out Chel-Ski, the new dry ski slope as close to home as Fulham Broadway, appealed hugely — here was my chance to give the two newbies their first taste of skiing, without the risk of a week of whingeing. The set up at Chel-Ski — where two carpet-covered treadmill slopes face each other, with alpine scenes in the background — allows for two groups of up to three people per instructor; you can only ski under such supervision. Booked in for an hour, each group gets ten minutes’ skiing time and ten minutes’ rest. Our two (very over-excited) first time skiers were kitted out — no carrying skis with numb hands for me, I noted gleefully. Grouped with one other beginner, the ski schoolers were shown the basics, including the ‘pizza shape’ necessary to master snowplough. Despite only letting go of the handrail once, our junior testers enjoyed it so much they found the waiting time difficult, impatient to get back on the slope, only to fall down repeatedly, giggling.

SKIING FOR ALL LEVELS The beauty of the treadmill-style, adjustable slopes means it can accommodate all levels: from complete beginners to Olympic standard pro. One experienced (grown-up) skier confided that it’s more difficult than the real thing. But it was reassuring to see slope stops turning the second you fall — so no nasty carpet burns. At £34.95 for a junior session, it’s not cheap. However, it is more affordable and warmer, with a lot less cursed carrying of skis, than a family jaunt to Val d’Isère. Given the insistent calls for a repeat visit, our five-year-olds certainly gave it the double thumbs up — we’ll be back. APRÈS-SKI It’s also worth noting that Chel-Ski shares the old Christopher Wray lighting warehouse (just off the King’s Road) with Clip N Climb — the two are joined by a balcony café. On the Friday night we visited, the colourful climbing walls, vertical drop slide and thumping disco music made us want to join in. And at £9 a pop (for children aged 4-15; off peak) we’ll be trying that next week. If you want to get some practice in before spring skiing, or wish to avoid the hassle of passport checks and travelling with small children, Chel*ski is a great alternative to the real thing. www.chel-ski.uk CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 35
