e are 5! How we managed to get here, no one knows. There have been mistakes, panic, parties, lots of fun and plenty of learning! Thank you all for continuing to pick City Kids up and following our little venture in an era when print media is in

decline. CK seems to be bucking that trend and we’re delighted. I am largely, and proudly, a one woman show, but if you forgive the Oscar-like speech, there are some fabulous women (watch this space for developments on that front) who have become friends and who contribute so much to the magazine. Long-suffering Caroline has designed the magazine from day one, put up with my attempts to explain the inner workings of my brain, and has actually read my mind on occasion. Thank goodness or we’d all lose the plot! Allie, who works so hard to build relationships with clients whose ads keep the magazine afloat. Amazing (and thank you to said clients, of course!) Bev, you didn’t hesitate to join the ride five years ago – I always look forward to receiving your copy. It’s brilliant, funny and never disappoints. Jo, who was roped into this enterprise at the start and has not only provided recipes from her books, but also created original meals (go buy her books, they’re fab). Shirley, who is an exceptional proofreader, especially under pressure! Lianne, who puts together our What’s On guide and who leaves us after four years. How could you?! (good luck). And to Mandy, Ellie and Sophie, who have edited and written features so wonderfully. We celebrate the five-year mark with a new face. Morag Turner, ex-Editor of Absolutely Mama and all-round talented journo, joins the ranks as our Editor, overseeing the website and keeping me in check. Turn to p50 to find out more about the team. And finally - did someone say presents? Head to our website to win all of the items in WE LOVE, a copy of The Flexible Pescatarian, as well as all the books on p35. Here’s to the next five years!

Peace of mind. The world can be a noisy place. That’s why children at St James practise ‘stillness’ and pause before and after every lesson. We see them calm down, refocus and head off to their next class buzzing with renewed energy. For parents, peace of mind comes from knowing your child will thrive academically and creatively in a warm, happy environment. Our pupils get great results. They just don’t get stressed about it. BEVERLEY TURNER

WOMEN’S DAY 2019

CALLS FOR A MORE GENDER-BALANCED WORLD

We asked our columnist, BEVERLEY TURNER, for her take on this year’s message. She wrote a letter to her children.

Dear kids, It’s 2019. The ramifications of Brexit rumble on, but – on a brighter note – there are almost daily news stories about gender: what it means to be a boy or a man; a girl or a woman, and everything in between. The notion that identity and gender may not be fixed, determined solely by nature, remains radical – I know this must seem terribly old-fashioned to you. We’re only just realising that it’s important to question long-held binary assumptions about who we are and what that means. Therein lie all sorts of freedoms. The movements that celebrate ‘National Women’s Day’, highlight the gender pay gap and the #metoo campaign (revealing unspoken sexual harassment), are necessary. I hope that by the time you are older, these concepts will also seem laughably out-dated. But big changes only happen when small changes are made behind closed doors. And this is where you come in! Don’t roll your eyes…this is the most important challenge you will face. Yes, it is even bigger than the 11+. I have great hopes for you guys. Yours is the first generation to have normalised trousers for girls at school (not so much take up for boys in skirts, yet…), and you’re at the forefront of redefining what it means to be male or female. But we need to agree on what a happy population looks like. And no, a happy population is not one that stares at a screen all day waiting for its Uber take away to be pushed around the door. To me, it is a community that feels rewarded (financially, but also emotionally). It enjoys a sense of purpose; relaxes when there is a good balance between work and play; is regularly nourished by time with loved ones and has challenges which it strives to meet. A happy population possesses resilience for times when

FEATURE

HAVING IT Most women say it’s impossible.

VICTORIA EVANS asks author of The Mother of All Jobs, CHRISTINE ARMSTRONG, why.

T

he theme for International Women’s Day this year is #BalanceForBetter, celebrating the achievements of women, while calling for a more gender-balanced world. The gender pay gap is now a common talking point as stories reveal how men and women have been treated differently over the years. Only recently, Google’s former UK head revealed she once had to hire a male executive on double her salary. The right to ask for flexible working, which is, incidentally, relevant to men and women, came into force almost two decades ago, but only a small proportion of the UK workforce actually takes the plunge. And still, women are made redundant while on maternity leave, or they return to work to find to find their role isn’t the same as it was. How did we get to this stage, where many women feel overwhelmed while striving to have it all? We took the 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. male breadwinner model – think The Tiger Who Came to Tea – that assumed Mummy was at home to care for Sophie and zoo visitors, and do the shopping, washing and cleaning. And then we added lots of things. We added costs, as house prices quadrupled in twenty years, to all the adults, who normally work to pay the bills. We also added ‘always on’ as a lot of people are connected to work from when they wake until when they sleep. Then we added more out-of-home time as we moved a bit further away from our families and lengthened our commutes. We left in the fact that women are still more responsible for childcare, generally, and the house, than men. The structures that care for our kids was left unchanged. Nursery care is extortionate, and schools still finish mid-afternoon, with kids getting three months of holiday a year. Piss, I’ve just depressed myself. What’s your message to the Sheryl Sandberg’s [Facebook C.O.O. & founder of Leanin.org] of the world? It is great to be positive and encouraging, and to support other

12 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

women. It is well-intentioned and designed to ensure more women get to the top so we can change things. But the unintended consequence is that families all over the world are feeling like failures. They tried leaning in, getting the best childcare they could afford and being better organised, but they still can’t make it work. I worry that, if we only hear from women at the very top of their professions, in terms of seniority and income, we miss out on hearing from millions of other families who can’t afford professional support (nannies, cleaners, housekeepers), can’t take control of their own time and are finding it unbelievably tough going. I want to say to those women and their partners: it’s not you and your family that can’t do this, the system wasn’t designed to work this way and if we keep saying everything is peachy, then we’ll never get around to changing it. What is the biggest barrier to improving the work environment for women and parents? There isn’t one barrier: you have to look at childcare hours, availability and costs, the lack of flexible options in most work, the mismatch between work and school days and our cultural expectations around what demonstrates ‘commitment’ at work. Too often that is judged on the total number of hours worked. And in a world which is always on, you’ll burn out if you work every hour of the day and try to care for a family. If I had to focus on just one area, I would look at the total number of hours people work. Not their contractual hours – which often look perfectly reasonable on paper – but the actual numbers of hours they are connected to work – and figure out how to manage that. What advice would you have for someone wanting to talk to their boss about flexible working? I cite Karen Mattison of Timewise here: describe the benefits that you bring before the hours that you work. For example, I will deliver X and Y and Z on time and on budget. I will be in

ALL? the office for three days a week and work from home, being fully contactable, on Monday and Friday. What more can be done to bridge the gender pay gap? We need to change the way we work for both men and women so that everyone can work in a focused and highly productive way, but also turn off and do other things when they are not working. Too often we celebrate people who are seen to work many, many hours, even if many of those hours are not productive and their tired, stressful reactions to things may not deliver the best answers. One thing I want to see more work on is how we use technology. Too often people say they cannot switch off their electronic devices because they may ‘block’ progress on a sale or a project. We need to use technology better so that things can move forward within a team without everyone always having to be engaged all the damned time. Friends just moved to work in Denmark and are astonished to find everyone starts at 8 a.m. and leaves work at 3 or 4 p.m. to collect kids and have dinner with them. Yet the OECD says that Nordic countries are 10-20% better off in terms of GDP because they enable more mums to work. We see letting people leave work early as an indulgence when the irony is that we could work fewer hours and actually do better as a country, and within our own businesses and households. Why aren’t men judged in the same way as women? Many people are struggling to come to terms with the fact that the male breadwinner model many of us grew up with – when, if mums did work, they tended to work in lower paid/more local roles – doesn’t really work anymore if you want to live in the kind of place your parents could live in on one income. We don’t have the social support to enable parents to both work and care for their kids: for example, early years care is extortionate in this country and pushes many women out of work, then making them ineligible for the 30 free hours during term time when they could get it. Our current leaders in business and politics have tended to live and thrive in the old model and don’t fully appreciate the pressures of the way we work now. Even women I interview in their 50s and 60s who have had good careers say that they had the advantage of being able to leave the office at 5 p.m. and then not

be interrupted at home. They report how much more difficult it got after email, computer/laptops at home and BlackBerries came in. I always say though that, having interviewed a lot of men, they are not the winners in this either. Many younger men know the way their dads worked won’t work for them and want to be more involved at home but find their work places unsupportive of them. Older men often resent having to be ‘the breadwinner’. If both genders are to work, both must also be able to care. Do you think you’ve found the balance of work and parenting? This stuff is like dieting. One day you eat cod and salad and feel like you’re on it and the next you accidentally wolf down a cheeseburger and chips, followed by a box of Lindt truffles. The truth is that we have three young kids and run two businesses… When my parents took our kids before Christmas for a week it was mind-blowing. We couldn’t believe how much time and energy we had. Every day, our children rightly demand our time and attention, and giving it to them is always a compromise between their needs and everything else we want and need to do. That said, I feel very lucky to spend so much time around home and the girls’ school. I do drop-offs and pick-ups most days, I am fully embedded in the week’s schedule of clubs, playdates and homework – and that is very different to when I held a full-time corporate role. Aside a student babysitter who helps cover pickups and swimming classes once or twice a week, my husband and I share the childcare between us. Do you think anything significant will change for women in the work place in the next 10 years? If – big if – we keep talking loudly about the challenges of the current system (for men and women) and the research that shows we can be more productive in less time, then I am optimistic we can move to fewer working hours, but more productive ways of working. If we spout the same old rubbish about just working harder and women ‘choosing to have babies’ as part of their ‘lifestyle’, nothing will change.

his month I release my latest book, The Flexible Pescatarian, a follow-up to The Flexible Vegetarian which gave cooks the option to add meat or fish to vegetarian meals. This time, fish and shellfish are the stars and I have included plenty of advice on how to source and cook with fish, and to adapt the recipes and be f lexible! The recipe I have chosen for the Spring issue is Fish Fingers and a Handful of Dips, which should please children of all ages (and their parents!) Impossible to resist, homemade fish fingers are the best. You can use most types of fish, but the chunkier the fish, the bigger and juicier your fingers will be. If you want daintier goujons, opt for a f lat fish such as sole, plaice or dab. In the book, there are five different dips to choose from. We’ve added the recipes for two here; you can find the other three over on our website – www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk TIME TAKEN 30 minutes SERVES 4 450g / 1 lb white fish, skinned 50g / 1¾ oz plain flour 2 eggs, beaten 100g / 4½ oz dried white breadcrumbs, ideally panko 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp flaked sea salt olive oil, for frying

freshly ground black pepper • Cut the fish into finger-sized pieces. • Put the f lour, beaten egg and breadcrumbs into separate, shallow bowls. Mix the paprika, salt and a twist of pepper into the f lour. • Lightly coat the fish in the f lour, then egg, and finish with a coating of breadcrumbs. • To fry the fish fingers, pour in enough oil to cover the base of a frying pan and, when it’s hot, add the fish fingers. • Fry for 2-3 minutes on each side until golden and crunchy. You may need to do this in a couple of batches as it’s best not to overcrowd the pan. • Drain on kitchen paper and serve with your chosen dips. • Alternatively, you can bake the fish fingers by putting them on an oiled baking tray and drizzling or spraying with oil. Bake in a preheated oven at 200°C/400°F/ gas 6 for 6 minutes on each side.

MATHEMAGICIANS Harvington Prep’s Head reflects on recent wins

I

never excelled in mathematics whilst at school; this engendered in me, a strong admiration for those who did. As a Head, I was keen to explore how mathematics was relevant to the children in a way that was accessible to all, was exciting, was fun and that built confidence. We are fortunate in the independent sector, to have small class sizes and to be able to work with a manageable size of pupils that results in productive attention to all. The catchment area of our school is, in addition, an oasis tucked away in west London that bursts with an abundance of family life that is ambitious and aspires for the best for their children, beyond and above any socio-economic stereotype. As such, in Ealing, we are blessed with exceptional independent and maintained schools. The selection of highly qualified staff together with an inspiring and imaginative curriculum is the essence without which a bright and shining star cannot glow. All children are stars and all children have the potential to glow. Our choice of mathematics scheme five years ago was spurred from a critical appraisal of what was available to primary schools in the UK at that time. We were keen to find a scheme that was practical and that enabled children of all abilities to make good progress, supporting the

less mathematical ones of us and stretching the most able. We embraced the Singapore Maths scheme and began an intensive training programme for our teaching and non-teaching staff. The rest is history. The top and most highly selective schools in our local area, were invited to a Maths Challenge run by DCBeagle, aimed at testing skill and speed; mostly problem solving based, the challenge sets to test the ‘inquisitive mind’. Six of ‘the best’ schools in Ealing from both the independent and maintained sector, accepted our invitation and the two hour long challenge took place on 6th February 2019. It was an event that reached out to our local community and brimming with anticipation and excitement, we welcomed our neighbouring schools to Harvington, and revelled in the opportunity to bring together children of the same age to mingle and to share in their passion for mathematical problem solving. Children were arranged in pairs and each school had up to 5 groups that represented them. The challenge was to complete the problems one by one and to swiftly present the answers to the markers on stage, who were the teachers from the schools present. As each problem was solved, the children returned to their seats and progressed to the next one, with the object of completing as many as possible, during a given period of time. And all at once, mathematics became a joy; a puzzle to be solved; an urgent collaboration of young minds; an energetic quest amidst the most electric exuberance that was 11 year old children with a purpose. What was overwhelming to behold, was the outstanding participation of absolutely everyone and to that end, it is almost a pity to have ‘winners and not winners’, but of course that was the essence of the magic on the day! The extra magic was that Harvington not only won but were placed second too. My reflections on our success are many and touch upon the oldest debates in education, providing evidence for discussions such as, gender stereotypes, differentiation (Singapore Maths does not promote differentiation), competition, small classes/ small schools, I could go on. But for now, our school community celebrates; our school community is proud; and our winners glow, heads bowed with humility, quietly bursting at the seams.

HEAD’S

DIARY

ANDREW FORBES, Head of the Falcons Pre-Preparatory School for Boys in Chiswick, reflects on his charges’ recent 7+ success where nearly every boy has achieved a place at their first-choice destination school.

‘O

ne of the key factors to the success of our pupils is that we are a boys only school. Whilst we have very strong links with our sister school, the Falcons School for Girls in Putney, with whom we arrange frequent visits, in terms of facilitating day to day learning, we know how to really switch our boys on. We employ a variety of strategies that ensure we are connecting and engaging with them at all points of their learning, strategies that I feel we would not be able to implement as effectively if we were a co-ed school. As a Head who has a slightly competitive streak, I am constantly comparing the academic value-added scores in English, maths and reading of our boys against themselves, their peers, the national and independent averages and of boys against girls. In almost every case, especially at this young age, it is fair to say that girls are far ahead of boys. In my experience, girls mature quicker than boys in their Early Years and are able to learn and apply their phonics to writing and reading in a more timely fashion than boys. Not only, due to their maturity, are they able to read and write more quickly, but they are able to understand and process what they are reading more effectively. At the Falcons Pre-Prep, we fully acknowledge this difference and embrace ways to get our boys reading and writing to the highest possible level with a good understanding of what they are reading. Whilst boys at this age really excel in their maths, science, IT and sports, they take more time to accumulate the skills to keep the same trajectory as girls in writing and reading. We take from the national curriculum what we think boys would like to learn about and then we write our own proprietary schemes of work (including reading schemes) around topics or subjects which we think will entice boys to read and write. In terms of defining our reading schemes, we even involve our own school council’s help to ensure that we really are stocking the books that they like, not what we think they will like! 24 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

SCHOOL QUIZ

SCHOOL TOURS AT ARTSED

We speak to Silvana Silva, Head of NHEHS Juniors, who this year celebrates 30 years at the school. Three words to describe your pupils. My girls are quite simply, amazing, happy and assured!

KING’S HOUSE SCHOOL NURSERY CELEBRATES 10 YEARS

What’s the key to academic success? Feeling happy and secure in their school and being inspired by great teachers. This is a powerful combination to get right and now with many years working within the education sector, I can honestly say that getting these two ingredients right is, without a doubt, the secret to academic and also personal success more generally. How do the girls achieve without feeling the pressure? This really comes down to great pastoral care. Our class teachers really know our girls and they are absolutely brilliant at sorting out any issues – they are supportive, kind and importantly, make them think. We provide an environment where our girls can relate to each other, their peers and their wider community and this communication gives them the confidence to achieve independently and for themselves. What’s the best part about your job? Being with the girls who generally are funny and entertaining – but also sharing their early academic journey with them and seeing them blossom, is what makes this job beyond worthwhile. When I see the girls off in Year 6 – nearly all joined us in reception – and seeing just how ready they are to take their next steps into our Senior school, is always a proud moment for me. It’s why I love my job. Is it difficult to keep parents happy? It’s important to form a partnership with parents. They are putting a huge amount of trust into us as a school – and as their educators – and we do the best possible job we can for their girls. We all want the same thing for our children – we want them to be 26 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

King’s House School Nursery is celebrating its 10th anniversary. Celebrations included a very special birthday party for the current Nursery children who were joined by the ‘class of 2009’. ‘It was wonderful to see how the older children had grown and flourished over the last 10 years,’ observed Head of Nursery Jane O’Brien ‘and how kind and gentle they were with the younger boys and girls’. Head of King’s House Mark Turner said ‘we are very proud of our Nursery. It is an important part of the School community.’

happy. The girls always come first. How are you planning to celebrate your 30 years with NHEHS? Well I’ve been thinking about how things have changed over the past 30 years – for me personally but also within the wider world – and as well as this, what the constant has been. In assemblies we have been looking at significant events that happened in 1989 (when I joined NHEHS) including from how technology has changed, the fall of the Berlin Wall and the lessons we can learn from that to celebrating 30 years of Elmer the Elephant! Otherwise it’s business as usual. What would you like your legacy to be? When the girls I’ve taught look back at their time at NHEHS in years to come, what I’d love them to say is “what a great time we had”, “what special friendships we made”. That the skills and knowledge we gave them really set them up for their future. I want them to look back on this time and remember that amazing feeling they had when they were at school here. That really would be the biggest compliment.

FALCONS SCHOOL FOR GIRLS LAUNCHES MUSIC SCHOLARSHIP Putney-based Falcons School for Girls is offering girls across the local area the chance to apply for a music scholarship. Girls in Y3, both current and non-current pupils, will benefit from free first class music tuition throughout their time at the school as well as the opportunity to enjoy school life at Falcons. The award is open to string and woodwind players working towards or beyond Grade 3 standard. Singers are also encouraged to apply, but they must be willing to take up a second instrument.

LET’S GO OUTSIDE

Tours of St James Nursery take place weekly, with stay and play taster sessions of Fun in the Forest beginning in the Summer term. For more information contact www.stjamesprep.org.uk

We all know that kids benefit from being turned out into the fresh air. Schools and nurseries are now getting in on the act, with increasing numbers building outdoor learning into their curriculum.

PHOTOS St James Forest School

If you go down to the woods today, you’re quite likely to find a gaggle of nurseryaged children. Both educators and parents are seeing the benefits of taking children out of the classroom and putting them in an environment where they can explore, create and start to make independent decisions. A study by Plymouth University in 2016 backed this, stating that educators should be encouraged to incorporate aspects of an outdoor education into the curriculum. The Nursery at St James Prep School, which opens in September, will be doing just that with its daily Fun in the Forest sessions. Headmistress of St James Prep, Catherine Thomlinson is, naturally, delighted at the prospect: “Connecting with nature and playing in the fresh air is so critical to a child’s health and wellbeing. This is particularly true for children living in London who often lead lives so removed from the natural world. Educating children about nature, right from their very first days at nursery, heightens their understanding of its importance and the role they play in preserving it.” As well as the understanding of our place in the world, the Plymouth University report grouped the likely outcomes of outdoor learning into five categories: • A healthy, happy body and mind • A sociable, confident person • A self-directed and creative learner

• An effective contributor • An active global citizen In her experiences so far, Ms Thomlinson would agree with the outcomes. “As well as the sense of wellbeing, which comes from running around in the fresh air, we have found that it is a highly stimulating environment for the children, especially in the early years, in which they really come into their own. For our new nursery children, running and discovering new bugs with their friends, experiencing the daily changes in nature and building dens, will build upon innate skills such as problem solving, communication, selfconfidence and risk taking. Across town, Little Forest Folk are preparing to open their sixth outdoor nursery in just under four years. The Twickenham site will welcome children from April. The vision is to create opportunities for children to be outdoors playing freely and exploring in the fresh air, much as founders Leanna and James Barrett had done when they were small. C.O.O. of Little Forest Folk, Lisa Behan: “We believe that all children can benefit from being outside, learning through their play, being physically more active and engaging in risky-play. Within just a few weeks of children starting with us in the forest, we see such a difference in their development and by the time they leave us, they are confident, creative, kind and resilient little learners.”

But what happens when children head to primary school? How can parents continue this love for the outdoor environment? Lisa Behan admits that it’s an area that they’re trying to address. “This is something that’s very close to our hearts and we think about it all the time, as we want the children to continue to be active, curious and full of wonder even after they leave us. Many of our parents now choose to have their child stay in the forest for another year and join our Jaybirds group before heading off to primary school in year one. But our dream is to open our very own primary school where we can continue to offer an outdoor learning environment and we hope that this dream will become a reality later this year.”

BOOK REVIEW

2019 has some fantastic books in store. We bring you a selection here, AND we’re giving away a copy of each one to help celebrate our 5th birthday. Head to our website to find out how to win www.citykidsmagazine.co.uk

THE WALL IN THE MIDDLE OF THE BOOK by John Agee £12.99 (Scallywag Press) This is the story of a little knight who is very happy that his wall protects him from the dangers that are sure to lurk on the other side. However, he is too busy mending a hole in his wall to notice the mounting dangers on his own side. This is funny and has plenty to keep readers occupied when they read the book over and again. And I wonder how many books for children are endorsed by Amnesty International?

THE LEGEND OF KEVIN: A ROLY-POLY FLYING PONY ADVENTURE by Philip Reeve, illustrated by Sarah McIntyre £6.99 (OUP) Plenty of humorous illustrations and a story that had our not-so-keen reader engrossed until he’d finished. Characters Kevin, a rotund pony, and Max, share a love of biscuits and embark on an adventure to save Max’s home town, soon to be submerged by water. Funny and high-spirited.

ALL THE WAYS TO BE SMART

THE MEGA MAGIC HAIR SWAP

by Davina Bell, illustrated by Allison Colpoys £11.99 (Scribe)

by Rochelle Humes, illustrated by Rachel Suzanne £6.99 (Studio Press)

A picture book for children who worry about tests or school performance. “Smart is not just ticks and crosses, smart is building boats from boxes, Printing patterns, wheeling wagons, being mermaids, riding dragons”. This is the third book from Bell and Colpoys, celebrating what makes children who they are.

BIG KIDS

LITTLE KIDS

BABIES & PRE-SCHOOLERS

by VICTORIA EVANS

FERDINAND MAGELLAN: LITTLE GUIDES TO GREAT LIVES by Isabel Thomas, illustrated by Dàlia Adillon £8.99 (April 2019) (Laurence King) Ferdinand Magellan led the first expedition to sail all the way around the world, encountering lands and creatures that he could never have imagined. This, and Anne Frank, are the latest in the Little Guides to Great Lives series, accessible guides introducing children to inspirational figures from history.

The first book from The Saturdays star Rochelle Humes celebrates differences and how to love yourself just the way you are. Inspired by her daughter who asked why all princesses had straight hair, Rochelle has written a story about two friends (one with curly hair, and the other with straight) who think the other has perfect hair.

THE CLOSEST THING TO FLYING by Gill Lewis £6.99 (OUP) Award-winning author, Gill Lewis, tells the story of two young women, one in the present day and one from the nineteenth century. Semira is an Eritrean refugee, and Hen is a repressed Victorian girl, but they both find courage to fight for what they believe in. The Closest Thing to Flying covers discrimination, friendship and empowerment set against a backdrop of women’s rights.

Home Away From Home Just an hour away from London lies Heckfield Place, a Georgian country home where you can get away from it all for a day, or for a stay. And if that wasn’t enough of an incentive, The Assembly is a year-long series of curated events for families and adults (if you want to get away without the littlees). There are monthly Kids’ Mud and Guts Adventures as well as yoga, wine tasting and talks. There’s so much to explore that you may want to stay the night, though note that children can’t stay in the house, though the rooms that are offered to families are still luxurious.

Rural Retreat Only an hour’s drive from London, yet seemingly a world away, the self-catering cottages at Daylesford are a rural idyll for anyone wants to escape to the country but not have to deal with too much mud. Located in a picture-perfect setting, you’ll find six beautifully decorated cottages just steps away from the foodie heaven that is the Daylesford Farm shop and the Haybarn Spa. Try out the cookery school

or head off for a walk on the many trails around the farm – just make sure you end up at their sister pub the Wild Rabbit in the nearby village of Kingham. Daylesford love welcoming children and run an annual family festival (the 8th of June this year) which has become a highlight in the Cotswolds calendar – the ideal time to visit en famille.

WHO CITY ARE? KIDS AS CITY KIDS MAGAZINE TURNS FIVE, WE ASKED SOME OF THE TEAM THE QUESTIONS WE NORMALLY RESERVE FOR OUR GUESTS.

IA EVANS

VI

How did you get into magazines? One day, I decided to create one. Simple as that. A steep learning curve, highs, lows and decent amount of fun and stress, we’re still here five years later, bucking the trend of publishing closures. What does a day with City Kids entail? Emails, so many emails. But, more often than not, meeting super talented people from a range of backgrounds who inspire me to keep going. What does the future hold? World domination for City Kids. And a few gin and tonics. Favourite date night location? We’re little piggies in our house, so a date night would have to involve food, preferably without ceremony. Flesh & Buns is a current favourite, but closer to home, Thai 101 is a perfect reminder of a far-flung holiday. Favourite day out with the kids? One which doesn’t require nagging or refereeing. Where do you love to shop? Like date nights, my favourite shops involve food. Browsing the shelves at Italian delis takes me back to my university days, and if my Spanish mother-in-law’s provisions run out, I head to Garcia & Sons in Ladbroke Grove. And I’m like an over-excited spaniel when I go to Ichiba at Westfield. An escape to Japan, without the air fare or jet lag. Away from food, Liberty always has the wow factor for me. Tell us something nobody knows about you? I was quite a handy lacrosse goalkeeper back in the day. What would you take to a desert island? My family and plenty of food (of course). 50 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

INE HAYE How did you get into design? Does knitting intricate jumper designs when I was a teenager count?

What does a day with City Kids entail? It depends on what stage we are at. When we are just starting a new issue, I will take all my time getting inspiration and working out the best layout and design. As the print deadline looms nearer, it’s all frantic email exchanges, last minute corrections and a fair dose of stress. What does the future hold? I need to apply for Settled Status (sorry to bring this up). After over 25 years of living and paying taxes in the UK, marrying a Briton and having children here, I thought I was pretty settled! Favourite date night location? The Tabbard and the shows at ArtsEd are some of our favourite destinations for a date night. Favourite day out with the kids? We like to make the most of living in London and take in one of the many exhibitions on offer at the Royal Academy, Tate Modern or The Serpentine... We don’t do it so often that the children get bored. Where do you love to shop? I have neither the time nor much inclination for shopping. I enjoy Chiswick High Road for regular retail therapy. Tell us something nobody knows about you? I did the Tour de France. Not cycling but selling the Tour’s official t-shirt to roadside spectators as part of the publicity caravan. What would you take to a desert island? My Kindle, pre-loaded with an entire library of books. Never alone or bored with a book.

TURNER

How did you get into magazines? I always knew I wanted to be a journalist so as soon as I left university. I went straight into newspapers. My first job in London was at the Daily Mail and after that I went on to write for lots of different publications - from the Times and the Mirror to glossy mags such as Grazia and Red. After I had my children I specialised in parenting – always good to write about what you know. What does a day with City Kids entail? The best bit of what I do is writing features that parents will find useful and interesting so I’m always thinking about ideas and creating content for our magazine and website. It could be a great child friendly travel piece or a profile of an amazing new kids’ clothing brand – no two days are ever the same and I really like that. What does the future hold? More of the same hopefully. I’m very happy doing what I’m doing. This is going to be an exciting year for City Kids – watch this space! Favourite date night location? Anywhere I can dress up. I spend so much of my time in yoga kit or jeans that I love an excuse to throw on a dress and heels. My favourite restaurants are Caza Cruz in Notting Hill, Sketch in Mayfair and The Petersham in Covent Garden. Favourite day out with the kids? Last year I took my boys to watch the Twenty20 cricket at The Oval for the first time and they loved it so we will be doing that again this summer. A trip to Kidzania is always a hit and they adore the Science Museum – you’ll find me in the shop! Where do you love to shop? I’m a big fan of independent boutiques such as Katie and Jo on New Kings Road, Iris in Clapham or Feather & Stitch in Richmond. They always have a great selection of cool, lesser known brands. Online I love Matches, Rae Feather and Farfetch for special occasion buys. Tell us something nobody knows about you? I’m a trained interior designer with a serious cushion habit. What would you take to a desert island? A snorkel. I’m obsessed with swimming in the sea.
