ARE YOU IN OR OUT?

WHY YOU SHOULD LIVE IN LONDON

WELCOME

A

re you in or out? I’m not talking Brexit, Remain or the EU referendum but rather whether you are fully committed to a life in London. Sure, any time spent on Rightmove will convince you into thinking you could have a better life in the countryside, living in a manor house, surrounded by acres of land and waited on by staff. But are we forgetting what it means to live in the city? Sophie Clowes thinks city life rocks and tells us why the capital is the best place to raise our kids. In a neat segue, we’re shining the spotlight on things to do in the big smoke with the kids in the holidays – from the best STEAM venues in London, to secret gardens in Surrey. And children’s entertainment experts Sharky & George share their ideas for alleviating boredom in the airport, on the beach and in the car.

BEVERLEY TURNER

IN PRAISE OF FATHERHOOD If you believe the mainstream media, all mothers can be categorised: Tiger Mum is pushy, competitive and basking in the reflected glory of her twins; Feral Mum slides out of bed after a night of online gambling and has a cigarette for breakfast. Gym mum arrives at the school gates in Lycra every single day, exercising to stave off the crushing boredom of having nothing else to do and PTA mum treats pick-up as though she was a middle-manager in retail, checking that everyone is ‘on the same page’ about the summer fair. We may squirm, uncomfortably recognising some of the types, but these labels remain horribly reductive, failing to acknowledge the blood, sweat and gin we expend just doing our bloody best. Dads, however, get off lightly.

of laundry or the unstacked dishwasher. They wouldn’t mind me revealing that they send pictures of the pint they’re enjoying in the sunshine while baby snoozes in the pram or witty remarks on the lunacy of music classes. They feel no guilty conscience about truly enjoying and basking in their time with the baby.

... because parenting is still seen primarily as ‘women’s work’ which actually does many modern dads a huge dis-service.

There are no equivalent tags to describe men who spend so long in the office that they only see their kids in weekend daylight (‘Banker dad’) or those who choose golf over cheering their kid from the side-lines (‘It’s-all-about-me dad’) or dads who teach masculinity through a good slap and a crying ban (‘Bulldog dad’). These labels don’t exist (they do now!) because parenting is still seen primarily as ‘women’s work’, which actually does many modern dads a huge dis-service. Fathers have never been as hands-on as they are today. It starts in ante-natal classes such as the ones I run, where they quiz midwives on the exact composition of amniotic fluid, and continues at birth where they’re calm, supportive and kind. They help interview nannies and attend each school tour, helping ease the burden of responsibility for their partners. More and more men are taking their full allowance of shared paternity leave. And we women can learn a lot from them.

They know it’s challenging and draining and occasionally boring but they also know this luxury of time with their child is finite. And their female partners aren’t furious about the unmade beds when they come home from the office – they’re grateful of having a hubby who truly understands what it’s like to have sole charge of their little human for 12 hours. When dads are involved from the start it brings couples closer. And as they grow older, they’ll make brilliant ‘Dolphin dads’ – this is the one daddy label that’s gathering momentum: a concept developed by Harvard Psychologist Shawn Achor who refers to the fact that dolphins raise children by a “playful, intelligent, social” approach to communication and discipline. Because dolphins teach their young by swimming alongside and having fun, ‘dolphin dads’ are likely to be found kicking a ball with their kids, having a pillow fight or playing a computer game with them. We mums often watch these sort of activities from the side-line while sorting out the white wash from the colours. When we play our kids games, we tell them that we value things other than academic achievements and are interested in joining their world.

‘Dolphin dads’ – this is the one daddy label that’s gathering momentum.

The WhatsApp messages of The Blooming Bunch dads who take a career break are about liberation. They don’t lament the pile

Fathers will only have fully arrived on the parenting scene once there is a whole list of offensive nicknames to sum up their inadequacies. Until then, keep it up fellas – you’re doing a great job.

CITY VS COUNTRY HOW LONDON WINS by SOPHIE CLOWES

“When are you moving out of London?” This question seems to emerge annually at the first frantic pulling on of last year’s shorts and t-shirts. The sun shines and with it an inference that country dwelling is a wholesome and therefore better choice for families. It’s not only friends and family who pose the question but many Londoners themselves. And for good reason, the quest for a perfect life, fuelled by Instagram feeds of England’s green and pleasant land, rattles even the most entrenched London family. While there are those who fall resolutely into the rural camp or the urban one, there are many more who mentally occupy a middle ground, wishing they could cherry-pick the best of both worlds. While taking brown envelopes from neither estate agent nor tourist board, here is how and why the capital is the place to raise your kids. A SUCCESSION OF LITTLE VILLAGES When out-of-towners discover we live in this amazing city, they think we live in the City, or, at least, at Piccadilly Circus. Our corner of West London is, in fact, a little village and your corner might be another. This green and leafy metropolis is a succession of such little villages and those in the privileged west are spoilt by the river, parks and square gardens that are our playgrounds. In fact, West London’s proximity to both the West End and the West Country makes it the perfect middle ground. London is a (if not the) big cheese as far as global cities go. As one friend put it, “Ultimately, whatever anyone says, London still, and always will, utterly rock!” The culturally rich, cosmopolitan, tolerant, each-to-their-own, prevailing London attitude means our children are racially colour-blind, linguistically flexible and wholly accepting of human life in its myriad forms. They are aware of their tiny but vital stitch in the vibrant London blanket. They are happy inhabitants of one of the most famous cities in the world, where there are important life lessons around every corner. Property prices aside (I realise I’m sidestepping the big one here), London living has some financially favourable 12 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

advantages over a move out. This city is where the big bucks are made and London jobs pay more (for the most part) than elsewhere. You only need one car (and die-hard urbanites not seeking rural respite might argue even one is superfluous). The human warmth (literal and metaphorical) of 8.6 million+ people means the capital’s ambient temperature is always higher than elsewhere, which in turn means cheaper heating bills. And the gardens, oh our city’s glorious oases of green cost us nothing more (in time or money) than the taxes we are obliged to pay anyway. The outstanding State schools, world-class hospitals, and leading galleries and museums are ours for the taking. And when the city calls us to part with our cash, it’s often to buy the best the world can offer, be it food, theatre or yoga teachers. FITTER CHILDREN The real clincher for city living is our connection to our environment and how we move within it. Paradoxical though it may seem, our children may be physically fitter and more engaged in their surroundings than their country counterparts. They walk, scoot or bike everywhere, noticing the changing

FEATURE

© Royal Parks

seasons and life form around them. They absorb the awesomeness of their city while being in it, as opposed to being driven through it, and, as such, enjoy untold freedom. They are streetwise and peoplewise, engaging with their fellow Londoners, who are true citizens of the world. Out-of-towners, on the other hand, risk being hostages to their cars, whether it’s the school run, the city commute or, worse, both. When we start on this crazy parental journey, there is comfort to be sought in pushing buggies together, in walking off the baby blues and blubber, sheltering in cafes, popping into shops and each other’s houses and playing in the park. There is solidarity in numbers. As our newborns grow, we are able to grow through opportunity. As our children develop independence, we are able to maintain our own. Living in London doesn’t make our children pallid or unhealthy. Nor does it render them more money-oriented or spoilt. On the contrary, our leafy corner of the capital enables them to live happy, well-adjusted, social childhoods, to become true citizens of the world. Who doesn’t like a bike ride where the start, middle or end involves an ice cream? The diversity of life is ours for the taking. Everyone can become someone and normal is an expansive word that encompasses food from the four corners of the world, football to free running, fine art to flamenco shows. As another friend enthused, “all

the ‘old’ people I meet in London are so alive and interesting.” Variety really is the spice of life. THE BEST OF ALL WORDS But what of that summer need to escape the city? Nowhere are there more opportunities for summer schools and courses, relaxation and entertainment for our children, with or without us, than in London. But sometimes swimming in the Serpentine before work (really, you should try it) or weekend picnicking in Isabella Plantation in Richmond Park (you haven’t been? You must!) don’t feed the need for a rural fix. While living in the capital grants us the best of all worlds for most of the year, there is always a need to duck out and enjoy a different sort of life, just for a while. Time then to sweat your assets. If you are one of the lucky ones who owns your London home (let’s continue to sidestep the monstrous property expense conundrum), there’s a high chance you can make money renting it out. And when the last of the summer rosé has been drunk and day-to-day family life must resume, London is where it’s at. For, as Samuel Johnson said (in less gender-enlightened times), ‘Why, Sir, you find no man, at all intellectual, who is willing to leave London. No, Sir, when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life; for there is in London all that life can afford.” There, then, is my response to that pesky moving out question. SHARKY & GEORGE

BATTLING HOLIDAY BOREDOM WHETHER ON THE BEACH OR IN THE AIRPORT, SHARKY & GEORGE ARE HERE TO HELP

Running an average of 60 children’s parties every week throughout the year we’ve begun to know a trick or two. Our fantastic team of ‘older brother and sister’ figures are mischievous, energetic and imaginative, especially when it comes to finding the fun in airport lounges and the boring car journeys whilst you’re eagerly waiting to get to the beach! Departure Lounge If you’ve never tried Departure Lounge Olympics and then it’s about time you had a game: FASTEST TIME TO RETURN to the ‘Grandstand’ with a full cup of water. FASTEST TIME TO HOP around the departure lounge on one foot FASTEST TIME TO GALLOP around the departure lounge like a horse. WHO CAN GET THE MOST SIGNATURES from airport staff in 10 minutes. SUNGLASSES SHOT: Best photo of you trying on the biggest and silliest sunglasses you can find in one of the airport shops. BUM-SHUFFLE RACE: Each shuffler sits on the floor at the start line holding onto both feet, which should be touching each other at the heels. When the starter says “GO”, the shufflers have to race to the finish line as fast as they possibly can. It is essential that both feet remain in contact with each other throughout the race and that both hands stay holding onto their feet. In transit When you’re in transit there are tonnes more games to keep yourself occupied such as PARENT PORTRAITS, THUMB WARS, EYE SPY, PAPER AEROPLANE DISTANCE COMPETITION, DESIGN YOUR OWN DOT TO DOT, CAR TWISTER (the driver picks for the

passengers, e.g. left foot window!) and SITTING HIDE AND SEEK (use your imagination and hide yourself– everyone then guesses where you might be – you can only answer yes or no questions). On the beach Once you finally arrive at your destination and the sun is hopefully shining there is even more endless fun to be had. You can get a photo-trickography photo almost anywhere. The beach offers up so many great games and activities such as: MORPH: Bury your dad (not his head) and build him a mermaid tail or give him boobs if you like! BUILD A SANDMAN: Just like a snowman, but with sand. DRIBBLE CASTLES: Jazz up your normal sandcastle with a dribble castle (lots of wet sand!) TOWEL RACE: Imagine that the sand is a burning river of lava and you need to cross it to get to the ice cream. GIANT SAND NOUGHTS AND CROSSES BEACH BOWLING: You’ll need a tennis ball or a coconut and some empty bottles and make yourself a sand alley. SAND ANGELS: Just like snow angels but a little messier. DEMOLITION: Using flat rocks, build the highest tower possible by balancing them on top of each other. Use sand as cement then agree who is going to demolish each tower and go find a good handful of rocks and choose a fair distance before you start trying to demolish the tower! SAND VEHICLES: Who can make the best sand vehicles to drive around in. If you’ve exhausted this list then take a look at Don’t You Dare which is jam packed with more exciting games to play. www.sharkyandgeorge.com/about-us/our-book.php CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 19

10 TIPS

THE FESTIVAL SEASON WITH KIDS by VICTORIA EVANS

1.

Four seasons in one day - We all know what the weather is like in the UK so don’t pack light for a festival. You are not on holiday, you are not going abroad! Keep a bag separate for wet weather days with extra dry clothes for everyone. You can even keep it in the car so that you can make sure it stays dry.

2.

Take some friends - Great for babysitting as you can take it in turns for any late night performances you want to see, plus the kids will have other little friends to play with.

3.

Do not forget the do-do - Or whatever comforter your child needs to go to sleep. Many families have left their £400 weekend early because of a missing teddy.

4.

Snacks - Are a godsend, hungry kids are not. Queues for food can test even the most Zen. And you’ll be saving money as you go.

5.

Plan for losing your child - Sounds harsh but we’ve all lost sight of our kids at some point. A festival situation will stress you out more. Write your mobile number on their arm. Check you have mobile reception. Take photos of your child each day so that you have a ready description available should they go missing. Discuss with them a meeting point or plan if they get separated from you.

6.

Make the most of activities - There is so much for kids to do, so try to have a hit list so that everyone feels they’re getting a look in. However, see tip 7.

7.

Ditch the routine - Go with the flow for once or you won’t be able to chill and enjoy the shows.

8.

Baby wipes are king - You’re a parent so you’ve probably worked this out already, but take a year’s supply with you. Also a small bag of plasters, antiseptic and Calpol.

9.

Ear defenders - They’re available for kids and worth it if you end up near the sound system for Fat Boy Slim or Reggie n Bollie.

10. Take fairy lights - You probably won’t be thinking about decorating your tent, but it’s worth it. Bunting, fairy lights and fake flowers all work and with battery operated LED lights all the rage you won’t need electricity! © Camp Bestival CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK 21

FOOD BY JO PRATT FIG, SERRANO AND CURD CHEESE SALAD WITH HONEY DRESSING Assembling a sharing plate like this is such a simple and delicious way to celebrate wonderfully ripe figs, salty cured ham, full flavoured curd cheese and honey. This is the perfect recipe to serve any time of the day, whether it be for brunch, lunch or starter.

SERVES 4 12-16 figs, depending on their size 12-16 slices Serrano ham 200g sheep’s curd cheese, or ricotta if unavailable 2 sprigs fresh oregano 4 tbsp extra virgin olive oil juice of ½ lemon 1 tbsp honey (try a flavoured one such as thyme, lavender or orange blossom) salt and freshly ground black pepper 1. Cut the figs in quarters and sit onto plates. Lay slices of ham in between the figs. Spoon the curd cheese into the middle. 2. To make the dressing, strip the leaves off the oregano stalks and roughly chop. Place half in a bowl and mix with the olive oil, lemon juice, honey, and season with salt and pepper. 3. Drizzle the dressing over the top of the salad, scatter over the remaining oregano and serve.

PADRÓN PEPPERS (PIMIENTOS DE PADRÓN) SERVES 4 2 tbsp olive oil

These are traditionally Spanish, though widely available everywhere now, particularly during the summer months. The thing I love about these little green peppers is that, every so often, you come across a fiery one, making it like a game of Russian Roulette when you eat them. Cook as a tasty pre-dinner nibble or part of a tapas selection. 1.

Heat a frying pan or wok over a medium heat. Add the oil.

2.

Add the peppers and fry over a medium heat for about 4-5 minutes, tossing and shaking the pan every once in a while, until you see the skin of the peppers blister and they appear to be shrinking.

3.

Sprinkle fairly generously with sea salt and serve hot. Grab them by the stalk, take a bite and see if you’ve a feisty one or not. Either way, they are simply delicious.

STRAWBERRIES

W

ith summer upon us and temperatures rising (well... let’s hope so), our appetite changes somewhat and we tend to crave lighter foods such as fresh fruits, salads and healthier dishes. This is the ideal time to get creative, spend less time cooking and more time assembling simple dishes with fresh ingredients. Preparing a sharing plate like this this fig salad is such a simple and delicious way to celebrate wonderfully ripe figs, salty cured ham, full flavoured curd cheese and fragrant honey. This is the perfect recipe to serve any time of the day, whether it be for brunch, lunch or starter. And if you’re planning a trip out to pick your own strawberries or, like me, you automatically add them to your shopping list as soon as the British season starts, then why not serve them with this amazing cashew cream. It’s lower in saturated fat than dairy cream, high in calcium and zinc, which are great for your immune system and skin. This healthier twist to the classic British dessert of strawberries and cream will go down a treat with all the family. Enjoy and have a great summer!

WITH VANILLA CASHEW CREAM SERVES 4 PREPARATION TIME 5 minutes + 2 hours soaking 400g / 14oz ripe strawberries

For the vanilla cashew cream

150g / 5.oz / ¼ cups cashew nuts

a few basil leaves, finely shredded (optional)

seeds from 1 vanilla pod/bean

juice of ½ lime

CREATIVE AND

EDUCATIONAL GAMING (it does exist)

by CHRISTEN JAMAR

What screens and access to technology mean for our children is perhaps one of the most challenging questions for a parent today. The worry that it can incite is almost palpable - bring up the topic of screentime at a parents-get-together and you can immediately feel the collective anxiety. When, how much, and what to do are a constant negotiation; and personally, I have, more than once, (almost) considered binning the screens just to head off one more argument; one more over-stimulated child reacting hysterically to a small request.

But the thing is, I know that technology can offer children incredible opportunities for learning, for creativity, and for connectivity. Not just in explicitly educational ways, but in the everyday. I’m immensely grateful for smart phones and iPads when my kids spend an hour Skyping with family and friends overseas. I appreciate it when they ask me how high Mount Everest is, or how old the Karate Kid is, or why David Bowie is important (all incredibly important points of enquiry), I can turn to Wikipedia, IMDB or Spotify.

It’s also important to seek out apps and games that encourage community and creativity. To that end, we’re grateful to Joshua Davidson, Managing Director of the creative educational game Night Zookeeper, who has suggested some games that offer very real educational creative opportunities.

DIY.org An online community where kids can learn from and teach other kids through posted videos and photographs. Highly monitored to keep the community safe and constructive, the site offers kids a place to post their work, learn new skills, and accept new challenges. Children can earn badges in dozens of different skills, including writing, archery, baking, app development and botany, to name a few.

MEETING DEMAND: NEW SCHOOLS FOR WEST LONDON by CHRISTEN JAMAR balance is precarious at best: London Councils forecasts that schools in the capital will need to find 35,000 new secondary places and 78,000 new primary places by 2020. Even where students have a place, it’s likely not to be the school they wanted. Nearly half of all Hammersmith & Fulham secondary applicants missed out on their preferred school last year, while approximately a third in the other three boroughs settled for less than first choice. The statistics at the primary level were slightly better with between 17 percent and 26 percent of families not getting their first choices in all but Kensington & Chelsea, where over 40 percent of families missed their preferred school. For many of us, there is no question that is more likely to have us reaching for that glass of wine than that of schools. The wheres, the whys, the how-did-you-get-a-place-THERE? It’s a conversation that’s both endlessly fascinating and excruciatingly boring. At CK HQ we get it. We’re shepherding our kids through this system (“it’s not a system; it’s chaos!” one expert said), and we’ve had more than one sleepless night wondering if we’re leading them down the best path. So, in an effort to pick our way through the labyrinth, we thought we’d speak to the schools themselves. Not just any schools, either, but new schools that are just starting out in this West London educational landscape that often feels more Dali than Turner. We’ve turned to two schools from starkly opposing corners of the picture: Ealing Fields, a new free secondary that is opening in September; and Falkner House Boys’ School, a pre-prep independent for boys, starting in Kensington in September 2017, which aims to follow in the ambitious footsteps of the eponymous girls’ school. These schools’ heads will write a diary entry starting in the Autumn, providing a snapshot of what its like on the other side of the school gates. Meanwhile, we thought we’d confront the chaos head-on, to try to make sense of the West London educational picture.

THE STATE SECTOR AND SCHOOL PLACES The great cloud hanging over the state sector is the scarcity of school places. According to the school census, Hammersmith & Fulham, Kensington & Chelsea, Ealing and Hounslow had a small surplus of secondary places in 2015, while, of those boroughs only Hounslow came up short—by about 70 places—for primary. That 28 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

This adds another layer of complexity to the issue of school places. Some new space is created through community school expansion, but much more new space is available through the creation of new free schools and academies, often in places where parents are unhappy with the current availability, but not necessarily where there is the greatest needs, according to Susan Hamlyn, director of The Good Schools Guide Educational Consultants (www.goodschoolsguide.co.uk). Aside from funding issues, any school growth requires actual space, and there’s a dramatic shortage of available sites. “It’s all very well for a bureaucrat to tick a box to open a new school but if there is no location, it’s pretty meaningless,” Hamlyn told City Kids. Schools have had to move from temporary site to temporary site as they search and/or wait for a permanent option to become available. Even for those successful new schools - the most obvious example being West London Free School - the starting is a hard slog. In May, West London Free School’s founder Toby Young told Schools Week, “I was very critical of England’s public education system under the last Labour government, and I hadn’t grasped how difficult it is to do better, and to bring about system-wide improvement.” According to Hamlyn, among the many challenges that schools face is meeting the needs of a hugely diverse population in an environment of crippling budget cuts; recruiting teachers, particularly in maths and sciences, in an area of the country where the cost of living is so high; and coping, of course, with evergrowing student numbers. Still, she says, schools are, for the most part, managing “magnificently,” adding that the key to a successful new school is “making the school feel like a community in which everybody has equal importance. There are disaffected children, but if you give them a sense of community, [make them feel] that their school is proud of them, you see results.”

EDUCATION INDEPENDENT SCHOOLS IN DEMAND Despite rising fees and increased competition, demand in the independent sector seems insatiable. “You could open an independent school in a cowshed, and it would fill in a minute,” Hamlyn quips, adding that, in West London, demand is particularly high for co-ed and boys schools. The challenges for a family traversing the independent sector, though perhaps less complicated than the state sector, are still daunting as the choice of school opens up questions of tutoring, facilities, and appropriateness for the child. Still, Hamlyn says that fear of a place shortage in the independent sector is largely unfounded. Instead, there’s often a mismatch between the parent’s desired schools; and the schools where that child will do well. “There are plenty of good schools in London that are not called St. Paul’s, and if [parents] are realistic about their child, then we can always find a place,” she says.

EALING FIELDS HIGH SCHOOL

FALKNER HOUSE BOYS’ SCHOOL Falkner House Girls’ School in Kensington has established a strong reputation for academic excellence since it opened in 1954. It aims to replicate this when it opens Falkner House Boys’ School in September 2017. Very much a family school (the expansion is exclusively family-backed), the headteacher Eleanor Dixon is granddaughter of Falkner House founder Flavia Nunes; her mother Anita Griggs will be principal of both schools; and her sister Flavia Rogers is head of the girls’ school. As such, the boys’ school will follow the same educational philosophy as the girls’. Chosen after an assessment, 36 boys over two classes will start in Reception, with additional classes being added in subsequent years to complete the school. The school focuses on small group teaching sessions - “small schools for small children” - to ensure understanding of academic concepts. It is also anti-tutoring, aiming to meet each student’s needs during the school day. Though on separate sites, girls and boys will share special events and have shared IT lessons, a particular focus of the school.

In 2012, parents in South Ealing responded to the very real worry of an impending shortage of secondary school places by seeking support for a new local free school. Support came in spades— informational meetings were standing-room-only; Professor Guy Claxon, education expert of the Building Learning Power (BLP) programme, offered his input in 2013 (and is now the school’s patron). Then the Education Secretary Michael Gove praised the school’s ambitions at an Ealing Town Hall meeting in 2014. Ealing Fields is now ready to welcome its first cohort of 120 Year 7 students this coming September, and aims to foster a sense of community and adventure, encouraging an open dialogue with students while pushing them to take risks in learning. Headteacher Lee Faith will inaugurate the school with a four-strand curriculum of Academics, Innovation, Enrichment, and Citizenship. The BLP learning philosophy, which calls for teaching students to face challenges with courage, curiosity and integrity, is foundational to the school’s approach. As the Ealing Fields motto states; “Brave enough to listen to our hearts - bold enough to sharpen our minds.”

BOOK REVIEW

PRE-SCHOOL

Aimed at the pre-school age Animals Are Delicious, illustrated by Dave Ladd and Stephanie Anderson (Phaidon), is a collection of beautiful fold-out board books that focus on three animal food chains – land, sea and air. With the premise that ‘Everyone is hungry’, we learn that all creatures are somebody’s lunch somewhere down the line. Curious children everywhere will love these books as they’re illustrated in both colour and black and white, and give easy to remember facts about the plants and animals that inhabit the Earth.

JUNIOR

Harold’s Hungry Eyes by Kevin Waldron (Phaidon) is just a big win on so many levels. It tells the humorous tale of Harold, a Boston terrier (move over pugs) who spends his days dreaming about food and sleeping on his favourite chair.

Goodnight Tiger by Timothy Knapman and Laura Hughes (Little Tiger) is an endearing story of a young girl called Emily who cannot get to sleep. Why? Because the jungle animals on her wallpaper keep waking her up. Now, that’s an excuse I’ve never heard before. Still, they’re making a racket because they, too, can’t get to sleep, so it’s Emily job to get them all back to the land of nod.

For those who enjoyed the hugely successful Wonder by R J Palacio, The Bubble Boy by Stewart Foster (Simon & Schuster) is a natural choice. Joe is eleven years old and can’t remember a time when he wasn’t in hospital. He has a rare disorder called SCID and his life is spent living in a bubble. Even those who visit him carry the risk of contaminating him with life-threatening germs.

So as she encourages them to have a bath, hot chocolate and sings them lullabies she finds her efforts are fruitless until she reads them a bedtime story. A fun tale that reinforces the bedtime routine. A must for the little sleep thieves in your house.

As depressing as this book sounds, it’s an absolutely cracking read. You’ll experience just about every emotion possible as we’re introduced to Joe’s world, which goes from being lived in his dreams, to dealing with extreme loneliness. With only his sister for family, he finds friendship in the form of Henry, who has the same condition but they’ve only Skyped because Henry lives in America, and his new nurse Amir who is a striking character.

Except one day his world is rocked with the rude awakening that his chair has gone missing, and when he sees it being taken by the refuse collectors, it leads to a mission to find it. He ends up getting lost in the city, which not only makes him miss home, but makes him hungry! Bicycle tyres become pretzels, doorsteps become wafers, lorries look like cheese and before long Harold is absolutely insatiable. All is not lost as he eventually finds his way home, and there’s a lovely surprise waiting for him… This is the fourth picture book from Dublin-born artist Kevin Waldron who shares his studio with Oliver Jeffers and Jon Bergerman. Visually arresting with a zingy colour palate, this will firmly become a favourite. My only warning is I guarantee your audience will be hungry once hearing this story. 34 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

Heart-wrenching, moving, but full of hope.

by SHARON FRIED-JONES Sharon Fried-Jones is a west London mum, who by day is the Head of Marketing and Digital for the charity BookTrust which inspires a love of reading in children, and by night is an aspiring children’s author with a love of clashing clothes, picture books who longs for a good night’s sleep.

JUNIOR Fans of Diary of a Wimpy Kid will love Big Nate Blasts Off! by Lincoln Pierce, and as it’s had the seal of approval by Jeff Kinney himself that surely must mean it’s a hit. Big Nate has been around since the early nineties as it started off as a comic strip. Clearly Pierce has stuck true to his roots as there are illustrations on every page, meaning the jokes come thick and fast. When Nate gets a job on the school newspaper it’s a chance to showcase his artistic skills, that is until he makes fun of Randy, the toughest kid in school and then of course it’s no laughing matter. With most of the action taking place in a school setting most older children will find the various scrapes that Nate gets into funny even if shamelessly American but don’t let that put you off, it’s an easy read with plenty of chuckles along the way.

Red Witch by Anna McKerrow (Quercus) 13+

Rebel of the Sands by Alwyn Hamilton (Faber) 12+

It’s 2047, and Devon and Cornwall have voluntarily split themselves off from the rest of the UK to form the ecopagan Greenworld, a peaceful and self-contained counterpoint to the dystopian Redworld, governed by private security and at war for the last scraps of fuel left in the world. However, all is not as harmonious as it might be in the Greenworld, and after cursing a boy and girl for murdering the boy she loved, 17 year old witch Demelza Hawthorne runs away across the border to the Redworld in search of a new life.

Amani lives in Dustwalk, a violent and corrupt wild west-esque desert town she’s desperate to leave. Yet the desert plains are full of danger, and the Sultan’s enemies are on the rise. Yet when Amani meets the mysterious Jin, she finds a way out of the oppressive and threatening Dustwalk, only to find that running away from trouble brings her into contact with some terrifying opponents - and magical new friends - in her search for the Rebel Prince.

In once-magical Glastonbury, she meets the enigmatic and criminal Bran Crowley, who introduces her to the beauty and riches that the Redworld can offer to the right person; he’s looking for power, and Melz certainly has it. But will Melz be comfortable making a deal with the King of the Underworld? Demelza is a fabulously feisty yet sensitive protagonist as we see especially from her journal entries. The story is packed full of rounded characters that leap off the page, as well as the vivid portrayal of dramatic Cornish scenery, and the powerful vision of a dystopian Glastonbury. This book has it all - adventure, romance and real world magic. Anna McKerrow is a rising star in the UK YA scene – an absolute must-read.

Rebel of the Sands is an original and thrilling fantasy novel full of adventure, myth and magic. Amani is a fantastic heroine: brave, bold and witty. It’s a joy to immerse yourself in the fully developed world that Hamilton creates - a blend of the Wild West and Arabian Nights, with some killer comebacks and sharp dialogue between the sharpshooting, street-smart Amani and the hero and love interest Jin. The original mythology and legends woven into the world building are fascinating. It gives the story depth and authenticity, and the politics of Amani’s world are both familiar and foreign. Highly recommended.
