Peace of mind. The world can be a noisy place. That’s why children at St James practise ‘stillness’ and pause before and after every lesson. We see them calm down, refocus and head off to their next class buzzing with renewed energy. For parents, peace of mind comes from knowing your child will thrive academically and creatively in a warm, happy environment. Our pupils get great results. They just don’t get stressed about it. Please get in touch today to find out more about us or to arrange a visit.

BREASTFEEDING
“Who”
I ask my ante-natal course as they sit all fecund and fabulous in the pub, “wishes to breastfeed?” Invariably 100% of female hands go up (plus there’s always at least one dad who’s spotted a laugh). However, the UK has the worst breastfeeding rate in the world. The reasons for this are complex, but it is no coincidence that the figures have fallen in line with the number of post-natal hours bestowed on women by the NHS. Due to bizarre government guidelines, all information presented to pregnant women about breastfeeding must only extol its virtues. These pamphlets and posters must be ‘positive’ and ‘encouraging.’ It is forbidden for any of the literature to suggest that the process may be difficult or painful at times. The logic being that if you tell women it’s easy, then it will be. Consequently, we have a whole generation of women who have effectively been lied to. Worse still – they are told they must breastfeed but are commonly sent home within 24 hours to struggle alone. This is where the issue of ‘guilt’ arises to which new mums quite rightly kick back in anger and oppose the idea that ‘breast is best.’ It’s a bloody minefield in which everyone loses. Even the well-intentioned breastfeeding volunteers, supportive midwives and caring health visitors aren’t enough to stem the tide of women throwing in the muslin and reaching for the formula. There is no greater asset to a mum who wishes to breastfeed than time with an expert in the comfort of her own home. The Happy Birth Club’s breastfeeding rates were transformed to 100% once we offered a midwife home visit to our mums when their babies arrived. Having someone kneel by your bed as you learn how to create a good latch, how to get into the best positions for specific problems and how to
feed, wind and settle your baby is a godsend. But despite the significant long and short-term health benefits to women and babies, this isn’t something the government deems important. Much better to spend millions researching erectile dysfunction. Sadly, not all the health practitioners that new mums encounter will provide the best advice. Under “bollocks we’ve heard about breastfeeding” appear “your nipples are the wrong shape,” “your boobs are dry” (even though they had their baby 12 hours earlier and the milk isn’t in yet) or my favourite, “Your baby just doesn’t want to breastfeed.” That’s right, a new baby that was clearly looking for a chai latte rather than its mother’s familiar bosom. A stumbling block for many women is the boredom of being forced to sit still and ‘do nothing’ for several hours in a day. I tell our Happy Birth Club not to look this gift horse in the mouth: once they have a couple of kids and aren’t allowed to sit down for more than five consecutive minutes, they’ll wonder why they didn’t carry on breastfeeding until their child went to secondary school. You will never have a better excuse to sit down and watch the TV than when you’re breastfeeding. Do.
‘‘
Not. Feel. Guilty. About. This. You’re firing up your baby’s immune system for life. Five years ago, I received a text from a mum who had completed our course and moved back to New York, “Hey Bev,” she wrote, “my mum is doing the laundry, while Drew is cooking the dinner and I’m breastfeeding on the sofa. You were right - bfeeding rocks!” Of course, we also have the social stigma that still exists – the shock of perhaps glimpsing a bit of boob as a woman feeds her child in public. This is so insane that I can barely bring myself to acknowledge it. It’s only men with cultural confusion about breasts and their function that could view breastfeeding as anything other than entirely normal. This was beautifully summed up by my son, who, aged seven was playing in the sandpit in Chiswick Park as a woman fed her baby beside him under a ‘Hooter Hider’ – a type of tablecloth beneath which the mum holds her baby. Baffled (and nosy), my son barraged this poor woman with questions, “Why are you wearing that? Why is your baby under there? What is that cloth for?” until, dissatisfied by the answers and fed up of being told by his grandmother to leave the woman alone, sighed and asked, “Is your baby under there because it’s really ugly?” Naively, it was the only conclusion he could draw. Breastfeeding is not easy. Don’t struggle alone. Don’t compare yourself to others. Get help if you need it. Then pull up the biscuits, put your feet up and enjoy the peace.
We have a whole generation of women who have been lied to.

FISH BURGERS
WITH CORN RELISH
AND FRIED AVOCADO
“T
hese are mighty impressive for burgers. Rather than blitzing fish to a paste in a food processor as many recipes do, I like to finely chop the fish, creating a chunkier texture and a juicier end result, much like a good-quality meat burger. Of course, the beauty of this recipe means that you can blitz to a finer texture if you’re feeding little ones. Using two kinds of fish enriches the f lavour, and the oily mackerel helps bind the burgers together.” 500g / 1 lb 2 oz skinless white fish fillets, such as pollock, cod or haddock 200g/7 oz mackerel fillet, skinned and pin-boned 2 garlic cloves, peeled and crushed or grated 1 tsp smoked paprika 1 tsp English mustard 1 tsp bicarbonate of soda 1 tbsp chopped flat-leaf parsley oil 2 ripe avocados, peeled and thickly sliced 2 tbsp mayonnaise 4 burger buns, halved and lightly toasted 4 crisp lettuce leaves 1 beef tomato, sliced flaked sea salt and freshly ground black pepper
TIME TAKEN 1 hour, plus at least 1 hour chilling | SERVES 4
FOR THE RELISH 325g /1 1½ oz tinned sweetcorn, drained 2 banana (large) shallots, peeled and finely chopped 1 red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped 125g / 4½ oz caster sugar 1½ tsp yellow mustard seeds ½ tsp paprika 100ml / 3½ fl oz / scant ½ cup white wine vinegar • To make the relish, put all of the ingredients in a saucepan, and bring to the boil. Cook for 20 minutes, until the relish has thickened and is syrupy. Remove from the heat and leave to cool. • For the burgers, finely chop both types of fish into very small pieces. Put them in a bowl and add the garlic, paprika, mustard, bicarbonate of soda, parsley, a good pinch of salt and freshly ground black pepper. • Mix everything together really well, then shape into four burgers. Place them on a plate lined with baking parchment, cover and chill for at least 1 hour. • When you are ready to cook the burgers, heat a little oil in a large frying pan over a medium heat. Cook the burgers for 4–5 minutes on each side, until they are golden and just firm to the touch
• Remove from the heat and rest for a few minutes in a warm place. Return the pan to a medium heat and add a drop more oil. Add the avocado and fry for about 1–2 minutes on each side, until slightly golden. Remove from the heat and season with salt and pepper. • Spread the mayonnaise on each of the lightly toasted bun bases. Add a lettuce leaf and tomato slices, and top with the burger, then the avocado, and finally add a good spoon of the relish. • Serve straight away.
FLEXIBLE To make halloumi burgers, thickly slice 375g / 13 oz halloumi cheese. Mix 6 tablespoons of fine semolina with ½ teaspoon of smoked paprika in a shallow bowl. Dip the halloumi slices into 1 beaten egg, then coat in the semolina. Heat some olive oil in a frying pan over a medium heat and fry the halloumi for 2–3 minutes, until golden. Assemble as the fish burger above.

hen launching awards, one never really knows how they will be received. It seemed obvious to us that celebrating school food would be popular. After all, what’s the first question you ask your child when you collect them from school? The chorus of “What did you have for lunch today?” can be heard every afternoon up and down the country. But while we know a lot about our children’s academic progress, school league tables, and reputation, we don’t know much about what’s going on in the dining room. By launching the School Food Awards, we wanted to shed some light on the school day which parents are never part of. One of our aims was to celebrate the dedication of school catering teams who work tirelessly to provide healthy, nutritious meals on tight budgets. More importantly, we 22 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK

wanted to continue the discussion around healthy eating and healthy attitudes to food which we all hope to instil in our children from a young age. School has a huge part to play in this. And so, in the autumn, we invited schools in London and the South East to enter three categories: Best Vegetarian Menu, Best School Menu and School Dinner Hero. The response surpassed our expectations and we whittled the entries down to a shortlist of schools to visit for lunch. Tough gig (let me tell you, three lunches in a day is actually quite difficult).

We’re indebted to the team of judges who munched their way through various menus and who asked many questions of the catering teams we met. Thank you to Beverley Turner, Jo Pratt, Kathryn BouldreyChourio and Lizzie King for joining the first City Kids School Food Awards. On meeting with our finalists, we were all delighted to see how passionate they were about their school food provision, about making improvements where necessary, about catering for different diets and allergies and about their impact on the local environment. And all schools, crucially, were listening to their pupils’ feedback while also trying to push the boundaries of their developing taste buds. Our finalists were all strong, but...

The curriculum that has been devised will be highly creative, with daily forest school sessions and specialist art, drama and music teaching. For anyone interested there are weekly tours of the Nursery as well as open days for the Prep School on 27th June and 19th September. stjamesschools.co.uk
FULL OF iDEAS Clifton Lodge in Ealing has launched a Duke of York iDEA Club this term. This is an international programme that helps pupils and adults develop digital, enterprise and employability skills. Pupils can attain industryrecognised certificates that they can take with them to their next schools and beyond. They will be working towards getting badges in different areas of the digital world towards their Bronze Certificates. The ten Upper School pupils were so enthusiastic and enjoyed earning their first points. The school Head of IT is working towards her Silver Certificate, having already achieved her bronze certificate (pupils were very impressed when they saw the Buckingham Palace postmark!).
SCHOOL OF LIFE A recent survey conducted by charity Big Change and the Innovation Unit has found that most teachers in London think that pupils should be prepared for life rather than exams. 86% wished school would focus more on improving children’s social and communication skills, as well as teaching young people how to make a positive difference to society or the planet. As you might expect, pupils tend to agree with this approach with two thirds believing they should be taught how to manage money or how to become better communicators. Holly Branson, Leadership Team Virgin Group and co-Founder Big Change, said: “School should be a time for self-discovery, building resilience and becoming fully-rounded individuals who can make a positive contribution to the world. However, our current system fails to nurture and prepare the ‘whole’ child for our rapidly changing world.” To read more about the report:

cliftonlodgeschool.co.uk THE GOWER SCHOOL ESSAY SUCCESS Congratulations to Rohan Jain, age 10, who was awarded Highly Commended in the Horsey Junior Essay category of the Independent Schools Association’s National Essay writing competition 2019, with his essay “Forgotten”. The competition had over 250 entries from around the country and the judges were really impressed with Rohan’s literary creation. The children in Rohan’s category were asked to choose an autumn scene and recreate it using vivid descriptive techniques. Brian Duffield, the adjudicator, said that: “Rohan has written a beautifully descriptive piece, cleverly linking the title to the final word of the response. It opens with some excellent descriptors: “russet veins,” “the cerulean sky,” and “mud engulfed,” illustrate how ambitious vocabulary immediately captures the scene.” School Principal Emma Gowers congratulated Rohan, saying: “We are thrilled for Rohan’s achievement, he is a brilliant writer and it is absolutely fantastic to see one of our talented children getting recognised in a national competition.”

Year 4s at Notting Hill & Ealing High School recently celebrated the 50-year anniversary of the first astronaut landing on the moon with a STEAM lesson using augmented reality. The girls were able to study the moon’s surface close up, learning about the light and dark areas, impact basins and the lunar magma ocean. They then used clay to create the same textures using pinching and stretching techniques. Whilst this dried, the girls made a backdrop galaxy using toothbrushes and paint, adding realistic areas of light and dark onto their moon models using watercolours and acrylic paints with their fingertips.

WHAT’S
THE BEST WAY TO TREAT SUNBURN? Sunburn is probably the first thing we worry about when taking our little ones out on a hot day so of course we slather on the factor 50+ and pop a hat on! Sunburn is often a superficial burn to the outer layer of skin: it will be red, sore and swollen. If it looks raw and blistered, this indicates a more serious burn that’s damaged 2 or 3 layers of skin.
Mild sunburn can most likely be treated at home using the following steps: • Move the child indoors or to a shaded area and cool the skin with a cool shower or a cool, wet towels. Never cool the skin with ice. • Have the child drink plenty of fluids. Ice pops come in handy here! • Paracetamol and ibuprofen could be taken according to recommended age and dosage to help with any pain. For more severe sunburn which can include blistering, swelling, fever and chills, children may need hospital treatment with medication and dressings. • Never burst the blisters, cool as before and cover loosely with cling film. • Headaches, vomiting and dizziness could also indicate heatstroke, sunstroke or heat exhaustion so a medical assessment will be required. Of course, the best way to treat sunburn is to prevent it completely. Babies under six months should always be kept shaded and out of direct sunlight. Children should wear suitable clothing, a hat and sun lotion which includes both UVA and UVB protection and ideally only play in the shade. Jenni Dunman is the founder of Daisy First Aid which offers paediatric first aid classes to families and carers. She is a former police officer and a mum of three based in Surrey. daisyfirstaid.com
WHEN
CAN I START TO BRUSH MY BABY’S TEETH? It’s best to start healthy habits straightaway and start cleaning baby teeth as soon as they appear. As baby teeth have a thinner outer layer of enamel than adult teeth they are more vulnerable to decay. Most babies start teething at around six months. We recommend starting to introduce them to the idea of cleaning when teething by wiping their gums and teeth using a piece of clean gauze or soft washcloth. A lot of parents also find Brush-Baby Dental Wipes helpful. They contain Xylitol - a natural sweetener that is good for teeth (yes, really!), because it helps reduce the growth of decay-causing bacteria. As soon as your child’s teeth start to come through, introduce them to a small soft toothbrush, brushing regularly as part of your child’s morning and night-time routine, using a smear of fluoride toothpaste (with at least 1000ppm fluoride) until they are three years of age. After this time, you can use a small pea-sized amount (with at least 1350ppm fluoride). All children should be supervised with their brushing until they are seven years of age. Children love to imitate their parents, so it’s great to set a good example and get into the habit of brushing your teeth in front of your child: by showing them how you clean your teeth, they’ll soon want to copy you! Helping your children establish good tooth brushing habits is the key to a lifetime of healthy, happy smiles.
HOW SOON
CAN I INTRODUCE A BOTTLE? I’M DESPERATE FOR SOME SLEEP! Sleep deprivation is used as a form of torture so it’s no surprise that new mums are willing to part with a lot of money for baby sleep aids - we’ve all made desperate online purchases at 2am! Firstly, take comfort in the fact your baby is doing what is natural and normal. Regular wake-ups to feed help establish your milk supply, as well as helping prevent engorgement and mastitis. Growth spurts and brain development all lead to your baby wanting to feed – often what feels like constantly! If you want to introduce a bottle, consider waiting for your breastfeeding to become ‘established’ - this can take up to six weeks. Any earlier may affect your supply of milk or cause nipple confusion (the latch for your baby to breastfeed differs from the one for a bottle feed). My advice would be to get your partner to give a bottle at around 9-10pm, allowing you to go to bed early. If you express the milk for this feed it won’t have such an effect on your breast milk supply and risks of engorgement.
As well as introducing a bottle, you can also step up your self-care: • Consider cancelling that lunch you’re too tired for and put your pyjamas back on research shows that short power naps can be just as beneficial as longer sleeps. • Ask friends and family for help • Reach out to other mums. It’s an amazing comfort to realise you’re not the only one awake for a 3am night feed. You know you’re a new mum when your biscuit intake is through the roof and you smell like a coffee bean. Reassure yourself that your experience is normal, and this phase will pass.

TAKING CONTROL
OF BIRTH
We chat to best-selling author Milli Hill about her new book Give Birth Like a Feminist Words MORAG TURNER
H
aving a child is one of the most life changing events a woman can go through – physically, mentally and emotionally. And yet, despite it being so deeply personal, it can often feel as if we don’t have a say in what is happening to us. So, the title of Milli Hill’s new book Give Birth Like a Feminist should strike a chord with all women as birth is very much a feminist issue and one, as the book discusses so well, all women have a right to take control of. “So often choice isn’t something that is discussed with women when they are pregnant. The system is still routed in patriarchal ideology that infantilises women and makes them feel as if they don’t have a say in what their birth experience will be like,” explains Milli, the founder of the Positive Birth Movement, a global network of free to attend antenatal groups, linked up by social media. There are 250 in the UK and another 200 in over 37 countries. Following on from the success of her first book, The Positive Birth Book, Give Birth Like a Feminist, aims to help women take charge of the birth process. “We regularly hear people say ‘the most important thing is a healthy baby’ or ‘everyone made it through OK’. Yes of course every mother’s top priority is her baby’s safety, but it’s also OK for women to be concerned about their own wellbeing and their body. Just making it out alive is a pretty base line in this day and age. Women deserve better births.” “They shouldn’t feel they have to ‘leave their dignity at the door’ when they enter a maternity ward or expect to be traumatised physically and mentally,” says Milli who was inspired to start discussing the subject of birth after her own negative experience with her first child. Of course, she is not suggesting that mothers don’t listen to medical advice, but Milli is passionate about women making truly informed decisions. Whether you have an intervention-free home birth or a planned C-section, being fully consulted about what is happening, and why, is a crucial part of a positive birth experience. “Birth doesn’t always go to plan and we all know that, but often women feel traumatised not because of the events that took place, but how they were treated during the process. Was it explained to them? Were they listened to? Did they feel supported? These are the factors that can make all the difference.” Milli believes all women should write a birth plan and not to listen to
The system is still routed in patriarchal ideology that infantilises women and makes them feel as if they don’t have a say in what their birth experience will be like.
those who criticise the idea of trying to manage your birth in some way. “Birth plans do matter. They are far from pointless because they help mothers – and fathers – to really focus on what they want, to learn about all their options and to ask questions of their health care providers. Do your research and if you are told you can’t have something then ask the medical team to explain why. It’s this understanding and knowledge that really helps.” There are some aspects of a birth plan that are almost always possible. “Skin to skin contact with your baby immediately afterwards or delayed cord clamping are both options you can mention,” Milli points out. “Discuss all this with your partner and your midwife too so they know exactly what your wishes are rather than leaving them on a piece of paper,” she advises. “All too often birth is portrayed as a negative, painful experience that women just have to ‘get on with’ regardless of how nervous, worried or disempowered they feel. It does not have to be this way. Mothers deserve better from those caring for them. By asking and questioning we can force that change to happen. It’s a cultural shift and it will take time, but progress is being made.” With around 700,000 births every year and the vast majority of them in NHS hospitals, the system is stretched to say the least, but Milli believes no woman should feel like just another number in a queue. “So many midwives have thanked me over the years and told me they are glad someone is encouraging women to have voice. They want to see the system improve too and this is how we do it. I hope my book will be a part of this and that in years to come the positive birth stories will massively outweigh the negative.”

WELLNESS
JENNIS With her new fitness app Dame Jessica Ennis-Hill aims to share the expert advice and support she was so grateful for during her pregnancies. When did you start thinking about creating the app? The original idea came when I was pregnant with Reggie. I found it overwhelming trying to find the right information about fitness in pregnancy and post-natally. Luckily, I had an incredible physio to help me navigate this and I am so grateful for that, so I wanted to find a way to share the information with women everywhere. What can it do? There are three options within the app: workouts for pregnancy, post pregnancy (Jennis Pregnancy) or people who have busy lives and want a quick effective workout (Jennis Fitness). The workouts are all very easy to follow and are tailored to different levels of fitness. The pregnancy workouts allow the woman to choose what activity they do based on how they are feeling and are tailored to suit each trimester of their pregnancy. What kind of advice and support does the app have? As well as the workouts, we have created something called ‘Your Pregnancy Questions Answered’. There are videos of me with physio Ali Rose chatting about some of the big things I discovered when pregnant and answering some common pregnancy exercise questions too. On our website we will also host lots of informative pregnancy content, alongside our own content we have partnered with experts in their field – there will be lots of advice and support for mums to be – and dads too! How did you feel when you were pregnant? I loved being pregnant but like every other woman I had no idea what to expect. Our bodies go through so much change and I was super lucky to have an amazing team around me to explain what was happening and why. That was incredibly reassuring and that is why I have created Jennis, to share these insights and training programmes. 34 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Did you feel any pressure to get your body back, particularly as you’re Jessica Ennis, World and Olympic Champion? After the birth of my first child I was still a competing athlete and I really wanted to get back – I was always asking Ali if I could start doing some ab work, she was very careful and taught me ways to check if my abs were knitting back ok. I am so glad I listened to her advice, and that of my coach, as I came back all the stronger for it. A gradual strengthening of your core muscles and building back strength sensibly is definitely advisable. How do you fit fitness into your daily routine with the children? I just try and grab 20-minute windows when I can, either when the kids are at school or after they have gone to bed. If they are around, I will still try but sometimes it might get cut short if the kids want to ‘get involved’ but even five minutes is better than nothing. We’re told that through the app we’ll see the real Jessica Ennis-Hill. What’s she like? Ha! I’d like to think… energetic, cheerful and honest. I am very down to earth and love a bit of a laugh. Did you find becoming a parent tough? I don’t think any parent is prepared for sleep deprivation! Having a baby is the most joyful thing you could ever imagine – but the lack of sleep is really tough. I am absolutely loving being a mum – it is a new challenge every day but the joy my two bring to our lives is immeasurable. What advice would you give to new parents? To accept help from family and friends and that there will be days when you have a newborn that you get nothing done and that is absolutely fine! How well do Reggie (4) and Olivia get on (1)? Brilliantly, I am so lucky!
What’s your favourite thing to do as a family? I think holidays are the best time as we are all together 24/7 – otherwise a lovely walk with our dog Myla on a weekend.

This year see Justin Fletcher, Dick & Dom, Paw Patrol, PJ Masks and Peppa Pig with music from Rudimental, Jess Glynne, Lewis Capaldi and Jonas Blue amongst others. Activities include hands-on cookery, RSC theatre workshops and circus skills. Highlights for parents are likely to be gin and rosé tents, last year provided by Sipsmith and Mirabeau.
7 HOUSE OF COMMON | Clapham Common
26 August madness.co.uk Under 10s are free here and catered for by Minor Madness, an area dedicated to kids with a House of Fun play garden, giant inflatables and special appearances by Shaun the Sheep and Hey Duggee. Music comes from Madness, Ziggy Marley, Craig Charles and more.

Fussy Eaters Sorted At Sani It’s such a disappointment when you get the kids’ menu and it consists of chicken nuggets, chips and pizza. Well not at Sani. The fivestar family-friendly Greek resort has teamed up with children’s cookery author Annabel Karmel who has curated a brand-new baby and children’s menu. With lots of tasty, balanced meals to choose from across the resort’s restaurants - including vegetarian and vegan options - even the pickiest eaters will find something they like. The Young Food Explorers Menu features
everything from colourful quesadillas and giant couscous salad, to crispy baked cod. So, while mum and dad enjoy their delicious meal (we’ve been to the Sani resort so we can assure you it will be), little ones will love their grub too. As if that’s not reason enough to visit then Sani has some other exciting new developments for kids this year including the new Rafa Nadal Tennis Centre for children over five years and new family splash pool.

Holiday Clubs For All Ages Powder Byrne are probably best known for their amazing family skiing holidays, but they are a great option for a summer break too. This year they have added a number of fantastic five-star hotels to their portfolio such as the stylish beach front Puente Romano resort and the upmarket Ritz-Carlton The Abama Hotel in Tenerife. But regardless of where you choose to stay you’ll always find Powder Byrne’s super children’s programmes that cater for kids from four months in the PB Crèche through to active teens in the adrenaline-fuelled PB Adventure Academy – meaning parents can enjoy some well-deserved downtime in the sun. powderbyrne.com

London Experience Days For a day out with a difference check out Airbnb Experiences. They have an amazing selection of things to get up to with your kids all over the capital - from lollipop making and magic lessons to a ‘Fantastic Beasts’ tour with a zoologist who will show you how to handle reptiles, amphibians and giant bugs. We love the newly launched ‘Horrible Histories’ tour of London, an interactive adventure that gives guests the whole gory story of the Capital, with tales from the Terrifying Tudors, through the Vile Victorians to the Blitzed Brits. As a social impact Experience, 100% of the proceeds will go to Child.org who work to help more children in sub-Saharan Africa to stay healthy, safe and in school.

Farm Charm Previously a Feather Down farm stay, owners Tamara and Richard have struck out alone to bring you their take on the glamping experience at their 200acre farm in Hampshire. Gambledown Farm sits within a slice of heavenly countryside on the outskirts of the New Forest, comprising the main farmhouse, barn conversion, cottages and four African-style safari tents. Tent underplays the situation somewhat. Here you have accommodation built on a raised platform, complete with running water and gas supply: yes, a flushing loo and hot showers shall be yours! Inside you’ll find wooden flooring, a kitchen with gas hob, a wood burning stove, sofa and dining table as well as two bedrooms (one double, one bunk) and a cubby hole room reached from a fixed ladder which also sleeps two. At times it’s hard to remember that you’re in a tent: it’s very clean, comfortable and the ceilings are high. Plus, there rechargeable lanterns and lights dotted in and around the rooms.

Out on the veranda you can survey your kingdom which houses a herd of shorthorn cattle, two horses, chickens (you can collect eggs whenever you want), two Gloucestershire Old Spots as well as beautifully protected hedgerows, maintained expertly by Richard. On Tuesdays and Saturdays, Richard and Tamara host Pizza Night where you can create your own pizza and have it cooked in the wood-fired pizza oven. And when you run out of supplies like milk, charcoal or wine, you can head to the well-stocked honesty shop in the barn.

Kindred spirits We know that many of you are running your own businesses, or if you haven’t taken the plunge, it’s something that’s probably crossed your mind. Working from home is a great starting point – no overheads etc – but eventually you may be ready to get your head down in a co-working space. Kindred in Hammersmith is a new kind of community workspace complimented by meeting rooms, a bar and restaurant, plus private dining and event space. It’s incredibly stylish and you’re likely to find some kindred spirits who’ll be supportive of your new journey.

WHO IS? ROB DA BANK PEOPLE
DJ, CO-FOUNDER OF BESTIVAL AND CAMP BESTIVAL AND FATHER OF THREE BOYS
Emily Gray Photography
Who are you looking forward to seeing at Camp Bestival? Well, obviously, Mr Motivator! Seriously though I love the big acts and our headliners are strong this year but it’s the fun bits like The Cuban Brothers, Mr Tumble, Mr B. The Gentleman Rhymer and new bands like Henge who I wanna see. Lewis Capaldi was one of my luckiest bookings this year and should be a moment!
Looking back at last year, and the weather that forced you to cancel, can you believe your luck when it was one of the hottest and longest summers in history? It was deeply upsetting at the time as we were all having such a brilliant festival. We only lost one day out of four and there was overwhelming support for our decision to cancel the Sunday as it just wasn’t safe to open that day. How did you recover? Last year was tough on a few levels but we’re in a fast moving, volatile industry where we need to be able to bounce back. Our amazing customers, repeat and new ones, are at the heart of everything we do so making sure they feel our love and passion for Camp has been top of our minds for the last eight months and we’ve delivered probably our best and biggest line up and have some great surprises in store too. You’re into your 11th year, how did it all begin? It all kind of sprouted from Bestival. We were into our third year of that and Josie fell pregnant…don’t ask me how! Anyway, we decided that Bestival was probably a bit racy for a new baby so let’s start a new family festival aimed at our own kids and our mates’ kids too. 58 CITYKIDSMAGAZINE.CO.UK
Is dressing up obligatory at Camp Bestival? Absolutely… although I don’t tend to get involved until about ten minutes before. Our kids still love it, but I don’t think our first teenager will be getting dressed up this year! I might go for a real-life hero like a fireman or Dr da Bank maybe! What are top tips for festival virgins? Pace yourself. Far too many of us set off at a cracking pace on Thursday trying to see and do everything. Remember it’s a marathon not a sprint and the festival isn’t going anywhere. What’s the best way to keep track of kids? Well it’s a 24/7 game of cat and mouse. The audience is so aware of kids wandering about and keeps an eye out for each other. We have extremely good systems in place but ideally you all know where your kids are at all times. Have them wear a wristband with your number on it and try and let them have their independence at the right age whilst knowing the rules. It’s a real family affair but who’s really in charge? You or Josie [Rob’s wife]? Depends which day of the week it is! We have different roles and we both lead from the front. Camp is cool because we do try and hang out with our kids but we’re always on duty and only a radio call away from action.
This year there’s a parenting programme – what can we expect? A plethora of real-life subjects from depression to festival style tackled in an honest and down to earth manner from our amazing team of parents and bloggers. Do your kids have a say in the acts? They are starting to yes. Lewis Capaldi probably happened because of that and they all love Chic. If my eldest son Arlo was programming it then it’d be Skepta, Giggs and Drake playing so maybe I need to set up a new festival for him. Tell us something no one knows about you I’m colour-blind…quite badly! A weekend without kids – what would you and Josie do? Sleep. What would you take to a desert island? My record collection and a booming sound system!
