WELCOME

W

hen it came to putting together this Spring issue, I realised there was an accidental common theme - men. Our feature interview is with Sébastien Foucan, Bond baddie

from Casino Royale, but perhaps most importantly, the founder and pioneer of freerunning. He has spent his life pushing the boundaries, attempting challenges he thought beyond him, and is now sharing his experiences with kids in Chiswick through his Freerunning Academy. A more inspirational and accessible person it would be difficult to find. Beverley Turner celebrates West London’s dads and their contribution to 21st century parenting; and we meet Hugo Shephard, the founder of Role Models - an adhoc childcare agency with a difference. Realising this had the potential to be a testosterone-charged City Kids edition, our Style page focuses on unisex clothing. Roxzann Weston has found some excellent brands that break the gender stereotype. Our beautiful cover girl, Anna, is also wearing some of 2015’s latest unisex trends. Mothers’ Day, Easter and May half term will shortly be on their way, and our What’s On calendar and directories will entertain even the most demanding little tyrants. SÉBASTIEN FOUCAN BRINGS HIS FREERUNNING PHILOSOPHY TO CHISWICK WORDS VICTORIA EVANS PHOTOGRAPHY KELLY REEVES PHOTOGRAPHY

10 CITY KIDS

FEATURE

I

have a confession. I am a closet James Bond Fan. Fan

perhaps overstates it but, just sometimes, nothing else will do. One of my favourite scenes from a Bond film is in Casino Royale, Daniel Craig’s first outing as 007. No, not the beach scene, where the outrageously buff Craig walks out of the Bahamian sea in his crazy tight swimmers, but rather the adrenalin-fuelled, high energy, death defying stunts that Craig and his baddie counterpart perform from ground level up to 200 feet above the ocean. The diminutive figure of Mollaka, gracefully leaping over obstacles and glancing off walls, while Bond crashes through them, is Sebastien Foucan - parkour and freerunning pioneer. If you have no idea what I’m talking about, Google ‘Sebastien Foucan Casino Royale’ and tell me you’re not impressed. The fact that the Bond film franchise used freerunning in the first big action sequence reflects the airtime the discipline had been getting at the time in TV commercials and in two critically acclaimed films: Jump London and Jump Britain. Foucan and his pals scaled famous landmarks, showcasing parkour and freerunning to a global audience. Why am I telling you all this? Well, Sebastien Foucan has launched his Foucan Freerunning Academy in Chiswick for secondary school kids. If you are over eleven, you can join a beginner or intermediate after-school class and learn from a true pro. There’s a certain irony in that the classes are held in a school hall. As a young boy, Foucan says he was a failure at school: “They told me I had to sit and listen, but I didn’t want to, I was full of energy, full of dreams.” Foucan has been encouraged by the enthusiasm of Chiswick School’s Head, Tony Ryan, who has bought into his vision. It’s hard not to. He speaks passionately (the French accent must help here) and eloquently about his own experiences of the education system in France; which ultimately shaped the way he now teaches children. He is certain that children are engaged by the visual; why else would they want to play on iPads or watch TV all day? “As a teacher, your duty is to inspire children and make them dream. Adults listen, kids see; it’s about playing, using your eyes. I am a failure if I have to get them to listen. As an educator, I have set up a programme where they don’t feel like they’re learning; they keep having fun and they improve.” He’s also not averse to throwing in the odd back flip from time to time to keep the kids engaged. Foucan’s journey as a parkour practitioner began as a kid, alongside his friend David Belle on the streets of France. Parkour comes from the French “parcours”, a military method of training which essentially means: to move freely from A to B by running, jumping and climbing; using what Mother Nature and city planners provide as a playground. Limited by the constraints of parkour (there are no flips or somersaults

in parkour), Foucan invented his own practice of freerunning. “It’s a mindset, a revolution, to move away from boundaries. Freerunning is what I call an unfinished discipline. For me it’s my lifestyle, it’s my DNA.” At a freerunning session with Foucan, students won’t be faced with traditional warm-ups and stretches. He often starts with a game of tag, or an activity which shakes off the inhibitions, like moving on allfours like a cat. “The shy ones aren’t keen to do it, but they see their friends doing it and become immersed in the task, eventually relaxing and letting go.” They will learn balance, precise movements, how to harness their developing physical strength, and how to take controlled risks. Above all, Foucan wants them to realise their mental strength. You see, much of Foucan’s success is built on confidence and belief. Where his education failed him, leaving his self-belief in tatters, parkour and then freerunning provided experiences which enabled him to challenge his trust in his own ability, and to conquer his fears. Foucan is acrophobic, but having watched the stunts in Casino Royale, you wouldn’t know it. All the action is real. “They didn’t know I had a fear of heights, it’s not something I publicise. It was James Bond – how could I say no? Before filming, I imagined what it would be like, I looked at models of the shoot, but when I saw the cranes for real, well … So I practiced over three months. I happened to be doing Jump Britain in Cardiff [where he leaped across a gap in the Millennium Stadium’s roof], so there was progression to these heights. I developed a way to learn how to do it - to focus.” While kids who attend his classes won’t be encouraged to dive lemming-like off the sides of tall buildings, they will be taught the basics – how to move freely, how to jump, how to land safely and how to face fears. Also, with discussions in place to take classes outside in the summer, this freerunning pioneer will be able to share his vision of the world - as one enormous playground.

BEVERLEY TURNER ON

emember how you used to love your partner when they gave you the last forkful of dessert? Once you become parents and romantic meals are a distant memory, love is knowing that your other half will wipe your kid’s nose with their fingers. Maintaining romance while surviving the baby and toddler years (or at least not murdering your co-creator) is the greatest challenge most of us ever face. I tell my Blooming Bunch ante-natal groups, “Brace yourselves: there will be so many new ways to let each other down.” They blink silently. They just. Don’t. Know.

being run by a nappywearing dictator. But high-five to the fellas: they finally understand that being a parent is phenomenally tougher than being in the office. It’s a very brave (idiotic) dad who will still come home, survey the messy house and ask his partner what on earth she has done all day.

And how could they? It’s impossible to picture the changes until you’ve felt the fury of asking hubby to “purleeaase” empty the nappy bin for the fourteenth time; or felt your heart sink because they seem resentful about giving a bottle at 2am or felt cross that they’re never keen to play peek-a-boo with your wide-eyed bubba. (Don’t they know that children who aren’t played with for thirty minutes a day never achieve more than 10 A*s at GCSE)?

I honestly believe this social shift is partly due to dads getting involved before the birth rather than thinking their job is done after the fun of conception. Originally, I had intended for dads to attend half of the classes on my antenatal course. But due to demand, they now come to all eight. We even have dads frequently turn up without their partners if mum-to-be is kept late at the office. That was unheard of a decade ago.

But could it be that the stereotype of the hopeless husband is finally dead? According to a survey by charity Working Families, dads under 35 are now more likely to do the school run than their equally busy partners. On a recent LBC phone-in callers repeatedly told me that being a full-time father no longer carries the stigma that existed as little as ten years ago. That is one rapidly momentous social change. A glance at any of our local swimming pools on a weekend morning reveals a proliferation of daddy-day-care. It’s highly likely that the mums are at the supermarket rather than a spa but the evidence is clear – dads are more involved in parenting than at any other time in history. So who can take the credit? There’s no doubt that mums now aim higher in our expectations and being super-clear with dads about our needs is critical when we feel like strangers in a strange land

Some obstetricians question whether dads should even be at the birth. The man who wails, vomits and howls at the moon only makes mum-to-be more anxious. And that’s a conversation all couples should have openly and calmly (good luck with that by the way). Of course the majority of men do attend the birth and there is a lot that they can do to make sure they feel part of this massive event.

... DADS

for dads at birth

I like to divide their tasks into three categories: emotional, physical and practical (see below). A couple who have prepared for meeting their baby together are likely to have a positive birth - one in which dads know what’s happening; have the confidence to assert themselves (on their wife’s behalf) and don’t feel terrified. Which, when you think about it, is a brilliant mind-set to be in when you’re about to swap romantic meals for snotty fingers.

PRACTICAL Be in charge of the parking metre. Know the best route to get to the hospital at different times of the day. Be responsible for drinks and snacks during labour (for both of you!).

PHYSICAL Men are great leaning posts for women who want to stay upright in labour. Massage hands, feet and lower back (if she wants you to). Just being present to have your hand crushed can be great comfort. EMOTIONAL Protect her – politely guard the door against people ‘popping in’. Tell her she is amazing and doing brilliantly. Be strong even if you’re scared. Once the baby’s out you can blub like a total Jessie.

here aren’t many sporting activities you can all do as a family. Rugby, football, hockey and cricket are great for the kids but require a certain level of spectator commitment from parents, in all weather conditions. But what if I told you there was a new venue in West London where the whole family could compete against each other on a level playing field? Nestled between terraced houses, a stone’s throw from the High Road, is an industrial estate where TeamSport have opened a spanking new go-kart track. Their family sessions mean that kids (12yrs+) can race against their parents in karts that reach eye-watering speeds. Channelling your inner Lewis Hamilton is all the more appealing as the track is indoors, warm and unexpectedly swanky as Managing Director, Dominic Gaynor explains. “We’re going against the last 25 years of people’s experiences of indoor kart tracks in the UK, which have been a bit spit and sawdust, under invested and generally a bit grubby and not very nice. Changing rooms have showers, nice lockers what people would expect from a decent health club. A lot of people walk in and don’t expect this. And partly, the electric kart really helps with that because it is a clean environment.” These new eco karts run on the same technology that commonly power mobile phones - lithium ion batteries. This makes them fast, light, and easier to manoeuvre around the 500-metre track. Gone are the noisy petrol karts you’ve probably seen and heard before. “It’s strange at first if you’re used to petrol, but actually the whole performance of the car outweighs the fact that there’s no noise. Because it’s electric, you have instant torque so they’re actually a lot quicker - the acceleration is quicker. For an indoor kart circuit, which tends to be a little tighter with more corners, twists and turns, to have that power when you’re coming out of corners is actually a much better driving experience.” Currently the electric karts are suitable for kids over the age of 12,

but kids’ electric karts for over eights are under development and Dominic hopes to see them in action in West London before the end of the year. TeamSport do however have three other London track locations, two of which in North London and Docklands run petrol karts for children from the age of eight years. A typical race day experience starts with registration and a prerace briefing to go through the do’s and don’ts of the track. Then it’s into the changing rooms to put on a race suit and helmet before stepping into the kart. You need never have driven before – the pedals are colour coded, green for go and red for braking; there are no gears and steering is quite straightforward. There are usually three eight-minute sessions with a break between each one where instructors can go through your lap times and give tips on racing lines and overtaking. It is at this point that I feel I must point out that the fairer sex is at an advantage here. Apparently women talk to the marshals more and are great at listening and gathering insider knowledge to get the best out of the karts. After a podium presentation and trophy for the winner, drivers can retire to the bar to enjoy a well-earned drink and pizza. One of the West London track’s major draws is the fact you race over two levels, the ground and the first floor, as well as test your skills on a banked corner which makes the whole experience more fun. Family and friends can watch from the viewing area and, because the karts are quieter, they can actually hear themselves speak. Plus drivers can communicate to each other, in the nicest possible way, out on the track. As well as family days and junior track days, there are options to hire the whole track for parties or corporate days out; and with annual membership you can compete in a championship against TeamSport drivers from around the UK for a track day at Brands Hatch in the autumn.

PEOPLE

“IF YOU DON’T TAKE RISKS, YOU’LL NEVER KNOW WHAT MIGHT HAVE BEEN.” LENA ADDIS OWNER OF CHISWICK- BASED BOUTIQUE MILO ET MIMI.

Why did you start Milo et Mimi? After a long career in PR, maternity-leave was my first real opportunity to take a step back and re-assess the direction I wanted my career to take. Motherhood gave me a new perspective on things as I realised I wanted to work flexibly and be my own boss, rather than working the traditional 9am-5.30pm. I studied French at university, and it was during my year abroad that I first fell in love with French fashion; the opportunity to wander the delightful Parisian boulevards and to browse their stylish boutiques was a major source of inspiration. When my daughter was born, I realised there are of lots of wonderful, high quality, non-high street brands for little ones so I set about creating an online store that combined my love of French style with my desire to offer fashionable kids clothing which is practical, comfortable and not massproduced. And so, Milo et Mimi was born with the aim of sharing some of these amazing brands with mums, while supporting other fledgling businesses.

There are lots of online boutiques. What’s Milo et Mimi’s USP? Our handpicked collection of exciting, emerging brands sourced from across the world is what makes Milo et Mimi different. Our adorable Hazel Village soft animals originate from an attic in Brooklyn; our pretty hair accessories - Hello Shiso and The Littles - are handmade by mumpreneurs in the US 16 CITY KIDS

and our collection of toys and homewares by emerging British designer, Julia Staite, adds a touch of quirky cool to any home. Also, a number of our clothing collections – particularly from Spain - are either unique to us in the UK or only in a handful of stores. We strive to find something a bit different, not widely available on the high street, at an affordable price.

What have been your best/worst times running a business? The freedom of being my own boss and being able to work flexibly has enabled me to spend as much time as possible with my daughter during these key formative years – that’s a huge plus! I also greatly enjoyed my recent three-month stint as a pop-up; feedback from my customers has been really encouraging and heartwarming and I have had so many positive comments on my product ranges, giving me the courage of my convictions. The lows often come with trying something new say, a marketing initiative or taking part in an event I haven’t attended before. As a small business, you have to take risks and to try new things - sometimes these don’t quite go the way you hope, which can be disheartening. I try to stay positive and to keep things in perspective. After all, if you don’t take risks, you’ll never know what might have been.

What do you wish you’d known when you started up, that you know now? I wish I had known just how much the success or failure of one’s online business

is in the hands of Google!

What advice would you give to anyone wanting a change of direction? Just go for it! If you have an entrepreneurial spirit, then take the plunge. Spend time researching the sector you want to go into and looking at competitors to learn as much as you can and to see what does and doesn’t work. I would also recommend starting marketing initiatives as early as possible – especially social media efforts - as it can take a long time to create awareness and to build a loyal following.

Where is your favourite place to go with your daughter? I love exploring Kew Gardens with my daughter. Not only do they do a mean chicken pie in the restaurant but it’s truly beautiful and inspiring to explore the gardens as they change with the seasons. We are lucky enough to have annual membership and so we pop by fairly frequently. There is always something new to see and to discover; my daughter is a huge fan of the Badger’s warren, as well as the kids play area.

Who is your inspiration? My father is a great inspiration, having started his own business over thirty years ago. I know I can always turn to him for guidance when it comes to Milo et Mimi and always appreciate the voice of experience he offers.Three words to describe what London means to you. Home, creativity, vibrancy. www.miloetmimi.com

BOOK REVIEW

PRE-SCHOOLERS

LITTLE KIDS

BIG KIDS

A set of books that will suit anyone’s shelves is the Wild! Series by Courtney Dicmas (Child’s Play). Beautifully illustrated, the four books cover the key points in most toddlers’ lives – Mealtime, Playtime, Bathtime and Bedtime. Told in rhyming verse, Dicmas uses animals to cheerfully tackle these areas, and parents will read these with a knowing nod to the challenges that they face during these routine times of day.

Ahoy me hearties! The Adventures of the Steampunk Pirates - The Leaky Battery Sets Sail by the Blue Peter award-winner Gareth P. Jones (Little Tiger) is a rip-roaring tale that is sure to entertain. The first in a series of stories, it follows the raucous robotic Steampunk Pirates. This fearless crew, led by the unpredictable Captain Clockheart, are made from iron but are after gold. They rock the high seas, robbing and looting from others, that is until they meet their match - the Iron Duke (who’s not made from iron but refers to the strength of his heart and soul), who makes it his mission to capture our metal heroes. If only he can keep up...

On to more adventure but of a different kind, Oksa Pollock: The Heart of Two Worlds by French authors Anne Plichota and Cendrine Wolf (Pushkin) is the third book in this cracking series, which sees our plucky heroine Oksa face one of her biggest challenges yet. The earth is in trouble - serious trouble. Set in London, which has now been flooded, Oksa desperately needs to find the Edefia, her magical home, in order to put straight the troubles with the earth. No pressure Oksa! As she journeys with her family she has to make some difficult choices, including siding with her arch enemies. But will she find the portal safely and at what cost? Truly gripping, with many layers, the series has been met with rave reviews and Pollockmania seems to have finally reached these shores. Fans of Harry Potter will love this and it is great to see such a fantastic female protagonist.

This fast paced, action adventure is very funny and totally bonkers. Gareth P. Jones has created a seriously daft story with strong characters, constant twists and turns complete with jokes on every page. We look forward to Adventures of the Steampunk Pirates - Attack of the Giant Spiders which is the next book out in the series.

HOMEWORK HELL a survival guide

T

he Saturday morning homework battle - or Sunday afternoon, or Monday morning, or any day of the week really, we’ve all been there. As you sit them down to write an essay on Tudor Britain, or learn spellings, all you can remember doing at this age is playing outside. You never got homework when you were seven, did you? So why do children get homework at primary school level? Many schools argue that homework is set to improve memory and to recap on what was learnt during the week. It also enables the child to explore subjects in more depth outside of the timerestricted classroom, as well as training them to use alternative research sources such as Wikipedia and YouTube. More evidently, homework instils self-discipline and time management - all useful skills in later life. Through the promotion of such benefits, it was only a matter of time before homework became part of primary school life. So how can we get our kids to do homework when neither you nor your children feel like it? Different techniques work for different children, but here are a few suggestions: 1. BREAK DOWN HOMEWORK - homework doesn’t seem so daunting when it is broken into segments. A child is more likely to sit for a 20-minute session, rather than knowing they have an hour’s work ahead of them. 2. GET INTO A ROUTINE - find a time that works best for you and your child on a regular basis. Some parents find the morning before school an excellent time to do a 10 - 20 minute stint, others prefer the weekend. A child is less likely to protest if homework is done at a set time on a set day. 3. DON’T MULTITASK - it is very tempting to sit children down to do homework together, but it can end up as a complete catastrophe. You may find they get stuck at the same time and in helping one child, the other can lose focus. It then becomes very difficult to get them back on track. 4. STAY CALM AND POSITIVE - it is incredibly hard to remain calm and positive when, what seems like an easy question turns into a huge Maths/English challenge. Children are individuals and learn differently. If you can understand and accept this, it will help you remain calm. A fraught atmosphere will not get the best out of your child, or you. 5. EXPECT THE UNEXPECTED - just because they were able to tell the time or do long multiplication last week doesn’t mean that they will remember this week! Refer to 4.

WORDS JULIET GOLZ

6. PARENTS BACK TO THE CLASSROOM - as parents though, it is hard to follow the latest curriculum and support the task at hand when the teaching methods are completely different to how you were taught. Try and encourage your school or class teacher to have an explanatory session for parents to advise them on the methods being taught. Once you understand this method, you can adopt it at home. 7. MAKE IT A CHALLENGE - homework can be fun, especially when you turn it into an enjoyable challenge – pretend your child is a spy that has to crack a code; time and count how many times tables they can work out and see if they can break their own record. Whatever your feelings on the matter, homework is here to stay. While you may occasionally wonder what any of you are getting out of the homework process, by approaching it in an informed, positive, structured and fun way, your child is likely to be more receptive. www.chiswickschools.co.uk

WHAT ARE THE STAKES? Every day your child is asked hundreds of questions, most indirectly. Every question posed by their teacher is, in its own small way, an assessment of the group in front of them - of which your child is only one. In fact, depending on the fervour and accuracy of the responses (or lack of), the only outcome is whether or not the teacher will move the learning on, or reiterate the current concept. Eventually and predictably these low-stake assessments give way to the high-stake variety: topic-tests, entrance tests, or endof-year examinations. Asking and answering questions on a daily basis builds confidence, reaffirms the idea that making mistakes while learning new material is OK, and informs the teacher where difficulties lie. It is the questions that students ask and the answers they give to questions posed that help the teacher decide how best to use the time available - to ensure as near to complete understanding, for as many as possible. It is not perfect - 100% understanding for 100% of students is incredibly difficult to achieve, especially without your child’s input. So help them, prompt them, reward them! Just get them to take part. Jason Dodd runs NumberWorks’nWords, Chiswick 0208 994 9168

BESPOKE BABYSITTING WORDS VICTORIA EVANS

Finding childcare to suit your child is the holy grail of many parents. Will your kids like the person you’ve chosen, will the carer engage with them, and will they have fun? Do you just need holiday cover or someone for a couple of afternoons? Step forward Hugo Shephard, founder of Role Models, an ad hoc or part-time childcare service for children aged three years or older. Hugo matches families with Role Models who can share their talents in music, arts and crafts, drama, sport or homework (yey!). His ambition is to provide experienced child carers who are talented, enthusiastic and dynamic, or TED as he calls it. “We’re trying to get away from the slightly boring, bog standard baby sitter or nanny who might be great but perhaps doesn’t bring as much to the table in terms of fun, enthusiasm and also skill. If you have a daughter who loves music or a boy who loves sport, it just makes sense to pair them up with someone who shares a similar interest. They won’t be doing music or sport the whole session, but if they want to go and kick a football outside for an hour or practice the violin, then they can, on quite an informal, fun basis.” So, if your child is a budding thespian, you can find a Role Model who’s a trained performer. Alternatively, if the Y5 maths homework is beyond your capabilities, a Role Model can step in. And if your son wants a manny, no problem. “There is a huge demand for mannies, more and more. Mum has two boys, Dad’s perhaps away or working long hours, 90% of prep school teachers are women, so they very rarely have a male role model in their lives, assuming they don’t have an older brother. So there’s a huge demand for it and mums tend to love them.” Hugo’s degree focused on the promotion of healthy child development, and whilst studying he often worked as a manny. These experiences plus childhood memories of uninspiring babysitters led him to start the business while on sabbatical from his city job. As well as ad hoc childcare, Role Models has also started running Ofsted registered SEN Activity camps for 6-12 year olds in Wandsworth. All carers have DBS certificates, references, interviews and have extensive SEN childcare experience. Bookings are being taken for Easter.

RECIPE BY JO PRATT This is a good standby meal in our house, as I always have peas and broad beans in the freezer, risotto rice in the cupboard and a few additional bits in the fridge. If you want to be a bit more fancy, you can also use fresh peas, broad beans and other veggies, such as green beans or asparagus. They’ll just need cooking for a few minutes in boiling water before you add to the risotto. And if you’ve ever wondered what to do with leftover risotto, here’s your answer. It’s worth making this recipe just to try out my Mozzarella and Primavera Arancini Cakes.

BAKED RISOTTO PRIMAVERA MAKES 2 adult and 4 kid-sized portions PREPARATION TIME 10 minutes COOKING TIME 25 minutes 2 tbsp olive oil 1 tbsp butter 1 large onion chopped 3 garlic cloves crushed 2 courgettes diced 275g/9¾oz/1¼ cups carnaroli or arborio risotto rice 1l/35fl oz/4 cups hot chicken or vegetable stock grated zest of 1 small lemon 125g/4½oz/scant 1 cup frozen peas defrosted 125g/4½oz/scant 1 cup frozen broad beans or soya beans defrosted 3 tbsp chopped chives mint basil or parsley leaves (or a mixture) 50g/1¾oz/2∕3 cup cup freshly grated Parmesan cheese 3 tbsp mascarpone or cream cheese sea salt and freshly ground black pepper LEFTOVERS ITALIAN STYLE
