The month of March, renowned as Hong Kong Arts Month, sees the city’s artistic creativity in full bloom as some of Asia’s major art festivals and exhibitions are held. The headliner, of course, is the prestigious Art Basel, arguably Asia’s largest art show with Hong Kong as only one of three host cities globally. Other shows worth attending include Art Central Hong Kong, now in its third year, along with the Asia Contemporary Art Show, and a score of other local art events. And not to be ignored for exploring are the many galleries and antique shops dotted along Hollywood Road. Please see our cover story on page 12 detailing Hong Kong’s art month and the city’s rising reputation as Asia’s art hub. March also sees the onset of spring in Hong Kong, with the weather just perfect to explore the city on foot, especially via its unique and omnipresent elevated pedestrian walkways and footbridges. These overhead bridges and walkways reach across city blocks to connect together office buildings, transport exchanges, shopping malls and residential developments into maze-like networks, allowing pedestrians to cross major thoroughfares and expressways, avoid street traffic, and do so even during inclement weather. What fascinates about these networks of raised walkways is how they create a new form of urban public space that is organic and elongated, a radical departure from traditional street corners and public squares. Please see our feature story on page 18 and explore some of the more fascinating walkway systems. Art may be good for the soul, but we need fine food and wine to sate the body, and Hong Kong is just the place to indulge this month as The Taste of Hong Kong, a culinary festival, transforms the Central Harbourfront into a foodie wonderland with scores of restaurants and dishes to experience and savour. The opportunities extend beyond artistic treasure hunts and culinary exploits this month as the Entertainment Expo Hong Kong 2017 returns, from 13 March to 25 April. Expect the who’s who of film, TV, digital entertainment and music to gather under one roof for the latest trends and offerings. For sheer excitement, we highly recommend a trip to the horse racing, arguably Hong Kong’s favourite sporting pastime. This month, the Hong Kong Derby – one of the oldest racing trophies in Hong Kong – will feature the finale of 2017 Hong Kong four-year-old classic series, with one of the largest purses on offer. Head along and revel in the palpable excitement along with thousands of eager punters. Hong Kong can proudly lay claim to the title ‘Best in Asia’ in so many ways. This month, arts, food, horse racing, and the city’s unique cityscape are just some of the delights the city has to offer. We wish you a most enjoyable visit to Hong Kong.

Hong Kong Sinfonietta: Ethereal Is the Moon

Under the baton of Music Director Yip Wing-sie, Hong Kong Sinfonietta will be joined by Taiwan’s foremost huqin player Wang Ying-chieh in the Hong Kong première of Chan Hing-yan's huqin concerto Ethereal Is the Moon. Also a huqin player himself, Chan will create a unique sound world with this thousand-year-old Chinese instrument and the modern symphony orchestra. Programme also includes Ravel's jazzinspired Piano Concerto in G (featuring Hong Kong star pianist Colleen Lee) and Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 in E-flat.

13 MAR Hong Kong Trade Development Council: Entertainment Expo 25 APR Hong Kong 2017 Entertainment Expo Hong Kong is returning for its 13th edition. The expo will again amalgamate film, TV, digital entertainment and music under one roof, attracting the very best of international celebrities, directors and industry. HKwalls Street Art Festival

HKwalls is Hong Kong’s annual street art festival aimed at creating opportunities for local and international artists to showcase their talents in Hong Kong through the mediums of street art and street culture. Each year HKwalls selects one area of Hong Kong to focus on, and gathers support and permission to paint as many exterior murals as possible, transforming blank spaces into original works of art. Hong Kong Derby

The final showdown of the 2017 Hong Kong four-yearold classic series, the Hong Kong Derby, will take place on Sunday, 19 March 2017 at Sha Tin Racecourse. Where The World Comes To Play! Hong Kong turns into a giant party town to celebrate Rugby Sevens Week! 香港七人欖球週期間，香港將變成一個狂歡派對！

he 42nd edition of the Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, the crown jewel in the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, will be held at the iconic Hong Kong Stadium on 7-9 April 2017. Over 120,000 visitors from all over the world will attend he three-day extravaganza, making it easily the biggest sports event in the city. There is a lot more than just the Sevens though – other rugby tour naments are being held, along with a slew of exciting entertainment and fan celebration events during and around what is now popularly known as ‘Sevens Week’ in Hong Kong, from 3-9 April, 2017. These include:

- Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens; two tournaments will be held: the 16-team Core Team HSBC Sevens World Series competition, and the 12-team Qualifying Competition. - HSBC Women's Sevens Tournament: this year, the women's Sevens tournament serves as the 2017 Qualifying Tournament for the HSBC Women Sevens World Series. - The Sevens Kick-off Concert, featuring Madness and From The Jam, 6 April, next to Hong Kong Stadium

The old style of rural life in southern China has now almost totally disappeared, but Hong Ko n g s t i l l p r e s e r v e s s o m e memories of it. One is the tiny hamlet of Sheung Yiu, now a folk museum situated inside scenic Sai Kung Country Park. 中國南方昔日的農家生活已幾乎完全消失，但香港仍保留了部分舊日生活記憶。上窰村位於風景優美的西貢郊野公園內，如今已改建為上窰民俗文物館。

The Old Way of Life I

n the late 19th century a Hakka family named Wong moved to Hong Kong from their ancestral home in Guangdong province. They settled by the Pak Tam Chung tidal inlet, and set up a small shop to serve neighbouring villagers and passing trade. Once business was established and it was clear that they could thrive there, they built a home at Sheung Yiu occupying an area of 500 square metres. Overlooking a narrow cove, it comprises a row of eight houses with an open yard in front. The houses are built on a platform about two metres above ground level to protect it from flooding. A high stone wall surrounds it, and a stout gate tower at the entrance protected it from invaders, a frequent occurrence in the New Territories disrupted by feuds and attacks by bandits and pirates. It incorporates a nice feature; a small opening in the wall besides the gate for the cats and dogs to use during the night. There is a single kitchen which served the extended family. It was usual for the sons to marry brides from other villages who then set up a household with the son’s family. The daughters in turn went to the village of their husband, thus it was common for a whole village to have the same surname. As with other Hakka villages, the open area in front was paved so that rice and other crops

grown nearby could be spread out to dry. The paved area also provided space for holding banquets on such occasions as weddings, festivals etc.. There are also pig and cow pens and these incorporated a sophisticated drainage system designed to collect the effluent. This was valuable as fertiliser for the fields. But as well as farming, the Wongs diversified into the building material trade. They built a kiln for producing lime just outside the village at the side of the inlet. Manufacturing lime by burning coral and shells was one of the main sources of income for coastal villages; the Sai Kung seashore was rich in coral and seashells, so resources were plentiful. Lime was used for building and farming and on the opposite shore they constructed a brick kiln to make bricks and tiles for house building. It must have been the equivalent of a modern builder’s merchant as over a hundred workers were employed in the kilns when Sheung Yiu village was at its peak. The produce was carried by boat to places in Kowloon and Hong Kong Island from a little jetty next to the village. Most of the New Territories, which was the area acquired by the British in 1897, had been left undisturbed and only after the World War II did it start to change.

昔日農家風貌十九世紀末來自廣東省的黃姓客家族人遷至香港，在北潭涌潮汐入口處定居，他們開了一間小商店，售賣商品予附近居民和路過的商人。生意上軌道後，他們開始不斷發展，在上窰建立了自己的家園，佔地面積500平方米，俯瞰一個狹窄的小海灣。一排八所並列的房舍，屋前設有曬坪。這些房舍建在距離地面約兩米的平台上，以防止洪水。四面有高聳的石牆，入口處有堅固的塔樓，以抵禦入侵者。當時的新界經常因世仇而產生騷亂以及遭到土匪和海盜的襲擊。牆壁上還有一個小開口，讓貓狗在夜晚進出。

Even before the War the use of cement had became more common and the old building methods went into decline. The use of lime became rare and the lime kiln industry also began to falter. Some of the Wong family had already left during the Japanese Occupation for Guangzhou or Sabah in Malaysia, but in the 1950s more moved to the urban areas or emigrated overseas. Because New Territories’ villagers had clan records to prove their long residence in colonial Hong Kong, it was possible for them to emigrate to Britain. One member of the Wong family still lives close by and tells of his father, Wong Kapfat, who emigrated to Bristol in England in 1953 and later opened a Chinese restaurant. By the 1965 the village of Sheung Yiu was abandoned. In 1981 the village and its neighbouring limekiln were declared historical monuments, and after restoration became the Sheung Yiu Folk Museum three years later. The cockloft above provided more storage and a sleeping area. This helps to give an idea of what living there was like. Other exhibits include farm implements like a winnowing machine and wooden moulds for making bricks, as well as everyday objects of the Hakka people. The folk museum does a good job in recreating the rural life of Sheung Yiu Village in its heyday. If you fancy a day away from the shops, Sheung Yiu makes an unusual outing. It is open on Mondays, Wednesday to Sunday: 10am to 5pm from October through February and 10am to 6pm from March through September including public holidays. Closed on Tuesdays, two days of Chinese New Year (Tel 2792 6365). To get there take the MTR to Diamond Hill, then Bus no 92 to Sai Kung and transfer to Bus no 94 to Pak Tam Chung. Once there it is a short walk clearly signposted. Take a snack with you as there are few shops in the area. ■

A testament to the organic growth of the arts in Hong Kong has been the quiet but relentless transformation of Wong Chuk Hang from former industrial area to art haven. Hong Kong has its version of street art in abundance, showcasing the city’s diverse creative talents. To encourage this flourishing scene, artists are allowed to create their drawings or painting along sidewalks or building or pavement walls. Wall art is a growing genre where some of Hong Kong's most creative artistic expression can be found. The HKwalls Festival, sponsored by HKwalls, takes place in the emerging art district of Wong Chuk Hang during the second half of this month. Expect a cool line up of mural paintings plus a print exhibition to be showcased by local aspiring artists.

n one of the most densely populated cities in the world, the urban hustle and bustle that plays out on Hong Kong’s streets, as throngs of people jostle while going about their daily business, fascinates visitors not used to such pace. But such interactions don’t only play out on the streets. Indeed, one of the striking aspects of Hong Kong’s cityscape is the extensive labyrinth of elevated pedestrian walkways, connecting and extending high-rise buildings like a giant maze. Intriguingly, in many areas of the city, it is possible to walk a kilometre or more from point A to point B without ever touching the ground. While other cities also have overhead walkways and pedestrian tunnels, it’s the scale and scope of Hong Kong’s networks that astounds, to the fascination of many visiting urban planners and academics. A 2012 book co-authored by architect academics Adam Frampton, Jonathan Solomon and Clara Wong mapped out 32 such pedestrian walkway systems around the city, surely the most extensive in the world. The benefits of these systems are manifold: firstly, they alleviate street traffic and pedestrian congestion. This is especially true when many main thoroughfares or expressways cuts through the city, effectively disconnecting neighbourhoods; the elevated walkways relink them, greatly increasing pedestrian flow and convenience. Also, almost all the overhead walkways are covered, protecting pedestrians from both sun and rain, something that can be helpful in a city with over 100 inches of rainfall annually. The walkways also provide a relaxing and safe environment to walk in, free from worry about vehicle traffic. And for the most part they lead to popular destinations: MTR and other transport exchanges, office buildings, shopping malls or residential developments, and of course they are all eminently safe as they are well lit at all hours. The city’s overhead walkways also transform conventional notions of public space. Rather than competing with motor traffic and essential calls on the public realm at ground level, these quintessentially Hong Kong public spaces liberate movement in their own maze-like world, providing an organic connectedness that redefines urban existence. A perfect example of such transformation would be a Sunday stroll through the overhead walkways by the IFC complex where thousands of Hong Kong domestic helpers camp out for the day, eating, playing, buying and selling, doing nails, and creating their own micro-culture for a day.

This is the most extensive and impressive network of overhead walkways in the city and, arguably, in the world. The network connects most of the landmark buildings, malls and public transport nodes in Central and Sheung Wan, extending as far up as the residential areas of the mid-levels perched above the city. And there are photo spots galore, many providing interesting angles and perspectives. To make sense of the network, there are three spines: a pedestrian bridge starting from the Hong Kong Macau Ferry in Sheung Wan to Exchange Square in Central. Another spine intersects at the IFC, which in turn connects to the famous Mid-Levels Escalator System, the longest escalator system in the world, winding its way up to Conduit Road high above. A third spine intersects at the Exchange Square, leading pedestrians to either the ferry terminals and the Central Harbourfront or the Lan Kwai Fong nightlife area, via Landmark and the heart of Central. A branch of that also ends at Battery Path near St. John’s Cathedral, from which one can connect to the Admiralty walkway system. And yes, you’ll never need to touch the ground or wait for traffic the whole time. For visitors we suggest trying all three spines and hop on and hop off the systems to visit the many destinations and attractions as you wish.

The system is impressive in its own right, as it connects buildings from Central to the heart of Admiralty and beyond to the Harbourfront. The hub of the system is the Admiralty MTR Station from where a long pedestrian loop connects to key office buildings in Central including Cheung Kong Centre and Three Garden Road, Central, and thence to Hong Kong Park, from where the walkways leads through Pacific Place, one of Hong Kong largest commercial complexes before linking back to the MTR station. The other spine starts from the MTR station and reaches out to the harbour through either the Government Offices Complex with its beautifully landscaped open plaza, all the way to the waterfront, or through a parallel walkway ending at Citic Tower, from which it is just a hop and a skip to the Hong Kong Exhibition and Convention Centre in Wanchai North, itself connected to a maze of overhead walkways that lead back to Wanchai MTR Station.

Tsuen Wan Walkway system 荃灣行人天橋系統

To explore and enjoy a pedestrian system with a totally different feel, take the short trip to visit the overhead walkway system in Tsuen Wan, a large satellite town on the western fringes of Kowloon, also with a lovely harbour fronting the town. Again, it’s the MTR station that serves as the starting point of the network with scores of overhead walkways connecting to nearby buildings, malls and residential developments. In fact, most of Tsuen Wan Station’s exits disgorge passengers directly onto these walkways. Consequently, retail spaces at that level are considered prime areas and command premium rents. Another long spine cuts through the town leading towards the waterfront, eventually branching off at a couple of large developments nearby, including the iconic Nina Tower as well as Tsuen Wan West MTR Station a few minutes away. Perhaps not as extensive, the Olympian City network of pedestrian walkways located in West Kowloon does allow visitors a pleasant change of urban scene, from the lush residential developments near the waterfront, through the interconnected warren of the Olympian City Shopping Malls – there are three of them, and ending in the old neighbourhoods of Tai Kok Tsui and Mongkok, including the famed Mongkok wet market. The swift change of urban scenery is stunning, and a further short walk after exiting the overhead walkways will land you in the heart of Mongkok’s famous street life, including Ladies Market, Bird Market, and several flower markets. t’s a culinary experience of which we never tire of savouring and writing – excellent Cantonese cuisine at elegant restaurants. It’s just that there are just so many to choose from here in Hong Kong, Asia’s culinary capital. Still, we soldier on with our quest. One of our choices this month is the highly acclaimed Tin Lung Heen at The Ritz-Carlton Hotel, located at the ICC, Hong Kong’s tallest skyscraper. Billed as the tallest hotel in the world, Ritz-Carton offers commanding and breathtaking views of the city, as does its restaurant, located on the 102nd floor. The two-Michelin starred restaurant is decorated in an opulent and elegant style that befits its status. And one can’t help but be distracted by the fantastic sight of the city way down below – it is the perfect place to impress your guests or loved ones. We chose a lunch for our tasting, and were served a combination of dim sum pieces and some of Tin Lung Heen’s signature dishes. We start with the Chef’s Premium Selection with three items: first came the Barbecued Iberian Pork with Honey ($320) which is so very tender with its skin perfectly charred. While the city’s most upscale outlets increasingly turn to Iberian Pork to make their traditional Char Siu (Roasted Pork), the key is still in how the meat is roasted or grilled, which, in this case, does not disappoint. The other two items are siu mai ($105) – the Steamed Pork and Scallop Dumpling with Coriander, and Steamed Pork and Prawn Dumpling with Caviar, both are generously portioned, with the scallop and prawn

each distinctively accenting the taste of the pork dumpling. The Steamed Crab Claw with Egg White in Hua Diao Wine ($305 per person) was next. The meat claw tastes firm and tender, with the wine sauce deftly helping to sweeten the flavour. This innovative dish requires perfect timing and a keen eye in the presentation, and the chef nails it on both counts. Double-boiled Cantonese soup is always a litmus test for fine Cantonese cooking, and our Double-boiled Chicken Soup with Fish Maw in Baby Coconut ($410 per person) passed with flying colours. The refreshing taste of the soup can be best described as lingering smooth and light, and the fish maw, a highly prized and priced ingredient, is savoured longingly. O u r n e x t d i s h i s S i m m e re d A s s o r t e d Vegetables and Shitake Mushroom with Superior Soup ($240), which perfectly cleanses our palates after the early flavour. In the best Cantonese cooking, the taste is defined by the soup base and ingredients used, and here the quality is apporent. Our dessert is another popular treat, Chilled Mango Cream with Sago and Pomelo ($95 per person), which tastes lightly sweet and fresh, a perfect complement to our meal. Among Chinese cuisines, Cantonese food is considered the most refined due to its subtle tastes, preparation effort, choice of ingredients and presentation. A superb meal at the luxurious Tin Lung Heen, with the whole world below you, is truly Cantonese fine dining at its best. ■

我們一直不厭其煩地為大家介紹城中高級雅緻的粵菜餐廳，但在香港這個亞洲美食之都，選擇實在是太多了！尋找香江美食任重而道遠，我們一直在努力。本月的精選餐廳之一是香港麗思卡爾頓酒店的天龍軒中餐廳，位於香港最高的摩天大樓環球貿易廣場內。香港麗思卡爾頓酒店是世界上最高的酒店，可俯瞰香港大都會的醉人景色。而天龍軒則位於第 102 層。這間米其林二星餐廳裝潢華麗優雅，落地玻璃窗外的壯麗景色盡收眼底，令人陶醉。不妨與親朋好友或摯愛相聚於此，留下美好回憶。我們在午餐時間來到天龍軒，侍應隨即為我們送上點心拼盤和天龍軒的招牌菜式。首先是包括三款點心的天龍獻粹：蜜燒西班牙黑豚肉叉燒 ($320) 外層燒至金黃色，肉質依然嫩滑。雖然近年來城中高級餐廳通常都會選擇用西班牙黑豚肉製作傳統叉燒，但製作上等叉燒的關鍵仍是廚師燒烤的功力，這一點天龍軒絕對沒有令我們失望。另外兩款點心是龍鳳燒賣皇 ($105) 其中包括香茜帶子燒賣皇和黑魚子蝦球燒賣皇。兩款燒賣分量十足，帶子和蝦球的鮮味突出了豬肉的香味，各有特色。下一道菜是花雕蛋白蒸蟹鉗 ($305/位) 蟹鉗裡面的蟹肉鮮嫩結實，配上花雕酒的味道令蟹肉更鮮甜。要將這道創意十足的菜式做好，廚師對火候的把握要十分精準，菜式賣相的要求也很高。天龍軒的廚師擁有豐富經驗，自然得心應手。粵式燉湯向來是粵菜烹飪水平的試金石。這裡的原個椰皇花膠燉雞 ($410/位) 十分出色，湯頭味道清新，順滑清甜，香氣縈繞口腔。配上名貴的花膠，更令人一試難忘。緊接著的是上湯花菇三色蔬 ($240) 清新自然的蔬菜香味就像是為我們的口腔進行大掃除。這道菜看似簡單，重點在於上湯味道的調校和食材的新鮮度，天龍軒的表現令人滿意。壓軸的甜品是人氣之選香芒楊枝甘露 ($95/位) 味道清新，甜度適中，為這一頓完美作結。在所有中菜中，粵菜被認為是難度最高的，因為粵菜味道精細，準備工夫繁複，對食材選擇和賣相的要求高。在天龍軒一邊享用高級粵式美饌，一邊俯瞰絕妙美景，絕對是難忘的餐飲體驗。■

here is always a frisson of excitement when trying out a newly opened restaurant, the sensation further heightened when the chef involved has plenty of street cred, so to speak, in the creation of innovative dishes. Such is the case with Chin’s, an upscale and elegant Chinese restaurant located on Stanley Street, right in the heart of Central, Hong Kong, and its Executive Chef, Ringo Chow, who brings over 30 years of culinary experience with the city’s top dining spots. The restaurant’s décor exudes a classy, contemporary Chinese style, starting with its restaurant logo, a Chinese calligraphic design that means: ‘Zhong Hua’ or simply ‘Chinese’. Amidst lush carpeting, tastefully decorated private rooms and fine china table settings, our adventure is off to a good start. Chin’s cuisine style can be described as pan-Chinese, in that dishes and cooking styles from some of China’s major regional cuisines are represented, including Cantonese (primarily), Huaiyang (East China), Sichuan, and Beijing. The choices available suit us just fine. For our lunch we were served an impressive combination of signature dishes and dim sum items. We started with a trio of Chin’s signature dishes: Barbecued Kagoshima Chami Pork ($280), the pork one of the finest from Japan and tastes tenderly so; Marinated Pigeon with Huadiao Wine ($180), the pigeon cooked separately before being marinated with the sweet tasting wine to ensure its firmness; and Marinated Sea Cucumber with Sichuan Peppercorn ($180), an innovative dish with just the right spicy flavour. We were then treated to – count them – six dim sum dishes! Clearly much thought and creativity have gone into each of them to set them apart,

and for the better. Their very names suggest the artisanship: Deep-fried Taro Croquette with Abalone and Caviar ($98 per person), Steamed Assorted Seafood Dumpling with Champagne Sauce ($58 per person), Steamed Shrimp Dumpling with Bamboo Shoot ($72), Steamed Shanghai Dumpling ‘Xiao long Bao’ ($54), Pan Fried Bun with Truffle and Assorted Mushroom ($54), and Marinated Pumpkin with Plum Sauce ($60). All are savoured heartily and each is exquisitely tasty. Two more main courses followed: Simmered Garoupa Fillet in Sichuan Peppercorn and Chili ($420) a highlight of the meal – the fish is fresh and tender as you would expect from a Garoupa, and the chili oil is spicy but not heavy or oily. The Stewed Ox Tail with Red Date and Carrot in Tomato Sauce ($320) is also excellent, the dish drawing its inspiration from European cooking, accented with Chinese ingredients. We finished our sumptuous meal with Simmered Bean Curd in Matsutake Sauce ($90), Wok-fried Vermicelli with Diced Chicken and Conpoy ($180) plus three deserts: Ground Almond Cream with Egg White ($48), Glutinous Rice Dumpling with Red Date Served in Ginger Soup ($48), and Chilled Sago Cream with Pomelo and Mango ($48), all of which we managed to finish despite having already eaten so well, a testament to their delicious taste. The meal left us entranced by its flavours and originality. Hardly able to move, we sat agreed that it was the little details that make Chin’s menu items stand out and outstandingly delicious. For a truly pleasant culinary experience, Chin’s is definitely near the top of the list. ■

Hokkaidon 北海丼 Japanese cuisine has always been highly popular with Hong Kong people, as evidenced by its ubiquitous presence throughout the city, with most Japanese restaurants featuring sashimi and sushi. The latest addition to quality Japanese dining is the brand-new Chirashi concept Hokkaidon, located in Cityplaza in Tai Koo Shing, which provides jet-fresh seafood imported directly from Hokkaido daily, and offers guests a special Japanese culinary experience. Hokkaidon’s décor features the rustic charm of cypress wood which generates an overall sense of Minimalism. For our meal, three signature starters were served: White Fish Carpaccio ($68), Tomato Salad with Deep-Fried Crab Meat ($88) and ‘Yukhoe’ Marinated Tuna with Avocado ($88). All three dishes taste sweet and sour, a refreshing and stimulating way to get the meal started. Next was the Salmon Roe Don which is something not to be missed; the chef will be yelling Oisa (meaning “power” in Japanese”) while filling glittering salmon roe on top of the sushi rice until it overflows. Another signature item we tried was the Tuna Mini Don ($248), a tuna combo dish that includes Prime Tuna Belly, Marinated Tuna, Chopped Tuna with Spring Onion, with each offering its own distinctive taste. We chose Hokkaido Milk Cheesecake ($48) for dessert. The sweetness of the cheesecake is well balanced; its aroma and the taste of cheese is light but definitely cheesy. Come and enjoy a pure taste of Japan at Hokkaidon!

For over a century, trams on Hong Kong Island have been an inexpensive mode of transportation. HKHA CHAIRMAN We spoke to Shaun Campbell, the newly elected Chairman of the Hong Kong Hotels Association and Managing Director of The Langham, Hong Kong, about his outlook for the city’s hotel industry and priorities for HKHA. 本期《東方之珠》很榮幸邀請到香港酒店業協會新任主席及朗廷酒店董事總經理甘貝賢接受訪問，甘先生與我們分享了他對香港酒店業的看法以及香港酒店業協會的發展。

I started my career in sports marketing in Australia, where I grew up. That meant I dealt extensively with hotels as clients, and got me thinking this would be an interesting industry to be involved with. I was right.

我在澳大利亞長大，最初從事體育活動的市場策劃，當時由於工作原因經常要與各大酒店合作，我認為酒店業應該是一個相當有趣的行業，事實證明我是對的。

The bulk of my career has been with three hotel companies – Marriott, Hyatt and now Langham, each during an interesting growth period. Across all three, I have seen the inspiring power of people in growing a brand, and bringing it to life. I have been fortunate to work with some great teams that have created so many great memories for guests. It continues to be easy to go to work each day!

在我的職業生涯中，我曾任職於三間酒店—萬豪酒店、凱悅酒店和現在的朗廷酒店。我在每間工作過的酒店都見證了那裡的人如何憑著自己的能力幫助品牌成長。我有幸地與出色的團隊合作，我們一同為酒店顧客們創造了不少美好回憶。每天的工作對我來說都是輕鬆愉悅的！

Whilst demand from China has definitely softened in recent years, across our HKHA member hotels we still enjoyed occupancies constantly above 80%, which is considered robust for most markets. Regardless, Hong Kong’s hotel industry has been always resilient and we continue to improve our standards and product offerings to meet market challenges. We are seeing some recovery in other short-haul and long-haul markets, and with 2017 likely to be a fairly stable year with moderate growth.

近年來訪港內地旅客人數有一定跌幅，但香港酒店業協會會員仍能保持80%以上的入住率，這個數字對於大多數其他地區來說是很高的。無論如何，香港酒店業的適應能力很強，為了面對市場的挑戰，我們一直致力於提高標準和服務質素。來自其他地區的短途和長途市場的需求開始復蘇，預計2017年將是平穩中稍有增長的一年。

Our association, the HKHA, will continue to engage actively with HKTB and the government to ensure that we keep Hong Kong relevant and exciting as a key must-visit destination in Asia. The “Best of All it’s in Hong Kong” campaign was pleasing to see, and the result of this regular dialogue, which projects a stronger image of Hong Kong’s personality – through local eyes – should help sharpen Hong Kong’s image and tourism positioning. To boost visitor arrivals, as we did in 2016, we will continue to collaborate with HKTB on short breaks for couples and families, as well as support for bringing mid-size group and incentive business. With respect to our tourism sector, I believe our biggest challenge is to continue to communicate our destination story in as many creative and compelling ways as we can. Hong Kong tourism is still very robust, but we are also not the only option for the large China outbound market and short-haul Asian travellers. We’re in a much smaller media world, where it is easier for emerging destinations like Myanmar and a recovering Japan to make noise and gain share within leisure and conference travel sectors. Hong Kong has such a can-do culture, we need to continue to tell our Hong Kong story and leverage all the attributes that our destination has – safe, clean and easy to move around; great culinary experiences with rich diversity of cuisines; and fabulous, approachable local people that assist visitors getting around. What I like best about Hong Kong is the people – I have been lucky enough to live and work in so many destinations across Asia, India and the Pacific. Hong Kong is the longest posting I have had in my career, and it’s always such a pleasure to live and work with highly talented locals amid a diverse expat community. As to recommendations for visitors, I would suggest trying out our latest offerings. Hong Kong embraces new ideas so quickly and creatively, two of the latest being local craft beers and the food truck scene. A trip to Kennedy Town or Mongkok gives visitors the chance to sample both.
