In the last few years, Sai Yin Pun, just west of Sheung Wan, has developed a vibrant dining scene. Along several hillside streets parallel to Queens Road West, scores of eateries and bars have cropped up, serving an eclectic mix of expatriate and local customers.
A new addition to this area is Lobster Shack, located on Second Street. And, judging by its early success even in the face of the pandemic, Lobster Shack is the perfect example of an outlet finding the right niche and thriving in it.
Operated by the up-and-coming Bistro Concept Group, which runs four other restaurants in Sai Yin Pun, Lobster Shack specialises in hearty, classic comfort-style seafood fare, especially lobster dishes. The bistro is cosy, comfortable, and perpetually busy.
Lobster Shack impresses with generous portions of excellent food. The restaurant serves an appetising menu of soups, salads, small bites, plus a plethora of lobster, crab, fish and scallop dishes as well as vegetarian items and desserts.
We chose four full-sized dishes, which were more than filling. The Lobster Egg Benedict ($168) is a real treat and a winner off the bat. This classic dish with tender chunks of lobster meat added in good for either breakfast or lunch. Next is Grilled Lobster ($188/half and $299/ full) served with garlic lemon butter, fries and salad. The lobster meat is succulent and firm, and nicely grilled.
Sole Fish & Chips ($188) beer and batter fish served with fries, salad and tartar sauce is another favourite. We were told the beer used is Stella Artois, which is obviously available on tap as well.
The last dish we tried was Creamy Lobster Linguine ($248), with chopped garlic, basil, lobster bisque, whole wine, and lemon juice. The linguine is creamy, chewy and flavourful, and filling too.
We had a crisp and refreshing 2018 Pascal Jolivet Sauvignon Blanc Attitude ($80/glass and $398/bottle) from the lovely Loire Region in France; the chilled wine complemented the various seafood dishes nicely.
If you are looking for a hearty and appetising seafood meal, Lobster Shack is an excellent choice. Check out the vibrant neighbourhood while you’re there.

Yaki Oni

Causeway Bay, Hong Kong’s renowned shopping district, is also a haven for Japanese food. The latest addition to this nexus, Yaki Oni, which specialises in yakiniku cuisine – grilled bite-sized meats and vegetables, is destined to make a mark on the local Japanese dining landscape. What makes Yaki Oni stand out is its business proposition – an all-you-can-eat format featuring quality items at reasonable prices. Oh, and all you can drink too!
Yaki Oni’s culinary theme draws on the legend of hyakki yagyo, known as the night parade of a hundred demons, which inspires Yaki Oni’s décor, design and food. The restaurant specialises in A4 Wagyu beef from Kagoshima and Miyazaki – 10 cuts in all, including the “Ox Demon Platter” that feature eight cuts of Wagyu including rump, flank, short ribs and hanger steak. There are 10 cuts of USDA beef available as well.
In addition to beef, Yaki Oni also serves Sashimi, Sushi, Appetisers, Salad, Noodles, Soup, Rice, Vegetables and hot dishes, plus Desserts. We tried and enjoyed most of it, including generous helpings of Wagyu beef, of course.
Other meats include various cuts of Pork Belly, plus Sausage; the poultry dishes include Chicken Wings and Fillet; and there are quality seafood items such as Scallops, Oysters, Shrimp, Fish and Squid. Yaki Oni also serves Colour-themed Cocktails, Wines, Beers, and a good selection of Sakes, all at reasonable prices.
During normal periods when there are no dine-in restrictions, Yaki Oni’s price per person depends on the meal slot: $298 from 5 to 7pm; $378 from 7.15 to 9.15pm; and $348 from 9.30pm to 11.00 pm. There is a surcharge of $20 on Fridays to Sundays and on public holidays. Yaki Oni also offers Free-flow Soft Drinks and Juices for $48 more and Free-flow Sake for $128 more. Plus, for $98 more guests can enjoy A4 Wagyu beef plus soft drinks and juices – a real bargain. Currently, Yaki Oni is offering its lunch-hour service at $298 per person.
Dining is relaxed and fun at Yaki Oni; you can get full in a hurry too. For a fun and filling dining experience, we highly recommend it.

Club Rangoon
The recent opening of Club Rangoon, touted as the first Burmese restaurant in Hong Kong, piqued our curiosity. Located on Hollywood Road in Soho, Club Rangoon has a friendly vibe and a modern, homely ambience, with striking images of everyday Burmese life adorning its walls.
The driving force of the enterprise is Nelson Htoo, a young expat from Myanmar by way of Singapore. He has clearly put his heart into Club Rangoon, as a tribute to the Burmese food culture that he grew up with, so we were all excited to try the new experience.
For lunch, Club Rangoon offers a Set Lunch ($180/person), a series of classic Burmese dishes. The starter is Lahpet Thoke, made from fermented tea leaves and packed with a mix of healthy ingredients such as toasted sesame seeds, fried garlic, roasted peanuts, sliced tomatoes and shredded cabbage, all seasoned with fish sauce. The combination is a unique and special taste.
The next item is Samusa (like samosa) with a choice of Potato or Mutton ($20 extra); both are excellent. For the main, we had Mohinga, a rice noodle and fish soup dish generally considered the national dish of Myanmar. The ingredients include vermicelli noodles, catfish, fish sauce, fish paste, ginger, banana stem, lemongrass, onions, garlic, and chickpea flour. The soup is tasty and flavourful and well deserving of its moniker.
The other main course we chose was A Mel Thar Dan Bauk, which is beef biryani prepared Burmese-style.
For desserts we tried Sa Nwin Makin, a spongy and light semolina cake that is popular on the street.
We also tried Club Rangoon’s signature cocktails – a refreshing Klear Kaffir Punch ($130) – kaffir lime–infused Flor de Cana rum, lychee juice, coconut milk, Falernum syrup, lime juice, and Jodhpur Gin & Imperdibile Superior Tonic ($120)
The restaurant offers a special HTA Min Wine Weekend Menu ($700/ for two persons) that includes a tableful of Burmese dishes (10 dishes) for brunch, the perfect way to while away an afternoon.
Club Rangoon turned out to be a most pleasant find. We had a tasty meal and an enjoyable experience. Do give it and Burmese food a try!
