e welcome you to Hong Kong and to CityLife, the monthly magazine for visitors to Asia’s World City.

This month, the 2018 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Tournament, Hong Kong’s premier sporting event, takes centre stage once again. Now in its 43rd year, the Hong Kong Sevens is unquestionably the crown jewel in the ever more popular HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series circuit. The three-day event promises non-stop, exciting and entertaining rugby play. Vying for attention will be the jubilant fans from around the world, bedecked in outrageous and colourful costumes, celebrating and partying in the stands.

There are other rugby events organised around the Rugby Week as well, plus a two-week long festival and a concert. And the bars and restaurants will be packed as the city turns into one giant party town. While the event is long sold out, as it is every year, you may still find tickets on the secondary market. In any case, you can revel in the atmosphere by taking in other events and joining the party in the main bar areas. April is also a gorgeous time to take in all the outdoor activities that Hong Kong has to offer. It may come as a surprise to visitors that, with its high population density and serried ranks of skyscrapers notwithstanding, the city is a green metropolis, with 70 percent of the city made up of islands, mountains, beaches and wetland areas. Please go to our cover story on page 12 for recommendations of outdoor activities you can explore, many only minutes away from the city centre.

Also, this month, the Hong Kong Electronics Fair (Spring edition), one of the largest electronic trade shows in Asia, and the International ICT Expo will again be held concurrently. Expect over 3,500 exhibitors from around the globe to showcase the latest next-gen electronics products and ICT solutions to global buyers.

And if you want enthralling entertainment, the famed Cirque Du Soleil is in town with its new production Kooza. The show serves up a thrilling acrobatic performance imbued with the art of clowning and old-fashioned circus acts refined by Cirque Du Soleil’s signature artistic touches.

And for sheer fun and excitement, why not go to a horse race, Hong Kong’s favourite pastime, at one of the city’s world-famous race courses. It’s a truly unique experience and a big part of Hong Kong’s social culture.

You may even get lucky too!

Rashomon by Fay Kanin and Michael Kanin

Adapted from Ryūnosuke Akutagawa’s short stories Rashomon and In a Grove, Rashomon is an intriguing tale of violent crime told from the perspective of four different characters — a bandit, a woman, her husband and a woodcutter. Only two things about the incident seem to be clear — the woman was raped and her husband is now dead. However, the other elements radically differ as the four participants and/or witnesses relate their own stories as each account is revealed, what first appeared as a black-and-white situation turns into various hues of grey, leading to surprising — and confounding — revelations.

Cirque du Soleil's KOOZA

KOOZA is a new production with a cast of 50 acrobats, actors, musicians and singers from 19 countries, paying homage to their roots by combining thrilling, heart-stopping acrobatic performance with the art of clowning. Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra: Listening to

20-21 Nature APR Resident Conductor Chew Hee Chiat will be your guide to the wondrous realm of nature, including wind, thunder, rain and snow. To capture the real sounds of nature, the Hong Kong Chinese Orchestra has commissioned renowned Malaysian composer Yii Kah-hoe to create a new piece of work that reproduces these sounds. He and his production team went into the rainforest and roamed the countryside to make on-site recordings for the audience to hear an amazing dialogue between electronic sounds and nature at the concert.

2018 Ice Hockey 5’s

The Hockey 5’s is a 12-day tournament, with around 100 teams participating. It consists of a youth division (aged 5–16) and an adult division (aged 17 and above), with contests held from 23–28 April and 30 April to 5 May respectively. All games are open to the public, and admission is free.

and International ICT Expo will be held concurrently at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. Organised by the Hong Kong Trade Development Council, the two fairs will enter their 15th editions to provide an international platform for around 3,500 exhibitors to showcase their latest electronics products and cutting-edge ICT solutions to global buyers. In 2017, the twin fairs welcomed more than 94,000 buyers from 138 countries and regions.

Queen Elizabeth II Cup Race Meeting

The Queen Elizabeth II Cup Race Meeting is one of the most anticipated social racing events in Hong Kong. This year, two more Group 1 races, the Champions Mile and the Chairman’s Sprint Prize, will take place on the same day to form an exciting Group 1 triple-header in the international racing calendar. The Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, the crown jewel of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series competition, returns for its 2018 edition as eagerly anticipated as ever. whole week of high-octane tournaments is slated, led by the 16-team Sevens Series core competition. Other contests will be equally riveting. The 12-team Men’s Qualifier competition will be held in Hong Kong once again, with the host team having a real shot at winning a spot on next year’s Series. At the same time, Hong Kong will also host the 12-team World Rugby Women's Sevens Series Qualifier. The stakes are high and expect fierce competition among the qualifying national teams, including Hong Kong.

THE JEWISH CENTRE OF HONG KONG 居港猶太人 1

There are many prominent Jewish families in Hong Kong and the facilities for them provide a historic reminder of Hong Kong’s multicultural past. 香港有許多著名的猶太人家庭，他們日常使用的設施讓人們回想起香港多元文化的歷史。

ews arrived in Hong Kong at the time of the British in the mid 19th century, but it wasn’t until the colony began to thrive that greater numbers of Baghdadi traders came to the territory. Baghdadi was the term given to Jews from the Middle East, Persia and Afghanistan who emigrated to escape political and religious harassment, and deteriorating economic conditions. More arrived after the Second World War and the Jewish people, though small in number, remain an active community, well-integrated into Hong Kong business life. Hong Kong’s long history of religious tolerance has fostered respect for beliefs from many different backgrounds and cultures.

As with other early Hong Kong traders, some succumbed to tropical diseases and there was a need for a cemetery. Like many other cemeteries, the Jewish cemetery is located in Happy Valley, at 13 Shan Kwong Road. A plaque notes that it was established in 1855 by its benefactor the Honourable David Sassoon. The Sassoons were among the earliest Sephardic merchants from India to settle in Hong Kong, during the mid to late 19th century. It was extended in 1904 whilst Matthew Nathan was the Governor; the only Jewish Governor of Hong Kong. He is better known these days for Nathan Road, the main

north-south thoroughfare on the Kowloon Peninsula. There is a map of the cemetery mounted on the wall of one building with a list of those buried there.

The Hong Kong Jewish Community was first established in 1857. The first synagogue, whose original meaning is ‘congregation’ or ‘gathering’, was set up in a rented house on Hollywood Street in 1870. It was replaced by a dedicated synagogue built by Sir Jacob Sassoon, a banker and descendant or David Sassoon, in memory of his mother, Leah Sassoon. The Ohel Leah Synagogue was constructed in 1901.

The synagogue was designed by architects Leigh and Orange in baroque style. The original design featured a red brick exterior with white detailing and an internal layout in the Sephardi style. Just three years after the synagogue opened, in 1905, another great Baghdadi dynasty - the Kadoorie family, funded the building of a Jewish Recreation Club on the synagogue grounds. The club had a large hall, restaurant, bar, library and billiards room as well as tennis courts and a view over the harbour. It is hard to picture how idyllic this setting must have been back then. Now blocks of flats tower over the synagogue and restrict the views from the site.

Japanese but suffered little damage and the Torah scrolls were smuggled out and safely hidden until the end of the War. In 1949, the Kadoorie family again financed the building of a new Recreation Club on the site of its predecessor.

Ohel Leah is a Grade I historic building, built in typical synagogue style with a symmetrical two-storey structure. The arched portico leads to the assembly hall where, apart from two stone pillars supporting the balcony on the first floor where women sit during services, there is nothing obstructing the view of the hall. Instead, the building is supported by ten outside pillars acting as flying buttresses. Light streams into the hall, and along with the marble floor tiles of white and light grey, combines to give an airy and spiritual feeling conducive to worship. In the centre of the synagogue is the bimah, or altar, where the Rabbi reads from the Torah. The importance of the bimah is indicated by the fact it is five steps above the ground facing the silver ark at the end of the assembly hall, where the Torah scrolls are stored. Wooden pews line the walls and wooden staircases lead to the balcony.

In 1992, following a study which cast doubt on the stability of the adjacent slopes, the club was closed and the site was redeveloped to fund the engineering works.

However, the Jewish Recreation Club and the Jewish Community Centre, which form the centre of Jewish social and religious life in Hong Kong, were re-established in the new development. The synagogue underwent a $50 million restoration in 1998 which won the Outstanding Project Award of 2000 from UNESCO. It is situated on Robinson Road near Castle Road and can be accessed via the Hillside Escalator. The adjacent Community Centre with restaurants, a kindergarten, library and other recreational facilities provide a social venue for the many Jewish families who live in the popular residential neighbourhood of Mid Levels. ■

During the Second World War, Hong Kong was occupied by the Japanese. Many local Jews were interned in prisoner of war camps and the recreation club was totally destroyed.

Hiking: Dragon’s Back 遠足：龍脊 Hong Kong abounds in hiking trails, most of them located in country parks. The most famous, and certainly one of the most scenic, is the Dragon’s Back – a series of mountain ridges on the eastern part of Hong Kong Island from Chai Wan to the Shek O and Big Wave beaches. The hike is rated ‘moderate’ – suitable for all ages – and once you reach the ridge following a level hike and short ascent, the spectacular view of the South China Sea and the green hills beyond await. The views never disappoint.

Take Bus No. 9 from Shau Kei Wan and get off at the Chai Wan correctional Institute, then walk up a short distance to the connecting Hong Kong Trail. You can choose to descend either to Big Wave Bay or to the beach hamlet of Shek O, for food and refreshment.

Pok Fu Lam Reservoir 薄扶林水塘 Hong Kong’s many reservoirs are great getaways. They usually offer hiking trails, vantage points and cookout facilities available for the public for free of charge. At Pok Fu Lam Reservoir, in western Hong Kong Island, enjoy a leisurely stroll around the reservoir and then you may wish to hike up the trail that leads to the Peak, which only takes 45 minutes, where the spectacular panoramic view of Victoria harbour awaits.

Lamma Island 南丫島 Hong Kong has many outlying islands that are easily accessible to visitors. One of the more idyllic is Lamma Island located just south of Hong Kong Island. Take a ferry from Central to Yung Shue Wan; explore the paths around the local village (there are no cars), then take the trail that leads to Sok Kwu Wan at the other end of the island. The hike is moderate, and you will pass a beach and small hills which afford you stunning vistas along the way. End your trip at Sok Kwu Wan with a seafood meal at one of the many fresh seafood restaurants before heading back on a ferry from there.

Sai Kung — Long Ke Beach & Ham Tin Beaches 西貢浪茄灣及鹹田灣 The Sai Kung Peninsula is Hong Kong’s version of the Garden of Eden. If moderately strenuous hiking and unspoiled beaches are your thing, then you are in for a treat. Take Bus 94 from Sai Kung Town Centre to Pak Tam Chung, then take a taxi to the High Island’s East Dam where Maclehose Trail Section 2 starts. A short hike will take you to Long Ke Beach, a remote, scenic beach. The same trail then takes you to the Ham Tin beaches, a series of expansive, white-sand beaches with gorgeous vistas and foliage. End your hike at Pak Tam Au, where you can catch a bus back to Sai Kung Centre. Be sure to stop by one of the many seafood restaurants along the waterfront and enjoy a most deserving seafood dinner.

Take MTR to Hang Hau and then a Green Minibus 101M to Sai Kung Town Centre.

Hong Kong UNESCO Geopark 香港聯合國教科文 組織世界地質公園 Recognized by the United Nations as unique geological sites, the Hong Kong Geopark, also located in Sai Kung Peninsula, is certainly not something one expects to see In Hong Kong. The park offers fascinating geological formations along the coast formed by ancient volcanic activity followed by millions of years of wave erosion. The park offers guided tours and educational activities throughout the year. A birdwatcher’s haven, April is not too late to watch migratory birds making their way north from their winter migration. The park is also a paradise for amateur and serious photographers alike.

Cycling from Shatin to Tai Po 沙田至大埔單車遊

Despite Hong Kong’s hilly terrain, cycling is becoming more popular as a recreation. The most well-known dedicated bike path goes from Shatin to Tai Po in the New Territories. You can rent bicycles from any of the three locations and the ride along the scenic Tolo Harbour is flat, relaxing and safe. It’s a bike ride to suit the whole family or a group of friends. Take MTR to Shatin Station, Exit A, walk to Shing Mun River via New Town Plaza and Sha Tin Park. Cheung Sha Beaches/ Tai O Village 長沙泳灘/大澳漁村 Located in Lantau, Cheung Sha Beaches (Lower and Upper) presents a long stretch of shallow, smooth sandy beaches perfect for swimming and, yes, clamming. There are restaurants on the beach catering to visitors. If you want to stretch your visit to a full day, then you may want to vist Tai O Village at the western end of Lantau, a popular tourist destination and a quaint fishing village where residents still live on stilted houses over water and who have managed to preserve much of their traditional way of life.

Take the ferry from Central Pier to Mui Wo, Lantau and take Lantau Bus 1 to Cheung Sha Beach, as well as to Tai O Village.

s Asia’s World City with a population that is always on the lookout for the next ‘in’ thing, it’s unsurprising that Hong Kong is at the front of the curve when it comes to embracing the latest urban lifestyle trends, whether in fashion, music or food, especially among the millennials. The Cupping Room The founded by a former barista champion of Hong Kong, this specialty coffee shop, which opened its first outlet in Stanley, on Hong Kong Island, has become one of the more popular coffee houses in the city, now operating four outlets, having spread to Sheung Wan, Wanchai and Central.

Cupping Room sources its coffees from around the world with a preference for sweetness and aroma, taking advantage of the coffee beans’ seasonality. The founder’s passion is reflected in the meticulous manner the coffee is roasted and brewed. Cupping Room also serves a complement of yummy food including scrambled eggs on sourdough, pastries and sandwiches.

Knockbox Coffee Company This highly regarded coffee house in the heart of Mongkok takes artisanal coffee brewing to a new level. Knockbox has a loyal following of coffee aficionados, many of whom gather on Friday afternoons for its weekly Coffee Premier tasting session. Halfway Coffee 半路咖啡 The one neighbourhood which best reflects Hong Kong’s unique east meet west culture must be Sheung Wan. With a large influx of expatriates, many from France, this once local neighbourhood known for its streets laid out with drying seafood, old buildings and temples has been transformed into tony areas of trendy restaurants, bars and, yes, specialty coffee houses. One that stands out is Halfway Coffee, tucked away in upper Sheung Wan just below Hollywood Road, which serves quality coffee on Hong Kong vintage porcelain cups. While the porcelain cup is what gets noticed, make no mistake, the coffee here is good too. The shop has become a hot Instagram spot for its serving cups.

This month, we visited two restaurants in search of excellent contemporary Chinese cuisine and came back impressed. 本月 ，《東方之珠》造訪了兩間出色的高級中菜食府，水準着實令人驚嘆。

anhai No.1, located on the top floor of iSQUARE in Tsim Sha Tsui and with a commanding view of Victoria Harbour, is a favourite dining hotspot for both locals and visitors. Operated

by Elite Concepts, a restaurant group specialising in contemporary and themed high-end dining, the restaurant serves a broad variety of quality Chinese cuisines. The setting is spacious, contemporary and comfortable. The high ceiling creates an airy ambience, helped by the bright skyline that surrounds the restaurant. The iconic Eyebar, located in the same premises and where guests can enjoy the stunning harbour view from its open-air terrace, further cements the restaurant’s status as a much sought-after dining destination.

to make sure that the skin of the baked chicken is crispy and crunchy, while the meat remains moist and tender, an outcome that is easier to describe than to achieve.

The tea smoking adds a nice twist to the flavour.

The restaurant is one of our standout favourites whenever we are in the mood for quality Chinese food, good company, relaxed environment, and something from this excellent wine selection to complement our dishes. Nanhai No.1 has a sommelier who is well-briefed on picking just the right wines to go with Chinese food, something that has gained tremendous popularity in recent years and for which Nanhai No.1, has gained a reputation, in addition to its gourmet seafood cuisine.

More treats await. Stir-fried chili prawns accompanied with crispy bean curd rolls ($218) is mildly spicy and sweet, and tasty, the meat tender and firm. The bean curd rolls help to balance the palate nicely. The final dish, Crispy and steamed rice served in lobster sauce ( $208) was a pleasant surprise. We really liked how the flavour of the rich lobster nice was absorbed by the crispy rice, and the vegetable condiments add the right amount of texture and taste.

Our seafood lunch started with King Prawn served in Bang Sauce (with fried mantou) ($118 per piece).

The meat of the prawn is succulent, and the tangy sauce adds just that delightful bite to the flavour; the mantou (Chinese bread) helps to soak up the sauce.

Next came the Jasmine tea smoked chicken ($240/ half), one of the signature dishes. The key to this dish is

The highly anticipated Deep fried spotted garoupa with crispy lemon grass ($568 for 600g) is next. As any seafood aficionado will attest, garoupa caught in the deep sea are highly prized, with prices to match. There are good reasons for their popularity. Properly prepared, the fish fillet tastes tender but firm, each bite of the meat gives just that little bounce. For our dish, the spotted garoupa tastes delicious, thanks to deep frying the fish just enough to preserve the meat’s savoury flavour and tenderness, while being able to enjoy the crispy deepfried skin and bones. This fish was quickly consumed.

Two Chinese desserts completed a most satisfying meal.

If you are looking for a memorable gourmet meal in a fabulous setting, Nanhai No.1 is a top choice.■

dd Ying Jee Club to the list of impressive fine dining Cantonese restaurants in the city, one that offers an elegant ambience, attentive service and exquisitely prepared Cantonese dishes. This recently opened establishment, located in Central, has the impressive distinction of earning a One-Michelin Star award after only three months of operation, thanks in part to its head chef Siu Hin Chi, who has earned cumulatively 15 Michelin stars in his endeavours prior to taking control of Ying Jee Club’s culinary operation.

Befitting of a fine-dining restaurant, Ying Jee’s decor is upscale, contemporary Chinese; its dominant emerald and gold theme conveying a n a i r o f p ro s p e r i t y a n d e l e g a n c e . S u b t l e touches, including jade-like serving plates, fine cutlery, and subtle wooden panel floors exude an understated opulence. Ying Jee Club provides several private rooms, and a carefully chosen wine list with over 300 offerings rounds out the set-up.

We tried the Executive Lunch ($620 per person) which is the full-on menu for lunch.

The restaurant also offers a regular lunch set available for $380 per person. Two additional signature dishes were ordered, augmenting an already sumptuous meal.

Our lunch started with some light and refreshing appetisers: a combo of Marinated Pork with Jellyfish and Marinated Japanese Cucumber with Balsamic Vinegar. Next came the Ying Jee Dim Sum Combination. We should note that Ying Jee serves a full complement of dim sum dishes. We would have happily partaken of a dim-sum–only meal, judging from the quality of our dim sum platter, which consists of Har Gao – the steamed shrimp dumpling, a very special Pineapple Roasted Pork Bun, and

the crispy Deep-fried Spring Roll.

The Steamed Spotted Garoupa with Egg White in Chicken Broth came next – a creatively concocted dish – the fish fillet is tender, and the egg white contrasts nicely with the fish.

We then had the two signature dishes not included in the lunch set: Stir-fried Sliced Lobster with Shallot, Red Onion and Spring Onion ($380 per person), the preparation of which involves dipping the lobster in hot oil and then wok frying it for just a few seconds, ensuring that the lobster meat remains juicy on the inside; and Crispy Salted Chicken ($280/ half), another delicacy involving an elaborate sequence of air-drying, baking and deep frying the skin – the result is tasty-moist chicken meat, crispy skin and deliciously salty flavour.

Back to our set lunch and the Pan-fried Diced Australian Wagyu Beef with Soy Sauce.

The portion is generous, and the beef cubes are succulent and tender, accented by the subtle soy flavour. Then we had Poached Chinese Lettuce with Wonton in Fish Soup and Fried Rice with Scallops and Avocado. Both dishes exemplified the refined nature of Cantonese cooking. Our dessert of the day was a trio of Baked sago pudding filled with lotus seed paste ($55 per person), Glutinous rolls filled with custard egg yolk cream and shredded coconut ($54 per dish /3 pieces) and Baked pastries filled with kumquat and pineapple ($54 per dish /3 pieces), which pretty much maxed us out.

O u r v i s i t t o Yi n g J e e C l u b w a s a m p l y rewarded – we appreciate why the restaurant is so highly touted. It represents Cantonese fine dining at its best, and we unreservedly recommend it if you are looking for a special gourmet treat.■

From now till 13 May, Langham Hotel is partnering with the luxury fragrance brand Cochine to present the Sweet Blossom After Tea with an enchanting Vietnamese touch at its Palm Court lobby lounge.

Drawing inspiration from Cochine’s famous scents, the tea set serves bite-size pastries which include the Vietnamese Cassava coconut dacquoise with Jasmine mousse, Frangipani Canele, Girl with the Tuberose, a choux pastry with fig and Sicilian lemon compost, La Rose, a rose-shaped pavlova meringue plus Scented Candle, a white chocolate and green cardamom mousse.

The savoury treats of the afternoon tea offer a twist of old Saigon as a tribute to the origin of the fragrance brand. They include Mini “Bánh Mì” Brioche, a thinly sliced beef roll with shredded carrots, liver pâté, pickles and cucumber sitting on the bread, drizzled with a special Vietnamese dressing consisting of lime juice and Thai basil. Another exotic piece is the Slow Cooked Roulade of Organic Chicken on Homemade Pesto Bread, highlighting the blend of sweet chili sauce and mayonnaise spread between the bread layers.

美食情報 Deng G 鄧記

Wan Chai, one of Hong Kong’s oldest neighbourhoods, has become a trendy dining enclave, accelerated by redevelopment and self-reinvention of areas on its southern flank. One bright dining spot has been Deng G, a trendy Sichuan restaurant featuring a contemporary Bai Jiu (Chinese liquor) Bar, which serves a full complement of beers, wines, cocktails and yes, interesting Chinese liquor

cocktail concoctions. More than its libations, Deng G’s has been garnering rave reviews from foodies for its authentic Sichuan dishes – quality ingredients of fish, meat and vegetables prepared in sweat-inducing spicy and zesty sauces and soup bases.

Deng G is popular at lunchtime for its various set lunch options, including a quick-and-hearty set for only $82 that includes one entrée selection and noodles or rice. Its dinner menu, created and meticulously overseen by its Sichuan-based chef and restaurateur Mr Deng, features many Sichuan favourites. The highly flavourful dishes we tried included Mala Beef Jerky ($88). Okra with Ginger Sauce ($58) which is cool and refreshing, the signature Braised Sliced Mandarin Fish in Red Chili Soup ($398) which is classically prepared, Steamed Fish Head with Chopped Pepper ($228), Pork Dumplings, Chengdu Style ($52 for 4 pieces), and for dessert a light but delicious Fermented Glutinous Rice in Ice Powder ($28).

If you are partial to Sichuan spicy food, as we are, Deng G is a more than worthy choice. Book early.

Komune

Komune, located at the chic boutique hotel Ovolo Southside in the up-and-coming neighbourhood Wong Chuk Hang, is a pleasant hidden gem for foodies looking for innovative drinks and creative international cuisine.

The restaurant features an indoor dining space, a shipping container bar and a large garden terrace, allowing versatile use of the venue. Komune’s colourful, hip decor creates a lively and relaxing atmosphere.

Mixology is a prominent feature of Komune’s dining experience, attested by its partnership with international cocktail consultant Cocktail Professor. In addition, Komune serves an excellent collection of craft beers, wines, beers and coffee for discerning customers.

Komune’s all-day dining menu, created by awardwinning chef Alvardo Ramos, offers South American and Mediterranean cuisine with a creative twist of pan-Asian fusion informed by Ramos’ travels in Asia. Whether it’s tapas or sharing plates of entrees or desserts, the dishes are uniformly tasty and distinctive. They include Wagyu Beef Tartare, Korean-style Quail Egg and Soy Sauce ($118), its famous Rainbow Tacos from a really cool serving plate ($88), Hamachi Served in Peruvian Traditional Style, Swimming

22 Mar-22 Apr. The Poetry of Colors, the inaugural collection of paintings by Asia-based Swiss artist Philippe Caretti, is reminiscent of the action painting, or gestural abstraction, of the mid-20th century.

But one of the collection’s distinctive element is Caretti’s unique and unusual choice of tools: syringes. The paint is first drawn into the syringe, and afterwards, skillfully expelled to form the envisaged lines, swirls, dots, blotches, or patterns. To the artist, the unpredictability of mishaps in the process of artistic creation resembles the uncontrollable in one’s life, and the challenge of creating something from those unpredictable moments is an invigorating and eye-sharpening process.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Porcelain and Painting 9 Feb–19 Nov 2018 Chao Shao-an and Yang Shanshen settled in Hong Kong in the 1940s. They often met together in the Lingnan Art Studio, and they have spent their leisure and created joint paintings. When they made friends with the owner of the Yuet Tung China Works, Tso Wing Shui, they tried their hands at painting on porcelain using their own artistic style.

This exhibition features their joint works on paper and on porcelain, selected from private collections which remain little known. Visitors will see how the two masters carried out their artistic dialogue in these works, and how they brought their own signature style from works on paper into works on porcelain.
