With mild temperatures and spring in full bloom, the month of March is the perfect time to visit the city.

Above all, March in Hong Kong has turned into a giant art smorgasbord, with premier art festivals supported by a slew of other art shows and exhibitions. Given Hong Kong’s reputation as one of the world’s big three art auction markets, with multiple concentrations of art galleries and antique shops, plus its burgeoning local creative scene, the city fully justifies its moniker as Asia’s art hub. The headliner this month is of course the prestigious Art Basel, being held in Hong Kong for the sixth year in a row. Thousands of art lovers, collectors, galleries and artists will flock here from all over the world, making it the premier art event in Asia. Other art events including Art Central, the Asia Contemporary Art Show and the ongoing Hong Kong Arts Festival, plus a myriad of local art events. Please check out our cover story on page 10 for more details.

The fine March weather means there is no better way to visit the city than by exploring Hong Kong’s cool neighbourhoods on foot. If you are in the mood for some fun street-market shopping while picking up a sense of how locals here go out about their daily lives, then a walking tour of Sham Shui Po – a fascinating neighbourhood in Kowloon, famous for selling electronic and electrical products and its idiosyncratic flea market – makes for an ideal outing. Exploring the many street markets of Sham Shui Po is a veritable treasure hunt; be sure to try out some of the fabulous local food as well.

Please go to page 16 for our suggested walking tour of Sham Shui Po. Lovers of fine food will want to drop by Taste of Hong Kong held at the Central Harbourfront. March at the AsiaWorld-Expo, and the 35th Hong Kong International Jewellery Show from 1 to 5 March at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre. The twin shows anticipate a total of more than 4,480 exhibitors from over 50 countries and regions, forming the world’s largest jewellery marketplace. In 2017, the shows attracted more than 85,000 buyers from 144 countries and regions.

Hong Kong Arts Month

This March, immerse yourself in the world of the arts, right here in Hong Kong. A host of international artists and works are coming to the city during the annual Hong Kong Arts Month, including fabulous performances at the 46th Hong Kong Arts Festival, and innovative creations at Art Basel, Art Central and the Harbour Arts Sculpture Park.

2018 Hong Kong Sevens: Where The World Comes To Play!

he highly anticipated Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens, the crown jewel of the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series, now in its 43rd edition, will take place at the Hong Kong Stadium on 6-8 April. The fun-filled package promises plenty of hands-on activity for all, as well as pulsating, street festival celebration, partying and music throughout the city.

A slew of other sporting and entertainment events will be held in the 16 days leading up to the tournament, highlighted by what is popularly known as “Sevens Week” in Hong Kong, from 24 March – 8 April. The

- Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens; two men’s tournaments will be held: the 16-team HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series event, and the 12-team qualifier tournament for next season’s Series.

- World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series Qualifier: As last year, the Hong Kong Women’s Sevens serves as the qualifying tournament for next season’s HSBC World Rugby Women’s Sevens Series, with 12 teams competing.

- Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong Sevens Festival at Lee Gardens: experience the fun of the Hong Kong Sevens outside of the stadium at the Lee Gardens area in the heart of Causeway Bay. From 24 March to 8 April, the festival will host events featuring visits by international rugby teams, rugby clinics, virtual reality game contests, Wolfpack Ninja Championship, and a mobile-app based treasure hunt with a chance to earn prizes.

Piracy in the South China Sea had always been a problem so it is no wonder that establishing a Marine Police Force was an early priority for the Hong Kong authorities. 中國南海的海盜問題一直十分嚴重，因此成立 水警是早期香港政府的首要事項。

ong Kong was ceded to the British after the first Opium War as a base for their traders. The trade was the movement of goods between East and West by ships.

Although ships at that time were armed, many merchantmen were still vulnerable to piracy and the value of their cargoes tempted the unscrupulous.

A l t h o u g h t h e “ Wa t e r P o l i c e ” w a s established early, it was not until 1846 that a sailing 'gun-boat' with a crew of 17 entered service. It was used for anti-piracy work until sadly lost with all hands in the typhoon of 1848. In 1847 the Unit had been expanded to approximately 40 men and two more boats were obtained. Each Constable in a six-man crew was armed with a pistol and a cutlass.

The acquisition of Kowloon in 1860 meant that the waters of the Harbour almost doubled in size and this led to an expansion of the Water Police. The number of boats also increased with routine patrols done in rowing galleys. In 1868 a large sailing junk was brought into service for anti-piracy patrols and this was joined by a steam gunboat between 1870 and 1872.

Piracy continued to be a problem well into the twentieth century. Pirate attacks even took place on police stations on outlying islands,

such as Cheung Chau in 1912. The robbing of ferries carrying valuable cargo was also a problem. To combat this, the bridge area of the ferry was caged and armed guards placed to prevent access. Leola Crawford in 1914 describes her trip from Hong Kong to Macau as follows:

We made the forty mile trip on the British river-boat “Heung-shan” in company with two other English steamers, since upon these piratical waters vessels must travel in small fleets, equipped to combat with the buccaneers who make this the most dangerous water route in the world. It was with a strange sensation that we stepped aboard this miniature war vessel bristling with guns and policed by armed Sikhs, who patrolled the barred hatchways. Threatening black cannons were lashed to the decks; rows of shining guns surrounded the pilot-house, while in the companionway and passages hung racks of short-range weapons for the use of passengers.

Despite the precautions a number of vessels were taken over by pirates. One serious case was that of the S.S.Sunning which was taken over by pirates on 15th November 1926. Two of the officers had secreted some weapons in their cabins and

雖然香港很早就有了水警，但直到1846年， 第一艘編制有17名船員的炮艇帆船才正式投入使 用，主要執行反海盜任務，可惜在1848年的一場 颱風中，全數船員不幸殉職。水警於 1847 年擴 展至約 40 人並獲得多兩艘船。每支小隊有 6 名警 員，每名船員均配備手槍及短彎刀 。

1860年英國取得九龍，港口水域面積近乎倍 增，船艇數目也隨著增加 ，人員以划艇方式來執 行巡邏職務。1868年，政府購入一艘大帆船作反 海盜巡邏之用。在1870至1872年間，一艘蒸氣炮 艇加入服務行列。海盜問題一直延續至20世紀， 有些海盜甚至在離島的警署肆虐，例如1912年的 海盜襲擊長洲警署事件。此外，更不斷有載有昂 貴貨物的渡輪遭到搶劫。為了解決這個問題，渡 輪的舷梯處被鎖起，並安排了武裝警衛以防止海 盜進入。 1914年，Leola Crawford 如此描述她 從香港到澳門的旅程：

were able to retake control of the bridge. In the ensuing battle for control the ship was set on fire and was badly damaged. Two passengers were killed and the chief engineer and a number of others were wounded. No wonder that most incidents happened without a shot being fired.

In December 1941 much of the fleet was scuttled to avoid it falling into the hands of the Japanese after the fall of Hong Kong. The Water Police Station in Tsim Sha Tsui served as the headquarters of the Japanese navy during the Japanese occupation of Hong Kong. After the end of the War the whole Police Force was completely re-organized and this had a major impact on the Water Police. Firstly the name was changed from 'Water Police' to 'Marine Police'.

By the early 1990s advances in vessel design and engine technology meant that the Region was now faced with different challenges compared with those of the past.

Smaller, faster vessels were increasingly seen being used for illegal activity, such as illegal immigration and smuggling. At this time smuggling syndicates turned away from using small recreational speedboats to using purpose-built high-powered smuggling craft fitted with multiple outboard engines

and capable of carrying large quantities of contraband up to the size of a private car.

These vessels became known as ‘Daai-Feis’.

To address the ‘Daai-Feis’ the AntiSmuggling Task Force was formed in 1992 and this saw close co-operation between the Police, Customs & Excise Department and the Royal Navy. In 1996 the Small Boat Unit and Anti-Smuggling Task Force were combined to form the Small Boat Division. The Region also strove to address the issue of the use of highpowered craft for smuggling via new legislation and this resulted in the introduction of a restriction on the number of and combined power of outboard engines that could be fitted to vessels. Also the Marine Police moved away from the use of large numbers of major sea going launches to the use of smaller faster craft.

The return of sovereignty to China in 1997 saw the implementation of the ‘One Country, Two Systems’ concept and this meant that the HKSAR retained its status as a free port and as a separate customs territory. This meant that the issue of smuggling remained.

Smuggling cars and illegal immigrants are no longer a problem and the likely items are cigarettes and drugs so the Marine Police are still kept busy. ■

Art Basel replaced Art Hong Kong, Hong Kong’s annual art fair held in the city since 2008. Though a relative newcomer to the international art scene, Art Hong Kong was a huge success, and in less than six years established itself as one of the top art events in Asia. A Hong Kong edition of Art Basel, which had already been collaborating with Art Hong Kong from its inception, took the title role in 2013, elevating the event to one of the most prestigious in the world. That Hong Kong is already the third-largest art auction market, after New York and London, helps to attract influential local and international galleries and artists to take part in the show. At Art Basel, collectors and art lovers can take in works ranging across painting, photography, sculpture, film and video, from geographically and culturally diverse origins. And the fact that Hong Kong levies no import or export tax on art transactions eliminates hassle and unpleasant surprises after making a purchase.

Some 250 galleries are expected to participate in seven show sectors. The seven sectors are: Galleries, the main section where galleries bring their top works; Discoveries, which represents emerging artists and galleries from all over the world; Insights, which showcases the works of galleries and their artists from the broader Asian market; Encounters, which features large scale sculpture and installation works throughout the exhibition halls; Kabinett, which highlights specially curated spaces in a variety of themes; Magazines where magazines from art publications around the world are displayed; and Film, a three-day programme by and about artists. In addition, there is "Conversations", a series of lectures and discussions by prominent members of the art community.

Local art scenes are also flourishing and local artists have established art colonies in several neighbourhoods across the city.

Prominent among them are Wong Chuk Hang near Aberdeen, on the south of Hong Kong Island, where a number of up-and-coming galleries are housed in converted factory buildings. The South Island Cultural District is hosting an art fair in March, concurrent with the other major art shows. Other interesting art neighbourhoods include Kwun Tong and Kwai Chung.

The factories are long gone but it remains a thriving and bustling trading place for fabrics and accessories of all types. Local wet market 街市 To see how the locals buy their daily fresh groceries, you must visit a local produce market. The wet market at Pei Ho Street is lined with stalls selling fresh vegetables, fruit, meat and fish. Shek Kip Mei Housing Estate 石硤尾邨 Just a ten-minute walk from Sham Shui Po is Hong Kong’s first public housing estate, built in the 1950s after an infamous fire that destroyed thousands of squatter huts on the hillside of Shek Kip Mei, leaving 53 thousand homeless. Today, one of the estate factory buildings has been converted into the Jockey Club Creative Arts Centre and Hong Kong’s last remaining Mark II H-Block type public housing building, Mei Ho House, is converted into a hostel, cited by UNESCO for its tangible and intangible value. antonese cuisine is generally considered the most refined of the many Chinese regional culinary traditions, and so most fine-dining Chinese restaurants serve Cantonese food. It is also said that Hong Kong collectively has the best Cantonese restaurants in the world. So, to stand out against such an august standard is no mean feat. Such is the case with Yee Tung Heen, the fine-dining Cantonese restaurant at the venerable Excelsior Hotel, long a favourite among its discerning local customer base.

The restaurant’s striking décor features a colourful bamboo design, and its floral partitioning can be used to create several private rooms out of the main dining hall. The elegantly decorated space is perfect for either a social dim sum lunch gathering or an intimate private dinner.

Over the years, Yee Tung Heen and its signature dishes have both won numerous awards, notably a One Michelin Star designation for 2018. Regardless, the restaurant’s reputation for serving exquisite Cantonese dishes is long established.

Our lunch was to be a real treat, as it featured several of the restaurant’s signature dishes. We started with the Twin Mushroom Platter (HK$248), which was new to us – we appreciate both its taste and presentation – an excellent opening indeed.

is roasted just nice and tender, and bites easily with a lingering sweet taste. The Doubled-boiled Superior Soup (HK$348/portion for ladies and HK$318/portion for gentlemen) was then served, each version using ingredients and herbs that bring specific health benefits to the ladies and gentlemen – we took it in our stride, knowing it was good for us.

We were now into the heart of this sumptuous meal. The Steamed and Sautéed Egg with Crab Meat, Sea Urchin and Mini Gold Fish Dumplings (HK$388) is a real delicacy, and the mixture of crab meat and sea urchin makes for an innovative savoury sensation. Braised Wagyu Beef Rib with Sesame and Onion in Beef Jus (HK$528) was next, a richly flavoured and succulent beef rib that bites easily, and consumed all too quickly.

Sautéed Baby Cabbage with Dried Sakura Shrimps and Peas (HK$198) and Braised Rice with Scallops, Crab Meat and Spring Onion (HK$298) rounded out the meal. The lighter and fresher vegetable and rice dishes balanced out the meal nicely.

We completed the meal with Supreme Red Bean Soup ($98 per person), another classic Cantonese favourite and the Black and White Sesame Rolls ($58) which is another house creation that left us begging for more.

An exquisite Cantonese meal should be high on any Hong Kong visitor’s itinerary. Yee Tung Heen is undoubtedly among the top choices – book early.■

ith over 11,000 restaurants in the city, all vying for our patronage, it’s easy to miss the hidden gems – those quality dining outlets offering interesting and creative menus driven by passionate chefs and restaurateurs.

Such is the case with Circa 1913, a cosy, artsy restaurant serving imaginative French/Japanese fare.

We tasted what amounts to a “molecular t a s t i n g m e n u ” – s m a l l e r s i z e , i n t e re s t i n g concoctions by the chef, arriving in a carefully planned sequence. For our meal, we sampled two versions of the tasting menus: a Short Menu (HK$880 per person), consisting of eight items, and a Long Menu (HK$1,280 per person), which has 12 items – a lot, to be sure.

Located on the first floor of the Fringe Club, a Grade 1 heritage building in Central, just up from Lan Kwai Fong, the restaurant is decked out in the building’s original dark-hued floors, walls and windows, which are kept for conservation purposes. The original décor is complemented by more contemporary light wood furniture and retro-style glass globes and a chandelier, which make for a nice contrast. Several of the Fringe Club’s bright impressionistic paintings help lighten up the ambience.

The entrees served include La Calmer (squid, black garlic miso emulsion), Carpaccio de Saint Joseph (Hokkaido scallops, kaki), Le Tartare (Kumamoto A5 Waou beef tartare, 63°C quail egg), Tomate Momotaro (Momotaro tomato, black sesame pesto), and for the short menu, the very tasty Le Homarde oeuf cuit á la vapeur (lobster, steamed egg).

Circa 1913 has space for 36 guests seated and nine at the bar; there are Happy Hour drinks on weekdays, including some refreshing cocktails that we can vouch for. A professional DJ plays progressively livelier music in the evenings. Given its tucked-away location, and relaxed setting for both drinking and dining, it is tempting to see it as a rather elegant speakeasy.

Still the food is what we came for, and is worth the visit on its own merits.

The cooking style caught our attention.

It’s a French/Japanese combo, for sure, but fusion doesn’t quite describe it. The style is probably best described as mostly French, with a generous cross-over of ingredients between French and Japanese. The end result is a treat: creative items lovingly and meticulously prepared – tasty, but not heavy, all appetising, and filling too.

For the long menu, Foie Gras/Waou Beef Gyoza, Daikon Soup is served, followed by Risotto aux Oursins (Hokkaido uni, tomato, risotto). For the fish, it’s Kinmedai, Shiraki , Zucchini. The final meat dish is the excellent La Boeuf de Kumamoto, accompanied by a choice of Kumamoto Waou Sirloin or Tenderloin.

We were getting rather full by now, and thankfully the desserts came, including a Citrus Sorbet and Sous Vide Wakayama Persimmon with Konnyaku, followed by Petite Fours.

Whether you opt for the short or long menu, the dishes are uniformly excellent. We are truly impressed with the quality of ingredients used, not to mention the delightful mixing of interesting Japanese and French ingredients, creatively presented.

If you are in the mood for an eye-opening meal in an intimate setting, step back in time to Circa 1913 – it’s a rewarding treat for all the senses.■

J’s Bar Bistro

J ’ s Bar Bistro, the recently opened high-street bar and bistro concept outlet at the popular Royal Garden Hotel, is the latest welcome addition to the city’s vibrant culinary scene. The restaurant’s grand European-style décor is accented with a subtle navy blue, wooden floor, marble chairs and period piece tables. It also features a long marble-top bar, gentlemen’s and ladies’ corners, a wine cellar, a cheese counter, plus live singing and DJ music in the evenings.

J’s Bar Bistro serves a variety of light menu items including tapas, yakitori and specialty cheeses. Coupled with its buy-one-getone-free Happy Hour offering, the bistro manages to offer an ideal setting for good food, nice drinks and relaxed ambience.

PAPI, a popular Italian restaurant operated by veteran local restaurateur Benjamin Lung, has reopened in Fashion Walk ’ s famous Food Street, to the delight of its many foodie followers. Occupying two airy floors, the restaurant is decorated in a sleek and contemporary style, with eye-catching geometric shapes and loud colours serving as backdrop to a spacious setting.

PAPI offers a wide range of home-style Italian dishes ideal for sharing, including a menu of 15 cicchetti (small dishes), Tuscany traditional style pizza, fresh hand-made zesty pastas, and a range of meat and seafood main courses prefect for sharing.

For our meal, we were treated to a wide selection of dishes, all of which are delicious and appetising. Our cicchetti dishes included the Sautéed Mediterranean Octopus with paprika ($108), Sautéed Baby Spinach Garlic Potatoes ($88), and the zesty Florentine Stewed Beef Tripe ($118). Our pizza selection was a rich and flavourful Pizza with Tuscan Lardo Fat, Asparagus, Honey & Black Pepper ($178) – unusual, but delightfully tasty. Our pasta selection was Pici Di Papi, Home-made Tuscan Pici with Tomato sauce & Garlic Chips ($138). And for the main, we had the mouthwatering Roasted Italian Style Sucking Pig, with Braised Cabbage & Apple with Fig Sauce ($358). A Dessert Platter, comprising a trio of Tiramisu, Mixed Berries, Panna Cotta Gelato ($178), rounded off our delightful meal.

PAPI is perfect for a gathering of friends or family sharing a relaxed appetising meal. Be sure to book early.

Cull ’N Pistol

One of Hong Kong’ s hidden gems is the waterfront promenade in the east of Hong Kong Island, extending from Sai Wan Ho to Quarry Bay. The 1.5-kilometre promenade offers an expansive view of Victoria Harbour and the space to stretch your legs. Dubbed Soho East, a number of restaurants and bars line the Sai Wan Ho part of the promenade, offering both a wide choice of food and a shimmering waterfront view. One of the more popular outlets is Cull ’ N Pistol, a bar and restaurant serving popular New England–style seafood, featuring quality ingredients and authentic cooking methods.

For the winter promotion, Cull ’N Pistol is offering its New England Seafood Hotpot ($398 for 2 persons). Ingredients for the hotpot include fresh prawns, mussels and clams, fresh handmade black pepper prawn balls, fish balls and pork balls, Angus beef slices plus green vegetable, mushroom, Korean rice cake, Shirataki noodle, and sweetcorn. You can order add-ons including its signature Hokkaido scallops ($78 for 6 slices), freshly shucked oysters, and whole Canadian lobster tail ($118). And how better to enjoy the seafood chow than with either Champagne (Veuve Clicquot Yellow Label, $580) or a 2-litre 1664 Kronenbourg Beer Tower ($368).

This place is a fabulous option for a relaxing lunch or dinner amidst an iconic setting.

he astonishing rise of Macau’s culinary reputation in the last decade or so, evidenced by the number of award-winning restaurants, including the coveted Michelinstarred designation, has been welcome news to the large foodie community in Hong Kong.

One such restaurant garnering coveted awards, including a one-Michelin Star accolade, is Ying, a fine-dining Cantonese restaurant located in the Altira Hotel complex in Taipa, Macau.

We rounded off the meal with Braised Tomato with Mushroom and Vegetable ($48 per person) and Fried Rice in Lotus Leaf ($168), with both dishes fine renditions of traditional Cantonese cooking.

Headed by Chef Li Mingang, Ying serves tried-and-true authentic traditional Cantonese dishes as well as some with a more contemporary interpretation, all using the finest ingredients. Its impeccable, attentive service is in keeping with its elegant décor – a contemporary Chinese design using rich, luxuriant colours.

The restaurant also offers several private rooms with spectacular views for private functions and a large well-stocked wine cellar with its own tasting room.

We were served an exquisite meal that befitted the fine setting, with several signature dishes highlighted. The Cherry Wood Honey Glaze Iberico Pork ($188) is easily one of the tastiest Char Siu we’ve ever had, the pork morsels practically melting in the mouth.

Double-boiled Fish Maw with Sea Conch and Fresh Fruit ($268), which came next, is equally flavourful, with a generous portion of the highly prized fish maw served.

Two seafood dishes followed: the Pan-fried Mantis Shrimp with Cream ($388) is crispyfried but the meat remains sweet and tender; the Traditional Steamed Spot Grouper ($1680), which we would argue is best prepared steamed, just as Ying has done it, absolutely knocks it out of the park – succulent, tender meat that tastes so fresh, accented nicely by its accompanying ingredients of wood-ear fungus.

‘Diary of a Pioneer’ by Liang Ban at de Sarthe Gallery 27 Jan-17 Mar. The exhibition questions a conventional understanding of culture in which civilization and nature are diametrically opposed. With surrealist and humorous undertones, Liang Ban argues our idealized notion of a civilization constantly in progress dilutes a more complicated reality in which our relationship to nature and wilderness are closely connected. ‘Rehumanised’ by Clare Woods at Simon Lee Gallery 9 Feb–17 Mar. For over 15 years Woods’ painting practice has been an exploration of physical form through the materiality of paint. Originally trained as a sculptor, Woods established her reputation with largescale landscape paintings rendered in enamel on aluminium. Based on photographic source images, her immersive paintings of diverse scale have more recently moved into figurative works rendered in rich hues of oil paint. With an acute understanding of sculptural language, Woods’ interpretations shift between figuration and abstraction imbuing this central tension with volume, weight and interior mystery.

‘The Poetry of Colors’ by Philippe Caretti at Oi Ling Antiques 22 Mar-22 Apr. The Poetry of Colors, the inaugural collection of paintings by Asia-based Swiss artist Philippe Caretti, is reminiscent of the action painting, or gestural abstraction, of the mid-20th century.

But one of the collection’s distinctive element is Caretti’s unique and unusual choice of tools: syringes. The paint is first drawn into the syringe, and afterwards, skillfully expelled to form the envisaged lines, swirls, dots, blotches, or patterns. To the artist, the unpredictability of mishaps in the process of artistic creation resembles the uncontrollable in one’s life, and the challenge of creating something from those unpredictable moments is an invigorating and eye-sharpening process.

Hong Kong Heritage Museum

Porcelain and Painting 9 Feb–19 Nov 2018 Chao Shao-an and Yang Shanshen settled in Hong Kong in the 1940s. They often met together in the Lingnan Art Studio, and they have spent their leisure and created joint paintings. When they made friends with the owner of the Yuet Tung China Works, Tso Wing Shui, they tried their hands at painting on porcelain using their own artistic style.

This exhibition features their joint works on paper and on porcelain, selected from private collections which remain little known. Visitors will see how the two masters carried out their artistic dialogue in these works, and how they brought their own signature style from works on paper into works on porcelain. We spoke to Claus Pedersen, General Manager of the InterContinental Hong Kong, about his career and experience in the hospitality industry 香港洲際酒店總經理 Claus Pedersen 與我們暢談他的職業生涯以及 他在酒店業的經歷。 I started my hotel career in Denmark, where I grew up. I always wanted to pursue an international career, and the hospitality industry allows me to work all over the world, which I did, with postings in Dublin, Kuala Lumpur, Cairo, Valencia in Venezuela and London. Then I moved to Asia and have worked for many years in Japan, followed by Hong Kong and Macau.

I became GM of InterContinental Hong Kong in 2016, after previously working her for six years (2005-11), before spending five years with MGM Macau. All in all, it’s been over 26 years, working on multiple continents.

The Intercontinental Hotel is clearly a landmark hotel in Hong Kong. I am so proud to be its GM. You could say I am the captain of the ship or conductor of the orchestra – leading, guiding, directing and orchestrating a large team of over 700 employees. Our strategic mission is to create a “Great Hotel Guest Love” and to deliver “True Hospitality”.

The exciting part of managing this hotel is that we are currently planning for a major hotel renovation which will commence next year. It will rejuvenate the hotel from top to bottom including the restaurants, lobby and event spaces.

When it’s completed we aim to be not only one of the top hotels in Hong Kong, but also one of the top hotels globally.

What makes the Intercontinental so unique is our unparalleled harbourfront location, which offers on-the-edge spectacular panoramic views of Victoria Harbour. We also have the largest President Suite in the city (almost 7000 square feet), and we have several exceptional award-winning restaurants, which makes it a destination for incredible dining. And all of this is backed up by 700 professional, dedicated staff – that’s why our guests keep coming back, time and time again!

My favourite part of the job is its variety. No two days are ever the same; and there are new challenges every day. I love working closely with my team – on everything from daily operations and upcoming promotions to the planning of our major hotel renovations.

Hong Kong offers visitors the best of East and West, old and new, many of which co-exists alongside each other (skyscrapers, glitzy malls next to old buildings, Chinese temples or dai pai dong stalls). The city is fast and efficient and extremely safe. The infrastructure makes it easy to navigate, and to connect with other destinations in the region.

For visitors, I recommend: Must Eat – an authentic dim sum lunch. Our 2-Michelin star Yan Toh Heen offers some of the most sublime dim sum you will ever have.

Must Buy – something jade. In Chinese culture, jade is a symbol of goodness and beauty. The Jade Market in Kowloon on Kansu Street is just a short taxi ride away and offers all kind of jade souvenirs from trinkets and necklaces to bowls and chopsticks.

Must See – take a stroll along Hollywood Road, which is lined with antique shops, art galleries and trendy bars and restaurants. I suggest starting from the Western end (around 100 Hollywood Road) going towards Central. There are also temples, street markets, and a local produce market along the way for you to visit.
