Mary Ann Young Center In-Person Programming Returns With the easing of restrictions on indoor gatherings, the Mary Ann Young Center is able to bring back some inperson activities. Limited in person programming started on January 19. Check this issue of the MAYCConnect for classes and activities that will be offered and the safety protocols that are in place. Programs will include fitness classes, tax preparation help, and more. We know that many are not ready to return for in person programming. To try to offer everyone the opportunity to connect, virtual programs will also continue until further notice. We look forward to continuing to connect with you virtually, by phone, or now in person. Please note that these activities are limited in size and a reservation is necessary. A face mask must be worn at all times while in the MAYC. The City of Blaine will continue to follow all State of Minnesota guidelines for in person programming and program offerings are subject to change.

February is American Heart Month The federally designated event reinforces the importance of heart health and the need for more research, with a reminder to get families, friends and communities involved. It is a tradition that is over half a century strong. Cardiovascular disease (heart disease and stroke combined) kills about 2,300 a day. Consider the facts: • Heart disease kills more people than all forms of cancer combined. • Heart attacks affect more people every year than the entire population of Hennepin County. • 83 percent believe that heart attacks can be prevented but are not motivated to do anything. • 72 percent of Americans do not consider themselves at risk for heart disease. The good news is that heart disease is preventable in most cases with healthy choices, which include not smoking, maintaining a healthy weight, controlling blood sugar and cholesterol, treating high blood pressure, getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity physical activity a week and getting regular checkups. For more information on heart health go to Heart.org.

Pack the Bus

Curbside Food Drive, Thursday, January 28, 12:30-2:30pm Local food shelves are seeing increased demand and we want to help. Help us to fill the MAYC bus with food donations. Wear a mask, drop off your donations curbside at the MAYC, and help those in need during this cold winter season.

Yabba-Dabba-Do: The Fantastic World of Hanna-Barbera February 18, 7pm Have a yabba-dabba-do time with Fred and Barney, Scooby-Doo, Yogi Bear, and all your other favorite cartoon characters as Movie Man Eric Houston takes you on a journey through the career of TV animation pioneers William Hanna and Joseph Barbera. You will see how the duo started out making the Tom and Jerry cartoons, revolutionized animation by bringing it to prime-time television with the Flintstones, and continued on to create dozens of beloved characters. You do not want to miss this chance to relive Saturday morning all over again. To watch live on YouTube, visit BlaineMN.gov/MovieManEric.

Income Tax Assistance The Mary Ann Young Center has partnered with AARP and the IRS to offer income tax assistance to Anoka County residents with low to moderate income. If you are in need of assistance to complete your income taxes, starting on February 2 you can call the MAYC at 763-786-9375 to register for an appointment. Once you have made a reservation, you will need to pick up a packet located in a box outside the south central door #2 between the hours of 9AM-4PM Monday – Friday. The packet must be completed in its entirety and brought to your scheduled appointment. This year, the service will entail scanning your tax documents, which will be returned immediately to you. Your taxes will be prepared virtually. One week later, you will return to sign and pick up your completed return. Additional details and safety precautions will be given when you schedule your appointment with MAYC staff.
