In Person Dining Returning Soon Target Date, Wednesday, September 1 With the hiring of a new food service worker, Volunteers of America is gearing up to resume in person dining at the Mary Ann Young Center. Next time you stop by please introduce yourself to the new VOA Food Service Worker, John Grant. John resides in Lino Lakes with his wife Denae, four children, and several pets. Welcome to the MAYC kitchen, John. When in person meals resume please register by noon at least three business days in advance. Registration is limited so be sure to call your order in early. Meal cost remains at a suggested $4 per person age 60+. Meals will be served at 11:45AM in the Tom Ryan A room. Those who wish to continue to pick up curbside meals will need to indicate that to staff at time of registration and arrive between 12-12:30PM to pick up your order.

Bus Service is Back Transportation is now available Monday thru Friday to bring people to and from the Mary Ann Young Center for programs. Service times have changed, so confirm pick-up times when you register for a ride. Cost is $1.50 round trip for Blaine residents. Returning drivers are Bruce Helmke, Dennis Lund, Patty Sandin, and Rob Tomassoni. New driver this year is Jan Morse. Please thank these drivers when you see them for the important volunteer service being provided. If you are interested in being a volunteer driver, contact staff at the MAYC at 763-786-9375. It is a great way to give back to the community.

Soil and Sunshine Garden Club Monday, September 13, 6:30pm The club was started on February 8, 1954, with 15 charter members who met in people’s homes. By 1990, the club had grown to a point where they started meeting at the Mary Ann Young Senior Center. There are now many Master Gardeners among the ranks and membership has grown to over 50 people. September through May on the second Monday of the month, speakers are invited to present interesting and informative programs that focus mainly on horticulture with the exception of the Christmas potluck. May marks the annual plant sale. During the summer months, members tour a variety of locations. If you are interested in joining, call to register at 763-786-9375. Fall Colors Train Ride Thursday, October 14, 9:45am-3:15pm There is still room to register for this beautiful, scenic 90-minute train ride through the St. Croix Valley. Price includes bus transportation and lunch. Registration deadline is September 30, no refunds after this date. Trip is subject to change. Fee $70. Bentleyville and Canal Park Brewing Tuesday, November 30, 12:15-9:30pm, $42 or $57 Begin the afternoon with a stop at Canal Park Brewing Company where food and drinks will be on your own. Add a tour tasting for $15, which includes a 30-minute tour and sampling of 3 beers of your choice. Next stop - Bentleyville! Billed as America’s largest free walkthrough lighting display, Bentleyville invites guests to stroll under the glow of over 5 million lights in a 20acre park situated on the shores of Lake Superior, while enjoying complimentary hot cocoa, cookies, popcorn, and roasted marshmallows. Dress accordingly for the great outdoors, expect a good amount of walking, and plan to take photos. Registration is limited so sign up early. Blaine Trailblazers Walking Group
Senior Companion Meetings,
Mondays at 9am, Meet outside MAYC entrance Get fit and stay healthy by walking scenic local trails. Expect a walking distance of 1.5-3 miles. Log your miles and report significant milestones, such as 10, 20, and 30 miles, to MAYC staff. Incentive prizes will be awarded throughout the year. Let staff know if you are meeting at the designated park at 9:15AM. Call Beverly at 763-571-7502 for details. August locations: 2 - Lochness Park 9 - Pioneer Park 16 - Pleasure Creek 23 - Silver View in Mounds View 30 - Northwood/Oak Creek Parks Pinochle - Single Deck, Mondays, 1pm Ropes, aces, queen of spades, jack of diamonds are all desirable combinations in this fun card game. Join other pinochle card players on Monday afternoons. Some experience necessary.
Specified Wednesdays each month Lutheran Social Services will resume meetings for senior companions currently serving Anoka County. The meetings will be divided into two sessions each month to allow for adequate social distancing. At this time, wearing a mask is required for this program. Bridge, Thursdays, 9:30am
500 Cards, Tuesdays, 1pm Trump, no trump, bids, and strategy are the name of the game in this technical card game. Players draw a table number upon entering the building and head to the match table. Cost is $1 per person with payback prizes awarded at end of play. Experienced players only.
Hand and Foot, Wednesdays, 1pm This canasta-style card game can successfully be played with two, three, four, or six players and consists of runs, clean books, dirty books, wild cards, and melds. It is easy to learn and players will help guide you through the game. Simple instruction sheets are on hand as well.
Mah Jongg, Wednesdays, 1pm A tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China, players use the instruction booklet to make specific combinations. It is commonly played with three or four players. Game cases not provided. Each year new combinations are available to keep the game interesting and challenging.
Bridge, Thursdays, 9:30am Noted as an intellectual card game which changes and progresses the more you play. Bidding, communicating, and strategizing play with your partner are key elements. Previous experience required.
Minnesota Woodcarver's Association Mtg, Second Sunday of each month The North Metro chapter invites you to attend meetings held September through April on the second Sundays of the month. Hear great tips on new carving techniques, stay in the know about coming events, and plan and discuss events for the future. No experience necessary, just a genuine interest in the art of carving.

Flu Shot Clinic Tuesday, September 28, 9-11:30am Registration has begun for an appointment to receive a flu shot by our local Walgreens pharmacist. Appointments are available in 15-minute increments. Most insurance companies cover the cost of the shot. Bring your Medicare and supplemental insurance cards to your appointment. Also available upon advanced request will be shingles and pneumonia shots.

Landmark Tours Travel Show
The Anoka County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program will offer limited appointments by phone. Senior citizens and people with disabilities who qualify for a Minnesota property tax refund will be able to book an appointment. Volunteer tax preparers will answer your property tax questions and assist you in filling out your M1PR form, which you will then mail to the MN Department of Revenue.
