Congregate Dining is Back Registration Limited to 50 People Staff at the Mary Ann Young Center welcome people to register for meals at least three business days in advance to dine in person once again. Basket Making Class
Senior Companion Meetings,
2nd and 4th Mondays beginning September 13, 10am-12pm Join instructor Frances Shirley as she teaches the art of basket making. These lovely baskets will look great in your home or as a gift to a friend. Basket prices vary from session to session, but will generally range from $11-$16 for material and instruction. Tools will be available for use while at the MAYC. Class is limited to 10 people.
Specified Wednesdays each month Lutheran Social Services has resumed meetings for senior companions currently serving Anoka County. At this time, wearing a mask is required for this program. Contact Terry Hollingsworth with any questions at 612-817-5521.
Blaine Trailblazers Walking Group Mondays at 9am, Meet outside MAYC entrance Get fit and stay healthy by walking scenic local trails. Expect a walking distance of 1.5-3 miles. Log your miles and report significant milestones, such as 10, 20, and 30 miles, to MAYC staff. Incentive prizes will be awarded throughout the year. September locations: 13 - Kane Meadows 20 - Lakes of Radisson 27 - Lochness Park Ropes, aces, queen of spades, jack of diamonds are all desirable combinations in this fun card game. Join other pinochle card players on Monday afternoons. Some experience necessary.
500 Cards, Tuesdays, 1pm
Evening Woodcarving Group, Tuesdays, 7-9pm Looking to learn or expand the art of carving? This may be just the group for you. Tips and assistance are available by seasoned carvers to get a beginner started or to those seeking pointers on their current project. Come to share your projects in a relaxed, friendly environment among folks with a common interest. Register in advance to attend and enter through the west door.
Hand and Foot, Wednesdays, 1pm This canasta-style card game can successfully be played with two, three, four, or six players and consists of runs, clean books, dirty books, wild cards, and melds. It is easy to learn and players will help guide you through the game. Simple instruction sheets are on hand as well.
September 23, 1-3pm The North Country Jamboree would like to invite all musicians and vocalists to share their skills at a fun musical show! All varieties of instruments are welcome in addition to singers. This is not a contest. Rather, it is an afternoon of offering the audience a mixture of music, which is sure to be enjoyed by all attending. Please call the MAYC to sign up as a group or individual to perform at 763-786-9375. Between performances, the Jamboree will play a few songs to round out the show. Noted as an intellectual card game which changes and progresses the more you play. Bidding, communicating, and strategizing play with your partner are key elements. Previous experience required.
Pinochle - Single Deck, Mondays, 1pm
Trump, no trump, bids, and strategy are the name of the game in this technical card game. Players draw a table number upon entering the building and head to the match table. Cost is $1 per person with payback prizes awarded at end of play. Experienced players only.
Musical Talent Show
Bridge, Thursdays, 9:30am
Mah Jongg, Wednesdays, 1pm A tile-based game developed in the 19th century in China, players use the instruction booklet to make specific combinations. It is commonly played with three or four players. Game cases not provided. Each year new combinations are available to keep the game interesting and challenging.
Woodcarving Tuesdays, 7-9pm
Minnesota Woodcarver's Association Mtg, Second Sunday of each month The North Metro chapter invites you to attend meetings held September through April on the second Sunday of the month. Hear great tips on new carving techniques, stay in the know about coming events, and plan and discuss events for the future. No experience necessary, just a genuine interest in the art of carving.
Wii Nintendo Bowl, Tuesdays, 9am or 10am Beginning September 14, bowling league will start. Leagues are eight-week sessions in the fall, winter, and spring. Participants can register for a seasonal league or for all three. This fun game is played with a hand held controller using a large screen TV. Up to eight participants may register per time slot. Fee is $3 per person and payback prize money will be distributed following the eight-week session. No experience necessary. Staff and participants are on hand to teach. It is surprising how much exercise one gets playing this game in addition to the comradery among opponents. Join today. Movie of the Month News of the World, Thursday, September 9, 1-3pm Tom Hanks stars as Kyle Kidd, a widower and veteran of three wars who now moves from town to town as a non-fiction storyteller sharing the adventures of presidents, queens, feuds and catastrophes. On his journey, he crosses paths with a 10-year-old girl taken by the Kiowa tribe six years earlier. Hostile to a world she’s never experienced, Johanna is being returned to her aunt and uncle by Kidd against her will. Building Supervisor Position The City of Blaine is hiring building supervisors for evening and weekend rentals. The potential start date is October 1, 2021. Days and hours are flexible with a minimum of three hours per shift. Salary is $15 per hour. Home Movie Transfer
Blaine residents can drop off VHS tapes, 8mm and 16mm film reels, or slides of personal home movies/photos at MAYC. North Metro TV will transfer the content to a DVD and return everything to MAYC for pickup about one month later. See dates on the calendar. Phone: 763-786-9375
Mark your calendars for our annual jewelry sale. Over the past year, volunteers have been busy sorting, pricing, cleaning, and preparing jewelry for shoppers. A multitude of jewelry has been generously donated from the community. Items are priced to sell. This will be the first sale in the new building so expect a roomier layout of items.
