Honor the Ladies Luncheon Wednesday, May 4, 11am-1pm Everyone is invited to register to join us as we honor and thank women this month. Entertainment will kick off the event at 11AM by the ever-popular smooth crooner sounds of Monroe Wright III. Enjoy a delicious meal of Chicken cordon bleu, orzo florentine, green beans, fresh fruit, and french silk pie served at noon. Door prizes will be randomly drawn and awarded to ladies in the crowd. Cost for the meal and entertainment is just $5 per person. Staff ask that during the entertainment, conversation is kept to a minimum to allow all to hear and enjoy the music. Thank you for your consideration.

Celebrate Older Americans Month

Tuesday, May 17, 11am-1pm Established in 1963, Older Americans Month recognizes the contributions of older adults across the nation. While raising families and building careers, older Americans also gave back to their communities in a variety of ways. Their time, experience, and talents enrich the lives of those around them. To celebrate those turning 80 or better, all are invited to register to attend a luncheon on May 17 featuring a menu of: beef stew w/broccoli, white rice, fresh fruit, sliced bread, and a sugar cookie. The event will feature entertainment by pianist, Nellie Spexet. Nellie has been volunteering her entertainment skills for many years and plays the piano beautifully. The cost for this event is $5 per person. Those who are age 80 or more will be eligible for door prizes drawings. Hope you can join us! There are several free virtual programs on zoom during the month of May to celebrate Older Americans Month held on Thursdays from 10-11AM that you are welcome to take advantage of. Upcoming Outings and Tours

Minnetonka Boat Cruise Monday, June 20 10am - 4pm, $59 Enjoy boating but don’t get the chance to anymore? Here is a great opportunity for you. A motorcoach leaving from the Mary Ann Young Center will transport registrants to the boat landing for Al and Alma’s Lunch Cruise. The first dinner cruise from Al and Alma's took place in 1973, after the supper club started back in 1956. Enjoy a 1½ hour narrated cruise on beautiful Lake Minnetonka. Lunch will be provided on the cruise and consists of a sandwich, salad, chips, dessert bar or cookie, coffee, or water. Cash bar is open to purchase other beverages. Following the cruise, we will load the bus and head to Honey and Mackie’s ice cream shop in Plymouth. Ice cream is on your own. This popular day trip will likely sell out quickly so don’t delay, register today. The boat is not handicapped accessible, but crew will assist people to board the steps. Trip goes rain or shine so dress for the weather. Price includes transportation, boat cruise, and lunch. Masks are required on the bus at this time. Registration deadline is May 6. No refunds thereafter.

Twins Game Wednesday, July 13 10:45am - 4:30pm, $62 Don your red, white, and blue attire and come out and cheer on our boys of summer, as the Minnesota Twins take on the Milwaukee Brewers. Seats are in section 203, along the first base line. Some accessible seats available, please let us know if you need to reserve an accessible seat. The plan is to arrive around 11:15AM for the noon game, so you'll have some time to explore before the game begins. Fee includes transportation and game ticket. Please register by June 28. Program Spotlights Blaine Trailblazers Walking Club Mondays, May - October, 9am, Designated Park Strengthen your physical endurance and develop camaraderie as you walk with others while enjoying nature on local trails. New this year is a consistent pattern so that participants will know for the entire season what trail will be designated.

1st Monday of the Month - Kane Meadows 2nd Monday - Lochness Park 3rd Monday - Pioneer Park 4th Monday - Pleasure Creek Park 5th Monday - Silver View Park (when applicable, except for on holidays) Trails are approximately 1.5-3 miles in length. Wear comfortable clothing, good walking shoes and dress for the weather. Maps are available upon request at the Mary Ann Young Center (MAYC). Blaine Bicycle Club for 50+ Wednesdays, 10am Check out this new club! If you like to bicycle and want to ride with others and form new friendships while enjoying trails you may not have ridden, then this is the group for you. The BBC plans to schedule rides on Wednesdays from April 13 – October 21. Ride each week or choose the dates that work for you. Community rides vary from 10-16 miles round trip at a leisurely pace of 8-10 mph and will take place around Blaine, Coon Rapids, Fridley, Ham Lake, and Andover, to begin with. If you are also looking to ride in other locations, visit the MN Spokes-N-Folks website at, MNSpokesNFolks.com for their evening extended ride schedule. Possible extended/overnight trips may be an additional opportunity for the BBC. A volunteer leader is needed each week to host a ride. Call Deb or Larry for leader details, which are minimal, and the starting location for each ride. Upcoming trail schedule:

Wearing a helmet is required. Headlights, taillights, and reflectors are suggested. Some outings may include stopping at a local eatery midway through the ride. The remaining 2022 schedule will be available at the MAYC and posted on the website as rides and leaders are confirmed. New! Bean Bags/Corn Hole Thursdays, 9am-12pm Join others in a friendly game of bean bags on Thursday mornings from May 5-September 22. All skill levels are welcome. Bean bags, boards, and scoring sticks will be provided by the Blaine Parks and Recreation Department. If weather conditions permit, it will be played in the south walkway or on the north patio. Mini tournaments may be established during the summer months pending registration. Get some fresh air and exercise among people with similar interests. Creative Corner Thursdays, 2-4pm Creative Corner has been active for almost a year. Participants have included painters, drawers, knitters, woodcarvers, and curiosity seekers. The best part of gathering at MAYC, other than seeing smiling faces, is to work in a large bright area with a sink and tables with plenty of elbow room. It’s wonderful to have a consistent place to develop and practice skills. Volunteer, Nancy Larson, is present each week with her own creative brain humming. Nancy is a former K-12 art teacher, as well as a watercolor teacher at the Maple Grove Art Center. She is available for guidance and assistance if needed. Advanced registration is required. Ann Genosky Celebrates 35 Years Ann Genosky celebrated 35 years of dedicated service with the City of Blaine on April 7. Ann graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree from St. Cloud State University with a major in Health Education and minor in Gerontology. When asked what she likes best about her job, she replied,

"I've met so many great people. Every day I laugh while at my job. Every day is different." Thank you for your service and dedication Ann!

Putting Course Victory Links Tournament Greens, Specified Tuesdays, 10am-12pm MAYC has partnered on a new program with Victory Links to provide half price putting on their immaculate 18 hole putting greens. Bring your own putter and golf balls or borrow from the facility at no charge. All skill levels are welcome. Practice your putting, which many tote is the most important part of the game, on this beautiful bent grass green course. Cost is just $4 per person on the second and fourth Tuesdays of the month beginning May 10 and ending September 27. Course not available on July 12. Enter off 105th Avenue near the National Sports Center (look for signage) and follow the road to the course. Check in at the adjoining building upon arrival. Tell your friends and neighbors! Senior Scam Prevention Educational Session, Wednesday, May 11, 10-11am Learn what scammers are doing to steal your money! Led by Travis Hale, Blaine Police Patrol Officer and sponsored by Nathaniel Loge from Edward Jones of Blaine, this highly informative session will be sure to equip you with the knowledge to recognize, protect yourself from, and report scams. Hear about the financial impact of and different types of scams including government/utility, computer, sweepstakes, phishing email and text messages, unemployment benefits, contractor scams and more. This information could save you thousands of dollars. Advanced registration is required.

Stroke Awareness May is Stroke Awareness Month May is stroke awareness month. Did you know that stroke affects every age, not just seniors. Every 40 seconds someone in the U.S. has a stroke. It is the number one cause of adult disability. Eighty percent of strokes can be prevented. Act FAST at the first sign of stroke: F - Facial Weakness A - Arm Weakness S - Speech Difficulty T - Time loss is brain loss Always call 911 if you or someone you know is showing signs of a stroke. If you need assistance such as support, resources, and information, do not hesitate to call the Minnesota Stroke Association at 763-553-0088.

Mid-MN Legal Aid - First Tuesday of the Month, 11am-1pm Need assistance with a legal issue? Looking for direction on completing a will? Mid-Minnesota Legal Aid can you help you get started to find answers to your legal questions. Appointments are required at least 72 hours in advance. Legal Aid will complete the appointment over the phone. You must be an Anoka County resident to qualify for this free service. Summer dates: May 3, June 7, July 5, August 2, September 6. Property Tax and Rent Credit Assistance The Anoka County Commissioners in conjunction with the Anoka County Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) are working together to plan out the details on how assistance might be offered this summer.
