Honor the Men Luncheon, Thursday, June 16, 11am-1pm Roll out the foot-stomping polka music by Dick Szyplinski for this fun day of honoring the men for Father’s Day. Lunch is $5 per person and will be a delightful menu of salisbury steak, mashed potatoes with gravy, glazed carrots, salad, a dinner roll, and white cake with chocolate frosting . Men will be eligible for random door prize drawings. Be sure to register in advance. Hope you can make it!

Birthday Party, Wednesday, June 29, 11am-1pm Entertainment by the talented Kent Appeldoorn will kick off the event at 11AM. The entertainment will be followed by a delicious noon meal of beef pot roast, mashed potatoes, gravy, vegetable, a dinner roll, and cake. All are invited to come and celebrate the birthday guests. Cost is $5 payable the day of the event, but please register in advance. Prize bingo starts at 1PM.

Enjoy Special Events in June

Annual Pork Chop Dinner Is Back Thursday, July 28, 5-7:30pm Back by popular demand after two years of COVID restrictions, registration begins at 9AM on Wednesday, June 15. This lovely homemade meal includes a seasoned grilled pork chop, potato salad, pasta salad, fresh vegetables and dip, baked beans, watermelon, a deluxe brownie, and more. The cost is $8.50 per person payable at time of registration. Following dinner, the community is welcome to enjoy light and lively music by the Fridley Old Time Band as they perform on the north patio (inside if weather is rainy). Bring a lawn chair and enjoy the show! Starting on June 15 get registered by calling 763-786-9375.

Upcoming Outings and Tours Twins Game Wednesday, July 13 10:45am - 4:30pm, $62 Don your red, white, and blue attire and come out and cheer on the Minnesota Twins as they take on the Milwaukee Brewers. Seats are in section 203, along the first base line. The bus will unload at an entrance where staff will assist people to their seats. Accessible seats are available upon request. The plan is to arrive around 11:15AM for the 12:10PM game, so you'll have some time to explore before the game begins. Fee includes transportation and game ticket. Please register by June 28. No refunds thereafter.

Faribault Woolen Mill and Owatonna State Fair Thursday, August 18 8:45am - 5:15pm, $45 Head to southern Minnesota for a tour of the historic 156-year-old Faribault Woolen Mill, nestled along the Cannon River. Fifth generation craftspeople take raw wool and create blankets, throws, scarves, and accessories of remarkable comfort and quality. Irreplaceable centuryold machinery stands side by side with modern technology. Next stop, the Steele County Free Fair in Owatonna, MN. August 18 is senior day. Enjoy fair food, vendors, animals, music, shows, and a whole lot more. It is an amazing fair, and the bonus is that you do not have to deal with huge crowds and tons of walking. You will arrive at the fair by noon so that there is plenty of time to enjoy the attractions. Register by August 1, no refunds thereafter. Program Spotlights Games, Physical Fitness, Fun, and Camaraderie Mondays, 9am - Blaine Trailblazers Walking Group Trails are 1.5-3 miles in length. You can also walk on other days at local organized locations. Call Beverly at 763-571-7502 for details or stop by to pick up a map of Blaine’s weekly trail locations. Mondays, 1pm - Bowling at Blainbrook $4.50 for 3 games. Just stop in and ask for the lanes reserved for senior bowling. Meet some new folks. Free shoe rental available. Tuesdays, 9am-12pm - Table Tennis/Ping Pong This new activity is growing in popularity. Plenty of paddles and balls are available or bring your own paddle. Play singles or doubles and practice while you wait on modified tables. Tuesdays, 10am-12pm, June 14, 28 - Putting Green at Victory Links Golf Course $4. No registration required, just head to the course off 105th Avenue at the National Sports Center. Putter and balls available at no cost or bring your own. Wednesdays, 10am - Blaine Bicycle Club Various starting locations call Deb: 763-442-1958. Bike between 10-16 miles with others on various trails at a speed of about 8-10 miles per hour. A stop for a refreshment or food may be an option for the group. Thursdays, 9am-12pm - Bean Bags/Corn Hole Another new option at the MAYC. Try your skills at this fun tossing game. Play outdoors as weather permits on the south sidewalk or the north patio. A summer tournament is possible with enough interest. Fridays, 1pm - Bowling at Blainbrook $4.50 for 3 games. Just stop in and ask for the lanes reserved for senior bowling. Meet some new folks. Free shoe rental available.

Music at the MAYC Thursday, June 9, 1-2pm - North Country Jamboree Live music is coming your way! If you enjoy a variety of country music styles, register to attend this light and lively musical event featuring the North Country Jamboree led by Dan Fish. This group works hard to bring you quality music. Show your appreciation-sign up today.

Fridays, 10am - Beginner Ukulele Bring your own ukulele, or borrow one from an instructor to try out. Mondays, 1pm - Intermediate Ukulele For more advanced players. Talk to leaders to see if you qualify to attend this group. This level performs at the MAYC periodically. Second Monday of Each Month, 10:30am - Sing-along Join pianist Ardy Vos for songs that are tailored to the season of the year. You will also be invited to perform periodically. Independence Week of Fun July 5-11 Tuesday, July 5, 1pm - 500 Card Tournament Cost is $2 per person with payback prizes and an ice cream treat at end of play. Wednesday, July 6, 10:30am - CaptionCall This presentation is for people with hearing loss. It will cover how to receive a large, captioned phone so you can read what the caller is saying. The phones are easy to use and everything is completely free of charge, including installation, service, and training. Questions- call Paul at 612-516-7810. Service provided by the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Thursday, July 7, 1pm – Cribbage Tournament Cost is $2 per person. Register in advance with your partner. Landmark Tours Travel Show Wednesday, June 8, 10am Leave your worries behind as you travel by plane to fascinating and entertaining destinations. This travel company is high quality and utilized by many metropolitan area senior centers. Expect full itineraries with 4 to 5 -star accommodations as you travel to and from your chosen vacation destination. Once you arrive at the airport, a Landmark Tours representative will take it from there. Register to attend this informational session with plenty of time to answer your questions as you review the trip brochures.

Record Your Life Story at North Metro TV, June 2 or July 12 Family stories are some of the most important stories we have. What did Grandpa John do for a living? What country did Grandma Pat come from? Whatever happened to Great Aunt Barb? Too often, these kinds of stories get lost from generation to generation. North Metro TV and the Mary Ann Young Center are here to help. Thanks to a special partnership, local seniors can visit the NMTV studios in Blaine and record their precious family stories on video. Eric and the staff at North Metro TV will do all the work and then provide you with a special DVD of your story that you can share with your kids and grandkids. Best of all, it’s free. All you need is your stories and yourself. You can write down what you want to say, bring a family member to interview you, or just speak from the heart. 20-minute sessions are available from 3-7PM on Thursday, June 2 and Tuesday, July 12. One-hour appointments are available with Amy, a knowledgeable volunteer who will help you navigate your tablet, laptop, or smartphone. Registration is required. Indicate your device at time of registration.

ACCAP Senior Outreach Worker The Senior Outreach Program provides assistance to people aged 60 or older. Lisa DesRosier, senior outreach worker, serves the cities of Blaine, Ham Lake, Circle Pines, and Lexington. This Anoka County Community Action Program is aimed at helping people remain in their homes in the healthiest and safest manner possible. Clients are linked to services, including home delivered meals, food programs, economic assistance, energy assistance, chore services, and more. Assistance is given to complete the necessary paperwork, is free of charge, and an appointment is scheduled with the client in mind. Contact Lisa at 763-783-4741 ext. 3 for an appointment.

State Services for the Blind Need assistive devices to help with your vision challenges? A wide variety of equipment is available for free. A representative will meet with you by appointment at the MAYC on the third Wednesday of the month between 10AM-12PM to view and test equipment that may help you. Family Caregiver Connection - Memory Cafe June 8 & 22 - 10am-12pm Anoka County Family Caregiver Connection is excited to resume in-person services. FCC provides comprehensive support services for family caregivers. Services include 1:1 coaching/counseling, group respite, support groups, Memory Café, caregiver education classes, and community education events. Memory Café will reopen/resume meetings at the Mary Ann Young Center (MAYC) on the second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 10AM-12PM starting in June. Other caregiver programs will reopen at various facilities between now and July. Some virtual services will continue. The schedule remains to be determined. Bus Fair Rate Change Beginning July 1, $2 Roundtrip The City of Blaine Senior Advisory Board has approved a $.50 increase to ride the MAYC bus. The new rate is $2 round trip. The fare has not been raised in many years, and gas prices have increased dramatically in the past year. Thank you for your understanding in this matter. Please call at least a day ahead of time if you need to schedule a ride. There has been new interest in volunteer bus drivers lately. This is great news. Staff appreciates the dedication of current volunteer drivers and looks forward to expanding the list of available drivers.
