40th Anniversary of the MAYC Tuesday, September 20, 4-6pm A local group of seniors started holding senior club meetings in 1973. With a growing group of seniors, the City secured a grant from the Metropolitan Council to build the group a gathering place and the Blaine Senior Center opened in November 1982. The original building went through several additions and renovations before eventually being replaced by the current Mary Ann Young Center in December 2019. Mary Ann Young was the original food handler and then became the senior center coordinator in 1984. She spent the next decade serving the senior community. After her death in 1994 the City named the center in her memory. You are invited to celebrate the legacy of the MAYC and our 40th anniversary on Tuesday, September 20 from 4-6PM. Everyone is welcome to stop by to enjoy refreshments and tour the building. Professional music will be playing as people mix and mingle. Guests can also enjoy a scrolling slideshow of current happenings. Celebrate this milestone of providing a variety of quality programming to older adults in the community for the past 40 years. A short program will be held at 5PM.
Meet MAYC's Pinochle Group Leaders Sue and Ed Lashinski Get to know Sue and Ed, the leaders of the pinochle card groups at the MAYC. Sue began playing cards at the age of five, the first game she learned was poker. She figures she has played almost all card games at least a few times, except bridge. Ed grew up on a farm and played card games for entertainment. He started playing as a teenager starting with 500, Smear, Whist, and especially poker. Sue said that they don’t play cards much at home as Ed enjoys computer card games. Sue and Ed will celebrate 49 years of marriage this September and enjoy offering their services teaching others how to play pinochle at the MAYC. Thank you for your service, Ed and Sue! Beginner Pinochle, starts Monday, September 19 Interested in learning a new card game or need a refresher?
