Come Get Fancy at the Jewelry Sale Tuesday, October 4, 8:30am-5pm You are invited to attend the 18th annual Mary Ann Young Center Jewelry Sale Fundraiser. Open to the public, all are welcome to browse the huge selection of jewelry donated by a multitude of people. Earrings, necklaces, bracelets, watches, sets, and more will all be on display for sale at very reasonable prices. Spread the word! Jewelry donations are accepted throughout the year. Donors and volunteer helpers will be recognized in the November MAYC Connect. Pictured in the photo is Geri Hieb (left), volunteer leader and organizer of the sale for the past several years, and volunteer helper, Paulette Rustad. These women and others faithfully work countless hours to sort, clean, and price donated jewelry in preparations for the annual sale, which is the biggest MAYC fundraiser of the year. Proceeds are used toward entertainment and activity costs at the MAYC. You can show your appreciation of the hard work put in by the volunteers by shopping at the sale on Tuesday, October 4 from 8:30AM-5PM. Hope to see you there!
Musical Variety Show Thursday, October 27, 1-3pm Back by popular demand, this show is for you! There will be a variety of talented individuals performing various genres of music during this two-hour production, complete with a short intermission. Performers are volunteering to share their talent and the only request is to have an appreciative audience. Expect the Jamboree Band, vocal solos with guitar or piano accompaniment, sing-a-long performers, the ukulele group, and more! Dancers welcome as there will be an area cleared for you. Register today to be sure there is a seat for you at the show! If you would like to perform in the show, call MAYC staff by October 17 to register and describe your musical act at 763-786-9375.

The ukulele group pictured above, performed at the first Musical Variety Show in October 2021 and participants asked if they would consider showing off their skills at a MAYC noon luncheon, which they did. This group was such a big hit that they are planning a repeat performance in December!

Upcoming Outings and Tours Fall Festival at Canterbury Park Thursday, November 10 9:30am - 4:15pm, $53 Do you like to shop? Then this is the trip for you! Voted one of the top 100 shows in the country by Sunshine Artist Magazine, this show is brimming with row after row of handcrafted, one-of-a-kind home decor and gifts. Register for an hourly $30 gift certificate drawing and enjoy plenty of food and drink! Programs and maps will be available at the event. Trip includes transportation and the entry fee. Food and drink are on your own. Shopping at Canterbury will be from 11AM-3PM. Register by November 1, no refunds thereafter.
Andy & Bing Christmas Paramount Center for the Arts in St. Cloud Tuesday, December 13 10:35am-4:45pm, $96 If you love Christmas music, this show is sure to delight you. Delivered in a beautiful and remarkable way, enjoy the songs: Christmas in Killarney, It’s the Most Wonderful Time of the Year, White Christmas, It’s Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas, and many more. Lead vocals are handled by former U of MN Gopher and Super Bowl Champion, Ben Utecht, and Minnesota Hall of Fame and Midwest Music Hall of Fame Inductee, Mick Sterling. This concert faithfully celebrates and recreates the perfect Christmas albums of Andy Williams and Bing Crosby with a one-of-a-kind 19 -piece band that features the vocal talents of Cate Fierro, Sara Renner, Shalo Lee, and Lisi Wright along with a precise rhythm section. Before the 1:30PM show, enjoy a stop at the Green Mill in St. Cloud for lunch. Lunch choices are parmesan walleye sandwich, cob salad with chicken, 4-cheese bacon burger, fettuccine alfredo, or pomodoro florentine (shrimp pasta with tomato cream sauce). Lutefisk Dinner Thursday, November 17, 5:30pm, cost $14.50 Tickets go on sale Monday, October 3 for this delicious meal of baked Lutefisk with melted butter and cream sauce, Swedish meatballs, boiled potatoes, lefse, herring, rye bread, dessert, and more. A favorite meal of many, don’t delay. Must pay and register in person for dinner ticket.

Program Spotlights Basket Making 2nd and 4th Mondays, 10am-12pm This ongoing class is great to get the creative juices flowing and take pride in a self-made project. Join instructor Francis Shirley as she teaches the art of basket making. Basket difficulty will progress as students request and master projects. These beautifully crafted baskets can be kept or used as gifts since they are so well constructed. Prices vary based on basket materials and supplies but generally range from $11-$16 each. Tools will be available for use while at MAYC. Class is limited to 10 people.
Woodcarving Groups Tuesdays, 7pm and Wednesdays, 1pm Do you enjoy working with your hands? Consider learning or renewing the art of woodcarving. Several options are available to join in and find creative carving ideas or to enjoy casual conversation among people with a similar interest. Carving groups meet Tuesday evenings at 7PM, Wednesdays at 1PM, or attend the monthly North Metro meetings the second Sunday of the month at 2PM. Start from scratch or renew your skills. Landmark Tours Travel Show Thursday, October 27, 10am Leave your worries behind as you travel by plane to fascinating and entertaining destinations! CD Rates
Financial Opportunity Nathaniel Loge, financial advisor for Edward Jones and partner for many of the educational sessions offered at the MAYC, suggests that now may be a good time to shift funds to a safe, secure, interest-bearing CD account. Rates subject to change, but as of September 1, 2022, are 2.85% for 6-months, 3.15% for 1-year, and 3.4% for 2-years with a minimum deposit of $20,000. CD rates are bank-issued and FDIC-insured. Coffee Talk: Gab and Java Councilmember Jess Robertson made a spontaneous visit to the MAYC to deliver donated roses from Kwik Trip and met a few friends along the way. The MAYC lounge is a great place to relax and visit. Patty Sandin is one of the bus drivers for the MAYC and has been for many years. John Smithe assists Patty on Wednesday mornings to pick up and deliver bakery products to the MAYC from Cub Foods. The bakery goods are available for seniors to browse through and take an item home. Mardy Carlson stops in to peruse the bakery products and enjoys participating in a variety of card games at the MAYC. Connecting people is what the MAYC is all about. The coffee is always on during business hours for people to stop by and enjoy while chatting with friends. An open invitation is extended to you.
Movie of the Month Family Camp Thursday, October 20, 1pm Two polar-opposite families find themselves sharing a cabin for a week away at camp. With the highly coveted camp trophy at stake, dads Tommy and Eddie end up lost in the woods after a comedy of errors and mishaps. Energy Assistance Program Tuesdays, Sep 27, Oct 25 & Nov 15, 11am-1pm Looking for assistance to help pay your heating and electric bill? Senior Outreach Worker Lisa D. from Anoka County Community Action Program (ACCAP) is available to help. You can register to meet at the MAYC on the dates specified, or have Lisa come to your home to help you fill out the paperwork. Items to bring to the appointment include recent gas and electric bills, proof of income for the past three months, your social security award letter, and three pension statements if applicable. Eligibility rates will be available on October 1. Please call the MAYC to schedule your 15 minute appointment at 763-786-9375. Featured Resources Medicare Counseling 1:1 Assistance 2nd & 4th Tuesdays, 10am-1:15pm In-person appointments are now available at the MAYC by registration to help you navigate the Medicare process. Get your questions answered by a professionally trained representative of Trellis, a partner of the MN Board on Aging. Appointments are informational and neutral. You will be given facts about insurance options available, so that you can make informed decisions. Time slots are 45 minutes in length. Register early as appointments are expected to fill quickly. Family Caregiver Connection - Memory Cafe 2nd & 4th Wednesdays, 10am-12pm Anoka County Family Caregiver Connection has resumed in-person services. FCC provides comprehensive support services for family caregivers. Services include 1:1 coaching/counseling, group respite, support groups, Memory Café, caregiver education classes, and community education events. Memory Café meetings are held at the Mary Ann Young Center (MAYC) on the second and fourth Wednesdays and are available for both caregiver and care receiver to attend. Virtual support groups meet on Mondays and Tuesdays. Respite and Caregiver Groups meet on specified Tuesdays and Thursdays. MN State Services for the Blind and Visually Impaired 3rd Wednesday, 10am Need assistive devices to help with your vision challenges? A wide variety of equipment is available for free.
