Income Tax Assistance Tuesdays Beginning February 7, 9am-12pm In-person appointments are back! Thanks to a generous volunteer coordinator, AARP will again offer income tax assistance. Registration will begin January 18. Appointments are 30 minutes each. Be prepared by having all your items needed to file your income taxes including your health insurance card, Social Security card, driver's license or photo ID, copy of last year’s filed taxes, all 2022 documents to file, and income and expenses. Appointments are expected to fill quickly.

Upcoming Outings and Tours Bell Museum and Planetarium Thursday, January 26 10:15am-3:30pm, $81 First stop is lunch at Longfellow Grill in Minneapolis. Make meal choice at time of registration: honey lime chicken salad, blue plate burger, grilled chicken sandwich, or oatmeal pancakes with a fruit cup. Next head to Minnesota’s official natural history museum and planetarium now located on the University of Minnesota Twin Cities campus in Saint Paul. Explore the origins of the universe, the diversity of life on earth, and take a walk through the state of Minnesota, featuring worldfamous wildlife dioramas. Lastly, an awe-inspiring show at the planetarium will complete the day. Register by January 5, no refunds thereafter.
The Church Basement Ladies at Ames Center-Burnsville Wednesday, February 1 10:45am-4:15pm, $94 The Church Basement Ladies are at it again as they present the hilarious comedy “Plowin’ Thru”. In the 9th Installment of the highly successful series, the year is 1975 and all your favorite characters are back! Whether this is your first visit to the basement, or you’ve seen ‘em all, you won’t want to miss this brand-new show. Come along as the ladies don their polyester pantsuits and sing, dance, and laugh their way through this hilarious and touching new musical. American Swedish Institute and Bachman's Thursday, March 23, 9am-3pm, $75 The American Swedish Institute is a historic museum, a cultural education center, a café, a destination store, an historic mansion and more. Located in Minneapolis, ASI presents art and cultural exhibitions and offers innovative educational programming. It is home to the historic Turnblad Mansion, FIKA Café and ASI’s Museum Store. Following ASI will be a lunch from Patrick’s Bakery and Café, located within Bachman’s. State your meal preference at time of registration from the following options: • Classic ham sandwich on croissant • Turkey sandwich on bacon cheese bread • Chicken ranch wrap • Bistro salad with greens, chicken, cranberries, walnuts, blue cheese, and raspberry vinaigrette • Chicken Caesar salad Choose a cookie for dessert, chocolate chip or craisin oatmeal. Program Spotlights Beginner and Refresher Pinochle Mondays beginning January 23, 10am
Interested in learning or refreshing your skills at the game of Pinochle? Look no further! Leaders Sue and Ed Lashinski invite you to join them at a table beginning January 23. This game is great for keeping minds alert and uses terminology such as: melds, runs, marriages, pinochle (Jack of Diamonds/Queen of Spades), and more. Have fun while learning this great thinking card game. Once skills are learned, move to the intermediate session on Mondays at 1PM. Register in advance to join in.
Wii Nintendo Bowling League Tuesdays beginning January 10, 9am or 10am
It is surprising how much exercise you get playing this fun activity using a handheld remote and “bowling” toward one of the large screen TV’s. The best part is the camaraderie! Make new friends while engaging in low key competition. This eight-week series will conclude with a mini banquet, league results, and a mini “poker” tournament in which players make a poker hand from drawing a card after each strike or spare. Acrylic Painting Classes Tuesdays, January 10, 17, 24, and 31, 10am, Free With guidance, learn step by step how to create a beautiful painting using acrylics. Debra Hoffoss will lead a fourpart series using vibrant colors, on consecutive Tuesdays beginning January 10 at 10AM. Debra currently resides in Circle Pines and is very involved in her community. She will supply the materials and instructions to complete the painting project by the end of the fourth session. If you have a picture or idea you would like to paint in the class, bring it with you. You may take your finished painting home to enjoy or give as a gift. All levels of experience are welcome! Dress casual. Those who did not finish their painting from August classes can receive valuable tips between instructions to new class participants, during the January sessions. Cooking with Glo Second Friday of Month beginning January 13, 1:15pm, $21 Glo’s love of cooking began over a 20-year span of travel. She lived overseas from the Pacific to the Middle East and areas in between, before settling down and growing roots in Minnesota. Glo will demonstrate the preparation of various types of cooking: Asian, Middle Eastern, Mexican, Italian, and Mediterranean cuisine. You will be able to enjoy eating what has been prepared. This stand-up cooking class will take place in the kitchen. A face mask is required during class. The first class on January 13 will feature an Asian favorite: egg rolls with dipping sauce. Participants will choose recipes from Glo’s list for her to prepare/ demonstrate in future classes. Class size: 5-8. Registration required at least one week in advance. Movie of the Month Gigi and Nate, Thursday, January 12, 1pm This uplifting drama inspired by actual events portrays a young man named Nate who suffers a near-fatal illness and is left a quadriplegic just weeks before heading to college. As Nate attempts to adjust to this dramatic life change, his mother, Oscar winner Marcia Gay Harden, brings home a service animal, Gigi a curious and intelligent Capuchin monkey. Landmark Tours Travel Show Wednesday, February 8, 1pm Leave your worries behind as you travel by plane to exotic and entertaining destinations! This travel company is high quality and utilized by many metro area senior centers. Expect full itineraries with 4-5 star accommodations. Upon arrival at the airport, a Landmark Tours representative will take it from there. North Metro Woodcarver Fundraiser Thank You for Your Generosity A special thank you goes out to the woodcarving groups who meet at the Mary Ann Young Center. A collection of homemade carvings were available during the holiday season for people to purchase as mementos of the beautiful craftsmanship of MAYC’s local carvers. There were nearly 100 ornaments donated as a fundraiser for the Mary Ann Young Center! The first woodcarving group at the MAYC was started by Wes Spadgenske in 2002. There are now three meeting dates within a month that people can be involved in: Tuesday evenings at 7PM, Wednesdays at 1PM, and generally the second Sunday of the month at 2PM. Enrollment is open year-round for those with an interest. Call to inquire at 763-786-9375.
Minnesota History of Life Doug Ohman Presentation, Friday, January 27, 10:30am, $3 Featuring Minnesota’s own historian and storyteller, Doug Ohmann will bring Minnesota history to life in these full color presentations. January will feature the first of a three-part series entitled “Down the Mississippi in Minnesota”. Enjoy America’s best-loved river with Doug as he paddles from Lake Itasca to Little Falls and brings this trip to life on a large screen TV with his fabulous photos and stories. Featured Resources Caregiver Support Group 2nd and 4th Wednesdays, 10am-12pm The Family Caregiver Connection of Anoka County led by coordinator Jill Agekum, invites those caring for an older adult to attend support meetings at the Mary Ann Young Center. Caregiver support groups help caregivers build support networks, provide comfort, and share information about caregiving issues. New friendships often develop from these meetings. Just knowing there are others having similar difficulties helps put life into perspective and can shed light on new approaches to caregiving. Register in advance to attend.
Defensive Driving Refresher Classes Specified Thursdays, 8:45am-1pm, $25 Four-hour refresher classes will be held on specified Thursdays. Classes fill quickly, so plan ahead and register early. These classes are led by an instructor from MN Highway Safety and Research Center. Participants receive a discount of 10 percent on car insurance for three years from the date of taking this class, in addition to learning new tips for driving safely. Winter/spring class dates: January 12, February 9, March 9, April 13.
Food Distribution Program Second Sunday of each month Location: 10506 Hanson Blvd NW, Coon Rapids MN Free drive-thru food distribution takes place each month from 12-2PM at the corner of Hanson and Coon Rapids Blvd. No requirements or data collected. Everyone is welcome, including walkers. Food supplied by Every Meal, Bergin Fruit & Nut Company, and local restaurants. Volunteer help is appreciated. For more information, search @SpiritofMatthew25.
Mid Minnesota Legal Aid In-person assistance on the 1st Tuesday of the Month, 11am-1pm Beginning January 3, appointments will be scheduled the first Tuesday of the month at the Mary Ann Young Center in the conference room. Have questions about a legal issue? Mid Minnesota Legal Aid will help get you started to find answers to your legal questions. Specify your topic of interest at time of registration, so that Legal Aid staff can prepare in advance of your appointment. Time slots are 30 minutes in length. You must be an Anoka County resident to qualify for this program.
Your overall health, productivity, and happiness are closely tied to the strength of your immune system. Register to attend this session led by Health and Wellness Consultant, Heather Carpentier as she helps you uncover foods and natural solutions to get your immune system in tiptop condition. Advanced registration required. Minimum class size: 5. January class will determine title of next session, which will be held on Friday, March 10 at 10AM.
Take Down Holiday Decorations Tuesday, January 3 9:30-11:45am Volunteers are needed to disassemble trees and put the decorations away at the Mary Ann Young Center. The goal is to get everything properly stored on January 3. Please call to let staff know if you plan to help. Thank you!
