A Tribute to Veterans In honor of Veterans Day, Bob Lederman, a regular diner at the MAYC, agreed to an interview to share his story. Bob graduated from high school in Perham, Minnesota. At the age of 19, he went to Fergus Falls and registered to be drafted into the Army. He took a train to Fort Ord, California for eight weeks of basic training as a clerk. Bob was the first group to fly overseas. He boarded a plane that had four engines and seated 100 passengers. His flight schedule carried him from California, to Hawaii, to Wake Island, and then to Japan, in a span of about 24 hours. The plane needed to refuel at each stop. After about a two day stay in Japan, Bob boarded a plane generally used to haul heavy equipment and was seated and strapped into what was called a “Flying Box Car” for his flight to his military service destination in Korea. That was in 1958. He served as a clerk for the 4th Ordinance Battalion Headquarters for 16 months, after which he was honorably discharged. Bob recalls it being a good experience, as it was peacetime. Upon returning home, Bob landed in Columbia Heights where he was a barber for 48 years. He married his wife Bette in 1965, moved to Fridley, and has lived in the area ever since. Bob enjoys meeting and socializing with others when he comes to the MAYC for lunch. He is a very good storyteller! Thank you for sharing your story with us, Bob. And thank you to the many who have served in the Armed Forces. Happy Veterans Day.
