Tribute to Veterans
Veterans Day marks an important moment to show our enduring gratitude and respect both for all who have served in the United States Armed Forces and for their families. We can never fully repay our debt to those who answered the call to military service and risked their lives in defense of our country. These patriots have epitomized the timeless virtues of honor, integrity, selflessness, and courage.
Vern McClanahan, our MAYC bus driver and volunteer, served in the Air Force for five years out of high school. That is where Vern was able to work and travel the world learning valuable skills that set him up in life for success and future service opportunities. His choice to serve his country was an easy one. Giving back to the country and helping people is what he loves to do.
After the service, Vern began his career with Veterans Affairs at the VA Hospital. In addition, Vern has volunteered and helped with a number of senior service organizations and disabled veteran groups. We are very fortunate and want to thank Vern for continuing his sense of service with us here at the Mary Ann Young Center.
And, on this and every Veterans Day, we remember and honor all of our veterans and all they continue to do for our country. We also honor the spouses, partners, and children of our service members for their sacrifices and support.

Movie of the Month: Fly Me to the Moon

An American romantic comedy drama film starring Scarlett Johansson as Kelly Jones, a marketing specialist, and Channing Tatum as Cole Davis, a NASA launch director. Set against the backdrop of the Apollo 11 mission, Kelly, who is hired by the government to help swing public opinion back in favor of space exploration. In the late 1960s, “a lot of the American public was opposed to funding the moon mission,” Gilroy explains. There was widespread social unrest, with the Vietnam War and civil rights movement, “and people felt, ‘Why are we spending money on this when we could be spending money on all these people who need it here?’” With so much on the line, the story follows Jones and Davis as they are tasked with creating a fake moon landing in case the actual mission fails.
See this comedy/action flick on our large screen TV with overhead speakers. Rated PG-13. Popcorn served at a brief intermission.
