The Anoka County Parks Department, in collaboration with the Blaine Parks and Recreation Department, is thrilled to be offering the annual Snow Day event at Wargo Nature Center. Participants of all ages will have a chance to enjoy a variety of winter activities, including: snowshoeing, ice fishing, kicksledding, fat tire biking, winter crafts, temporary tattoos, and a live animal presentation. Sing, laugh, move, and learn along with your baby, toddler, or preschooler for 45-minutes of pure fun each week in these award-winning classes. • Bond more closely with your child through song. • Make new friends for both you and your little ones. • Support your child’s overall development, knowing that music learning supports all learning. • Help your child learn to sing and dance as naturally as they learn to walk and talk. • Have loads of fun, because children teach themselves through play! Babysitting ages 11 & up

Learn to be responsible babysitters by examining safety guidelines, child development, finding jobs, rates, and first aid. Hands-on experience with diapers and bottle feeding are included. Participants receive a packet of materials and certificates are awarded to all students who successfully demonstrate the skills during one of the class dates below. Must be age 11 by date of class. The group lessons will introduce and develop participants in the lifelong game of tennis. Community Gardens Interested in gardening but live in an apartment or townhome? Perhaps your yard is too shady? Consider renting a community garden plot. The Blaine Community Garden is located adjacent to Blaine City Hall’s south parking lot and consists of 56 plots. The City will prepare the soil for planting, mark each plot, and provide water access. Plots are approximately 15 feet by 20 feet; half-plots are 15 feet by 10 feet; and raised beds are 4 feet by 8 feet. Plots will be ready for use in early May. One plot per household. Registration forms are available online at BlaineParks.com and at Blaine City Hall. Youth Sports VolleyKats ages 2 to 5

This fun parent/child class will introduce your little one to the sport of volleyball. Athletes will develop motor skills using engaging, fun games that delight and intrigue kids. The goal is to improve the child’s fitness, volleyball skills, and athleticism while introducing the joy of sports activity. Hoopster Tots ages 2 to 4

This fun skill intensive program is designed for the beginning player. Using the curriculum that is built on a progress, our staff focus on the whole player, teaching respect, teamwork, and responsibility. An active camp involving passing, shooting, dribbling, and defense makes this one of our most popular programs. Participants should bring appropriate clothing, water bottle and gym shoes. Join us for a day of ice fishing! Through hands-on teaching, we will teach you to use an ice auger, how to use an ice fishing rod and reel, and other ice fishing equipment. We’ll walk you through how to tie lures. Once you’ve drilled your own hole to fish, we will teach you the basics of ice fishing and how to use live and artificial baits. We will also teach you about staying safe on the ice while ice fishing and talk about conservation. The participation fee includes a new rod and reel to use in the class, which you will keep and take home. Participants will also be provided with artificial and live bait. Learn to Curl

This program is a great opportunity for youth to learn the sport of curling. During the seven sessions, youth will learn how to slide, throw the stone, and sweep the stone, along with the rules of the game. Beginner and intermediate instruction provided, so this program is a great place to try curling for the first time. Curling equipment is provided, but please wear comfortable clothes and socks that are warm enough for 45 degree air temp, consider thin gloves, and bring a clean pair of athletic shoes (not worn from the parking lot into the building, please). A Learn to Curl clinic is a great way for anyone, age 12 to adult, to get their first exposure to the sport. The Mary Ann Young Center (MAYC) is located by Aquatore Park just off Highway 65 and Cloverleaf Parkway. As a focal point for seniors, the center’s staff and volunteers offer a dynamic variety of programs and social events throughout the year. The senior dining program offers noon meals at a suggested donation of $5 for people age 60 and over, and a cost of $8 for those under age 60. Please call four business days in advance to register for the noon meal. Van service is available for residents of Blaine to transport participants to and from the MAYC for a cost of just $2 per round trip. Thursday, April 11, 1-3pm, $1 suggested donation Back by popular demand, this is a great event to showcase those wishing to perform before a crowd. Expect a nice variety of entertainers from the North Country Jamboree to a ukulele group, a sing-along group, vocal and instrumental solos, duets, and more. If you are a performer looking to be in the show, contact MAYC staff by April 4. Spectators should register by April 9 to ensure adequate seating for the event.

Cooking with Glo

Defensive Driving Classes

1:30pm, $21/session

9am-1pm, $25

Glo will purchase and bring all the ingredients to prepare a dish for participants to eat on-site or to take home. Participants from the previous class will help choose this recipe. This class will take place in the MAYC commercial kitchen. Class size is 6-8 participants.

Four-hour refresher classes will be held on specified Thursdays. Classes fill quickly, so register early. Classes are led by an instructor from MN Highway Safety and Research Center. Participants receive discounts of 10 percent on car insurance for three years after taking this class.

Registration and Policies The Parks and Recreation Department strives to provide community programs and services where unmet interests and needs exist, and to promote cooperation with schools, athletic and civic organizations, community agencies, and interested individuals in the areas of education, recreation, and social and cultural pursuits.

Help End Park Vandalism

How to Register Online

Visit the Parks and Recreation homepage at BlaineParks.com and find the online registration link. A username and password are needed to register. Click on create an account to get started. Only credit card payments are accepted online. Online registration is available at no additional fee.

In Person

Residents may register in person at the Customer Service Center on the first floor at Blaine City Hall, Monday - Friday, 8AM to 4:30PM. Residents are defined as individuals living within Blaine city limits. Proof of residency may be required.

Payments

Cash, check, and credit card payments are accepted. Specific modes of registration may require a certain type of payment. Fees must be paid at the time of registration.

Refunds

Refunds are given if Blaine Parks and Recreation cancels the program or if registration fails because the activity is full. Participants canceling at least seven days prior to an activity will be charged a cancellation fee as follows: $5 for programs costing $10-$99; $10 for programs costing $100 or more. Refunds will not be given for programs costing less than $10 or for cancellations made less than seven days prior to the program start date. Trip refunds are subject to specific policies on a per-trip basis, based on advanced ticket purchases. Participants must contact the Parks and Recreation Department to request a refund.

The Blaine Police Department and Park Patrol need your help to prevent vandalism and apprehend those who vandalize parks and recreation facilities. Vandals destroy what tax dollars have created. Costs associated with repairing vandalized property takes money away from recreational programs and facilities. Help stop vandalism. Always call 9-1-1 to report a crime in progress, including vandalism. To report a crime that occurred in a park but does not require an immediate police response, call 763-427-1212. Calls are accepted 24 hours a day and you can remain anonymous.

No News is Good News

Some programs and activities may require a minimum number of participants. You will only be notified if the class/activity is full or canceled. You will not receive a confirmation letter or call.

Participant Code of Conduct

All participants are expected to exhibit appropriate behavior at all times while participating, watching, or attending any program or activity conducted or sponsored by the City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department. The following guidelines are designed to provide safe and enjoyable activities for all participants. • Show respect to all participants and program staff. • Take direction from program staff/supervisors. • Refrain from using abusive or foul language. • Refrain from causing bodily harm to self, other participants or program staff/supervisors. • Refrain from damaging equipment, supplies, or facilities. Failure to follow these rules may result in a suspension of participation. The City of Blaine Parks and Recreation Department strives to make your participation fun-filled, rewarding, educational, and safe. Thank you in advance for your cooperation.
