Welcome
Funfare Magazine • Fall 2017 Dear Friends and Neighbors, We’ve had an exciting, fun-filled summer at the Recreation and Parks Department, where over 275 kids spent their summer smiling, laughing and having a blast in camp! The fun doesn’t stop just because the kids are back in school! There’s something for everyone, with activities focused on areas such as the arts, dance, music and fitness. We encourage you to get engaged and “make life fun!” We are committed to building a strong, healthy community while serving the needs of our residents. One of the ways we do this is through the recent Health and Wellness Pledge. Statistics show that 1 in 3 children in our country are overweight or classified as obese. We are working to fight obesity throughout our programs and encourage you to join in the fight. As the weather cools, take advantage of the falling temperatures and head outside! Whether it’s a walk along Oceanfront Park or swimming at Denson Pool, there are numerous spaces and places to get moving in Boynton Beach! To build a strong, healthy community, we must involve our kids. Our team is excited to launch Fit2Play, the interactive and educational wellness component to the Kids Club afterschool program. This evidence-based program focuses on fitness, nutrition, nature appreciation and more to help children discover the fun in fitness. With Fit2Play, kids will enjoy teambuilding through games and sports that promote physical activity and build leadership and social skills. They’ll learn how to make healthy nutrition choices to fuel their bodies. Their progress will be tracked so they can take an active role in their health and well-being. Our goal with this program is to nurture healthy habits that will last these children a lifetime! Interested in learning more? Contact the Art Center at 561-742-6221. Here’s to a great fall season. Get outside, get active and, most importantly, have fun! Amy Blackman, CPRP Recreation Superintendent

Instructor Spotlight Shivon Jackson-Schmidtz Silent Painting Party How did you first become interested in painting? I have loved art since I was a young adolescent. I became ill at the age of 18 months and lost my hearing due to illness. Many people say if you lose a sense, your other senses become much stronger…my art proves that true! I received my certification from Art Instructions School in Minneapolis, MN and I have worked for world-renowned artist Romero Britto in Miami, FL.
What is the most rewarding part of teaching painting? It is rewarding to see people who think they are unable to paint discover how easy it really is. In addition, when I see many of them smiling and laughing as they paint, I know that not only are they creating a special piece of art, they are having fun, and that’s important to me too!

My painting class shows you how easy it really is to paint, as well as communicate with the deaf. Painting is a visual communication of feelings and thoughts. In my class, you learn with your eyes and express with your hands. Students learn a little sign language too, which is always exciting!
Shaun Alkins, Recreation Specialist Shaun joined the Department in June of this year. He has worked for the School District of Palm Beach County for 12 years and at numerous summer camps for 15 years, where he began as a counselor and worked his way up to director. SEA TURTLES There are five species of sea turtles in Florida: Loggerhead, Green, Hawksbill, Leatherback, and Kemps Ridley. The Loggerhead is the most common sea turtle in Florida. Florida beaches are home to 80% of Loggerhead turtles in the U.S. An adult weighs an average of approximately 275 pounds. A female turtle nests every two to three years. She crawls to shore at night and lays 50 to 200 eggs (depending on the species) the size of a ping pong ball. This process may take several hours. Turtles can migrate thousands of miles, but usually return to lay their eggs on the same beach where they hatched. Females usually lay several clutches of eggs per season. Scientists estimate that only 1 in 1,000 to 10,000 babies will survive to adulthood. Sea turtles live their entire life in the ocean. The only time they come ashore is when the female lays her eggs. Hatchlings weigh less than one ounce and are only two inches long. Adults can grow over 3 feet long and weigh 200 to 300 pounds! In 2016, Oceanfront Park had 49 turtle nests during the season, which runs from March 1 to October 31. You Can Help! If you are visiting, or live near the beach, you can help by keeping outside lights off during turtle season and allowing dune vegetation such as sea grapes to grow and block the light. Make sure to remove chairs, umbrellas and other gear from the beach each night. Level all sand castles and fill any holes dug during play. Please pick up all trash. Sea turtles mistakenly eat debris, especially plastic, which results in death. For more information, visit www.myfwc.com/education
Oceanside Beach Service offers a cabana service. You can rent a lounge chair and umbrella to make your experience at the beach even more fun. Prices range from $7/hour for an umbrella to $42/day for a cabana.
