City wins Most Outstanding Green Government award BOYNTON BEACH – The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) South Florida Chapter recently awarded the City of Boynton Beach the title of Most Outstanding Green Government. The designation was announced during a ceremony August 27 at the GalaVerde 2011 South Florida’s LEEDership and Green Awards Program at the Signature Grand in Davie. USGBC recognized the city for its sustainability efforts at Tuesday night’s City Commission meeting. “We are proud and excited that Boynton Beach has been recognized for our sustainable practices,” Mayor Jose Rodriguez said. “We are leaders by example and hope that businesses, homeowners and other municipalities will see the environmental, social and financial benefit of being a green community.” William C. Whiteford, president and CEO of Team Plan, Inc., and a member of the South Florida USGBC nominated the city for the award because it was the first in Palm Beach County to have a comprehensive Climate Action Plan. The city’s Green Building Program is one of only two such programs in the country. The City of Boynton Beach competed against 8 other government entities, including the City of Wellington and the School District of Palm Beach County, to earn this distinction. “What an honor for our city to be recognized by the USGBC after considering that list of finalists,” Commissioner Marlene Ross said. “It's a true testament to the strategic vision of the city's long-range Climate Action Plan, including our Green Building Program. City staff, the commission and many individuals in the community have continued to collaborate in wonderful ways for the sake of sustainability efforts over the past 3-plus years.” To see video of GalaVerde 2011 South Florida’s LEEDership and Green Awards Program, visit http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1_K67qLlPYU.
