COUNCIL WRAP UP FROM MAYOR
LEWIS
FIRED UP FOR READING
The Forney Fire Department, in partnership with Forney ISD and Walmart, announced the campus winners for the “Get Fired Up for Reading” contest that encouraged students to compete for reading the most minutes. The Forney Fire Department previously sent a fire truck to the grand prize winners’ homes and took each one to school in the fire truck and later went back to have lunch with them. At City Council, each campus winner was then given a bicycle from Walmart. Congratulations to all the winners. Great job!
WILLETT ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ZONE
Modification to the existing school zone limits for Willett Elementary was approved by Council. Based on reevaluating the standard distance for school zone signage related to other traffic control devices at school crossing locations, it was necessary to extend the northern limit of the school zone on Gateway Boulevard by another 100 feet.
TERRELL STATE HOSPITAL SUPPORT LETTER
City Council approved a letter of support for allocation of State funds for construction of a new facility to replace Terrell State Hospital. Terrell State’s Superintendent and Medical Director, Dr. Mark Messer, addressed Council about the current demands on its facilities. Back in 2004, a conditions assessment revealed that 76% of the campus buildings were in critical or poor condition. With most buildings dating from the 1920s to 1970s, the hospital is faced with excessive maintenance costs. There are currently 10 state-wide hospitals, and Terrell State serves 31 Texas counties.
UNIFORM COLLECTION DRIVE
The end of the year School Uniform Collection Drive is underway. Going on until May 24th, students in Forney ISD can drop off gently used and clean uniforms at any of the Forney schools or anytime at the First Presbyterian Church of Forney located at 12433 FM 1641 (next to Henderson).
