Congratulations, Josh Avalos! High Point Parks & Recreation is excited to congratulate Josh Avalos of Oak Hollow Marina on recently passing the Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP) exam! Fun fact: On the same day he took this very comprehensive exam, Josh first worked to clear snow and ice at the Oak Hollow Campground and other Oak Hollow facilities. He left to go take the test, aced it and then came back for more snow/ice clearing that afternoon. Thank you for your dedication and hard work, Josh, and congratulations on this professional achievement! Josh Avalos

Congratulations, Tanya Work! There is more good news from our hard-working, high-achieving team. Congratulations to Tanya Work, center supervisor at Allen Jay Recreation Center, on becoming a Certified Parks and Recreation Professional (CPRP)! Tanya joined High Point Parks & Recreation in 2018 and says, “High Point is the best place to work. As I prepared for my CPRP exam, great discussions with my co-workers helped me become better prepared. I also enjoy partnering with them to create programs and activities for our community.” Along with a supportive group of colleagues, here’s the other secret to Tanya’s achievement: a great egg and cheese sandwich made by her 13-year-old son Carson on the morning of the test. Way to go, Tanya! 4

Focus On Let's get ready for summer camp! Summer camp provides a safe, structured and fun environment for kids to learn new things, enhance their social and leadership skills and make new friends. Whether you are seeking educational or recreation programs, outdoor experiences, a variety of group activities or sports-focused summer experiences for your child, High Point Parks & Recreation offers a wide variety of opportunities. Three summer day camp programs are based at Allen Jay, Deep River and Oakview recreation centers for rising first through sixth graders. Campers will enjoy traditional favorite camp activities such as arts & crafts, field trips, team sports and much more. For rising seventh through ninth graders, our Trailblazers Camp provides opportunities to develop leadership skills, a passion for recreation and days filled with arts & crafts, field trips, team sports and more. Camp Ann is a longtime summer camp tradition for people with physical and intellectual disabilities, offered by High Point Parks & Recreation’s ASPIRE (Adaptive Sports, Programs & Inclusive Recreation) section. Weekly sessions provide arts and crafts, games, socialization and recreation. For youth with a sincere interest in nature and the environment, Piedmont Environmental Center has multiple options! One-day junior camps include Pond and Lake Camp, Bird Camp, Bug Camp, Rock Camp and Herpetology Camp and allow kids to explore a variety of interests in a short time. Week-long Summer Nature Camps are also offered, as well as a more intensive two-day Herp Camp. Trailblazers Campers and Park Ranger Thomas Roehm PEC’s Eco Camp is a two-day camp for middle school students designed to give campers first-hand experience in wildlife investigation techniques. Campers will use tools associated with measuring and recording wildlife observations and engage in activities that foster an understanding of wildlife and natural resource management. For young sports enthusiasts, Morehead Recreation Center’s Discovery Sports Camp is an opportunity for athletes to learn new skills and sharpen their abilities over the summer. Staff and camp counselors with vast sports experience will facilitate this exciting program! Oak Hollow Tennis Center and Oak Hollow Golf Course will also offer some great options this summer. Five-day tennis camps are led by our professionals and include all the basic skills of tennis, enabling each player to move to the next level. Emphasis is on point play, proper technique and court movement. Players will learn how to rally and play points against one another through drills, fun games, endurance and footwork development. The full-day PGA Junior Golf Camps for intermediate to advanced junior golfers focus on skill improvement and course management expertise. Participants are organized into smaller groups based on ability level and age. In the afternoon, campers head to the course for supervised play that emphasizes course management, shot selection and rules. Boys and girls of all athletic abilities are welcome!
