Aside from the pool, High Point City Lake Park’s most iconic attraction is, without a doubt, the train. From the time the original red train, donated by the Rotary Club of High Point, arrived at High Point City Lake Park in 1953, generations of High Point’s children have begged to go to the park as often as possible to ride it. High Point University generously donated a new train, which is now purple, in 2017. The train and a nearby carousel operate on a seasonal schedule, approximately Memorial Day through early October.
High Point City Lake Park’s marina rents several types of boats, including Jon boats, paddle boats, kayaks, canoes and stand-up paddle boards. You can also purchase fishing licenses, bait, tackle and other items you might need to enjoy a day on the serene waters of the 277-acre Arnold J. Koonce, Jr. Lake.
In 2019, residents of High Point voted for a bond referendum to help renovate High Point City Lake Park. Design of the new facility began in 2020, with construction following in 2021. When current renovations are complete and the pool reopens in May 2023, visitors can enjoy new features, including a splash pad, 50-meter pool, zero depth entry with a lazy river and play features, two new water slides and renovated locker rooms. Extensive renovations were completed on the old gymnasium. When the doors reopen in November 2022, there will be a state-of-the-art, 6,600-square-foot meeting and event center perfect for your next indoor celebration or meeting.
