Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education

Parents and Toddlers: Bat Masks (Ages 3 - 5)

Take a hike with a PEC staff naturalist to learn about bats, our flying furry friends of the night. We'll talk about their lives, habits and diets; afterwards, we will create a simple bat mask for participants to take home and enjoy. Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, October 8, 10 - 11 a.m. $5 per child

Parents and Toddlers: Pick-Your-Own Leaf Wreath (Ages 3 - 5)

Take a walk through the beautiful autumn woods with a PEC staff naturalist to collect leaves. Participants will bring them back to our classroom and make seasonal leaf wreaths made out of paper, glue and the colorful leaves discovered on the hike! Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, November 12, 10 - 11 a.m. $5 per child Parents and Toddlers: Animal Winter Coats (Ages 3 - 5)

Parents and toddlers will take a short winter hike with a naturalist at Piedmont Environmental Center to introduce the topic of how fur and feathers keep animals dry and warm during the winter. Afterwards, they will head inside to conduct a science experiment that will show them how animals stay dry and warm using paper bear cutouts, wax crayons, pipets and water. First, participants will color in their papers with the wax crayons, making a hydrophobic layer that repels water. Then, they will use their pipets to drip water onto their paper. This will demonstrate the natural oils that animals produce to stay dry. Participants can take their “water-proof” bears home to enjoy and help reinforce the experience. Piedmont Environmental Center Saturday, December 10, 10 - 11 a.m. $5 per child You can register for all programs by visiting our website or calling our office at 336.883.3469.

Outdoor Adventure & Nature Education

Junior Winter Camp (Ages 6 - 7)

Junior Winter Camp is a one-day camp experience specifically designed for young nature enthusiasts. Six and seven-year-old campers will be engaged in outdoor nature adventures as they learn about the lives of plants, birds, mammals and other animals in the winter season. Throughout the day, campers will take weather measurements and gain an understanding of how wind, temperature and moisture relate to the life cycles of living things in winter. Piedmont Environmental Center Friday, December 30, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. $50 per person for members, $60 for non-members Winter Nature Camp (Ages 8 - 12)

For two days of winter vacation, PEC will once again host its Winter Nature Camp. This year, campers will be engaged in a giant game of "Natural Clue" with activities that use the "tools," visit the "places" and sort out the "characters" of the game. Using the classroom as a base laboratory for investigations, campers set out to find clue stations set up in the forest, grounds and garden areas of PEC. Clue stations include Talking Trees, Wild About Weather, Bird Beak Mix-up, Underground Escapes, Made-up Maps, Tipi Tales and more. Activities and events take place outdoors and on the trails, so campers need to be dressed for outdoor play. Each day, campers need to bring a lunch, two snacks and a water bottle. Piedmont Environmental Center Wednesday & Thursday, Dec. 28 & 29, 8:30 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. $25 per person for members, $30 for non-members Halloween Safari (All Ages)
