en Miami Beach hotels will transform their public spaces into contemporary art interventions this December as part of Art Week Miami Beach in a program called “No Vacancy.” The program will allow residents and visitors to experience art in some of Miami Beach’s best known hotels. The program is not only meant to celebrate artists, but also to provoke critical discourse and encourage the public to reimagine iconic properties as destination art spaces. “Miami Beach is known internationally as a destination to experience contemporary public art,” explained Dawn McCall, who chairs the Miami Beach Cultural Arts Council. “‘No Vacancy’ pushes the boundaries of traditional gallery spaces and invites our residents and visitors to encounter art in our unique hotel properties.” Ten artists were selected by a curatorial panel to take part in the inaugural year of “No Vacancy.” They’re eligible for $25,000 in prize money, including a $5,000 prize determined by a public vote and a $20,000 prize decided by a panel of art experts. Each artist who is selected for the program will also receive $10,000, which covers fabrication, installation and insurance costs for the display of their works. The program is part of Miami Beach’s commitment to curating and attracting the best in art and culture for the public to enjoy at no cost.
“As a global destination known for art and culture, Miami Beach is proud to be home to the upcoming international art exhibition, ‘No Vacancy,’” added Steve Adkins, who chairs the Miami Beach Visitor and Convention Authority. “A collection of our city’s marquee hotels will feature the selected artwork, giving our visitors and locals a new art experience to enjoy.” Follow the city’s social media accounts (@MiamiBeachNews) for a chance to vote for your favorite artist in the people’s choice award.
