ACTIVE LIVING GUIDE
Message from the Mayor I am pleased to offer a few words to encourage everyone to give serious consideration to the importance of being active to foster and maintain good health. Whatever your activity of choice be it swimming, cycling, walking, running or hiking our many beautiful trails, the important thing is to keep active. Ensuring we are pro-active in our commitment to good health encourages others by example. If you have not yet had opportunity to check out our new bike park, you are in for a treat. Enthusiasts of this pastime are thrilled to be out and about at the park. Fitness opportunities at our recreation complex continue to offer something to satisfy every appetite. The world is at our doorstep with our many hiking trails. The Sunshine Coast trail can easily be defined as a true labour of love. Stretching 180 kms from Sarah Point to Saltery Bay it traverses the wilderness mountains of our region attracting many tourists and locals alike. With its addition of Hut to Hut hiking now available along the trail, it continues to gain international acclaim and is a truly unforgettable experience. My message to you — get out and move! Life is more rewarding when one has their health! God Bless all of you! David J. Formosa Mayor

CLEAR YOUR ESCAPE ROUTES A message from Powell River Fire Rescue •
•
Your escape routes can make all the difference in surviving a structure fire. Make a plan, define your routes and keep them clear. Remove furniture or plants that may be blocking doors or windows. • Plastic insulation over windows can help with heat loss; however, ensure everyone in your home can remove it in an emergency.

•
•
•
Never nail or paint windows shut. Padlocks should never be used on an exit door or window; keep all your options open and install a proper lock mechanism. Toys, recycling and other household goods can easily accumulate in front of doors, on stairs or in hallways. Check this weekly and remove anything that impedes your movement. When looking for space for your holiday decorations ensure they do not obstruct movement. For help with your home escape plan call Powell River Fire Rescue 604 485-4431

Karate ... a great investment More than ever in today’s world, your child needs positive values and self- discipline to succeed. Our unique programs will teach your child a series of physical skills which will quickly translate into a feeling of confidence and high self-esteem. This, in turn, will promote self-discipline and concentration which often pays off at school in the form of higher grades. Add to all of this a positive attitude, acceptance of responsibility, and leadership skills, and you can see why so many parents feel that martial arts lessons are the best investment that they have ever made for their child. So, ask yourself this if you could create the perfect activity for your children, what sort of things would they learn while doing it? • What if they learn how to become more disciplined? (Maybe their school work would improve as a result?) • What if they learnt to be more self-confident? (Wouldn’t you feel better knowing your child could deal with pressure from their friends?) • What if they learn to have genuine respect for others, like parents and teachers? (Imagine that!) • What if they learn how to set goals and overcome obstacles to achieve them? (What if you had learned how to set and achieve goals when you were eight?)

ACTIVE LIVING GUIDE Boost Your Happiness & Health with Meditation
Tai Chi
Age: 16 years & older
Age: 19 years & older
Let go of the notion you can’t meditate because… Meditation is a means of transforming the mind. It is a practice; we learn and improve each time we try. Meditating can give you a sense of calm, peace and balance that benefits both your emotional wellbeing and your overall health. Each week we will explore a different meditation technique, so you can find one that resonates with you. Please bring a blanket and a cushion. Four weeks to cover the four main styles of meditation; Guided Meditation, Visualization, Scared Sound, Chanting Mantra, Pranayama, Breath Meditation, Mindfulness, Insights into Stillness.
Tai Chi is an ancient Chinese tradition that, today, is practiced as a graceful form of exercise. It involves a series of movements performed in a slow, focused manner and accompanied by deep breathing. It has been considered to be a form of ‘meditation in motion’ which promotes serenity and inner peace. Tai Chi can be easily adapted for anyone, from the fit to people confined to wheelchairs or recovering from surgery. Tai Chi has been proofed scientifically to increase muscle strength, balance, flexibility, Aerobic conditioning, bone density, heart disease, Parkinson disease, sleep, post stoke recovery, etc. 16543
