Adult Learn to Play Skate is aimed a people new to skating or people that have been away from the Rink for a while that want to get back into it. Our instructors will tailor the program to the participants levels that are registered.
Drop in and play anytime on the ice surface! This is a parent participation course and there will be several fun activities on the Rink for children and parents to partake in together.

Rec Skate instructors: Suzi Wiebe and Aubrey Palme The mother/daughter team of Suzi Wiebe and Aubrey Palme teach Rec skate at the Complex. Our goal is to offer a fun place to learn the basics of skating. This is Suzi’s 5th year and Aubrey’s 3rd year teaching the program. Both currently play hockey with the Ice Cats and Suzi is a coach with the Female Minor Hockey Program.

DROP-IN WATER FITNESS
REGISTERED WATER FITNESS
These classes are geared for adults or mature teens. Access is granted by scanning your membership card, or by paying a daily drop in admission. Classes will have various instructors unless otherwise noted.
Space is limited in these specialized classes for adults – register early to secure your spot. Buoyancy belts are provided for surface support in all deep-water classes.
Morning Aquacise – shallow water
Feel the freedom of exercising without impacting the ground. These classes provide a great core workout as you stabilize yourself while moving through deep water. Swim Kids Builder Ages: 7 – 12 years
No report cards – No pressure. This class is intended to build swim skills and endurance through activities and games, without formal evaluation. Ideal for students who feel comfortable in deep water but need a little stroke correction and endurance building. Great for kids who are swimming at a Red Cross level 4, 5 or 6. Kayak in the Pool Ages: Adult or family
Bring your own kayak to the pool on selected Sundays to practice your skills in a safe and warm environment. 4 kayaks will be permitted in each session. Please register at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation. Fee includes 1 Kayak and 1 Paddler for one session; regular admission rates would apply for additional paddlers sharing a kayak. Some projects take more time to complete. From Sea Otter up to Level 10, skills must be mastered as the building blocks for the next level. These charts show common challenges that bring kids back for more practice before moving to the next level

4 – 12 Orientation to water for babies between the ages of 4-12 months old, assisted by their parent/ months caregiver. To enter this level, babies must be able to hold their head up. This is a participation-based (with adult) level only, without formal evaluation. This is a great opportunity for parents and babies to learn how to have fun and stay safe in and around the water. 12 - 24 Orientation to water for toddlers aged 12-24 months with their parent/caregiver. Age is the only months condition for entering this level regardless of swimming experience. This is a participation-based (with adult) level only, without formal evaluation; a great way to discover water through play 2-3 years Orientation to water for toddlers between the ages of 2-3 years old, assisted by their parent/caregiver. SEA OTTER
3-6 years
Previous swimming experience is not required to enter Sea Otter; however, previous water play will help the swimmer have a more enjoyable experience. Toddlers must be 3 years old and are ideally toilet trained. Swimming skills are evaluated based on criteria and kids progress to the next level once all Sea Otter skills have been successfully demonstrated, such as general water comfort & submersion with breath control.
SALAMANDER
3-6 years
This level is packed with basic swim skills that are evaluated for completion; it is common for children to be working on this level for multiple sets of lessons to master basic kicking, back glides and roll over floats. If your swimmer was working on Salamander skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 1 Swim Kids
SUNFISH
3-6 years
To enroll in this level, swimmers must have successfully completed all Salamander skills or be recommended through an assessment. Skills to learn include a 5-metre distance swim and deepwater recovery with front/back/roll-over swims. If your swimmer was working on Sunfish skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.
CROCODILE
3-6 years
Swimmers enter this level after they have successfully mastered all Sunfish skills and are still under 6 years old (or be recommended through an assessment). Skills to learn include 10-metre distance swim and side glides. If your swimmer was working on Crocodile skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.
WHALE
3-6 years
Swimmers enter this level after they have successfully completed Crocodile and are still under 6 years old (or be recommended through an assessment). Skills to learn include a 15-metre distance swim and 10-metre side glides which prove to be challenging in Swim Kids Level 3. If your little swimmer was working on Whale skills but is now 6 years old, then register in Level 2 Swim Kids.

It’s not a fail if you need more time to practice the skill - some projects take more time to complete. Register for levels as recommended by an instructor. Free assessments can be arranged if you are not sure what level to register in.

PARTICIPANT REQUIREMENTS
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 1
This is the entry level for kids aged 6 years and up with little to no swimming experience. This level provides an orientation to the water and the pool. It introduces floats and glides, basic kicking and builds to a 5-metre swim with face in. Note, older children with no swimming experience may prefer private lessons until they are able to join group classes within a common age group.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 2
A second orientation level helping children build their skills for front and back swims. Swimmers are introduced to deep water activities and proper use of a Personal Flotation Devices (PFD). Endurance is built on basic flutter kicking, roll over glides and a 10-metre swim.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 3
This level provides an orientation to deep water, an introduction to front crawl, and a foundation for making wise choices on where and when to swim. Diving is introduced and children will work on various surface support techniques, side glides and 15-metre swim.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 4
The front crawl, back glide and shoulder roll for back crawl are further developed in this level. Swimmers work on kneeling dives, surface support and developing a greater sense of self-safety. Endurance is developed through a front/side combo drill and a 25-metre swim.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 5
Back crawl is introduced, along with sculling skills and whip kick on the back. Children try stride dives and receive an introduction to safe boating skills. Endurance is developed through the dolphin kick and a 50-metre swim. Front crawl breathing continues to be refined.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 6
Front and back crawl continue to be refined as the elementary backstroke is newly introduced. Children are also introduced to safety on ice, elementary rescue of others with throwing assists, treading water and the front dive. Endurance is built through a 75-metre swim, and increased distances for all strokes.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 7
Continue building skills and endurance for front crawl, back crawl and elementary back stroke. It also introduces whip kick on your front and kids learn about airway and breathing obstructions. Endurance is built through timed treading water, and a 150-metre swim.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 8
Introduction to breast stroke, foot first surface dives and rescue entries. Kids learn about the dangers of open water, hypothermia and perform rescue breathing on manikins for adult and child rescues. Endurance is built on the dolphin kick and a 300-metre swim, and increased distances for all strokes.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 9
Front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke and breaststroke continue to be refined. In this level children are encouraged to try combining different strokes and kicks for fitness. They also work on head-first shallow dives, standing dives and learn about wise choices, peer influences and self-rescue from ice. Endurance is built through a 400-metre swim.
SWIM KIDS LEVEL 10
Further refinement of strokes, with an introduction to butterfly and scissor kick as a warm-up/cool down stroke for fitness. Children learn about sun safety, rescue of others from the ice and head-first and feet-first shallow dives. Endurance is built using dolphin kick and butterfly drills and a 500-metre swim. This level concludes the Swim Kids program.

LEADERSHIP & FIRST AID TRAINING National Lifeguard Recertification For those whose lifeguard ticket is expiring soon or has already expired, take this Pool Option recertification. Practice and update session in the morning, recert in the afternoon. It is highly recommended that participants hold a current Standard First Aid with CPR-C. Other recommendations included reviewing first aid knowledge, and practicing NL physical standards such as egg beater, head up swims and carries/removals for unresponsive victims. Standard First Aid Ages: 15 and up
National Lifeguard
Comprehensive two-day course offering first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR-C) skills for those seeking a more in-depth understanding of first aid emergencies. This is a required course for National Lifeguard training. Certification valid for 3 years. 100% attendance required. Tue/Wed Aug 27 & 28 12:30am - 8:30pm $160
Prerequisites: Standard First Aid, Bronze Cross, and min. age 16 yrs This award builds on the skills, knowledge and values that the Lifesaving Society teaches in its Bronze Medal awards to develop the practical skills and knowledge required by lifeguards. Recognized as the standard measure of lifeguard performance in Canada, NL education is designed to develop a sound understanding of lifeguarding principles, good judgment, and a mature and responsible attitude toward the role of the lifeguard. Must have a current SFA with CPR-C from approved provider and Bronze Cross by first day of NL course. 100% attendance required for Certification. Bronze Star
Ages: 10 and up This optional program helps prepare 10-12 year old skilled swimmers for success in Bronze Medallion. Candidates are taught about how to make WaterSmart choices and learn basic lifesaving and resuscitation skills needed to be their own personal lifeguard. This program is 10 hours consisting of both dry and wet sessions and includes a 400-metre timed swim completed in 12 minutes or better. MEET OUR CERTIFIED TRAINERS Bianca Hoppe
Bianca Hoppe has a professional background in the medical field and is a certified BCRPA Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Third Age, Weight Training, Spin and Pilates instructor. She is also a certified Personal Trainer on land and in water. Bianca is fascinated by the human body and all its capabilities and the science that always discovers new and improved workouts to either get people in better shape, helps them to recover from injuries or improve their everyday mobility.
Gail Westgate
Gail Westgate; certified personal trainer. Gail has studied fitness theory, weight training and personal training for over a decade. Gail has focused on helping people achieve positive health and fitness changes that support their day to day life. She has learned from personal experience how to overcome fears and blocks and develop new skills that promote well being and accomplishment. Gail is especially adept at engaging with clients to realize important life style challenges and integrate new strengths and interests into their day to day life. Her good humour and positive attitude have inspired many people to make long lasting changes and gain confidence in their abilities. Gail is excited to offer personal training courses for the fall season and looks forward to working with her clients.

Aquatic Personal Training All sessions are 45 min.
The viscosity of water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need of weights. This program is especially useful for those with arthritis, healing fractured bones or who are overweight.

Follow-up Session $55 Clients can use the follow-up to get some input into their existing programs if they have been training for a few years. Follow-up session will not include a full new program but will include a progression of an original program or a substitution of some exercises that are more appropriate. Follow-up programs are also designed for people who would like a personal trainer to check their form, correct faulty movement patterns or have some input in their usual program to make it better.

Living a healthy Life with Chronic Pain Workshop & Activity Series Age: 19 & Older
This is a partnership program with the University of Victoria Chronic Pain Self-management Program. The is a six-week physical activity and workshop program that helps people with chronic pain to better manage their symptoms and their daily lives. The workshop provides information and teaches practical skills. It gives people the confidence and motivation they need to manage the challenges of living with chronic pain. Groups meet once a week for 3.5 hours. This gentle movement class using Classic/Folk music to inspire you provides a full body workout that will tone your body and improve your balance, energy, range of motion and mobility. This workout includes low impact aerobics, balance practice, agility drills, targeted strength/core work and stretching to give participants full-body training. FRESHWATER FISHING Freshwater fishing Powell River Ages: 13 and up
Join Corey Gordon, a sport fishing guide, teacher, and freshwater fishing enthusiast, for this action packed course. The primary learning outcome for this course is to teach participants multiple strategies for catching freshwater fish in Powell River. Target species of focus will be Cutthroat and Rainbow trout. This course will be broken up into 4 different 1.5 hour sessions. Session #1 – FOCUS: tackle and equipment. Students will be instructed on how, where and when to use various lure types including spoons, spinners, plugs, apex, flatfish, jigs, attractants and bait including worms and row. This session will also cover how, where and when to use various rod and reel types including spin cast, level wind and fly rods. Appropriate line, leader and basic knot choices will also be covered in this session.
Session #2 – FOCUS: fishing techniques including shore and boat
fishing. Subtopics will include spin casting, bobber fishing, jigging, trolling, down rigging. drifting and fly fishing. This session will also teach anglers how to identify optimal fishing locations, fish feeding patterns and behaviours, seasonal effects on fishing, and a basic overview of Powell River lakes and general freshwater fishing hotspots.
Session #3 (1 of 2) - Fly fishing supplemental. This session will be a general overview of freshwater fly fishing. Topics will include rods, reels, lines, backing, leaders and tipits. Also covered will be different ways to fish flies, including trolling and casting. This unit will also cover basic estuary fly fishing and locations in Powell River. Lastly, an overview of dynamic Powell River fly patterns will be shown and discussed.
Session #4 (2 of 2) – Basic Fly Tying. Students will be instructed on how to tie productive Powell River Fly patterns. Students will be taught how to select appropriate tying materials and use fly tying tools including a vice, bobbin, hackle pliers, and whip finish. Rabbit leaches, whooley buggers and minnow patterns will be the focus of this instruction. (ALL MATERIALS PROVIDED)

Originally constructed in 1927 by the Powell River Lumber Company, the Hall has a grand ballroom with dance floor, a Supper Room, a large kitchen and performance stage.
