Rec Skate
Rec skate is a 4 class set of beginner skate lessons that is intended to be a feeder program to both minor hockey and the Can Skate program. Helmets and skates will be made available. This program is specifically geared towards children who have no experience skating and need assistance with learning the FUNdamentals. If your child is already registered in minor hockey or Can Skate, then they will be too advanced for this class.

Learn to Skate Better Ages: 5-8
This program is a progression from our Rec Skate program. The focus of this class will be to develop basic striding and gliding on the ice as well as improving stopping. This is not a hockey development program and is intended for casual skaters. If your child is enrolled in minor hockey or Can Skate, this program is not intended for them. Spring 3 on 3 Hockey
The Spring 3 on 3 Hockey League will run for 8 weeks and take place 1 evening a week running from April 5th until the end of May. Registration Fee includes all 8 sessions along with a league jersey and wrap-up play the week of May 23rd. League Organizer will take the registrations and break them down into equal teams prior to the season starting. Please register by Thursday, March 31. Volunteer Coaches are the foundation of this league and are essential to its success, if you or someone you know would like to coach, please contact Sport & Recreation Program Coordinator Alex Craig at acraig@powellriver.ca Fee $109/skaters, $55/Goalies Games will take place between 5pm – 9:30pm and the schedule is dependent upon registration numbers.

Science is a great way to spark the imagination! Learn to Geocache Ages: 6 - 10
Geocaching is a great activity to enjoy while outdoors. Turn a simple walk in the trails into an adventurous treasure hunt! Our instructor will teach kids all the basics of navigating, finding clues, and logging finds! No cellphones will be required for this one day class. Two-Wheeled Wednesdays
During this 4 week program participants will explore nature through art, games and challenges. We will also be hiking the trails around the PR Recreation Center. Participants can expect to hone their nature ninja skills while learning about local flora and fauna, building shelters and having fun with new friends from around our region.
This action-packed program is for young people who would like to learn more about mountain biking. During this 4 week program participants will learn the basics of mountain biking while meeting new friends and exploring some of the trails in our region. Topics like trail safety and etiquette, bike mechanics and trail building will also be explored.

Babysitter's Training
Home Alone
The Babysitter's Training Course is aimed at young people turning 12 years of age within the calendar year or older who want to demonstrate their capabilities by completing the course under responsible direction. The Babysitter's Training Course is loaded with special features such as: Child Development and Behavioral Problems, Safety, Handling Emergencies, Games and Play Activities, Children with Special Needs, and more. Certification is included! Remember to pack a lunch!
The Home Alone Program is designed to provide children with the necessary skills and knowledge to be safe and responsible when home alone for short periods of time. This course will help children understand how to prevent problems, handle reallife situations, and keep them safe and constructively occupied.

REGISTERED COMMUNITY RECREATION PROGRAMS CHILDREN & YOUTH Aerial Circus Kids - Tuesdays Ages: 8 - 11
The class always starts with a group warm-up involving light cardio to produce heat in the body, followed by strengthening exercises and stretches. Aerial muscles are developed on the equipment by learning climbs, knots and a variety of poses in the air. Senior students will work together to develop ground and aerial routines for the beginner aerialists. Aerial Circus Teens & Performance Troupe - TUESDAYS and/or FRIDAYS Ages: 12 - 16
The focus for the Performance Troup will be towards creating aerial routines and building ensemble gound repertoire for upcoming shows. Teens not part of the performance troupe will continue building foundational aerial skills as well as participate in all ensemble ground based creation. REGISTERED COMMUNITY RECREATION PROGRAMS ADULT Aerial Circus Adult Beginner - Friday Ages: 16 and up
Participants require a high degree of physical fitness in order to climb, invert, and master technical movement on the various equipment. Equipment that is covered in this course is ropes, silks, hoop and trapeze. The class consists of rotations both in the air and on the ground that focus on strength, flexibility performance skills and creation. Aerial Circus Adult Intermediate TUESDAYS and/or FRIDAYS
Cyr Wheel Workshop
Ages: 16 and up

The Cyr Wheel is a circus acrobatic apparatus that consists of a single large ring made of aluminum or steel (covered with a PVC protective plastic). This workshop will consist of learning the basic acrobatic skills necessary for a safe and progressive development. Students will learn manipulation, interaction, wheel acceleration, spinning, wheel waltzes, and safe deceleration skills. Class will also focus on strength development needed to foster proficiency. This class is open to intermediate-level aerialists or based on a skills assessment. These classes will be a mix of building routines in the air as well as storytelling imagery through ground-based human architecture and movement. In one day you can make and take home your own classic Willow chair. Using Willow for bent shoots, Alder for the frame pieces, this a great first rustic building project. All tools and materials provided, no previous woodworking experience needed. Participants are welcome to bring a helper and need to bring a lunch. This is a full-day workshop, 9-5 Sunday April 24 OR Sunday May 29 from 9:00am - 5:00pm $300 Instructor: Andrew Kent Location: Poolside Room
Oyster Picking & Clam Digging Ages: 16 and up
Join John McDowell for a delightful and informative hands-on class. You'll meet first at the complex for a detailed discussion and video, then head out to the beach for picking, digging, and eating! We'll build a fire and cook a few with all the trimmings! Participants must have a valid tidal license. Bring gum boots, a bucket, a small container with lid, work gloves, a hand forked digging tool, and oyster shucker. Are you new to the weight room? Attend a one hour orientation session to familiarize yourself with our cardio and weight equipment and learn how to use them safely and effectively. Orientations will be schedules for groups of 4. If you are 15 years old, you must complete a weight room orientation prior to using the weight room without a supervising adult. Bianca Hoppe has a professional background in the medical field and is a certified BCRPA Group Fitness, Aquatic Fitness, Third Age, Weight Training, Spin and Pilates instructor. She is also a certified Personal Trainer on land and in water. Bianca is fascinated by the human body and all its capabilities and the science that always discovers new and improved workouts to either get people in better shape, helps them to recover from injuries or improve their everyday mobility. Gail Westgate has studied fitness theory, weight training and personal training for over a decade. Gail has focused on helping people achieve positive health and fitness changes that support their day to day life. She has learned from personal experience how to overcome fears and blocks and develop new skills that promote well being and accomplishment. Gail is especially adept at engaging with clients to realize important life style challenges and integrate new strengths and interest to their day to day life. Her good humour and positive attitude have inspired many people to make long lasting changes and gain confidence in their abilities.
Aquatic Personal Training Packages
All session are 45 minutes. The viscosity of the water provides an excellent source of resistance when incorporated into an Aquatic Personal Training Program. This resistance allows for muscle strengthening without the need of weights. This program is especially useful for those with arthritis, healing fractured bones, or who are overweight. Empowerment Self-Defence Youth Meet the Instructor
Emily McKee began studying wing chun kung-fu in 2007, while working in Taipei, Taiwan. She continued to train full time with her master, until she became a certified instructor in 2018. Since then, she has been teaching kung-fu and Empowerment Self Defence (with training in ESD from the National Women’s Martial Arts Federation), both in Taiwan and Canada and is excited to now be back in the community of Powell River for the foreseeable future.

This Empowerment Self-Defence course is specifically designed for young women (LGBTQ inclusive), ages 13-18. Over the six weeks, we will be discussing the spectrum of gender based violence and how to recognize and interrupt behaviors starting at the lower end of the continuum as a method of preventing violence. Students will learn techniques to increase their awareness and intuition skills; they will practice setting boundaries and saying no with assertive voice and body language through role plays and other verbal activities; finally, they will train in simple, yet efficient physical techniques and have fun tapping into their inherent power. Wuji Systems Kung Fu incorporates Shaolin Hung Gar and Omei systems that train the mind, body, and spirit. This class incorporates movement, forms, fun and focus. Lessons highlight discipline, self-respect and teamwork while working towards a yellow sash (or belt). This class is part one of a complete system of Kung Fu with six sashes (including black). No prior experience is need and all levels are welcome in this program. Ayron Howey has been practicing martial arts for over 30 years and has trained in many styles including Wushu, Xing Yi, Bagua, Sanshou, Iron Shirt Qi Gong, Da Pong Qi Gong, Judo, Ju Jitsu, Tae Kwon Do, Aikido, Thai Boxing, Hung Gar, Boxing, and Mixed Martial Arts. He works to incorporate all the elements of Chinese Wushu into his training and coaching sessions, training both body and mind. Participants will learn how to interrupt violence by listening to their intuition, assessing their options, asserting boundaries, using de-escalation strategies, and practicing a range of mental, verbal and physical responses to protect their emotional, physical and mental wellbeing. The Hearts in Motion Walking program is designed to encourage people to participate in regular physical activity by walking. Walking is a great way to boost health and energy and it's easily incorporated into any lifestyle. You can reduce risk factors such as stress, blood pressure, blood cholesterol, and body fat by incorporating thirty minutes of physical activity most days of the week. This fun and social program will help get participants moving in a relaxed environment with likeminded people. The program focuses on improving activities associated with daily living, strengthening muscles used day-today. Postnatal Fitness
Welcome to our new Prenatal Fitness program where you can experience the benefits of exercise during any trimester and meet other parents to be. Our certified prenatal instructor will lead you through safe cardiovascular training, flexibility, and mobility work as well as muscle strengthening and conditioning. It is recommended that participants consult with their health care provider before beginning a fitness program while pregnant.
This program will take you through cardiovascular exercise, muscular conditioning, flexibility and core work specifically for the postpartum body. Learn how to safely return to exercise, meet other new parents and bond with your baby through activity. All fitness levels are welcome. For safety reasons, please bring only pre-mobile babies.

Post Partum Connections Ages: 16 & up
This eight week program is designed to support parents by identifying personal triggers and stressors, such as adapting to parenting or adding a child to the family, exploring parenting expectations, relationship challenges, body image as well as shifts in identity. Participants will learn about early infant development and health, strengthen parent-baby connection, practice communication and problem solving, and build community and connections with other parents. Aikido is a martial art. Translated from Japanese; Aikido means the way of harmony. As a martial art, aikido seeks to neutralize an act of aggression without injuring the attacker. The practice of Aikido involves physical training that promotes strength, flexibility, balance, stamina, and an understanding of timing and distance. It also involves mental and spiritual training developing focus, selfdiscipline, and compassion. Aikido classes start with a 10-minute warm-up, followed by 50 minutes of exercises and self defence forms. Beginning participants need to be able to sit and get up from the floor, walk and copy basic instruction. Wuji Kung Fu - Xingyiquan 5 Element Fist Ages: 16+
Xingyiquan (Shing-yee-chew-awn) or ‘Form Intention Fist’ is an ancient system of martial arts based on the Wu Xing or 5 element theories. Beginners will learn stances, movement and fist attacks. This foundational class leads to further forms, weapons and partner drills.Considered an internal art, this style is more combative than Tai Chi but still focuses heavily on health, chi and well-being. No prior experience is need and all levels are welcome in this program. Christina Staley has taught Yoga for many years in Deep Cove at Maa Yoga studio and several studios in the lower mainland, instructing classes such as Restorative, Hatha, hot yoga, Flow & kids yoga workshops. Christina has offered mobile yoga classes to senior care homes, childcare centres and for corporate offices. She is now coming back to her roots of teaching and embarking on a new journey offering yoga for prenatal clientele where she can combine all her yoga training to help provide true wellness for the Mommas!

Let yourself destress and relax in a gentle yoga practice. Coax strength and flexibility from your body as you learn the benefits of alignment and mindfulness. Participants will use yoga blocks and chairs as they explore variations on familiar postures in a restorative practice.
Build strength, stability, endurance and flexibility with this regular yoga practice. Dedicate the hour to increasing your health and wellness through guided postures and breathing exercises. Feel the freedom in these zero impact classes that are scheduled as a series. Buoyancy belts are provided to help maintain surface support in deep water. These classes provide a great core workout as you stabilize yourself while performing various exercises. Bring your own kayak to the pool on selected days to practice your skills in a safe and warm environment. 4 kayaks will be permitted each session. Please register at least 48 hours in advance to avoid cancellation. Fee covers 1 kayak and 1 paddler for one day; regular admission rates apply to additional paddlers sharing a kayak. This is a WorkSafeBC Occupational Level 1 equivalent and can be used in the workplace. Through a blended learning of online tutorials plus hands-on training and practice, this 8-hour basic first aid course will give you the confidence to respond to respiration and circulation emergencies, including asthma, allergic reactions, heart attach, stroke and bleeding. Must complete online portion prior to classroom session.
