Keep your home safe from fire

Get ready for the hot summer months and keep your home and community safe from fire. All firewood, timber, petrol and kerosene need to be stored well away from your home.

As we head into summer the risk of fire increases significantly, but Mayor Tracey Roberts would like to remind City residents that there are some simple steps you can take to keep your home safe. Winter brings in the fallen leaves and debris, so now is the time to clean your gutters out, trim branches away from the house and ensure trees are not growing near buildings.

Remember, these precautions are just as important in the suburbs as they are in rural areas.

Install smoke detectors in your home and ensure they are in working order. This includes residents in suburbs such as Banksia Grove and Carramar.

Clear all vegetation, rubbish and flammable material away from the walls of your home as they may fuel a fire. A simple tip to remember is to create at 20 metre circle of safety around your home free from all these items. “The safety of our community is the City’s top priority, so I ask that everyone takes these precautions, which could make the difference between life and death during a fire emergency,” Mayor Roberts said.

PLEASE REMEMBER

• Water supply is not guaranteed during a bushfire

“I would like to thank the City’s volunteer brigades for their preparedness in the lead up to this bushfire season.

The controlled burning program carried out over the cooler months has put us in good stead as we approach summer”.

Residents living in or near bushland should prepare their property and also have a bushfire survival plan and emergency kit ready.

“The safety of our community is the City’s top priority, so I ask that everyone takes these precautions.”

• Power supply is not guaranteed during a bushfire

• Saving a life will be priority over saving a property so expect to be evacuated

• Once evacuated, access to affected areas may not be possible for several days

• Water bombing by aircraft cannot be guaranteed in a bushfire

Surf Life Saving beach safety tips Surf Life Saving WA have some great tips to help people stay safe whilst enjoying summer days at the beach. ALWAYS SWIM BETWEEN THE RED AND YELLOW FLAGS When you see red and yellow flags on a beach, it indicates that there is currently a lifesaving service operating on that beach. The lifeguards have chosen a section of the beach that is best for swimming and they will closely supervise this area. READ THE SAFETY SIGNS Before you go on to the beach be sure to read the safety signs.

This will ensure you are aware of any warnings or dangers on the beach. ASK A LIFEGUARD FOR SAFETY ADVICE Lifeguards are highly trained and very knowledgeable about beach safety and conditions. When you arrive at the beach look for and identify the lifeguards. SUPERVISE YOUR CHILD Adult supervision is required for young children at all times. Parents should always remain within arms reach of their child while in or around water.

SWIM WITH A FRIEND Swimming together means you can keep an eye out for each other, and if further assistance is required, one person could call or go for help. If you need help, stay calm and attract attention. If you are not feeling comfortable in the water and you require a lifeguard’s assistance to get back to shore, stay calm, raise your arm in the air and wave it from side to side. You should conserve your energy by floating on your back and staying calm. This will ensure you have the energy to remain afloat until further aid arrives.

REMEMBER TO ALWAYS SWIM AT PATROLLED BEACHES QUINNS BEACH Sundays 9am-1pm (Oct to Mar) Saturdays 9am-1pm (Nov to Mar) Monday to Friday 8am-1pm (Dec to Mar) YANCHEP LAGOON Monday to Saturday 9am-4pm (Dec to Mar) Sundays 9am-4pm (Dec to Mar) Friday to Monday 9am-4pm (April)

Always swim between the red and yellow flags. They indicate the supervised area of the beach and that a lifesaving service is operating.

Stay safe in your pool this summer Summer goes hand in hand with swimming so make sure you and your loved ones stay safe by following some important advice. POOL SAFETY Did you know the majority of young children who drown in Australia do so after falling into a backyard pool? All pool owners are responsible for ensuring that their pool fences and gates comply with Australian standards and that they function correctly at all times. Mayor Tracey Roberts asks that all pool owners in the City take action now to ensure their pools are safe. “Children are naturally curious and drawn to water,” Mayor Roberts said. “Pools which have poorly maintained fencing or gates which don’t self close can automatically put lives at risk.

“I urge all pool owners in the City to follow these simple safety steps and keep your children safe.” FENCE YOUR POOL The City of Wanneroo inspects your pool fences and gates every four years, however owners must ensure that fences and gates are well maintained and working correctly at all times. SUPERVISE YOUR CHILD Adult supervision is required for young children at all times. Parents should always remain within arms reach of their child while in or around water.

LEARN RESUSCITATION All pool owners should know first aid. Enrol in a course today and update your skills annually. For more information about your responsibilities as a pool owner, contact the City of Wanneroo Building Services on 9405 5000.

Mayor’s Christmas Appeal benefits community Christmas is a time for giving and the City of Wanneroo Mayor’s Christmas Appeal is no exception. Mayor Tracey Roberts said the appeal has helped bring Christmas cheer to many local families suffering financial hardship. “The Appeal has become a tradition for the City, with hundreds of residents, local businesses and community groups digging deep each year and providing food items, toys and gifts for local families in need,” Mayor Roberts said. “Donations will be given as Christmas hampers to families who are struggling

financially, and may not be able to afford to buy gifts for their children or put food on the table on Christmas Day.”

“It is wonderful to see the community caring for one another in such a way that really reflects our community spirit,” she said.

Any items not used in hampers will be given to emergency food agencies. Mayor Roberts said she was overwhelmed by the generosity of the Wanneroo community each year. Many people may not know that the City of Wanneroo is also home to our very own Santa Claus - Selwyn Anderson who handcrafts wooden toys which he donates to the appeal each year. Mayor Tracey Roberts spreading Christmas cheer.

City unites with churches to serve Christmas lunch A community lunch is being held on Christmas Day at the Wanneroo Showgrounds for residents in need of company on this special day. Sponsored by the City of Wanneroo and organised by the combined churches of the City, the event is open to anyone who may find themselves on their own on Christmas Day, or anyone who struggle to put a meal on the table for themselves or their family. Mayor Tracey Roberts said there are many people in the community who

may find themselves isolated on Christmas Day for a variety of reasons. “People may be new to the City having only recently moved here, their partners may be working away, or perhaps they simply have no family in Perth,” Mayor Roberts said. “Whatever the reason, we don’t want people to feel alone on Christmas Day, so please join us for a hot roast lunch, Christmas carols and enjoy the festivities.”

Wanneroo residents share their stories In an age where everyone is using technology to connect, some people still value the art of conversation and developing personal connections.

It is easy to forget the importance of connecting and sometimes people may feel isolated due to a loss of independence and this can negatively impact their wellbeing.

Sharing stories and capturing them in print was the aim of the MY LIFE MY WORDS project.

Everyone has a unique story to share and City of Wanneroo residents recently connected to share them.

“Hitler invaded Belgium, ending my carefree childhood, and my dad had to go into the army.

“Barbara was a dark haired beauty and as I saw her she was sitting amongst a group of young suitors.

I remember going to the station with my mum and waving goodbye. Little did we know we would not see my dad for 9 months.

During the evening I danced with Barb - we talked and I got to know her. I always felt she was too good for me that I was playing above my weight.

“We used to eat crabs all the time in Burma. One of the neighbours used to go fishing and told me that when he caught a crab he would toss it back as he did not know how to cook them.

When he came back he was not the same person. He was placed in a prison camp Stalag 1a in Koningsberg on the Russian border. My poor mum had a very tough time, I still do not know how she managed to feed the two of us.

I would often ride over after work to see Barb. I would catch the train to her village, where Barb would meet me at the station. She was notoriously late on many occasions.

The first time my neighbour bought some crabs over I wasn’t at home. In those early days in Bayswater people never locked their doors, so he just left them in my sink.

On our first date, I waited patiently, leaning on the lamppost. When Barb arrived I burst into a rendition of, I’m leaning of the lamppost by George Formby.”

When I arrived home from work I was greeted by a very big crab caught on the fly screen door. Glimpsing it I started to scream! The neighbours came running. When they saw what is was they said well you asked for crabs so you got crabs!”

I was sent to stay with my Aunty Alice in the country for a while.”

After comprehensive training, volunteer biographers had 10 one-hour sessions with each of the 19 storytellers to record their stories and create hardcopy biographies that included photos, artwork and other mementos. Here are some excerpts from some of the storytellers’ biographies:

I said, bring them to me I will show you how to cook them!

Feel at home at the Hainsworth Centre If it has been a while since you’ve visited the Hainsworth Centre in Girrawheen, pop in and check out the many changes that have occurred. The Centre is noticeably more welcoming and lively, thanks to placemaking strategies that took place in response to community feedback. External areas have been transformed, with a community herb garden now thriving in the courtyard, as well as an alfresco area with cafe style tables and chairs, the perfect place to relax or socialise. Landscaping works have also taken place in order to create new areas that can be used for more community activities such as gardening, play areas for children and a community art project. In March, a new ‘Book Nook’ and ‘Little Free Library’ were officially opened. The latter is a small mobile collection of books that can be moved in or around the Centre and is one of only two official Little Free Libraries in WA, 13 across Australia and thousands around the world. Mayor Tracey Roberts said it was wonderful to see the changes that have taken place. “It has certainly livened up what was a tired building, and I hope the residents of Girrawheen and surrounding suburbs check it out for themselves and make the most of this new community hub,” she said.

Mayor Tracey Roberts enjoying the Hainsworth Centre’s Book Nook with south ward councillors Hugh Nguyen, Anh Truong, Domenic Zappa, Denis Hayden and Brett Treby.

Placemaking is a multi-faceted approach to the planning, design and management of public spaces, by looking at, listening to, and asking questions of the people who live, work and play in a particular space to discover their needs and aspirations. The Hainsworth Centre is not the only City of Wanneroo building to take on the placemaking strategies, with Butler, Yanchep and Banksia Grove community centres currently applying the principles. The Wanneroo Town Centre will soon be commencing its action plan which in essence will have a placemaking approach.

“Placemaking capitalises on a local community’s assets, inspiration, and potential,” Mayor Roberts said. “We are all about creating good public spaces that promote people’s health, happiness, and well being.” All of the City’s placemaking locations apply the four common themes of sociability, users and activities, access and linkages and comfort and image. Some common themes across the locations include access to walking groups, early childhood activities, physical activity sessions and art based programs. To discover what activities are happening in your suburb, visit our website.

City of Wanneroo Art Awards Western Australian artists are invited to enter works and be in the running for over $16,800 in prize money. Categories include painting, sculpture and works on paper.

Please visit wanneroo.wa.gov.au or contact 9405 5920 for further details. Entry is $25 and entries close 4pm, Wednesday 25 March 2015.

With more than 35 per cent of City of Wanneroo residents born outside Australia, it’s not surprising that citizenship ceremonies are a regular sight at the City’s Civic Centre. Each month the City hosts ceremonies for residents born outside Australia who want to make the Australian Citizenship Pledge. Of City residents born outside Australia, the largest proportion, 16.9 per cent, are born in the United Kingdom. UK-born Joanne Raven became an Australian citizen recently with her husband, three children and a childhood friend from the UK. “We originally came to South Australia, but then we tried Western Australia. We drove all over, from Busselton but ended in the Wanneroo area. It just felt right.

“There are lots of English people here and people going on the same emotional relocation rollercoaster so it was easy to make friends and build relationships,” Mrs Raven said.

“This is one of my favourite events because it provides an opportunity to officially welcome new citizens and celebrate an important milestone in their lives.”

On Australia Day 2015, the City will host the first citizenship ceremony of the year. Mayor Roberts said the iconic day was favoured by many future citizens and was a special day on the City’s calendar.

In 2014, the City hosted Australia’s largest citizenship ceremony on Australia Day, with more than 750 people from around the world becoming citizens.

“The Australia Day Ceremony is always our biggest and it is a very special and emotional ceremony,” Mayor Roberts said.

The Australia Day 2015 ceremony will be hosted at Wanneroo Showgrounds and new citizens and their guests will be treated to a morning of Australian entertainment.

Tilting at Windmills Tilting at Windmills is a collection of sculptural works by artist Denise Brown which navigate the choppy waters of communication from multiple perspectives. It explores issues many people face arising from roaming technology, language difficulties, inadequate education or personality attributes. The concept behind this body of work is concerned with the emotional and psychological effect of communication difficulties and the manner in which individuals and groups react when confronted with a person with whom they are having difficulty communicating in a socially expectable way. Whether it be synaptic, as in the disorder of Dyslexia, or emigrational, such as being confronted with a different language to that which you have as your first. Brown’s work operates successfully on a number of levels. It connects to wider contemporary art practices and can be linked to issues like dyslexia and literacy.
