Fifty years on Andy and Johanna Heerkens decided to change their life in 1964 and move to Wanneroo from Katanning, after leaving their hometown of Tilburg in the Netherlands five years earlier. A plant mechanic by trade, Mr Heerkens decided to apply for a job with the Wanneroo Shire and once accepted, they made the move which would see them find a home for the rest of their lives. Along with their three children, the Heerkens’ lived at Jack Neville’s old home staying for nine months, now known as the historical Buckingham House, whilst the Shire built a house specifically for them at the Ashby Depot, where they then stayed for 10 years and grew their family by two more. “I applied for a job at the Shire, they came and picked us up in a tip truck and we arrived in Wanneroo at Buckingham House at 11.30pm at night,” Mr Heerkens said.

Andy and Johanna Heerkens. (Inset) Mayor Roberts with Andy receiving a 2013 Volunteer Excellence Award.

The new pioneers remember Wanneroo being a vast area with only a few necessities nearby, the town site consisting only of Villanova’s Deli, the Forestry Department, the old school, St Anthony’s Church, the country club and the Shire office that had around six staff. “There was nothing here at all, there was one single road from here to Lancelin and the nearest shop was in Nollamara,” Mr Heerkens retells. “It was so beautiful in the day time, I can remember and thought ‘oh I’m so glad I’m here’, it really feels like

home with the sun shining,” Mrs Heerkens added. The weekends brought about fun in Wanneroo, with many visits to the country club for meals and dancing or heading further north for fun in the sun. “If it was hot we went to Yanchep for a swim, those days they had the Atlantis so we would take the kids there on the weekends,” Mr Heerkens said. Much like today, old Wanneroo was a time where everyone worked together. Mr Heerkens was a volunteer fire brigade member, an ambulance

driver for the St John’s Brigade for 11 years, was part of the Wanneroo Lions Club for 29 years and is still a volunteer bus driver in the City two days a week.

“I’m so glad i’m here, it really feels like home.” After 50 years, the Heerkens’ are now recognised as City of Wanneroo Pioneers and are happy to be living here, noting it’s always been a lovely place to live, they’ve felt welcome since they arrived and their children have also stayed and made Wanneroo home.

Protecting these species is the number one priority for the conservation team at the City, who work assiduously to ensure everything possible is done to protect endangered species such as the Carnaby’s Cockatoo, graceful sun moth, bandicoots and wallabies.

The conservation team is also committed to teaching the future generation just how important protecting and conserving our environment is by running educational programs such as Adopt a Bushland.

“A big focus for the whole of Perth is the Carnaby’s Cockatoo,” said Conservation Maintenance Officer Marie Pudelek. “Their main food source is the banksias, so with all our rehabilitation and our revegetation work it’s

“It’s the same with the bandicoots, we put back plants that will provide them with cover and protection.”

Did you know the City provides an immunisation service to the public though clinics held at Merriwa and Wanneroo? Immunisation is the safest and most effective way of giving protection against 04
