Your Move project 08

Mayor’s Message Welcome to the autumn issue of What’s Happening magazine. In January, the City was proud to host the country’s biggest Australia Day citizenship ceremony. Some 619 City residents took the pledge to become Australian citizens in front of family and friends - a very special day for all.

I also had the pleasure of presenting the 2015 Australia Day Awards to some special City residents. (pg4) Healthy living is a personal passion of mine and over the next few months the City will offer residents a host of health focused initiatives, including the new Your Move project. Your Move is a free, personalised lifestyle program to support our community in becoming more active, healthy and

connected. I encourage you all to get involved. (pg8) Also in this issue is a new regular feature for Seniors - Ageing well in Wanneroo. Here you will find out what services and activities are available for our City’s seniors. (pg9) Finally, the recent summer months saw our Fire Services teams tackling a number of blazes throughout the City. I would like to extend my sincere thanks to our

volunteer fire brigades, Department of Fire and Emergency Services and all of the other support teams who played an invaluable role in keeping our community safe. Please remember that bushfires are not limited to summer and I ask that everyone continues to remain vigilant about fire risks and ensure you always have a fire plan in place. Mayor Tracey Roberts JP

City has ‘everything you need’ according to residents Residents are satisfied with services provided by the City of Wanneroo according to an independent survey recently commissioned by the City. When compared to other Local Governments, the City’s overall performance was above the industry average with 86 per cent of residents satisfied with its performance and 90 per cent happy to live in the City. Growing satisfaction with community safety, security, community information, customer service, events, services and facilities is helping make residents happy to live in the City, with one participant saying the City had “everything they needed”.

City of Wanneroo Mayor Tracey Roberts said the survey was designed to provide insights into residents’ needs and results would assist the City in providing the best services for the community. “People have always loved the natural assets, but the overwhelming message from this survey is they also value the facilities, services and cultural activities,” she said.

Surveys were carried out by CATALYSE in October 2014. Residents and businesses were surveyed by phone by the ECU Survey Research Centre.

Easter Closures The City of Wanneroo will have limited operational hours over the Easter and Anzac Day period. Visit our website for a complete timetable of closures.

90 per cent of residents are happy to live in the City of Wanneroo.

BUCKINHAM HOUSE VOLUNTEER GROUP The Buckingham House Volunteer Group was presented with the City of Wanneroo Australia Day Community Award, for an outstanding local community group or event. Each week during the school term, the group volunteers at one of our historical landmarks - Buckingham House, allowing an educational program to be available to local school students from around 20 schools each term. The members voluntarily share their knowledge of the City’s heritage, making learning fun. Without their commitment this important education program would not be able to run.

Keep your home and community safe from fire As we move into autumn, it is important not to become complacent about the dangers of bushfires. Typically, Western Australia’s bushfire season runs from November to April. If you live near any type of bush or nature reserve, fire is still a risk to you and your family. The City of Wanneroo Volunteer Fire Fighters work year round to ensure fire breaks are installed and this work certainly facilitated the containment of both fires. The City completed 680 hectares of controlled burning over the past 12 months. This significantly reduced the fire risk to the community.

PLEASE REMEMBER

At the start of this bushfire season the City’s rangers issued 148 non-compliant firebreak notices for inadequate or no firebreaks. This figure has increased significantly from previous seasons and is a worrying statistic because preparation is the key to your survival.

The recent bushfires within the City provide a timely reminder for you to prepare or refer to your bushfire plans. A plan will help you take action and avoid making last minute decisions that could prove deadly during a bushfire. For examples and checklists download Prepare. Act. Survive from www.dfes.wa.gov.au Prepare. Act. Survive also contains plenty of advice on how to prepare your home from reducing fuel loads to preparing your pets and livestock. You and your family’s survival depend on the decisions you make and how you act. Be prepared and have a plan. During bushfire evacuations the City accepts domestic pets at the Animal Care Centre at 1204 Wanneroo Road, Ashby.

If necessary, the City will also provide a safer place for residents and depending on the location of the fire will open one of its relocation centres. You can also join a bushfire ready group, a community action program that encourages local residents to work together to prepare and protect their families and properties against bushfires. For further information about Bushfire Ready or to form a group in your area call Department of Fire and Emergency Services’ community engagement area on 9395 9816 or email CommunitySafetyResources@ dfes.wa.gov.au During bushfire emergencies, keep up to date: www.dfes.wa.gov.au or call 13 3337, follow DFES on Twitter @dfes_wa, listen to ABC local radio, 6PR or news bulletins.

• Water supply is not guaranteed during a bushfire • Power supply is not guaranteed during a bushfire • Saving a life will be priority over saving a property so expect to be evacuated • Once evacuated, access to affected areas may not be possible for several days • Water bombing by aircraft cannot be guaranteed in a bushfire • SMS warnings are advice only and may not be timely IN THE CASE OF A LIFE THREATENING EMERGENCY, CONTACT 000

City urges residents to report graffiti

In the past two years there were 5,955 incidents of graffiti cleaned up by the City, costing $362,650. Mayor Tracey Roberts said there are less instances of graffiti now however, it still costs the community far too much.

“It is unacceptable that almost $200,000 each year is going towards something so unnecessary such as the cleanup of graffiti,” she said. “Graffiti on our public property is vandalism, and should not be tolerated. “I urge anyone who witnesses suspicious behaviour to report it to police immediately by calling 131 444.”

Protecting our beautiful natural environment The City of Wanneroo is committed to the conservation and maintenance of its pristine natural environment.

“Introduced fish can have a major flow on effect for species above and below in the food chain and can affect water quality,” Marie said.

The City works hard to conserve and maintain our natural areas and also works closely with external agencies including the Department of Parks and Wildlife, Department of Water, Department of Fisheries, Edith Cowan University, City of Joondalup and Friends of Yellagonga to conserve native ecosystems.

“Both fish species are likely to have been introduced into the lakes by people. We urge people to not dump their unwanted fish into lakes and rivers. Instead your local aquarium store may be able to take them or the RSPCA has guidelines on how to humanely dispose of unwanted fish.”

City Conservation Officer, Marie Pudelek said the City had been working closely with Friends of Yellagonga to preserve the wetlands in the City, with particular focus on removing introduced fauna. “The City was made aware that Koi Carp had been introduced into the Lakes at Studmaster Park by Friends of Yellagonga and we have also been alerted to the introduction of the Pearl Cichlid at Tuscan Lake in Gnangara,” she said.

The City has also been working closely with members of the community and Friends of Yellagonga to protect native fauna including the beautiful Rainbow Bee Eater and Oblong Turtles. Rainbow Bee Eaters visit Lake Joondalup seasonally to breed. The birds burrow into semi sandy areas and form chambers underground to lay their eggs and raise their young. These areas have been fenced off. At Lake Joondalup, Friends of Yellagonga, with the City, have a joint project to promote turtle breeding.

This involves the removal of grass and fencing off of the area. This winter, both the City and Friends of Yellagonga will be planting endemic plants to rehabilitate the area. Friends of Yellagonga will be observing the turtles during their breeding season and will place buried plates over the nest to protect them from foxes. “We are committed to promoting and protecting our natural environment so you can enjoy its beauty. However, we need help from the public too. We ask you and your pets to keep out of the fenced off areas and adhere to signs.”

We are committed to protecting our natural environment

The City of Wanneroo is a young and vibrant City, with almost 27,000 children aged eight or under. That makes up almost 15 per cent of the City’s population and this is predicted to grow to more than 40,000 children by 2025. We are committed to providing support to families and communities to ensure young children are given the best possible chance to learn, develop and achieve good mental and physical health. These efforts were recognised recently when the City was named the overall metropolitan winner of the Public Health Advocacy Institute of WA’s Local Government Children’s

YOUTHSERVICES

The City’s Early Childhood Strategy and Public Health Plan, coupled with its great places for children to play and learn, were integral to the City being honoured with this award. By committing to Public Health Planning as a local government, we have identified key actions to prevent or minimise our public health risks. We have also enabled people living in our communities to achieve maximum health and wellbeing. To view the City’s Early Childhood Strategy and Public Health Plan, visit our website.

A Camera on Gallipoli

Wanneroo and the Great War

THE PHOTOGRAPHS OF CHARLES RYAN A Camera on Gallipoli features the photographs taken by Sir Charles Ryan during his service on the peninsula. These images capture the daily routine of life between the battles, in the dry, forbidding landscape, in the trenches, the squalid dug-outs, and the horrendous task of burying the dead. Here, in Ryan’s display of mateship, stoicism and dogged endurance, is the spirit of Anzac.

This exhibition illustrates life in the area encompassed by the Wanneroo Road Board before, during and after the Great War of 1914-18. The service and sacrifice of those from the district who served in the Australian Imperial Forces, and the service and sacrifice of those who served on the Home Front, is acknowledged in this exhibition. This exhibition will be running alongside A Camera on Gallipoi.
