Easter Road Safety Mayor Tracey Roberts is urging road users to take extra care over the Easter break. “Easter is traditionally one of the busiest times on our roads, with people making the most of the extra long weekend and the combination of the school holidays,” Mayor Roberts said.

Easter Closures

“It is vital that all road users take responsibility and drive with care - stick to the speed limit, wear a seatbelt, take regular breaks when driving long distances and don’t drink and drive.” The City of Wanneroo will host its annual Blessing of the Roads ceremony prior to the Easter long weekend to promote road safety.

With the Easter break fast approaching, the City would like to inform residents of its waste collections and closures during the period. All waste collections scheduled for Good Friday (18 April) will be collected on Saturday 19 April. Waste collections will take place as per usual on Easter Monday (21 April) and ANZAC day (25 April). Pride of Wanneroo and Australia Outstanding community members were honoured for their contributions within the City of Wanneroo by being presented with Australia Day awards at the 26 January citizenship ceremony. Mayor Tracey Roberts was joined by Premier Colin Barnett to present the awards, at what was the largest ceremony on Australia Day in the country. The Charles Searson Australia Day Youth Award, for a person under the age of 25 who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community, went to Cara Darch.

Her dedication to the Landsdale Primary School community has been evident through roles varying from project coordinator for the Harmony Day Global

Cara also highlighted the school’s focus on sustainable living, regularly helping out by looking after the chickens and helping to revegetate the lake at Warradale Reserve. She is also passionate about social justice issues, making a difference in the wider community by raising funds for the Riding for Disabled Association. The Australia Day Individual Award, for a person over the age of 25 who has made an outstanding contribution to the local community, was awarded to Sue McDonald. Volunteering for some 36 years, there is no questioning Sue’s selflessness, as she was nominated for her tireless work with not one - but two - very different community groups.

Involved with the Lions for the past 10 years, she has helped a countless number of people, as well as working diligently with Assistance Dogs Australia, generously giving her time to increase awareness of the charity.

City rescue board donation boosts safety The City of Wanneroo has made a vital donation to the Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club that will aid future rescue operations. The City purchased two new fibreglass rescue boards for the small self funded club, which patrols Yanchep Beach Lagoon on Sunday mornings throughout summer. Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club president John Heesters said the club only had two boards, so the additions were “An absolute necessity”. “We are desperate for the new boards,” Mr Heesters said. “It will allow us to carry out rescue operations a lot more efficiently - they are fast and have a pointier nose, so they have the ability to push through the surf really well.” Mr Heesters said the surf club and the City of Wanneroo had a long term partnership, with the City donating a rescue boat and medical equipment in previous years. Mayor Tracey Roberts said she was delighted to support Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club on an ongoing basis. While children make up the majority of the club’s 110 person membership, beach patrols are shared amongst eight patrolling members, so more volunteers would also be gratefully welcomed.

North ward Councillor Norman Hewer with members of the Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club.

Anyone wanting to join can make contact through mybeach.com.au or via the club’s Facebook page. With beach patrols set to continue at Yanchep Beach Lagoon until the end of March, Mr Heesters had this advice for swimmers. “Always swim between the flags,” he said. “And if you are not sure

about anything at all, come and ask us. Don’t be frightened to approach a lifesaver or lifeguard, we are there to help.” Yanchep Lagoon Beach is patrolled by Yanchep Surf Life Saving Club on Sundays from 8am-noon until the end of March.

Two Rocks/Yanchep Assistance Cancer Travel After being diagnosed with breast cancer three years ago, Yanchep resident Sue Dash began radiation treatments five days a week at Sir Charles Gairdner Hospital. She soon realised there was no travel help available for cancer patients living in the Yanchep/Two Rocks area as it falls in a grey zone - not covered by the Cancer Council’s metropolitan travel service and is 25km short of the rural health services’ travel subsidy. “There’s no other cancer support close to us... we have a lot of members of our community that unfortunately have a very nasty diagnosis and need all the support they can,” Sue said. This is when Sue decided to start the Two Rocks Yanchep Assistance Cancer 08

Travel (TRYACT), an organisation run by volunteers and the support of fundraising, donations and grants to subsidise travel costs for local cancer patients. “I can see this growing tremendously, we have a very large aged care population... we’ve got young kids as well in various stages of cancer and their parents and their carers also need support.” Since its inception, TRYACT has grown with the help of the Cancer Council to also become a cancer support group. “We now use the local Capricorn Community House as a contact number for anyone enquiring about the group, wanting to become a member, information about our launch and last week we had four calls for the travel side of things.” city of wanneroo

TRYACT were successful in securing funding from the City of Wanneroo in the October 2013 round, giving them $1,000 towards their launch event, bringing further awareness to the organisation. “Without that money we wouldn’t have been able to put the ‘fun’ in the launch party, it could have all turned serious and I wanted to keep it light hearted and didn’t want people to be afraid of it,” Sue said. “I’m hoping this encourages people to feel safe with jumping on board. We want to make community members aware of what is available... My community helped me, this is the least I could do.”

City secures equitable water provision for all “It means that not only will depletion of water in the local wetlands be addressed, but also that current and future communities will not be disadvantaged by a lack of irrigated public open space and sporting facilities.”

Minister for Water, Mia Davies MLA and Mayor Roberts enjoying the water wise playground in Alkimos.

Current and future residents of the City of Wanneroo will benefit from the City’s water-wise planning and vision, with a new Water Supply Strategy set to ensure future distribution of water resources is equitable and sustainable.

In July 2012, the City approached the Minister for Water and the Department of Water to address its concerns with the proposed allocation of groundwater in the City’s Northern Coastal Growth Corridor.

The Water Supply Strategy, which was recently announced by the Minister for Water, Mia Davies MLA, and the Department of Water, outlines the future use of local groundwater for the Northern Coastal Growth Corridor.

Of particular concern was the inequity of licenses granted on a “first come” basis, rather than being based on the ongoing, future needs of the expanding region.

“It is great to see the State Government and Department of Water embrace the City’s concerns and work with us to plan for the future,” Mayor Tracey Roberts said. “Sustainable use of our natural water resources is a subject that should be close to everyone’s hearts,” she said. “As a City, Wanneroo is aware of the need to balance the ecological impact of depleting groundwater on our wetlands with the growing need for water in residential areas as the City expands.”

Since then, the City has worked in collaboration with the Department of Water to create a water strategy that will ensure a sufficient volume of shallow groundwater is available to support residential growth, while maintaining the social and environmental values of local wetlands. Mayor Roberts said the Water Supply Strategy, which was the result of 18 months planning and consultation, is a significant achievement for the City, residents and visitors to the region.

The Strategy involves the Department of Water reassessing how water licenses are allocated and ensuring developers apply strategic, innovative water-wise approaches to future developments which may include reducing turf surfaces and limiting irrigation. The City will also review its planning policies and design principles to ensure water-wise landscape planning is a key consideration of public open spaces, major road verges and median strips. Public open spaces will now be irrigated dependent on their use, with active, sporting areas receiving a higher amount of water than passive zones. Future parks and existing, refurbished parks will also incorporate natural landscaping, play areas and plants to ensure water use is waterwise, efficient and effective. Median strips in the growing northern corridor will also incorporate natural landscapes and plantings, allowing the City to reduce its water use and limit irrigation. The City is committed to seeking a sustainable future for the Gnangara Groundwater System and will work with the Department of Water on an ongoing basis to implement the Strategy.

Public Health Plan launched Making healthier choices easier and more accessible will lead to a fitter and happier community. Mayor Roberts proudly launched the City of Wanneroo’s long-awaited Public Health Plan to an audience of State MPs and leading health advocates from government and the broader community. The three year plan provides a framework to improve the health of the local community, with key actions identified to prevent and minimise public health risks. The plan will help people living in the community to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.

Mayor Roberts said she was proud that the City’s plan was already being identified by other local governments as a model for what they were hoping to achieve. “We will provide opportunities for healthy living and physical activity, creating environments where the healthy choice is the easier choice, and we will work to prevent harm from alcohol and other drugs,” she said. “Encouraging and enabling our residents to lead healthy lives is an immense challenge for all levels of government, but this plan is our chance to deliver.”

Deputy Mayor Dot Newton and Cr Frank Cvitan at the Public Health Plan launch.

Inclusive of all people within the City, the Public Health Plan will outline how to implement strategies to promote mental health and social wellbeing, as well as identify ways to create more liveable and walkable communities.

Contemporary technology and Victorian styling will collide in spectacular fashion during The Antipodean Steampunk Show. If today’s technology had been introduced in the 19th century, what would the world look like? The Antipodean Steampunk Show attempts to answer this question in a fascinating mash-up of past, future, and fantasy. Today’s production lines are inevitably tomorrow’s landfill. The Steampunk movement rails against this mentality by using elaborate craftsmanship to transform mass produced - and easily discarded - contemporary products into unique objects of desire. The dynamic works to be exhibited during The Antipodean Steampunk Show include jewellery, shoes, time machines, ray guns, photography and music players, all modified to reflect 19th century aesthetics. Friday 21 March to Wednesday 16 April 2014 Tuesday to Friday 10am-4pm weekends 12pm-4pm Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre FREE, enquiries 9405 5914 GUIDED TOUR- Take a FREE guided walk through the Antipodean Steampunk Show.

Serving your country - A century of service 1914-2014 Wanneroo Regional Museum’s ‘Serving Your Country’ project will honour not only the original ANZACs who served in World War One, but also recognise the contribution of all Wanneroo’s servicemen and women over the last century.

August 2014 marks 100 years since the commencement of World War One. Across the world the ANZAC Centenary will be marked by millions of people at a personal, community and national level. Through a series of projects, events and exhibitions over the commemoration period, the City of Wanneroo community will have the opportunity to contribute, share and learn about the stories of those who served at home and overseas.

The Museum is seeking information about residents who have: • Served in any international conflict or peacekeeping mission in any capacity • Were ‘manpowered’ to serve in essential services on the home front • Served another country in any conflict or peacekeeping mission but now call Wanneroo home • Experienced internment or prejudice as a foreign national in Australia during any conflict period To contribute to this project please contact the Museum 9405 5920 or visit us in the Wanneroo Library and Cultural Centre.
