Neighbourhood Safety Working together as a community can improve both personal safety and household security. There are some simple things to remember to help secure your house. Install motion sensor lighting and consider putting up fences or other barriers, such as garage doors at either side of your home. Mayor Tracey Roberts discusses safety with City of Wanneroo Rangers.
Back up standard key locks with a security lock on
your doors and ensure your windows are just as secure. Key operated locks provide a much greater level of security than manufacturer fitted catches. Have security screens fitted to the doors or portion of the windows that are left open for ventilation. Get to know your neighbours, that way you can all look out for each other and prevent intruders or burglaries.
Hester Avenue upgrade nears completion Northern suburbs residents will benefit from the completion of Wanneroo’s road works to improve the Hester Avenue link with Wanneroo Road at Neerabup. “I welcome the completion of these important road works,” said Mayor Tracey Roberts, “residents have been waiting for a long time and it is great to see this major upgrade, from both a traffic congestion and safety perspective. “These improvements will make travelling for the community both quicker and safer.” Funded by Federal Black Spot funding, the City of Wanneroo completed its part of the $635,000 project in February.

She develops teaching programs and runs the unit.
Katie Napier has shown incredible leadership qualities in the community and at Clarkson Community High School.
As an active member of the Quinns Rocks volunteer bush fire brigade, Katie attends monthly meetings and training in addition to on-call duties.
She is a junior cadet leader of St John’s and volunteers for a variety of events where first aid support is required as well as being a key provider of first aid education to young people through the cadet leader program.

The Wanneroo Men’s Shed provides opportunity for semi-retired and retired men to learn new skills and interact socially through a computer refurbishment program.
As well as giving male residents a chance to develop these skills, it also has a far greater good.

On 1 December 2012 the Wanneroo Community Men’s Shed Inc, in partnership with the City of Wanneroo, launched the new Community Computer Room in the Yanchep/Two Rocks Library.
Six computers, printing and internet access is available for use at a low cost to community members, visitors and library members.

Our four-legged friends often find their way out of enclosures with Rangers coming across many stray dogs during their regular patrols.
Dogs are taken to the Animal Care Centre in Ashby for safe keeping, with their photo posted on the City’s website. Over 95% of animals are either returned to their owners or re-homed.
If your dog is found by one of our Rangers and is wearing a current Council registration tag, the City will contact you, or give them a call during the day on 9405 5000 or 1300 138 393 after hours.

Safer streets for our children Traffic around schools at peak times can often be chaotic, so it’s extremely important to take extra care when parking and dropping off your children.
:: Plan to arrive at the right time - lingering cars can cause congestion and traffic problems, try to aim for outside peak times.
Follow these ideas on what you can do to make streets safer around schools when parking.
:: Park on the school side of the road - this avoids young children having to cross the street.
:: Be aware and courteous of children, pedestrians and other drivers at all times.
:: Be a ‘perfect parker’ park correctly in a space to avoid vision issues and increase traffic flow.
:: Use Kiss and Drive zones for quick drop offs or pickups when available. :: Pay attention to signs parking in a No Parking or No Stopping zone can be extremely dangerous to students and residents in the area and fines do apply.
:: Talk to teachers teachers can educate students and parents alike about taking care when entering and leaving school grounds :: Reduce speed - keep speed to a minimum and follow the 40km/hr signs at all designated times. :: Don’t block driveways, park on footpaths, get frustrated or obstruct children’s crossings.

Money available via the City’s community funding Are you a not-for-profit, incorporated community organisation wanting to hold a community event, activity or project? The City of Wanneroo receives applications bi-annually from those interested in applying for the Community Funding Program. Check out some of our recent success stories. Royal Australian Airforce Association (WA Division) received $2,000 in the October 2012 funding round to provide two commemorative services, one on ANZAC Day and the other for Remembrance Day. 08
PEP Community Services received $887 for the Scoop the Poop project from March 2013 to March 2014 at Brampton Park, Butler and Jindalee and Jindalee foreshore. Scoop the Poop days will be held to educate local residents about the need for keeping their environment clean, providing fun inclusive activities that inspire residents to clean up after their pets and to enable the local community to keep their common areas beautiful.
Wanneroo and Districts Historical Society received $627 to produce a Wanneroo and Districts Historical Society Brochure. The brochure will advertise activities of the Wanneroo and Districts Historical Society to encourage community interest and increase membership and participation in the Society’s activities. Children in Action Inc. Received $500 to provide an Easter Camp for children aged 9-14 to get away from some difficult family situations for four days and build positive relations.

Big hearted Mick empowers the next generation A day in the life of a City of Wanneroo youth worker is not your typical one. There are no set times when young people may need help, or just want someone to talk to. Youth Outreach Worker, Mick Leeming knows it all too well and loves the diversity youth work offers. “I do half admin, half out on the street, we can go anywhere from Girrawheen to Two Rocks. When we are in the office it can be organising rosters or planning for programs, researching agencies and putting young people in touch with external agencies that have contacted us,” he said. “A lot is going out and finding young people that might need help.” A majority of the day comprises of call-outs, whether it’s from residents, rangers, police or young people themselves. Their aim? To be the middle man. To listen to young people and develop a sense of understanding around what they might be going through. “A lot of the stuff is just engagement and talking to them, letting them have a voice to be heard. That’s what they’re after,” Mick said.

“They just want someone to talk to, to let out their problems.” Helping the youth is exactly what Mick loves “I wanted to do something different and use my skills in a better way... I’m studying psychology and counselling at the moment...it’s kind of my passion. I just wanted to get involved.” “There have been people who want to get themselves off drugs or get themselves out of a social group, find employment or studies. There are a lot of cases like that.
“The help is out there. There are a lot of people willing to help through schools, the youth centres, even the police. There are places out there to get help - they don’t have to feel alone.” Mick was also recently given an award by Mayor Tracey Roberts for his efforts in the Relay for Life. As well as talking and helping young people, there are many fun activities the City of Wanneroo youth workers organise. Wanneroo welcomes eSmart Libraries Pilot It was recently announced that City of Wanneroo libraries had been chosen to be part of the eSmart Libraries Pilot. Wanneroo is one of three libraries in Western Australia and 21 in Australia to be selected to be part of the pilot. eSmart Libraries is described as ‘one of the most significant community
cybersafety initiatives ever undertaken in Australia - is a behaviour change initiative for libraries to improve cybersafety and deal with cyberbullying and bullying’. Being part of the pilot will support the CyberSafe Network Initiative established in 2012.
Being part of the eSmart Libraries pilot gives our library service the opportunity to lead the way in cybersafety and will support the City playing an increasingly important role in bridging the digital divide by improving opportunities for the community to access the benefits of technology irrespective of income, ability or disadvantage.
The eSmart Libraries team will work closely with City library services throughout the pilot. The goal is to support the community on managing cyber-issues and empowering staff and library users with the skills for the smart, safe and responsible use of digital technologies.
Reconciliation Week Community Gathering The City will be hosting a Community Gathering at the Addison Park Club Rooms - Baltimore Parade, Merriwa on Wednesday 29 May from 3pm-5pm for all of the community to come together and celebrate Reconciliation Week. This gathering will be hosted by the City of Wanneroo with the support of a number of local schools, agencies and the West Perth Football Club. There will be a performance by local dance group Urban Youth Effect and a range of activities for children and young people, as well as players from the West Perth Football club. Adobe Photoshop Lightroom software provides a comprehensive set of digital photography tools, from powerfully simple one-click adjustments to cutting-edge advanced controls. Nick Melidonis will demonstrate these tools in this workshop.
Norma Schwind has produced three travel books on her photo trips to Asia and Russia. She will cover the choice of equipment and her journeys. Colin White will describe his experience photographing the Tour de France, as well as ‘The Fundamentals of Post Capture Processing’ using Photoshop elements.

V8 Supercars enroute to Wanneroo this May The V8 Supercars will return to Barbagallo Raceway from 3-5 May this year for the Perth 360. It will be a weekend not to be missed with car manufacturers Nissan and Mercedes-Benz due to battle it out alongside old time rivals Ford and Holden, taking the event to a whole new level. Developments to the raceway in 2012 mean fans can get up-close to their favourite teams and drivers through the in-field paddock area.
