FIRST FRIDAY DELAYED OPENING:
On the first Friday of each month the library will open at noon to allow for ongoing staff training and workshops.

Make it official by joining the Friends of Woodstock Public Library, a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting the library. Membership is free and open to everyone. Everyone is welcome to pitch in at planning meetings and fundraising events. Look for the Friends membership brochure or inquire at the library front desk to join.
NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK APRIL 6-12
Celebrate the essential role that our library and our library staff play in our community during National Library Week 2025. Learn about all the programs and services the library offers, share your support for the library on social media, tell your elected representatives to fund the important work of libraries, and stop by the library to thank library staff for all they do. Then help the Friends raise money for the library with our National Library Week raffle and Mini Links fundraiser.
USED BOOKSTORE
The Friends Used Bookstore is located on the main floor and lower level. Be sure to peruse the selection every time you visit the library – the inventory is regularly updated and features best-sellers, classics, and favorites for all ages. Music, movies, and audiobooks are also included. Bookstore proceeds benefit the community by providing library programs, services, materials, and much more.
USED BOOK DONATIONS ACCEPTED
The Friends of Woodstock Public Library accept donations of gently used books, CDs, and DVDs on the first Wednesday of the month during regular library hours. Limit of five boxes/bags per donation day. Used encyclopedias, textbooks, magazines, moldy/poor condition books, Reader’s Digest Condensed books, and VHS tapes are not accepted. Unsuitable paper items can be recycled in the library’s paper recycling bins in the public parking lot. Plastic/spiral bindings should be removed before placing in recycling bins. Please do not leave donations by the front door or in the outside book drops.

Play a round of mini golf in the library during Mini Links, the Friends biggest fundraiser of the year! For anyone who has ever wanted to putt their way through the nonfiction section or tap a ball into a (nonfunctioning) toilet in YA, Mini Links is a fun outing and a great way to support the library.

MADAM PRESIDENT: THE SECRET PRESIDENCY OF EDITH WILSON
After President Woodrow Wilson suffered a paralyzing stroke, his wife, First Lady Edith Wilson, began to handle the day-to-day responsibilities of the Executive Office. Mrs. Wilson had little formal education yet, in the uncertain peace following the end of WWI, Mrs. Wilson dedicated herself to managing the office of the President. Come listen to Author William Hazelgrove present research from his book, Madam President: The Secret Presidency of Edith Wilson

9to5: THE STORY OF A MOVEMENT
When Dolly Parton sang “9 to 5,” she was doing more than just shining a light on the fate of working women. Parton was singing the true story of a movement that started with 9to5, a group of Boston secretaries in the early 1970s. Their goals were simple—better pay, more advancement opportunities and an end to sexual harassment—but their unconventional approach attracted the press and shamed their bosses into change. Stop by the library for a screening of 9to5: The Story of a Movement or enjoy it from home by emailing the library for a Zoom recording of the film only available between March 21-23.

Faced with unimaginable odds, Nancy Wake aka “The White Mouse” and Marie-Madeleine Fourcade guided hundreds of French Resistance agents through the treacherous landscape of wartime France. Come to the library to hear Author Kit Sergeant discuss these brave women.

ABRAHAM LINCOLN & THE COMMON SOLDIER
Author Robert Girardi is stopping by the library to explore President Lincoln’s warm relationship with the US Army soldiers in his command. Girardi examines the mutual trust and respect that formed over the course of the war. Come learn how President Lincoln became known as “Father Abraham” by his troops.

GIANT PUZZLE CHALLENGE: AT THE WATERHOLE
DATES: JANUARY 6-APRIL
Once again, we are challenging patrons to put together an 18,000-piece puzzle. On January 6, the pieces for the first quarter of the puzzle will be set out and the fun begins. The puzzle along with dedicated sorting tables will be set up on the Library’s Upper Level. As each quarter is completed, the pieces from the next quarter will be set out. All participants are eligible for raffle tickets. The puzzle will be available during the library’s operating hours; be sure to stop by and see the progress and see if you can place a piece or two – or twenty.
Raffle Rules: Participants in the challenge are eligible for up to one ticket per day. Participants can only submit up to ten tickets over the course of the challenge; all additional tickets from an individual will be discarded. The raffle drawing will take place on Saturday, April 12th at the Library’s Mini Links fundraiser event.

PROPERTY TAX WORKSHOP
Learn about programs for tax relief, specific programs for Seniors, and property protection tools. Treasurer Donna Kurtz will discuss property tax exemptions available, convenient and safe ways to pay McHenry County property taxes, and ways to protect property deeds. This forum will give taxpayers tools to ensure that they receive all their eligible exemptions. Specific tax relief programs for Seniors will also be presented along with sign up forms and assistance. No registration required.

Stan Tekiela presents fun and fascinating facts and tidbits about some of the birds that people love to hate along with some of the common birds in our yard. From the benefits of composting, how to compost, equipment needed, troubleshooting, and using the compost that you make, they will touch upon it all. This support group allows spouses or life partners providing care to their companions to share their unique experiences with other spouses and life partners providing similar care. Meetings are facilitated by mental health professionals from Independence Health & Therapy.

SUNNY WITH A CHANCE OF POETRY
After a long cold winter, you’ll be ready for a little sunshine. How about some Sunny? Meet Sunny the miniature horse in front of the library and then move inside with artist and poet Diane Wlezien for a photo exhibition and poetry reading. Diane lives on a farm with her rescue animals and volunteers with Sunny at hospice, nursing homes, and with at-risk youth. She and friends will read poetry selections that celebrate animals and the many ways they bring joy to our lives. Copies of Diane’s book A Little Comfort: Healing Poems about Sunny the Miniature Horse will be available for purchase and signing.

City of Woodstock Residents and Rural Woodstock Public Library District Residents above the age of five qualify for a full-service Woodstock Library card at no cost. This card allows the cardholder to check out up to 50 items, borrow materials from other libraries, and full access to digital services. Children ages 5-14 years old must apply for the library card with their parent/guardian present. The parent/guardian will be required to present photo identification and proof of address.
APPLY FOR A LIBRARY CARD:

In Person Application: Request a library card application at the library Front Desk, you will be asked for photo identification and proof of current address (driver’s license, state I.D., personal checks, current utility bill, bank statement, apartment lease, etc.).
Email Application: Complete the PDF email library card application on the library’s website and email the completed application and a photograph of your ID/proof of address to library@woodstockil.gov. The application will be processed by staff and the library card will be mailed to your home address.
Mobile App: PrairieCat Mobile (Capira Technologies) is our catalog app that is available via Google Play or the Apple AppStore. To apply for a library card via the app select Woodstock as your ‘home’ library and click on My Account--Library Card Signup. The app will ask for your contact information. You will need to upload a photo of your photo i.d. and proof of address. The application will be processed by staff and the library card will be mailed to your home address.
Renewing Your Woodstock Library Card: to renew your library card you can stop at the front desk with valid identification with current address or you can email a photograph of your library card and valid identification to library@woodstockil.gov.

FIRST FRIDAY DELAYED OPENING:
On the first Friday of each month the library will open at noon to allow for ongoing staff training and workshops. Library hours on First Fridays: Noon-5 p.m.
