Getting with the times Olivier Felicio, Editor-in-Chief

Editor’s Letter

THE WORLD TODAY is nothing like what it used to be 20, or even 10 years ago. Gone are the days where people would watch television; why would they when they can use sites like YouTube and Netflix? Even the way people get their news has changed, using Twitter and Facebook as their main news sources. We’re living in the age of technology and social media, and it hasn’t just affected our personal lives, it has affected every person in every industry, including jewellers. You’re not just a jeweller anymore. You’re also a social media and digital strategy planner, a photographer, a product stylist, a PPC manager, and the list continues. Although doing these jobs will help your company succeed in reaching out to as many people as possible, it does take away from the fundamentals of being what you set out to be; a jeweller. Here’s where we come in. Canadian Jeweller Magazine has a digital marketing suite that can do all of that work for you, while you focus on what you do best. Without any hesitation, I will be more than happy to assist you with that. It’s important to remember not to shy away from social media, but to use it to your advantage. MIA, an up-and-coming business based in Quebec, has had the ability to sell their jewelry all across Europe, Asia and North America. With the help of their website and social media, MIA’s customers from around the globe are able to stay up-to-date with the high-quality jewelry that the company is offering. Speaking of high quality, in this issue, our rough cuts are featuring Pierre Laurent’s Swiss-made watches. There are plenty of styles and choices for both men and women, and are a great addition to any summer outfit you’ll wear this season. Whether you’re going for a night out on the town, or you’re spending the weekend relaxing with friends by the pool, they’ll add the air of luxury you’re looking for. Not all gems come from under the ground. The Gemological Institute of America supports communities where gems are mined, working with the Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory to build libraries in Africa and helping artisanal miners understand the quality of their discoveries with our Gem Guide. These initiatives help make it possible for regional populations to take a more active role in the industry and ultimately help their community look forward to a brighter future. There are many exciting features taking place at Canadian Jewellery Expos this year. The Toronto Expo will run from Thursday, Aug. 12 to Saturday, Aug. 14 at The International Centre Hall 5, and the Edmonton Expo runs from Wednesday, Aug. 18 to Friday, Aug. 20 at the Shaw Conference Centre. The expos will once again showcase leading manufacturers and wholesalers from across Canada and around the world. In addition to the newest styles and great price-points that are part of every expo, some in-show experiences that attendees have come to enjoy in the past will be brought back this year. The Opening Night Receptions, sponsored by Beverly Hills Jewellers, will be a great opportunity to enjoy a relaxed social environment at the end of the opening day in each city. Taking place in and around the Beverly Hills booth, attendees will be welcome to meet John Vaccaro and his team while enjoying complimentary drinks and appetizers. It will be the perfect complement to an exciting day of re-connecting with colleagues and industry friends. Canadian Jewellers Association (CJA) 100th Anniversary Networking Event - Enjoy this special social event sponsored by the CJA in celebration of their 100th anniversary. This will be an opportunity for CJA members and guests to meet and interact while enjoying drinks and light snacks. The event will take place on the second night of the expo at the CJA Pavilion on the floor as the show closes. For Toronto this will take place on Friday, Aug. 13, and for Edmonton, Thursday, Aug. 19. Canadian Jewellery Expos has also announced the return of the popular Lunch ‘n Learn series of seminars, which are sponsored by Jewellers Mutual Insurance. Seminars at noon and at 1 p.m. will be featured on days one and two in each city, on topics relevant to today’s jewelry retailer. Attendees will be able to enjoy a complimentary lunch and beverage while attending the seminar. The fifth annual Vaccaro Family Scholarship will feature designs produced by jewelry students from across Canada. All the entries will be displayed in Toronto and Edmonton, and attendees will have a chance to view the designs and vote for their favourite. The winning designer will receive $3,000, as well as exhibit space in future expos to help launch their career. The winner’s school also receives $1,000 towards their program. The 2017 Vaccaro Scholarship winner, Cassandra Vitiello of Nova Scotia College of Art and Design University, will be exhibiting her designs at the Toronto Expo this year. Attendees are encouraged to stop by her booth and see the work of this award-winning designer.

Creating a new standard You don’t need the most expensive jewelry to look fabulous; you just need MIA. by Catarina Muia

WHEN YOU THINK THE WORD ‘JEWELRY’, the words that follow may be ‘beautiful’, ‘elegance’, ‘gold’, and ‘expensive’. What many people might not realize though, is that you can get quality-made jewelry that conveys beauty and elegance, without the gold, and for a much less expensive price. For the past seven years, MIA, a Quebec-based company, has been providing beautiful, yet simple stainless steel jewelry for women. Kim Labrecque, the founder and GM of MIA, was born into a family of jewellers, his parents being Lucie Dulac and Marcel Labrecque, founders of Bizou International. “His love for the industry, it’s a concept that comes from his parents. However, MIA is his, and his parents believed in the project from the start,” says Melissa Roberts, the web marketing coordinator at MIA.

Roberts, who has been with the company since its conception in 2011, adds, “Having a small collection of stainless steel jewelry at Bizou, Kim’s parents were informed about the sales, and saw real potential for stainless steel jewelry. So when he brought this to them, they all agreed it was a good idea.” Although today MIA sells only stainless steel jewelry, it started out as a mix of sterling silver and stainless steel products until about two years ago. “The beginning was a lot of experimenting, however we realized that stainless steel was our strongest category, so we decided to shift and direct our focus,” says Roberts. “The women were loving it. Stainless steel jewelry is way more affordable, it doesn’t tarnish and wear down, and the colour doesn’t change. It’s something you can buy for $20, keep on wearing it as much as you want, and not have to worry about it loosing its brilliance over time.” Now, MIA offers everything from necklaces and bracelets to watches and rings in stainless steel, however their most popular items are the earrings.

Retailer Profile: MIA

“A lot of people get reactions to non-gold jewelry, so a lot of the time they either have to buy real gold earrings, which are super expensive, or not wear earrings at all,” Roberts explains. “Stainless steel is hypoallergenic though, which means it won’t cause a reaction, and you can buy a bunch of them because they’re so much cheaper than real gold earrings, because stainless steel isn’t rare like gold is.” For all of these reasons, stainless steel has definitely become a popular material for making women’s jewelry, however, it wasn’t the easiest to use for what Labrecque had in mind seven years ago. “Going back to 2011, stainless steel was more common for men because it had that rough, edgy look, which means it was harder to make it dainty,” Roberts explains. She recalls they worked really hard with their suppliers to try and get to Labrecque’s goal, which was making the jewelry more feminine. “Not only is the feminine look more suitable women, it is also just more comfortable, because then it’s not rough; it bends and flows.” Although the company has been around for seven years, it was only about a year ago that they were finally able to say that they reached the quality they had been looking for.

“His love for the industry, it’s a concept that comes from his parents. However, MIA is his, and his parents believed in the project from the start” The jewelry that they’re putting out now is a quality and look that keeps bringing customers back for more. “Our pieces are minimalistic and timeless; offering a classic look and also something modern at the same time. They’re classic with a modern twist, and that really works for us,” Roberts explains. And although Labrecque stays up-to-date with fashion influencers and big brands, “We’re not a fashion brand, so we’re not trying to take a look at fast-forward fashion, however our pieces, because they’re timeless, they can work with any trend that comes along.” In order to give back to the community that has shown MIA so much support already, the company has been partnered with

Leucan, a foundation in Quebec that helps children with cancer, for the last five years, and has raised more than $500,000 for the foundation. “We create a pair of earrings, and for every pair of that earring that are sold, we give $20 to the foundation. We really love this foundation; children are really important to us, so we want to give back to the community by helping children with cancer.” Although MIA is still fairly new, Roberts says they’re already working toward worldwide expansion, with a number of stores open in Quebec, as well as two open in Mauritius, South Africa. The company will also be opening four locations in Australia but the end of 2018. CJ

FOUNDED IN 1967 BY SALIM ARGALGI in Montreal, Que., Importex Co. has built a reputation not only for having the widest assortment and largest inventory of stones and findings in Canada, but for also being a one-stop shop for all jewelry needs. “In the beginning everything was concentrated around stones and findings,” said Morris Argalgi, director of operations at Importex Co., and son of Salim. “However, throughout the years we evolved and grew, and today we have a complete workshop and we can do anything,” And he isn’t exaggerating. Importex Co. is capable of doing anything a jeweller needs; in-house designing (providing ideas for custom orders), 3D renderings, sending renderings and ideas to clients, creating the jewelry, providing the finished product, repairs and appraisals. Importex Co. becomes a real part of the team, supporting the jeweller throughout the entire sale.

“Having a large inventory and having the ability to do everything onsite means that all of our projects get done quickly.”

“We do all of this onsite too, in order to be in full control of every piece of jewellery from A to Z, because we have jewellers, diamond setters (including micro pave) and a model maker, all on the premises,” said Fortune Argalgi, sales manager at Importex Co., and also the wife of David Argalgi, president of Importex Co.’s sister company, Gagi Import. Gagi Import specializes in findings such as the clasps, settings, solder, wire, etc. (in 10 karat, 14 karat, 18 karat, platinum and silver), for jewellers; whereas Importex Co. specializes in stones and diamonds. Whether it’s pearls, opals, coloured stones (genuine or synthetic), semi-precious stones and diamonds, you will find it at Importex Co. and Gagi Import.

Together, Importex Co. and Gagi Import are jewelry companies with the biggest inventory in Canada. “Having a large inventory and the ability to do everything onsite means that all of our projects get done quickly. The jewellers get exactly what they want, and for a great price. This is something I am really proud of,” Morris explained. Along with offering any stone or finding imaginable, Importex Co. also provides ideas. “Sometimes customers will go into a store, still unsure of what they want,” said Morris. “The store will call us up, let us know what type of jewelry is needed, and we will design five or six options, then send it for the customer to decide what they like best. From this, we are able to stay up-to-date with the latest jewelry trends. The services we offer make a huge difference to buyers. We love what we do; we want customers to be happy, and it shows in how we conduct business. We always try to give more”.CJ

True Thai Craftsmanship

Source and select the best gems and jewelry at the upcoming Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair in Bangkok, Thailand. THE BANGKOK GEMS AND JEWELRY FAIR (BGJF), organized by the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), has been celebrated as being one of the world’s leading gems and jewelry shows, and is regarded as Thailand’s longest established gems and jewelry fair. The BGJF, which will have its second fair of the year from Friday, Sept. 2, to Tuesday, Sept. 11, demonstrates the whole spectrum of products and services the industry has to offer. It also shines a light on innovative designs and the latest global trends from well-established brands, to new entries. “The 61st Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair [this past February] was a success in showcasing the strength of Thailand’s gems and jewelry industry to the world,” said Chantira Jimreivat Vivatrat, DITP’s general director. “The DITP is certain that at the upcoming 62nd Bangkok Gems and Jewelry Fair this September, we will see a larger number of exhibitors and visitors enjoying the wide range of gems and jewelry products offered.” Vivatrat added that the success of the 61st BGJF was a step towards the industry achieving the Thai government’s aim of making Thailand the world’s gems and jewelry production trading hub. “In February, 853 exhibitors participated at the fair, occupying 2,003 booths. Although 747 of these were from Thailand, others

came from around the globe, including countries as diverse as Hong Kong, Poland, Turkey, Japan, Singapore, India, South Korea, Israel, Indonesia and Canada,” Vivatrat explained. “A total of US$63 million in trade value was generated both at the show and in advance purchases.” The Thai gems and jewelry industry has experienced continued growth for many years, with its strength in Thai artisans who are known for their skills in heat treatment, as well as crafting intricate designs, and having outstanding jewelry settings. Furthermore, Thailand is known as one of the world’s largest coloured gemstones trading hubs, while Thai exporters understand the demands of international markets. “We come here for the gemstones – Thailand is still a great source for colour gemstones – and to meet with our international clients from Australia,” Anita Agrawal the CEO of Toronto-based jewelry manufacturing company, Best Bargains. “BCJF is very accessible and not as costly as other shows. It’s amazing to see intricate designs from the jewelry collections here.” In order to highlight Thailand’s cultural heritage in jewelry crafting, Vivatrat explained that the 62nd BGJF “will promote the exquisite craftsmanship of Thai artisans who produce a variety of jewelry in both classic and modern styles, which is capturing consumers all over the world.” CJ

Tech Feature: Smallz

Don’t fret the

smallz things Father-son duo creates a faster way to get what you need

BEING A JEWELLER, it’s extremely important to have access to quick and easy service when it comes to acquiring diamonds. Smallz is a one-of-a-kind revolutionary app for ordering loose, small diamonds or diamond melee directly from your smartphone. The app allows users to browse prices in a variety of qualities and to select specific millimetre sizes or carat weights. You can order large amounts for ongoing use or just a couple of stones for a specific piece. You have complete flexibility. Smallz has been launched by father and son duo, Mark and Adam of Lomar International. Mark has been in the wholesale diamond and jewelry business for almost 40 years. Adam joined five years ago and brings with him a GIA graduate degree in diamonds. The pair has an extensive network of supply across the world and they’ve been brainstorming some new innovative ideas for the jewelry industry in Canada. Knowing they had access to great quality diamond melee at amazing prices, they wanted to figure out how to elevate something so small and so simple, since it’s always a requirement across the industry. That’s when the idea hit them that they should take advantage of the ‘at-your-fingertips connectivity’ that smartphones provide – on-demand, higher convenience and making your life easier. From there the goal was to develop an app that offered customers the best pricing, and more importantly, was extremely

70 CJ Smallz.indd 70

simple and easy to use. “We wanted a solution where the customer can order the exact quality, size, and quantity they want, from their phone in less than one minute,” says Adam. And it looks like the goal has been achieved. Once ordered, the stones are delivered to your store the next business day, anywhere in Canada. “These guys have got it figured out. It’s easy and the stones have been consistent throughout my orders,” says Saro, a customer from Van Der Jewelers. The key to it all is consistent quality of merchandise. Everything is checked and gauged in Toronto, Ont. before being sent out. With the goal of keeping everything simple and easy, the app has been launched with two qualities, and inventory in every size from 0.9mm up to 20 points. The duo believes that anyone who tries it will love the service. It’s quick and extremely convenient so that jewellers can focus their time on their clients and pieces, and not worry about “the smallz”. CJ

GOLD vs

CRYPTOCURRENCIES by Moniruz Zaman

THE HEADLINE ‘Gold versus cryptocurrencies’ seems a bit like an anomaly. Strictly speaking, apples are not being compared to apples. This is about the generic category of fruits that can exist in an investor’s basket. Gold has been a safe haven for wealth for thousands of years, in contrast, cryptocurrencies can’t boast of such a broad spectrum. Sure the abacus was used for centuries, however winds of change, especially the type seen since the digital revolution, has pushed people to take a serious look at trends emerging today. Bitcoin, the oldest known cryptocurrency, is not even a decade old; it hit the horizon in 2009. Like the Gold Rush, a sort of ‘crypto rush’ ensued with the result that today, more than 1,800 cryptocurrencies exist. Although most are weak with diminishing, the subject still evokes a strong curiosity. Present generations are known to adopt the latest innovations at speeds like never before. However the rate of failure of ideas and initiatives that appeared brilliant at first sight, is also unprecedented.

72

CANADIANJEWELLER.COM

CJ Gold Feature.indd 72

To be fair to cryptocurrencies, it’s important to understand the evolution and meaning of the concept, which still remains quite vague. A person who assumed the name of Santoshi Nakamoto first published a paper called Bitcoin: A Peer to Peer Electronic Cash System, in 2008, and almost simultaneously, a website – bitcoin.org, was launched. However, Santoshi’s involvement with this venture was surprisingly short lived, and he weaned himself away from this project by mid 2010. The architecture of this first digital currency was completely digital or virtual, and is also referred to as an alternative currency. To this day, Bitcoin relies heavily on what is called blockchain, an electronic database that records and tracks all assets, whether tangible or intangible, as well as transaction data, continuously. In this sense it is a low cost ledger. By enabling digital transactions remotely, it makes a variety of transaction types across many asset classes possible and also eliminates the need for face-toface interactions between a buyer and seller. Any system, for

CANADIAN SHOW ISSUE 2018

2018-06-29 4:42 PM

high value exchange of money, has to ensure the highest level of confidentiality and security. Blockchain uses cryptography for this, and the name is derived from the more commonly understood term - encryption. Cryptocurrencies have had an extremely checkered history. In December 2009, Bitcoin was trading at an all time high of $20,000. The very next month, the currency lost 30 per cent of its value suddenly, which amounted to $44.2 billion. This was close on the heels of an earlier meltdown in September 2017, when China outlawed cryptocurrencies. A large portion of the online drug trade is also conducted in cryptocurrencies. Though, what might be the biggest negative about cryptocurrencies is the fact that they are not backed up by any form of physical wealth, such as precious metals or oil. With the mode being totally unregulated and decentralized, there is no government to back it or step in to arrest any major collapses in their value. Wikipedia labels cryptocurrencies as ‘controversial’. They certainly don’t have a mainstream status yet. There are several reasons for why even the most forward-looking economies prefer to keep cryptocurrencies at arms’ length. Their inability to hold any organization accountable, indirectly encouraging tax evasion, unaccounted income, excessive speculation, and the lack of a foolproof system to prevent hacking, are some of their very pertinent reservations. In marked contrast to virtual currencies, gold, as a vehicle for investment, has had a far more stable run, and that’s without massive upheavals and catastrophic collapses. Goldprice.org plotted the journey of gold from US$950 per ounce, to US$1,290 until mid May this year. In overall terms there is an uptrend in the last 10 years. In terms of growth, gold has experienced a 314.19 per cent increase in the past 16 years. This growth has been steady by and large, though it has sustained over the longer term, a big boon for medium- and long-term investors. In 2017, though the Federal Reserve System boosted interest rates three times, gold picked up 13.5 per cent value, which is an unmatched yearly gain since 2010. The World Gold Council is upbeat for this year too, and expects demand to be sustained and even accelerated due to overall global growth and the palpable shift from the USD to gold for investment. Mining.com has quoted the London Bullion Market Association, the globally recognized premier gold body, on the prospect for gold this year, based on a poll of 34 leading gold analysts. “Opinions differ as to the level of the U.S. real interest rates, the likely impact of geopolitical factors, and the pace of global economic growth. Our contributors are divided as to

what will have the greater impact and hence we have received forecasts for gold as high as $1,510 and as low as $1,120 and it’s a similar story for the other metals.” The perspective of TD Securities forecasts a high for gold of $1,433, a dip to just below $1,200 and an average of $1,313. World gold production peaked at 3,150 metric tons in 2017. This represents a 2 per cent increment in the total global gold held above the ground. There is a strong possibility of decline in output because of lower capital amount. As per Bullion Vault, gold exploration budgets have declined year on year since reaching a high of US$9,500 million in 2012, to just US$4,000 million in 2017. Lower output further enhances the prospect of stronger gold prices. As always, for the future, investors will be driven by their sentiment towards the yellow metal, motivational profiles, time perspectives and risk-taking ability. In short, individual investors have to take their own pick between gold and cryptocurrencies. The cardinal principles of, “No risk, no reward,” as well as, “Slow and steady wins the race,” will both hold true. CJ

Updates and upgrades:

Friend or foe?

Although updates and upgrades can come at a small expense, it’s important to keep your software running smoothly

Tech Column

by Mike Lawlor

I’VE HEARD from a lot of designers and manufacturers as of late, discussing the topic of updating and upgrading software and hardware alike. Usually when I hear about it, it’s accompanied by outcries of expense, and grumpiness about the pace of technology’s ever-expanding upgrades and capabilities. Now, let’s take a moment to stand back and consider something. All of us – I mean everyone who has invested in anything from computer-aided design (CAD) software, to 3D printers, and even laser welders – at one point was looking forward at these pieces of tech, and thinking about the many ways it could expand our capabilities. It could make our day-to-day lives easier, and possibly even grow our businesses. So where are those thoughts when it comes to upgrades? Lets take a deeper dive into it. When I first invested in CAD software, I started with Matrix version 7.5. Since 2014 we have seen two new upgrades to the software: version 8 and version 9. Yes, each one of these updates came with an expense, however each one has also come with new capabilities, new tools, and new possibilities. Although in some cases that does mean that old tools are phased out in favour of new ones, what are we doing if we aren’t continuing to learn every day as we work? As we discuss 3D printers we can look at the expansion of new models, as well as technology advancements in the fields throughout the past four years; and they’ve been massive. In many ways some of the printers today are extremely similar, despite the fine-tuning that has been done to them. This includes builtin computer screens, the speed in which they can manufacturer models, and even the decreased price point being seen in some

74

CANADIANJEWELLER.COM

CJ TechColumn.indd 74

brands and models. These are only a few of the changes we have seen occur in a very short matter of time, and it holds promise that there will be further growth in the next 5 to 10 years. I agree that these added expenses of upgrades and updates to software may sometimes seem unnecessary, however you have to remind yourself to look forward to the future of your business, just like you did when you were originally investing in this technology. Remember how these upgrades and investments have revolutionized your business and helped you adapt to the current demand of consumers everywhere. When you look back on the previous years of owning this tech and equipment, remember the success it has brought you. The simplest and easiest way I have found to accomplish upgrades, is plan it out. Create a budget and stick to putting that money away. It’s not likely you’re going to have to invest in updates or upgrades every year, and having this type of development throughout the years makes the ability to pull the trigger on a new upgrade that much easier. It will also keep you constantly aware of new changes on the tech side of the industry, and will allow you to weigh the pros and cons of what pieces are worth to you and your business, before you find yourself feeling like you need to make the purchase. After evaluating all aspects of an upgrade or update, remember you know your business better than any sales representative or any tech guru. If you’re finding success with a piece of equipment or particular software, keep it up-to-date. You will know if the investment is worth what it brings in, and it’s almost always a no-brainer. CJ
