La production reste traditionnelle afin de proposer, comme à l'origine, des produits d'excellence. Le papier Beaux-Arts est le support de l'œuvre et l'artiste doit se sentir en confiance tout autant que pour le choix de ses pigments. Les papiers Beaux-Arts Clairefontaine et l'éclat des couleurs extra-fines de Blockx constituent donc le parfait alliage.

The family business BLOCKX joined the company Clairefontaine Rhodia in 2022 to paint a new page in its story on high-quality paper, together. Production remains traditional in order to offer the same excellent products that have been made since the very beginning. The Fine Arts paper is the medium for an artwork, and the artist must be able to rely on it, and on their choice of pigments. Clairefontaine Fine Arts papers and the brilliance of Blockx ultra-fine colours therefore make for the perfect marriage.

Das Familienunternehmen BLOCKX hat sich 2022 dem Unternehmen Clairefontaine Rhodia angeschlossen, um gemeinsam eine neue Seite seiner Geschichte auf hochwertigem Papier zu malen. Fondée en 1865 en Belgique par Jacques Blockx I, la marque BLOCKX est aujourd’hui reconnue par les artistes du monde entier pour la qualité de ses couleurs à l’huile. A l’époque, les amis artistes belges du fondateur se désespéraient de ne plus trouver les belles couleurs traditionnelles fabriquées dans les ateliers d’artistes, remplacées par des méthodes industrielles.

Jacques Blockx I, chimiste passionné par les teintes et les pigments, décida alors de les élaborer pour eux, au sein d’un petit laboratoire situé dans sa propriété. « Trouver une formule qui donnera aux couleurs à l’huile les qualités nécessaires de solidité, d’éclat et de beauté, tel est le but que je me suis efforcé d’atteindre » J.B

Founded in 1865 in Belgium by Jacques Blockx I, today the brand BLOCKX is recognised by artists from around the world for the quality of its oil-based colours. At the time, the founder’s Belgian artist friends were despairing at the scarcity of the beautiful traditional colours made in artists’ studios, which had been replaced by industrial methods.

Jacques Blockx I, a chemist passionate about colours and pigments, therefore decided to make some for them, at a small laboratory located on his property. «The goal I have strived to achieve is finding a formula that will give the oil-based colours the required qualities of resistance, brilliance and beauty.» J.B

Die Marke BLOCKX wurde 1865 von Jacques Blockx I in Belgien gegründet und ist heute bei Künstlern auf der ganzen Welt für die Qualität ihrer Ölfarben bekannt. Damals verzweifelten die belgischen Künstlerfreunde des Gründers daran, dass sie die schönen traditionellen Farben, die in den Künstlerateliers hergestellt wurden, nicht mehr finden konnten, da sie durch industrielle Methoden ersetzt worden waren.

Jacques Blockx I, ein leidenschaftlicher Chemiker, der sich für Farbtöne und Pigmente begeisterte, beschloss, diese für sie in einem kleinen Labor auf seinem Anwesen zu entwickeln. «Eine Formel zu finden, die den Ölfarben die notwendigen Eigenschaften wie Festigkeit, Glanz und Schönheit verleiht, ist das Ziel, das ich zu erreichen versucht habe» J.B

L’intégralité des gammes BLOCKX repose sur des couleurs mono-pigmentaires, ayant une formulation sans charges et/ou sans additifs. Les huiles, les aquarelles ainsi que les pastels, sont hautement concentrés en couleur et détiennent une charge pigmentaire élevée. Les couleurs ont une solidité minimum de 7 dans l'échelle des laines bleues qui en compte 8. Elles peuvent donc toutes être considérées comme parfaitement solides à la lumière et particulièrement vives, lumineuses et intenses. Tous les produits sont fabriqués en Belgique dans la pure tradition, afin de garantir une palette de couleurs aux nuances éclatantes et qualitatives. Aucune étape de la fabrication n'est laissée au hasard et le contrôle est rigoureux. L'artiste, débutant ou professionnel, peut alors travailler en confiance puisque, quelle que soit la couleur utilisée chez BLOCKX, elle aura une stabilité et une solidité maximum à la lumière, ce qui assure la pérennité des œuvres et du talent des artistes dans le temps.

Every BLOCKX range is based on single-pigment colours, its formulation free from bulking agents and/or additives. The oils, watercolours and pastels are highly concentrated in colour and boast a high pigment content. The colours have a minimum fastness of 7 out of 8 on the Blue Wool Scale, meaning they can all be considered perfectly resistant to light and particulatly vibrant, luminous and intense. All the products are made in Belgium according to pure tradition, to guarantee a palette of colours with dazzling, high-quality brilliance. No production stage is left to chance and control is rigourous. All artists, be they amateur or professional, can therefore work with confidence, because regardless of the BLOCKX colour they use, it will have maximum stability and resistance to light, ensuring the longevity of artists' work and talent over time.

Die Ölfarben, Aquarellfarben und Pastellfarben sind hochkonzentriert und besitzen eine hohe Pigmentladung. Die Farben haben eine Farbechtheit von mindestens 7 in der Blauwollskala, die aus 8 besteht. Dans la tradition BLOCKX, les couleurs sont fabriquées avec des pigments hautement concentrés et finement sélectionnés, dans le monde entier. Tous les pigments sont utilisés purs, sans ajout de charge de quelque nature que ce soit, pour une saturation maximum. Encore aujourd’hui, le mélange et le broyage lent sur cylindre en pierre de porphyre est fait de la manière la plus respectueuse possible de la couleur et le plus proche du broyage à la main pour un rendu hautement qualitatif et une finesse de pigment optimale. Cette méthode de production traditionnelle permet d’éviter l'échauffement de la matière, et ainsi garantir une finesse, une onctuosité et une pureté de la couleur. Les pigments de BLOCKX sont plébiscités par les plus grands artistes dont : Salvador Dali, Edward Hopper, Camille Pissarro ou encore René Magritte.

In the BLOCKX tradition, the colours are made with highly concentrated and meticulously selected pigments from around the world. All the pigments are used pure, with no bulking agents added whatsoever, for maximum saturation. Still today, the slow mixing and grinding using a cylindrical porphyry grinding stone is performed with the utmost care for the colour itself, and is as close to hand-grinding as possible for an extremely high-quality result and optimal finesse of the pigment. This traditional production method prevents the colours from overheating, thereby ensuring they remain fine, smooth and pure.

The BLOCKX pigments have received acclaim from the greatest artists, including Salvador Dalí, Edward Hopper, Camille Pissarro and René Magritte.

Diese traditionelle Herstellungsmethode verhindert die Erhitzung des Materials und garantiert so eine feine, cremige und reine Farbe. Aujourd’hui, avec ses 86 couleurs à l’huile extra-fine, la palette de références de la Maison Blockx s’enrichit de 19 nouvelles nuances originales. Ses teintes, toujours aussi onctueuses et lumineuses, offrent une pâte aux qualités remarquables, parfaitement adaptée aux techniques picturales tant classiques que contemporaines. Comme hier, dans le respect du métier et sous le regard de Jacques Blockx IV, la même rigueur est appliquée à la fabrication des huiles. Les huiles extra-fines sont, pour la plus grande partie, réalisées à partir de mono pigment, sans charges et/ou sans additifs pour un produit hautement concentré en couleur. Broyées à l’huile de lin, elles sont très structurées mais se mélangent beaucoup plus facilement et se travaillent plus longtemps si elles sont broyées à l’huile d’œillette. Leur rendu est incomparable, permettant tous les mélanges directement sur la toile avec la plus grande facilité. Les pigments de couleur sont éclatants.

Today, with its 86 extra-fine oil-based colours, the product palette from Blockx has been augmented with 19 new and original shades. As smooth and luminous as ever, its colours offer a texture with remarkable qualities, perfectly wellsuited to classical and contemporary pictorial techniques. The same traditional, exacting standards are applied to making oils as they always have been, with respect for the trade and under the watchful eye of Jacques Blockx IV. The extra-fine oils are mostly made from single pigment, and are free from bulking agents and/or additives, for a product with a high colour concentration. Ground with linseed oil, they are highly structured, while being easier to mix and to work for longer than if they were ground with poppyseed oil. They offer an incomparable result, allowing for all kinds of mixing directly on the canvas with the greatest of ease. The colour pigments are truly dazzling.

Die Palette der Referenzen des Hauses Blockx mit seinen 86 extrafeinen Ölfarben wird nun um 19 neue, originelle Nuancen erweitert. Die stets geschmeidigen und leuchtenden Farbtöne bieten eine Paste mit hervorragenden Eigenschaften, die sowohl für klassische als auch für zeitgenössische Maltechniken bestens geeignet ist. Nach wie vor wird bei der Herstellung der Öle dieselbe Strenge angewandt, um das Handwerk zu wahren und unter den Augen von Jacques Blockx IV. Die extrafeinen Öle werden zum größten Teil aus Monopigmenten hergestellt, ohne Füllstoffe und/oder Zusatzstoffe für ein hochkonzentriertes Farbprodukt. Wenn sie mit Leinöl gemahlen werden, sind sie sehr strukturiert, lassen sich aber viel leichter mischen und länger verarbeiten, wenn sie mit Nelkenöl gemahlen werden. Ihre Wiedergabe ist unvergleichlich und ermöglicht alle Mischungen direkt auf der Leinwand mit großer Leichtigkeit. Die Farbpigmente sind leuchtend.

L’aquarelle BLOCKX est faite de pigments rares, résistants à la lumière, très finement broyés, enrobés de gomme arabique et de miel. A la recherche de l’excellence, Jacques Blockx a élaboré ses 72 nuances d’aquarelle en y incorporant du miel pour renforcer la résistance dans le temps des couleurs, et leur donner davantage d’éclat et de luminosité. Une fabrication à l’origine belge et artisanale.

L’aquarelle Blockx est fabriquée sur les même bases depuis les origines, avec les meilleurs pigments du marché et de la gomme arabique de qualité supérieure comme liant. Ce mélange de composants nobles permet d’obtenir des couleurs à la texture onctueuse, brillantes, et donne des nuances vives et lumineuses. La gomme arabique et le miel procurent une qualité d’application incomparable et permettent la réalisation de superbes lavis.

BLOCKX watercolour is made from rare, light-resistant pigments that are very finely ground and coated in gum arabic and honey. Additif:

Substances incorporées à faible doses améliorent certaines qualités déjà existantes dans la peinture. Ces matières spécifiques peuvent s’ajouter aux constituants principaux de la peinture. Elles renforcent ainsi les performances des liants, des pigments ou des solvants.

Charge:

Matière solide d’origine minérale qui rentre dans la composition d’une peinture, elle permet de rendre les peintures solides mais aussi de les rendre esthétiques par différents effets de matière. Les charges sont ajoutées à la peinture pour lui donner certaines qualités et modifier son aspect final. La charge permet également d’améliorer la résistance et l’accroche de la peinture.

La charge peut être minérale naturelle ou végétale naturelle.

Couleur granuleuse :

La granulation est une propriété de certains pigments, qui consiste dans le fait que le pigment de la peinture, une fois celle-ci appliquée, se regroupe en petites grappes. Il en résulte une texture granuleuse ou mouchetée qui produit un effet très vivant.

Couleur mono-pigmentaire:

Est une couleur où un seul pigment intervient lors de sa fabrication. Peindre essentiellement avec une gamme de couleurs mono-pigmentaires permet d’obtenir des mélanges lumineux et éclatants

Couleur teintante:

Désigne une couleur qui teintera le papier et sur laquelle il sera difficile de revenir. Une couleur peu teintante peut donc être « enlevée » du papier avec de l’eau. Une couleur teintante pénètrera elle le papier directement.

Echelle des laines bleues:

Echelle des bleus est une échelle de couleurs destinée à évaluer la solidité à la lumière d’un colorant. Chacune des huit plages de l’échelle est teinte en bleu avec un colorant différent. Le numéro de plage suit l’ordre de solidité. On expose le produit à évaluer en même temps que l’échelle, et on compare visuellement leurs décolorations. La solidité lumière des produits BLOCKX est supérieure à 7 dans l’échelle des laines bleues (maximum 8). Ils ont donc une résistance à la lumière optimale.

Extra-fine:

La peinture extra-fine est fabriquée avec le broyage le plus fin et elle se distingue par un taux de pigment pur plus important.

Gomme arabique:

Produit qui provient de l’acacia, elle est obtenue par un épanchement de la sève provenant du tronc, de façon naturelle ou que l’on provoque par une incision. En peinture artistique, la gomme arabique est l’un des principaux composants des peintures aquarelles. C’est ce que l’on appelle le liant.

Liant:

Un liant sert à agglomérer le ou les pigments, permet de faire tenir le pigment sur le support et protège le pigment dans le temps.

Pigment:

Substance chimique colorante, généralement en poudre fine, insoluble dans le milieu qu’elle colore.

Siccatif:

Se dit d’une matière (huiles de lin, de bois de Chine) qui, appliquée en couche mince, est apte à se polymériser sous l’action de l’air et, éventuellement, de la lumière.

Additive:

Substances incorporated at low doses that improve certain existing qualities in the paint. These specific materials can be added to the paint’s main components. They improve the performance of binders, pigments or solvents.

Bulking agent:

A solid, mineral-based material that is included in the composition of a paint, which helps make paints resistant as well as aesthetic, through different textural effects. Bulking agents are added to paint to give it certain qualities and alter their final appearance. Bulking agents can also improve the resistance and hold of the paint.

Bulking agents can be natural mineral-based or natural plant-based.

Granulating colour:

Granulation is a property of certain pigments, whereby the paint pigment, once applied, forms small clusters. The result is a granular or mottled texture that creates a very vibrant effect.

Single-pigment colour:

Single-pigment colour is a colour made with just one pigment. Painting mainly with a range of single-pigment colours allows luminous and brilliant mixes to be created.

Staining colour:

Refers to a colour that will stain the paper and which is difficult to “undo”. A low-staining colour can therefore be “removed” from the paper with water. A staining colour, however, will directly penetrate the paper.

Blue Wool Scale:

The Blue Wool Scale is a colour scale used to assess the light fastness of a dye. Each of the 8 ratings on the scale is dyed blue with a different dye. The rating numbers run in order of fastness. The assessed product is exposed at the same time as the scale, and the discolourations are visually compared. The light fastness of BLOCKX products is greater than 7 on the Blue Wool Scale (maximum 8). They therefore offer optimal light fastness.

Extra-fine:

Extra-fine paint is made with the finest grind and stands out for its higher content of pure pigment.

Gum arabic:

A product derived from acacia, it is obtained through the effusion of sap from the trunk, either naturally or induced by incision. In artistic painting, gum arabic is one of the main components of watercolour paints. This is what is known as the binder.

Binder:

A binder is used to aggregate the pigment or pigments, helps improve the hold of the pigment on the medium and protects the pigment over time.

Pigment:

A chemical colourant, generally in fine powder form, insoluble in the medium it is colouring.

Siccative:

The term used for a substance (linseed or tung oil) which, when applied in a thin layer, is able to polymerise under the effect of air and, ultimately, light.

Bezeichnet eine Farbe, die das Papier färbt und die man nur mit Mühe wieder rückgängig machen kann. Eine schwach färbende Farbe kann daher mit Wasser aus dem Papier „herausgewaschen“ werden. Eine färbende Farbe dringt direkt in das Papier ein.

Blaue-Wolle-Skala:

Blauskala ist eine Farbskala, mit der die Lichtechtheit eines Farbstoffs beurteilt werden soll. Jeder der acht Bereiche der Skala wird mit einem anderen Farbstoff blau gefärbt. Die Nummer des Bereichs folgt der Reihenfolge der Farbechtheit. Das zu bewertende Produkt wird zusammen mit der Skala ausgelegt, und die Verfärbungen werden visuell verglichen. Die Lichtechtheit der BLOCKX-Produkte ist höher als 7 auf der Blaue-Wolle-Skala (maximal 8). Sie besitzen somit eine optimale Lichtechtheit.

Extrafein:

Extrafeine Farbe wird mit feinster Mahlung hergestellt und zeichnet sich durch einen höheren Anteil an reinen Pigmenten aus.

Gummiarabikum:

Ein Produkt, das aus der Akazie gewonnen wird. Es entsteht durch den natürlichen oder durch einen Einschnitt verursachten Austritt von Saft aus dem Stamm. In der Kunstmalerei ist Gummiarabikum einer der Hauptbestandteile von Aquarellfarben. Es wird als Bindemittel bezeichnet.

Bindemittel:

Ein Bindemittel dient dazu, das oder die Pigmente zu agglomerieren, sorgt dafür, dass das Pigment auf dem Trägermaterial hält und schützt das Pigment langfristig.

Pigment:

Chemische Farbsubstanz, meist in Form eines feinen Pulvers, das in dem Medium, das es färbt, unlöslich ist.

Sikkativ:

Bezeichnet ein Material (Leinöl, chinesisches Holzöl), das, in einer dünnen Schicht aufgetragen, unter der Einwirkung von Luft und eventuell Licht polymerisiert werden kann.
