CCDI COMMUNITY BUILDER
ISSUE 10: 2022-2023
FOUNDED 2015
FOUNDED 2015
CCDI stands for Construction Career Development Initiative. CCDI is a 501(c)(3) non-for-profit which was founded by Clayco in 2015 in response to the aftermath in Ferguson, Missouri to provide a program for selected young adults in North County to help them overcome barriers to success, pair them in mentorships, offer financial support and create opportunities for job placement in the construction industry. Clayco’s vision with CCDI is to support workforce diversity and bridge the gap in workforce development and create scholarship opportunities. Now, CCDI has grown Beyond the Walls of Clayco to include many partnerships in the St. Louis community with school districts, workforce development programs, general contractors and subcontractors. Our goal is to connect the vast ecosystem of industry and educational resources and to promote collectively working together in #BuildingTheFoundationForChange for our next generation of leaders in the construction industry.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE #1 –
We go beyond the classroom. We get jobseekers into real-world work environments for the most valuable career training.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE #3
With CCDI, training and mentorship are just the beginning. We provide the support and directino jobseekers need to successfully find work.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE #2 –
Jobs in construction span a diverse range of disciplines and applications. We work to raise awareness of the various trade apprentice programs.
GUIDING PRINCIPLE #4 –
Our mentorship emphasizes academic goals. We encourage jobseekers to pursue two- or four-year degrees, focusing on tuition assistance.
brings diversity to the Design and Construction industry by mentoring and exposing minority/underrepresented and under employed men and women to career development in construction.
One of our many goals within CCDI is to cultivate renewed interest in career technical education (CTE) and trade apprenticeship programs. Nationwide the construction industry is thriving, but as Baby Boomers continue to retire, the gap in finding qualified and diverse skilled workers to hire continues to increase. There has never been a more important time for the construction industry to make diversity and inclusion a priority. When you have people who come from different backgrounds, they bring unique experiences that cultivate innovation and creativity. CCDI is building that pipeline by exposing and educating youth to careers in construction while addressing and breaking down the barriers that exist in creating a more diverse, robust and sustainable skilled workforce. CCDI has a strong network of partnerships with multiple school districts and workforce development programs to enhance the classroom experience for students by facilitating field trips, coordinating job shadowing and internships, attending career fairs, arranging guest speakers and hosting annual hiring fairs for program graduates.

Our mission came full circle this year as CCDI celebrated our first class of Build Our Future scholarship recipients who all graduated from college and secured full-time employment in their respective career pathways! Special thanks to each of their mentors who have been a part of their journey since high school. We are thrilled to recognize this very important milestone in our program and wish each of our newest college graduates the best of luck as they start the next chapter of their lives.
In June, CCDI hosted our Annual Senior Signing Day at North Technical High School to celebrate the Class of 2023 and the graduating seniors who have signed on to work for local companies in the construction trades! CCDI awarded tool scholarships to help the graduates get started in each of their respective trades, as well as lunch coolers, water jugs and PPE! CCDI Alumni from 2015 to 2022 returned for this special occasion to give the newest apprentices a few words of advice on how to be successful in the trades. We also had the opportunity to recognize a tremendous achievement for 5 of our Alumni who all journeyed out of their apprenticeship programs this year and taken on even bigger roles in each of their companies! Thank you to all the parents, teachers, company sponsors, mentors and program partners that came out to applaud the accomplishments of this awesome group of students. Special thanks to all our donors who have made this program possible year after year and who continue to hire, retain, and mentor our students!
Congratulations goes out to five of our alumni in the trades who all completed their union apprenticeship training programs this year and earned journey-level status in their respective trades. Special thanks to the contractors and subcontractors who have helped to keep our students employed and retained in the industry to be able to accomplish this important career milestone. Our alumni are a testament of the impact that CCDI has in our community and we are so happy to see them give back to the program by mentoring new students interested in the trades!

D’Von Johnson, 2019 Alum and McCluer Grad has been active in CCDI for the past 5 years. D’Von interned with Clayco as a quality control manager after high school. He decided to pursue a career in the painting trades and with the help of CCDI, started working as an apprentice painter for PM Leach. D’Von also wanted to further his education and became an Apprentice Scholar where he worked full day while taking business classes at the community college in the evenings. D’Von noticed there was a need for minority commercial painters in the industry and decided to start his first business venture running his own company, D. Johnson Painting.
De’Hon Mull, 2019 BOF Scholar and Jennings Grad joined CCDI in 2018 when he was a high school junior. He attended all our Saturday Academies and was matched with Mr. Tommy Davis, President of TD4 Electrical, as his mentor who assisted De’Hon with buying his first car. De’Hon began studying business at STLCC after high school, but opted to change directions and went into auto mechanics for several years. CCDI reconnected with De’Hon when he was hired on full-time at Concrete Strategies in June to pursue a career as a cement mason with Local 527! CCDI awarded De’Hon a tool scholarship to get him started.

Every Spring, CCDI plans a service project for our students to participate in as a way to engage and give back to the communities we help serve. This year, our project landed on Earth Day… and what better way to celebrate than by planting trees! CCDI students, alumni and volunteers teamed up to plant trees and shrubs at Delmar DivINe that were donated by Clayco! Many of our students had the opportunity to tour this awesome project as it was being renovated and several of our program alumni were tradesmen and women who actually worked on this building. We are happy to see all the life and love this project embodies; Maxine Clark is a true visionary! Thank you to Matt Drobak of Clayco and Neil Eisenberger of LJC for leading the efforts to make this service project possible.

A very big thank you to our keynote speaker, Dr. Joylynn Pruitt Adams, Superintendent of Riverview Gardens School District for speaking to our guests and to all of our partners and friends that came out to celebrate the mission and success stories of CCDI.
